New tablet at 2.3.3 is update straight to honeycomb? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

So I bought a htc flyer on 2.3.3 and an Evo view with 2.3.4.
I am installing one in my car and am gonna use other as basic everyday tablet.
I have to update one to honeycomb as the dash trim will cover the physical buttons and honeycomb puts them on-screen. Just not sure what one I will put in the car yet. Evo views radio would help with gps i think.
Just wondering if I update the firmware does it go from 2.3.3 to honeycomb or does it have to step-up like first update goes to 2.3.4 and so on.

When I got my Flyer a few days ago, it did two OTA updates and is on 2.3.4. It says the Honeycomb 3.2 update is available but I'm not going to apply that because I want to keep the touch buttons on the bezel.

Unless you use a pen for input there is really no benefit to upgrade to HC IMHO.

Im not really into honeycomb for it either.
But Since im installing in the cars dash and the bezel buttons will be under the trim I need the on screen buttons. But at same time someone talked about gps problems in honeycomb, and thats its main use in the car.
Isn't there an app to put the back, home buttons on screen?
Maybe thats best bet

Go for it, GingerBread blows like a big old cell phone IMHO

Ive seen a few posts of GPS problems with honeycomb, now im leary about it. Thats a big reason why im installing it, for built in gps

I upgraded to honeycomb and I"m glad I did. I'll give HTC credit for modifying gingerbread to the point that it worked better on a tablet, at least what little I saw of it, but overall it's just not meant for a tablet. Honeycomb gives the tablet a much more "windows" look, and many apps are altered for it, and I like the virtual buttons better anyway.
As far as updating, it ran 2 GB updates on mine, one for sense I think, and the other was a security update.

For me HC is better because I can maximize stylus for taking note, etc..
I still missed the HW Buttons, althouh Leedroid rom activate the HW buttons but still not perfect (does not work on portrait)

Default Wifi Flyer ROM?!

Does anyone know if there is a default Wifi ROM for the Flyer I bought from Best Buy? I want to go back to the default setup as many things don't work.
Thanks,

I've not seen it floating around anywhere yet.
A bunch of us have been looking for this. I'd be a little more adventurous with the HC Beta ROMs if I had a failsafe in place (stock RUU).

Hm... what about their Facebook? Seems to be quite active. I think Honeycomb would give this tablet new life IMO.
I took a nose dive and installed honeycomb anyway. And I can say I am quite impressed only problem I have is fring and my fron facing came. It's just upside down in portrait mode. Other than that I have personally no problems and I use it all day. Hopefully a ruu will surface soon. But I won't need it until the real hc comes out for our flyers

Was the process pretty easy? Are you running the wi-fi flyer?
Its pretty easy to get to HC but you can't go back and while most things in HC beta work well, here's what I found.
Love the ROM. Only issues I have found are with the camera not working or very flaky with several apps including Skype, Paper Camera, Camera 360, SnapBooth, Notes, etc.
Additional bugs I found.
Mail widget stops working often
Bluetooth headset does not work properly. The devices pair fine and Audio out is ok , but the microphone on the head set is not used. Audio in is input from the Flyer's built in mic. I tired both a Jabra 3030 and a Motorola S9-HD
Tried with apps, Voice Search, Skype, and GrooveIP.
I have a wifi only US model Flyer
I've emailed them via their website, and get the standard "Thanks for you're email. We're working hard to provide the software updates you're asking about. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook for the latest news."
I wasn't asking about a software update, just when the WiFi BB RUU would be release...so it must be a standard answer.

Yes I have the WiFi flyer. And yes the process is very easy. It's not noob friendly. I have a noon account but I'm not a noon been flashing and customizing phones and all since the g1 so always had adb. Just never contributed the knowledge I have. I had a lot of mistakes but figured out how to fix just by reading. Read up on everything first before you flash anything. The things it may do or may not do may or may not interest. Everyone one has the personal interests and pet peeves. I like it. But u might not. Read up on threads and posts and check it out.
Personal disclaimer.....lol
I can't stress this enough. I took the risks. My idea may not b the best idea. If anything happens. I don't know you and I was drunk when I typed this........lol

Pretty sure once we (wifi flyer people) go Honeycomb, you can't go back. LeeDroid is gingerbread, so no-go for us.
If you have a USA flyer, you are stuck with HC once you go. Other countries, some can get back to GB with a RUU flash. LeeDroid is GB.
The first thing I did when I got this thing was make a stock ROM from a backup. I have a deodexed, rooted, battery percentage version as well. If anyone wants it let me know. It's the shipped 1.36.1540.32 ROM.
Unfortunately that does not help if you install HC, you cannot use a backup of a GB ROM with the HC recovery.

[Q] HC and hardware buttons

Started along my Android journey 2 weeks ago by selling my.iPhone 4 and buying a Motorola milestone 2 phone and now a HTC flyer 3g.
sorta got used to the hardware buttons on the flyer. will HC remove their functionality completely or is it likely to come back at some stage? does anyone know why they have been removed?
thanks
Hardware buttons are not able to be used in hc by Google's design. Will have to stick with GB or wait till ICS if you want them back.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
thanks for the answer. what noticeable benefits with HC? I I might stay with GB as I really like the hardware buttons
Just flashed hc and really like so far, the os is much better for tablets, can also use the pen everywhere!
There is a bottom bar instead of hw buttons, and this is fine in portrait mode (which is best for flyer generally), but is more noticable in landscape. I haven't watched any vids yet to know how it affects those
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
Not likely they will be back in HC since they are redundant with the on screen system bar which cannot be removed. Use it for a few days and you will forget the hard buttons were even there.
Hardware buttons are removed from Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as well so I doubt they will be back. Not sure if it is possible for a Developer to make them work on a custom ROM or not. I have been trying ICS on my Evo and my buttons work.

I'm pretty sure that if the hardware buttons are on the device they will be used in ICS instead of the on screen buttons. Why waste screen space with the on screen buttons when you have them built in?

I guess what I meant to say was they are starting to move away from hardware buttons altogether.
I think ICS has built-in calls to hide the soft-buttons, HC does not. You won;t be seeing a full working ICS for the Flyer anytime soon though. Not until HTC releases a working ROM or a ICS on a HTC device that is close enough to port.
If HC on the Flyer does not use the capacitive buttons, it is not worth it for me losing about 10% of the display in landscape mode. I will not update and thanks for letting me know! Flyer works great already and a 7" tablet IMO is small enough without losing space.
As far as ICS, it has already been pointed out that OEMs can choose to use the capacitive buttons, if a device has them. Imagine the uproar from people with small phone displays if losing space to a nav bar.
Nexus does this, but has a bigger display, so the actual usable display size minus the fixed nav bar is a tad under 4.3". The buttons are only hidden in ICS during some types of video playback, but apparently nothing else. The bar is always there- just like HC.
Added: Since capacitive buttons can be used, I would expect them to be around longer, since cheaper to put capacitive buttons, rather than bigger displays: Also better on battery life.
You do not have to lose the space and get much more back in return
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
I'm trying to understand the negative view on the Honeycomb bar. It replaces the system bar, which we have at the top of the screen now, so we don't loose much, right? Perhaps a few more pixels, but...that's it, right?
I do like the hardware buttons, but its not like we're going from no status bar to a huge one; we're going from a smaller one to a slightly larger one with more functionality.
Or am I missing something?
Your not missing anything people are making something out of nearly nothing and are ignoring the drastic user interface improvements. The only time I use honeybar to remove honeycomb bar is if watching videos. Now if I wanted to use my flyer as a phone. That is a different story
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
Not seeing how it is something out of nothing, since you lose more than 10% of display space in landscape mode- it is taken by the nav bar. The same one on my Thrive, except it is a 10" display, so not as bad.
Before updating, check out the Acer 7" and see if you like it. I found it cramp and appreciate the extra display space on the Flyer with GB. ICS can use the capacitive buttons and not use the nav bar, but HC can not.
All up to choice. I choose to not have a smaller display on an already small 7" tablet, since the Flyer already has nav buttons. Eveybody else can knock themselves out and enjoy HC Added: As far as rooting to get a work around, my Flyer works great as is, so not risking the root process- Flyer rocks.

I wish that were the case than you are right- no problem. Thing is the bars in GB go away when playing a game, surfing (if you choose to) or watching a movie. The bar does NOT go away with HC. The buttons darken, but the big bar is still there and over 10% of the display is gone for good.
Incorrect if you use honeybar

But need to be rooted to use it. If simple like the Incredible, Droid 3 and Razr, no problem, but the process seems too risky when the Flyer already performs great for me. No need to rock the boat and no need to lose display space to a nav bar.

I guess when full-screen is no longer really full-screen, I get it. Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to Honeycomb, though...
I might as well whine in here too....
I really really really want at least one hardware (physical) button on the front of device. I don't get it why all manufacturers decided that there is no real need for it. Take the damn ipad for example: that thing is easy to turn on with the front button. I used to have old android phone with Green and Red phone buttons and it was so comfortable to turn on the phone using them. When I upgraded to Galaxy S, man I have missed those... got used to power button with time because device is small. With flyer and other tablets it is a bit different story. It lays on my desk and I have to use two hands to turn on the damn thing. One hand to hold the device, another to push the power button. It is a small thing, but it is quite uncomfortable.
Back to the topic... For those in doubt.. HC upgrade is worth it. You're not loosing much, but overall HC is better IMHO.
Does anybody know a good task manager/killer for HC that maybe integrates with multitasking preview (I know that I'm not supposed to use it... blah...blah...blah...)?
You can use any of the 10 or so task killers on the market, they will all work just as poorly as any for HC. As you have pointed out, not needed and will adversely affect your performance / battery if you try to automate it.
If your device is on the desk, plugged in, just set the display to never time out and you never need to turn it back on....

[Q] [View] is rollback to GB possible?

Hey All, I know it's probably early for this... but is it possible to roll the OTA Honeycomb back to 2.3.4?
i recently bought the View for the wife and she's spent a couple weeks getting to know it and had it set pretty much how she wanted it (her first Android, and not rooted). I told to go ahead and do the update and now she's flipping over how it's completely different.
Thanks
there is a sticky at the top of the page with the answer...no it's not possible and not likely to be for some time.
great... I've read the thread over a couple times and have also been refreshing this forum for the last hour. I saw a lot of talk about rooted Views, wasn't sure how that pertained to a stock one.

I for one, would love to see the device with the official Honeycomb upgrade. If any early adapter would please do a 5 minute video, showing us the layout and operations. I'm really curious how the HTC Sense interface works in the HC system.
Secondly, if there are any apps that cease to function, I'd like to know ahead of time.

okay, spent the morning on the phone with the store I bought it from, the local 'repair' store, Sprint support, Sprint Resolution, HTC support, HTC return/repair, and back to the store I bought it from.
No one will roll it back, either for lack of ability or desire... and I'm 2 days past the 14 day return period on the new device. LUCKILY... the local store manager gave in and is approving the exchange! I'm off to the store now... wish me luck.

I don't have the HC update yet, but I kind of scratch my head at all of the people complaining about the buttons taking up the screen. Right now along the top of GB you have a bar running. Now the bar is at the bottom and has buttons on it. I guess to me it seems pretty much the same, minus maybe a few pixel lines. I suppose it's a different story full screen, I guess it's just not that big a deal to me.
It is only a big deal because we have the hardware buttons.

[Q] Flyer HC vs GB

Ok firstly, a little intro. I have been using this forums for awhile, but i hardly post, kinda new to tablets, only had a fake one before that ran 2.2 Froyo. Anyway, i got the flyer for just less than 5 months or so and when i bought it, it already had Honeycomb 3.2 on.
I never really got to test GB or anything, im currently running LeeDroids HC rom. After browsing around the forums i keep seeing threads like "Honeycomb sucks" etc etc, can any1 tell me why specifically? Is GB Smoother? what about pen usage etc. Please no random answers that don't have a basis.
Ok and finally, just a random Q, LeeDroid's rom enabled GSM calls for the flyer, agen, noob at tablets so the only way i found to make a call is to save the contact first and then dial it, How do i load prepaid data and airtime onto the tablet without switching sims with my phone?
Any help would be appreciated thanks.
You should have a dialer when selecting phone or you can get the dialer widget
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA Premium HD app
Thanks for the reply, but in my Phone app, i can type a number, but i only have an option to save it, once i save it i can make a call from there, however this doesn't work with service numbers that contain * or # . I tried downloading a dialer app, this one has a phone button, but wen i use it, it says telephone not supported on this device.
Inside Leedroid hc v4.3.0 the is a default dialer widget that workers for me

GB seems to be a bit better on resources and is smoother than HC (at least on mine). HC has a different interface which some find to be better for a tablet (I do) and has more support for pen functions (most the really good pen apps won't run on GB). There are numerous users who have trouble with GPS when using an HC rom.
That is about all I can say without stating opinions supporting either side.
Well, my phone GPS seems to be better than the flyer's so im ok with that, thanks for the response, appreciate it. Looks like il stay on honeycomb, just installed CoolHoney 3d, its smoother than normal, not as smooth as ICS tho. Thanks again.

Flyer hc vs gb
First off i had both GB and HC on my flyer and i can tell you there is a big difference between them. Since your flyer came with HC you wouldn't know that GB allowed you to have more screens than the 5 that you now control. In other instances While on GB my battery literally lasted a whole week on one charge. For some reason HC caused me to continue to charge my flyer [i was doing the same hing that i was while on GB]. GB runs smooth for a phone update, but doesn't seem like it's for tablets. HC {in my case} allowed me to download a lot more apps then i could with GB.I don't know how it is for you but HC causes a significant drop in Wifi capability on my Flyer and was laggy most of the time. A good thing about HC is that it allows you to use the scribe to it's fullest by using it as a stylus in apps {for example some games allow you to use the scribe like you would a mouse},can use it to turn your flyer to a notebook {with the right apps of course {quill, lecture notes, notes}.
i hope this helps.
I've usen GB and HC, too, but switched back to GB (caused a whole day of work ). I have to say, that I am using just Original-ROMs, because I use it for taking notes at the University.
Pros GB:
-The smallest Pen in the PDF-App is much thinner than in HC
-Working Buttons (Home, Menu, Back)
-Green design (sounds stupid, but I like green much more than the blue design of Anroid 3+)
Pros HC:
-Bigger Homescreens
-System-wide Pen support
Really want to try GB, but few things first
Does the pen ONLY work in HTC Notes app?
ima kinda confused at this, i know honeycomb lets you use it in games and stuff, but what about apps like papyrus? It asks if you have a HTC flyer pen, you can enable and disable it.
According to your post, i take it that quill and lecture notes doesn't work in GB with the pen, although i do find myself using the stock notes app more, mainly because of the combination of typing and writing, which i want. Also what about Polaris office? It allows you to use your pen... well in HC, what about GB?

No, it works in Notes, PDF-Viewer, eBook-Viewer, the Album. And if you tap on the screen in another App, it makes a screenshot, on which you can draw something.

Do you mean "Papyrus Ex"? I've tried it right now: Nothing. It asks for a path, but not for a pen. I haven't found an App, which allows Scribe-Support on GB, I belive its a HC-Only Feature.
I love the Stock Notes App. Do you have an Evernote-Account? If not, give it a try. The only thing that I am missing is a checkered background. That whould be great!
Polaris Office is preinstalled, but the pen just takes a picture.

[Q-Flyer] Purchased second hand Flyer. Dont know what ROM is best suited for it.

Hi Everyone.
Have been searching around the net for 2 days without much luck
HTC Flyer I purchased:
Flyer P510e
Android: 3.2.1
HTC Sense: 1.1 for tablet
Software number: Cool3d Honey V6
Baseband: 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.07_M
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.14-LeeDrOiD-HC-V3.3.0-g6d7c2c0
Im guessing by the kernel version it has been ROM'd with LeeDrOiD correct ?
I would love to take this back to the stock ROM it would have come with but have no idea out of the list of thousands which one is the right one for my device. Or should i be going for another ROM all together that is more recent ?
Never done this before so please forgive me for being cautious. I just dont want to brick it on my first attempt.
I would like to be able to use it like my HTC Desire HD and do the customary updates and so forth. My Desire HD has never failed me and I have had it for 2 years.
Im from Australia, and going through the list of stock ROMs available, i see many countries listed, asia, india, US, blah blah.
So which ROM is best for my Flyer ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
hello, i buy my flyer not long time so far. i used it as my phone with bluetooth headset. i stay on maxdroid128 rom based 2.3.4. on 2.3.4 is the phone function more stable. the nice pen works much better on android 3.+, it has full support for screen. on 2.3 you can only use a few things, notes and scribble. i flashed coolhoney last week, i flashed back to 2.3 because phone, and i have the bug on coolhoney that the screen goes off after e few seconds. when you need no phone you can go to ics or jb roms, only bugs i hope is broken front cam. i read in last time around one week to find the suited rom for me. i hope that helps a little.

It really all depends on what you want to be able to do with the tablet. Currently it is running the latest Cool3D Honey rom which is an HC rom using LeeDroid kernel. If you want to go back to stock, which is GB, then you will have to downgrade your hboot. Just do some searching and reading first.
HC roms are going to give you the most pen funtionality and allow use of apps designed for tablets. Most have 90-100% functionality but speed may be hindered a bit over GB. Just read the changelog for the rom.
ICS/JB roms are going to give a quick interface with the more up-to-date features but you will have to sacrifice functionality somewhere whether it be in BT, phone, video acc., camera, etc. Again, just read the changelog for the rom.
Me personally, unless you want to use your tablet as a giant phone than I would stay on 3.0+ because GB was never meant to be a tablet OS.

Thanks for that feedback much appreciated!!
I ended up soft bricking it and of course i didnt realise about the power drain on the battery and not being able to recharge it. So im currently waiting on a few electronic parts to arrive so i can attach the battery to an external charger and start from scratch.
Trying to find the proper thread with good details on how to take the hboot backwards is a pain, as many of them have different methods and as i have found out, most of them dont work, or are lacking details in some way or another. Hence i ended up where i am.
following this thread to get my battery charged again.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422687&page=2
and then will attempt this one and hopefully get it right:

I have these 3 RRU's so im hoping one of them will get me back to stock *fingers crossed):
RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.00.405.3_R_Radio_20.3501.30.089BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed

RUU_Flyer_HC_S_HTC_WWE_3.55.405.1_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.07_M_release_226690_signed
they were the only ones i could find a decent download as all the ones listed here are through the website that asks you to become a member to download over 500bm, annoying. But the website i found is free to download no matter what size. Which is a breath of fresh air.
If you know of a better RRU for me to try, please let me know, and where to get it from.
Couple of more days and i should see how it goes.
Thanks again!!
