Does it use your minutes when someone leaves you a message ?
If you call in the to check it, that call will. If you retrieve it via email or the app, then no.

What about if you have your phone set to forward missed calls to your google voice - voice mail? Does the forward take away from your minutes?

The question was if someone leaves you a 2 minutes message will it count as minutes used.
Just the leaving the message ...
Put your Google Voice number in the AT&T A-List. I haven't used a single minute in over 9 months. Leaves the minutes for the rest of the family. I have a 5 user plan and we have no worries about minutes because of Google Voice. My wife did the same thing and she hasn't used a minute now in 2 months. The kids get to burn through 1400 minutes
I can't add the a-list feature...

Please don't quote this but I think if you have it setup so that your Google voice rings after your at$t number it will use your minutes if you answer the call but not if it rings through to voicemail..only way to know is to call your phone from another..let it ring through to Google voicemail and leave a long message..and check usage(I'm on T-Mobile and it usually has a breakdown of recent activity within a couple hours) I know I see a lot of call forwarding on my bill but that's because my setup involves an extra number.

Hey all,
So I installed google voice so I could retrieve my voicemails, and there's no option in the new version that allows you to choose when to use google voice for calls.
So now, all of my outgoing calls are using my GVoice number instead of my cell number. I've tried signing out of GVoice as well as digging through all of the settings and it still remains. It even sends from my GVoice number when I text.
Anybody having this problem?
Thanks!
Nevermind.. Figured it out.
But for anyone wondering, you have to log into your account through the web and disable GVoice on your phone. You'll still get voicemails, but it won't call/text from that number.
So the issue is Google Voice app is now aware of being installed on a Sprint phone. The app will automatically integrate your service with GV is you dont pay attention. You can click "skip" when you first install and then it will convert to the normal install screens we are use to seeing. I totally missed it when I first installed, spent time on the phone with tech support etc. Hope this helps others.
I had the SAME problem and took me about a half hour to figure out what the hell was going on
Me too. I wasn't getting any SMS and I was like "what the [email protected]*K! Spent some time on the phone w/ tech support myself and that's when it dawned on me that I had integrated it w/ my HeroC.
I don't know if thus is the same issue but all my texts are coming through gv instead if the message app. Stock message app and I only use gv for vm. Any suggestions?

Uninstall GV
Go to GV on your computer and unlink your sprint and google number
Install GV
CLICK SKIP ON THE FIRST SCREEN!!!! <== for most people who use GV we dont read this but this is where it asked you to integrate your Sprint and GV number
??????
Profit!
Okay I somehow fixed my sms issue and now I have another issue. When I get a call or call my self from a seperate phone...on the calling phone, it rings normally. After about 4 rings, my phone, receiving the call, will start to play the ringtone which gives me 2 or so rings to answer. I have no idea what happened

It's a bug in the leak. Gvoice, or just check it if you miss a call. PITA, but I can't go back to froyo, like GB too much.
courtesy of my rooted bolt
just set up google voice - it is truly nice to have visual VM, plus the autovoice is soo much more pleasant.
It always annoyed me that in verizon's VM (well all the other carriers too) there are so many instructions after your greeting. I mean, everyone knows what to do and the 15 seconds or so of instructions puts you at something like 55 seconds into the call, so any message longer than 5 seconds puts you over the 1 minute mark. I'm convinced that vzw chooses to not let us bypass the instructions by default for this reason.
With GVoice, it's just a beep. That's a nice feature.

It's a known issue. Call your vmail when you miss a call, or get google voice
Maybe I'm an idiot but I can't figure it out. I'm new to Google voice.. I'm trying to use it for my voicemails but when I go through the setup it tells me my carrier doesn't support this feature..
Is the Thunderbolt not able to use Google voice to receive voicemails?

I was trying to use Google Voice to make free calls, but gave up due to worse quality then Skype.
I did try the voicemail feature once but had to logon to my google account from my pc. It apparently set up some sort of forwarding option and i had to call some google phone number to check my voicemails.
I've been using it for Voicemail only since i've owned the original Droid. Works fine on my thunderbolt. Setup just had to dial a number to forward my voice mail and that was it. I'm on stock rooted. ROM bug maybe?

Search Google voice on your PC once you are logged in there's a little gear on the top left of your web page. Click that and choose voice settings. I just did mine tonight. Lol

i came to post this. set it up from your PC then set google voice on your phone to control voice mail. that's all it takes.
U don't get to make free calls, just free text messaging. Also when u make calls it changes ur number. Say u call ur mom and her number is 123 5555555, but when u look at bill it will say I made the call but it won't show her number, shows the number google made up.

Add gv # to friends and family. Use gv callback. Done. Free.
So far the SGS2 is great except for one thing, the antiquated voice mail system app.
As much as the iPhone sucked a chubby, it did have that one good feature. I’ve searched the Market and Forum for something comparable but came up empty handed. I’m not looking for Dialers, Contacts, Voice Dial, or anything else fancy; I just want that damn Apple Voice Mail interface.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Would love to see someone put it in the stock Phone/Dialer.

Install Google Voice from the market, and then run it. Just follow the steps.
Don't know why I didn't install this earlier cause it freaking rules.

you can use google voice for free texting from your actual number? I used heywire for free texting, but people that texted my real # weren't notified that I couldn't receive texts, then I split an "unlimited" with a friend for $30/mo
Google voice does it for free from your real # without error?

yup. Or you can choose a new gvoice number, like having 2 lines, but ones is totally free! And people can call and text that number, and you will receive it on your device, also you can choose before each call whether to call from your g voice number or your reg number.
I've been using Google voice visual voice mail for years. Any reason to switch to Verizon's VVM?
Thanks!

Only if you have money to waste on an inferior product. That would be why.
Well that's not a very good answer, why not offer something more helpful as a reply. While I agree it may not be worth the money for some, it is for others. My answer is if you like what you have been using why change. Since I have not used Google Voice Visual Voicemail share some thoughts on what you like about it.
Google Voice will transcribe your vmail to text which is great for me. Sometimes I can't listen to my messages, but I can read them. I have found the GV transcription is not very good. I have used services that provide much better transcription, but those are not free like GV.
You can access your voice mails anytime on the Web. While transcription may not always be correct, you can keep all your clematis consolidated in one place.

i've been using google voice for about a year now. transcripts are usually not accurate at all. but, its a free cloud based voicemail.
the transcripts are actually quite funny to read sometimes. if you can read like that.
Yes, for a free voicemail service GV is great for my needs. And as mentioned, sometimes can get a good giggle out of the transcribes. For me they are at least close enough where even if I can't listen, I at least get an idea of what the message subject is(my wife asking wtf I'm not home yet)
Honestly reason for my support gv is my sister passed away like 2 years ago, & my best friend a year ago. One day I had searched for there named and all there voice mail came up. Lol I know that is a morbid reason. But point is, it stored them that long, and was able to download them.

I would also like this info, I was using a free one (can't recall the name) that i loved up to a year ago and they I guess went under. And i never understood how Google works. I just use Verizon's because it's simple.
Thanks for the replies. I just saw that Verizon's vvm was being added by a Dev to his rom and surmised there was a good reason. Not free and not better than Google vvm says otherwise (except that some companies might insist on it for work devices).

While Google's transcription may not be accurate, it is enough for me to get the gist of the message in a quick format.

I like Google Voice's transcript. It gives me something creative and funny to read.
I lived at my cabin for a couple years, no cell service for miles, but could wifi off a neighbors satellite internet service. Slow as heck, but GV transcription gave me enough info on voice mails to know if I had to make the trek down the mountain and make a call. Yes transcription is not perfect, but I can almost always figure it out. I don't pay for texting either, and GV is pretty limited in that regard but for the few times my kids text me instead of email I can get and respond, no mms though, and no short codes.

I think this is a really good point, and the reason I have stuck with GV - I can still get messages even when I don't have VZW service (or, if I just am simply not near my phone). And, though I don't see myself leaving VZW right now, if I did, GV is portable. I wouldn't have to do anything but set up forwarding on my new service.
There have been times (not recently, it's hard to "misplace and forget" a phone this big) that I would go to work and leave my phone at home. No worries, I pull up GV and can see if I am missing anything - calls, texts, etc. I can also have different voicemails for different groups, that I can change on the fly (i.e. if I did forget my phone, I would change my favorites group message - girlfriend, maybe parents - to ask them to call my firm instead since I left my phone at home) right from my work comp.
The "only" reason I can think of to switch to VZW VVM is if there is something lacking with GV. If you are happy with it, I say no reason to switch.
Boy do I sound like a shill for GV or what?
Just to add a comment to an issue I experience using GV.
If someone forwarded me a voicemail from their inbox, GV will never receive it and it would be stuck in Verizon's VM. I had no way to get at it.
If there is a work around for this, please let me know. I just wanted to add my experience.
