[Q] Flashing back to stock after using CF-root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off my phone specs are...
SGS2 on the 3/Vodafone network Australia
P-Code is GT-I9100LKJHUT
Model number GT-I9100T
Android Version 2.3.5
Baseband Version I9100TDUKJ1
Kernal Version 2.6.35.7-I9100TDUKJ1-CL687461
[email protected] #2
Build Number Gingerbread.DUKJ1
*#1234# returns...
PDA: I9100TDUKJ1
Phone: I9100TDUKJ1
CSC: I9100THUTKJ1
Build Info: Wed Oct 26 13:30:25 KST 2011
I've flashed with this... CF-Root-SGS2_XW_LUX_KJ1-v5.0-CWM5.tar ...to get root and all seems fine, the above specs remain the same except of course the kernel version which is now... 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKJ1-CL647431 [email protected] #2.
I used Checkfus to get this matching stock rom... I9100TDUKJ1_I9100THUTKJ1_I9100TDUKJ1_HOME.tar.md5 ... i'm guessing it's a full rom because the size is almost a gig unpacked. What i'd like to know is if i want to go back to stock kernel can i just pull the particular file (zImage? please correct me if i'm wrong) out of the rom (if thats even possible) and put it in a .tar file to use in Odin or, can i just point the PDA section of Odin to the full stock rom file and let it sort out what it needs and hope it just flashes the kernel, thanks for any help.

You just use the .tar.md5 inside the rar file, place it in the PDA section of Odin to flash back to stock.
Even after doing this your kernel version will not change, you may be thinking because it says "root" its representation that your phone is rooted but thats not the case its just the info on what computer etc your phone was loaded with its original firmware (Somebody correct me if i'm wrong) .
P.s. If your doing this for warranty purposes you will need to get a usb jig to reset your flash counter, search forum first as you will need to flash and older bootloader for it to work.

Thanks for the reply but i think you may have misunderstood my question....
... this file i downloaded through CheckFus "I9100TDUKJ1_I9100THUTKJ1_I9100TDUKJ1_HOME.tar.md5" is almost 1gb in size which leads me to believe that it is a full stock rom and not just a kernel, so all i'd like to have confirmed is if i use it in Odin will it over-write everything on my phone (apps, games, settings, data etc) or will Odin only flash what's needed to bring the kernel version back to stock. Thanks again.
P.S. i'm not bothered about the triangle or flash counter or warranty issues as yet.

Yes. You can pull the zImage of the stock kernel & flash just that in Odin.

Cheers for that brother. Quite possibly stating the obvious but the zImage has to be in a .tar file format right? Thanks again.

Right. I use tar on a Linux machine to tar just the kernel ('zImage'). Flashing the resulting archive will flash just the kernel.

[Q] Debrand, etc. [A] How to root GT-I9100T (Australian user)

Hey everyone,
First post, n00b question - please be gentle.
First, I'll start with a positive. I have come from using an iPhone, and I was quiet comfortable with jailbreaking and cydia. I now have a Samsung Galaxy S 2 / II (GT-I9100T). I am from Australia, and on the Telstra network. Whoever is in the same boat would know it is quiet an adjustment, but you can root! (if you wanted to know).
I followed this persons 3 part guide and with sucess:
I cannot post the link but it is on YouTube and the video title is:
How To Root The Samsung Galaxy S II - Part 1
How To Root The Samsung Galaxy S II - Part 2
How To Root The Samsung Galaxy S II - Part 3
Username is mattj101101
I had Android 2.3.3 installed.
Second part is a question, is there any debranding roms / kernals that is ok for the GT-I9100T? I have tried the *#272*IMEI# but it only had 'Preconfig - TEL'
My phones info:
PDA: 19100TDVKF4
PHONE: I9100TDVKF2
CSC: I9100TTELFK3
My Kernal version, after the root is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513root<insertATsymbol>DELL103 #2
Hopefully with these answers I can help other fellow people out with this particular model (that are sold in Australia). Also if someone has the stock Telstra rom for re-flashing (if needed for warrenty) please point me in the right direction.
Thank-you.
Hey,
Ive got the GT-I9100T from Vodafone (both can run on the telstra bandwidth now ) and have had no issues flashing most roms. Only thing you may notice is the new modems aren't as good as the stock ones you currently have, so you may need to reflash the original modem through odin to get the best support.
Before you do flash though, make sure you back up your /efs folder, it contains the bin files for your IMEI for your phone, and people have reported flashing a rom can change that, so beware! also, before you do flash, try find the stock telstra rom for your phone incase you need to reflash. There are a few threads about it all, so good luck
The i9100T can use i9100 roms, but it will change the product code to i9100.
Easiest way to root is using CF-root, match the part of the version number in bold "PDA: 19100TDVKF4"
My phones info:
PDA: The rom/kernel
PHONE: The modem/radio, responsable for signal quality and speed, you dont need to match this to rom version, and the best way to find a good one is to test different ones.
CSC: APN settings and bundles apps, no need to match this, but if you do chose to all you may have todo is enter your APN settings for internet and MMS manually.
You can flash any rom onto any SGS2 via odin, see this guide, that will debrand etc.
Also, you rooted using a very old insecure kernel, people have had random reboots with that one, I suggest you flash back your stock kernel (you will keep root) or flash a version of cf-root (you will gain clockworkmod recovery, a way to flash roms/etc from your phone, and nandroid, a whole phone backup system, like snapshots)
I would recommend flashing DarkyRom2 on your S2. Runs fast, stable and great battery life. It roots your phone as well and changes your kernel to SuperCore which has a lot of optimisations.
Instructions:
Since you're not rooted (stock firmware/kernel)
1. Flash SuperCore_1.7.tar with Odin (put in PDA and do NOT tick repartition)
2. Get DarkyROM2 Tool and Superuser from market
3. Upload DarkyROM2_XXKH3_Base_R2.zip to SD-Card (INTERNAL)
4. Open DarkyROM2 tool. Accept SuperUser access request notification (this confirms you are rooted.
4. Under the DarkyRom tab, be sure "Wipe User data" is selected AND "INSTALL MODEM" is NOT SELECTED. (this will wipe everything from your phone but keep your stock KF4 modem. Any other modem causes signal problems for our I-9100T. )
5. No need to select "Install Kernel" Since SuperCore 1.7 is already installed.
5. Go back to the General Tab and use "Flash/Install File from SDCARD" to browse to and install DarkyROM2_XXKH3_Base_R2.zip
6. Wait for the phone to reboot and flash the new firmware
Get the files here:

I modified the instructions given on that link and posted it above for you since it's a little different for our I-9100T phones.

Interestingly, I just purchased a SGS2 here in Thailand (I'm also an Aussie) and the model of the phone is GT-I9100T.
Unfortunately I cannot seem to find a KL2 kernel for CF-Root to patch it with... any suggestions?
Also, the site that held all the OEM kernels (MultiUpload) for download is now showing a "Shut down by the FBI" logo : )
As long as you're certain you've got a I9100T, use the KL1 CFRoot kernel. Will work fine.

My phone details are as follows:
Model: GT-I9100T
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: I9100TDCKL1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100TDCKL2-CL767350 [email protected]#2
Build: GINGERBREAD.DCKL2
This is not an Aussie phone such as the Telstra I9100T that I see spoken about.
I purchased this phone here in Thailand 3 days ago and I have a few questions.
1. Is there a way to backup the original kernel before rooting?
2. Will the KL1 kernal make me lose things such as Thai language options etc?
3. Any way to restore the KL2 kernel in the future?
Thanks for taking the time to reply!

1) Doubt it. And the only link for DCKL2/Thailand in Intra's official firmware thread is dead as it was MegaUpload, and he more than likely won't have a backup (you could always ask him tho). Search around elsewhere online, you might find a copy of this kernel somewhere.
2) I don't know for certain, but I don't think so. I would have thought something like language would be more firmware-related.
3) Refer to 1) I don't see why you'd need to ? In order to get warranty service from Samsung, all you'd need to do is flash the most recent firmware available for your phone (for all they know you could easily have got this from an OTA update via Kies), do a factory reset/make sure there's no apps left on your phone that could tip off whomever repairs it that the phone was rooted, and use a jig to reset the flash counter. Obviously there are no rolled gold guarantees with getting warranty service once you've voided same by rooting the phone/running non-stock firmware firmware on it, tho.

I was just worried it might stop future updates to ICS or similar via Kies.
At least I think I've managed to find another copy of the latest kernal on a site other than MegaUpload...
It's at 50% and counting : )
3) Refer to 1) I don't see why you'd need to ? In order to get warranty service
Running a CFRoot kernel over stock firmware should still allow you to receive OTA updates via Kies. If you find it doesn't, simply use Checkfus (search for it on here), it allows you to find/download the latest firmware for your phone/country that you'd normally get via Kies.
Really ? Cool Might wanna post a linky to your source over in Intra's thread. I'm sure there will be other people who might need it at some stage.

Ok so would you believe...
I ran the guide from Intra.
Installed an insecure ROM and then ran SuperOneClick and was rooted.
I restored the OEM kernel that I found online and BINGO - UNROOTED!
I repeated the procedure just to check everything again... same deal!
Phone is currently unrooted again...

Yeah, if you flash an original (unrooted) kernel over your rooted kernel you'll lose root.
There's a procedure for removing the yellow warning triangle at boot in the CFRoot thread & also retaining root, but I found it too fiddly when I first rooted my phone so I simply bought a jig & did it that way.
I can't speak for anything to do with SuperOneClick as I've never used it.

Apparently so... now I'm confused about what the guide was trying to achieve.
Also, Kies now tells me it's not compatible with my device... Perfect!

As I said, I have no idea whatsoever about anything to do with SuperOneClick. If you want a rooted phone minus the yellow warning triangle at boot without fiddling around, root it with a CFRoot kernel, buy a $3 jig from eBay, done.
So far as Kies not working, you could try uninstalling/reinstalling Kies, or simply use Checkfus as I've said previously. Me, I'd use Checkfus. Quick, easy & like the paragraph above, no fiddling around.
Edit to add - Yes, obviously Kies won't work if you're running an "insecure rom" as per your post above. I presume you mean a custom rom you found somewhere on here or elsewhere ? One of my earlier posts did say Kies should (not always) work if you're running a rooted kernel over a stock Samsung rom. If you're running a non-stock rom Kies won't work.

Ditch Kies there is a better alternative out there. MyphoneExplore, do a seach via google. You'll also need to get the app client software from the android market. I use it to synch my work Outlook Calendar to my phone. You can also back up your contacts, sms and call records.

Edit: I tried CF-Root KL3 (wanted KL2) and it seems fine so far.
I have root and everything else seems the same (Thai language support etc.)
I'll keep you posted : )
Thanks for taking the time to deal with my issues!
Hope I can do the same for some others on this Forum in the future.
I'd not heard of Checkfus so I'll give that a try, thanks : )
There's no CF-Root to match my phone exactly but I guess there's nothing to lose now by trying something close : P
I ordered the jig almost a week before getting the phone but it seems the postage to Thailand is sloooow.
I'm running a stock ROM and unrooted but Kies is still misbehaving.

Something may have borked so far as the CSC goes (which tells Kies, the Market, etc where you are). I did say you should be able to use Kies, you're not the first person to have problems with it after rooting
Personally speaking, I've never used Kies & almost certainly won't use it. Ever. Custom roms/kernels are a piece of you know what to flash via CWRecovery (or Odin for that matter), and official firmware updates are easy to get with Checkfus & flash via Odin if I ever have to go down that path for warranty purposes or whatever.
Kies is a truly awful piece of software
Edit to add after your edit - No worries

When I got home I plugged it into Kies on the home PC and everything was fine!
Have you experimented much with any Custom ROM's?

Flash baseband but not ROM?

Hi,
I am with AT&T in the US and recently bought the Galaxy S2. My device happens to be a French version. My firmware is
PDA: KG1 / PHONE: KG1 / CSC: KG2 (XEF). It's 2.3.3.
I'm not happy with my HSPA+ data connection. While streaming online radio in moving car, it would cut out and constantly buffer. Seems like the data stream is not reconnecting quickly enough whenever there's handoff. This has never happened in my old webOS Pre Plus. The streaming on the same route that I drive daily on the Pre Plus was never an issue.
I don't want to mess with flashing to a different ROM (yet), but is it possible to just replace/flash the baseband only? Perhaps I can try the official ATT baseband? I did a search and am overwhelmed with the amount of info on XDA. I appreciate you help. Thank you.

You will need to root it to be able to install different modems using CWM recovery or you can use Odin to do it with out root if you can find modem packaged for Odin, as for the AT&T modem while it will work okay for data your call quality will be terrible so it is not really an option for an international version SGS2.
jhernand1102 - Thanks for your quick reply! I've done some flashing before on other devices, so I'm not totally unfamiliar with the process. So it is possible to install a different modem without completely flashing to a different ROM? I see that you're in the US. Can you suggest a modem? What do you use?

Yes, it is possible to flash another modem file to your phone.
The easiest way of doing so is to flash it as zip file via CWM.
But you can also flash the modem.bin file (extract the zip file first) via Odin (in PHONE section).
Here are two links to the latest modem files:
1. => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1277593&highlight=Modem+XXKI3
But you need CWM to flash this Modem zip files.
2. => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17967764&postcount=5
Same here, but you can extract the Modem.bin file out of the zip file and flash it using (Phone section in) Odin.
Good luck!

Thanks It_ler. I think your links were truncated, and as a result, it's not coming up. I have Odin on my computer. In your view, is it better to use Odin or CWM?
JackTheMan18 - I don't have issues with voice calls on ATT, but it's the HSPA+ connection when streaming is what I'm not happy about.

Searched myself in this forum and while copying&pasting ... something went wrong.
I don't have a personal prefer ... Odin or CWM ?!
If your phone is rooted and you already have CWM, it is the easiest way to flash modem zip file using CWM.
As I am running on CF-Root kernel which has installed CWM Manager app, I would flash the modem zip file using CWM.
But normally, I choose my ROM and modem and CSC before flashing ... and then I flash all the files I want together at once via Odin.
So, it's up to you !

It_ler - Thank you so much! You've been incredibly helpful! Since you are so knowledgeable, I hope you might be able to answer this follow up question. As I indicated, I'm stuck on the French 2.3.3 ROM.
1. Can I just flash a 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 stock ROM without rooting but using ODIN? Will that be a clean wipe or will it just upgrade and keep all my app and settings?
2. Will doing so prevent Kies from offering me future updates? I don't care about CSC, in fact, half the French customizations on my unit don't work here in the US. My first SGS2 unit that was defective was an UK version (I assume so because it came installed with the BBC app).
3. What's a good stock ROM to put on?
You are awesome!

I thought that you already knew about the basics, but here they are:
a) To get familiar with flashing ROMs / kernels / etc., find official firmwares, stock kernels, etc. and to learn the "manual" rooting method, read the first post of Intratech's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Official firmwares are in the second post, and Frankenstein versions (which can be combined with any other modem and/or CSC) are in the third post.
Every ROM is non-wipe - except Intratech has explicitly written that it is a "wipe" version.
Flashing is by using Odin and does not require root.
But Intratech has added a Quick Rooting Guide, just in case you need it.
b) To find the easiest way of rooting, please stick to Chainfire's CF-Root thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root.
There you learn to root your phone and get ClockWorkMod (CWM) Manager app with CWM recovery mode, system backup&recovery feature, flashing other kernels and zip files, etc..
Nothing to bother. I just flashed CF-Root kernel because it is so easy and I wanted to be able to backup my system.
Now I can answer your questions:
1. Yes, stick to Intratech's description and use a non-wipe ROM to flash using Odin (PDA section).
2. As KIES will only recognize and update official/stock ROMs available in/for your region, flashing any other ROM or kernel will prevent KIES from doing so.
But I don't care too. Flashing with Odin is very easy, fast and as stable as the ROM you are flashing.
I stick to the official/stock ROMs provided by Intratech - they have always doing fine for me.
3. I recommend the latest Frankenstein ROM, which is actually XWKJ1 (which I am running now).
It is Android 2.3.5, good balance between performance and battery life, excellent modem (XXKI3) and you can combine it with any other modem or CSC for your region and/or provider.
Just put this ROM in PDA, your modem in PHONE and your CSC in CSC section of Odin and flash all at once.
If you will find the descriptions and/or files helpful, please remember to push the Thanks button for Intratech and Chainfire, as they both do a great job for all of us.
Wow! It_ler - thank you for all the great info! Just a quick question. Does XWKJ1 have any issues. For example, does google video chat still work?

I did not recognize any issue yet.
But Google Talk is without Video chat.
You can replace it with a leaked Talk app with Video chat enabled.
Just have a look here => http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-install-google-talk-1.3-with-video-chat-on-any-android-phone-root-only/
But you have to use CWM recovery mode to install it.
I did not use ROM-Manager as described, I used CWM Manager (of CF-Root) to install it.
Please remember to wipe cache partition and dalvik cache as described.
And make a system backup before ... Just in case ...
Good luck!

I was able to install XXKI3 radio. It didn't make a difference. Turns out that I needed to disable fast dormancy. The data connection seems more stable. I will have to test it out further on Monday. In regards to Frankensteinrom XWKJ1, is it already rooted?
If I discover problem on my end with that Frankensteinrom, can I flash back to official ROM without wipe? Thanks!

Neither official nor Frankenstein versions are rooted.
If you want to Root, follow the instructions of Intratech or Chainfire to do so.
You can flash back to an Official ROM.
If you want to flash without wipe, you have to use a non-wipe version.
So, no problem with most of the versions from Intratech's thread.

[Q] Entropy's UCKK6 System Package VS. Odin one click UCKH7

Howdy fellas,
I'm trying to root my stock SGS2 with 2.3.6 - UCKK6. I cannot find "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" DL link that works. Is there another location besides multi/mega and rootzwiki? Also, as this will downgrade my phone and I'll have to wipe, I was looking into Entropys system package to flash via Odin. I have the package but the UCKH7 modem.bin DL link is also broken.
First, do I even have to flash the modem.bin file as its UCKH7? If so, does anyone know where I can find it? Second, is Entropy's system package method the preferred method for me? I just want root no custom ROM and no flash counter trip would be great too. This is all so confusing it has taken me days just to get to this immature comprehension level. That being said I appreciate any feedback.
As far as I know, all links in my guides and the Download Repository are working. See links in my signature. You should be able to find whatever you decide to use.
The UCKH7 and UCKK6 modems are different. Either one will work with both UCKH7 and UCKK6 systems. The modems are in the Download Repository as well.
If you flash anything containing the stock kernel, whether UCKH7 or UCKK6, you will not increment the flash counter. The only thing that increments the flash counter is flashing a custom kernel with Odin or Heimdall.
Excellent. Got the package and the modem through your download repository! For the UCKH7 package I noticed you say to flash package and modem separately in PDA. I was going to flash package in PDA and modem in PHONE so I'm glad you directed me here...Should I flash separately with the UCKK6 package/modem in PDA or simultaneously in PDA+PHONE? And good to know about the flash counter. Thank you so much for the help. I mean that.
Firmware and modem are both flashed in the PDA slot. Flash separately. You can flash both at the same time if they are packaged into the same tar.
Got the KK6 tar from your download repository. If I use ODIN to flash this, do I need to flash the KK6 modem too? Will this allow me to avoid a factory reset/wipe?

Look in settings | about phone to see what you baseband version is currently, as that is the modem. If you already have I777UCKK6, then no point in flashing it again. You can use whatever modem works best for you in your area.
If you're on UCKK6 and you flash UCKK6, you should be fine without a wipe.
Makes sense, but just wanted to be sure. Thanks.

Worked for me!
Hey guys, i am NEw and confused just like that first guy who posted this, but i am getting hang of it too now.
so ya i got sgs2 running on 2.3.6 with this uckk6 kernal what should i download so i can get this rooted started up? i know the steps once i get all the RIGHT files download, just need someone to get me RIGHT method
thanks!!!
Here is what I did...Im not sure if I did everything right but it worked. I have the at&t sg2 I777 build UCKK6.
- download odin v1.85, UCKK6 system package, and modem.bin from creepyncrawlys download repository.
- extract UCKK6 to a .tar file.
- run odin
- turn on USB debugging on gs2 ( not sure if this was necessary but i did it ) then power down phone.
- connect your turned off phone via usb cable
- hold down volume up and volume down keys until screen comes on
- press volume up to select/enter download mode
- odin status will go from green to yellow
- load .tar into PDA slot
- press start/go/whatever
- phone will reboot. some recovery screen came up and i selected reboot..
then i repeated these steps to flash UCKK6 modem.bin in same PDA slot. not sure if i had to do that or not but I did and I have root and phone works great!
after flashing the UCKK6 system package, do i still need to flash the modem for UCKK6.
i haven't started yet, but right now it reads baseband version i777uckk6
if i need to, where can i find the modem.bin file for UCKK6?

What model do i have and how do I root?

Hi all. I am an American recently stationed in Europe. I got a Galaxy S2 GT-I9100, build number IML74K.BULPC, Baseband- I9100BULP6, running 4.0.3 I got the phone in Germany through Vodafone, using a vodafone sim card. So...... I am new to europe. I had a droid eris that I rooted, a Xoom that I rooted, an iphone that I jailbroke, but...knowing nothing about the German versions of these phones, I don't know how to root this phone.
What version root do i use?
Can i root 4.0.3, I just got the update yesterday when I turned the phone on for the first time?
Is this XXLPH, XXKP8, how do I tell, the Android version only says 4.0.3?
Can I root the phone here in Germany and still be on the German Vodafone network?
I am an American, so I want access to the american app market, and so I want to root.
Please help me root this bad-boy without bricking it or losing my German Vodafone network.
really! so much rooting yet you have no idea where to look for version?
how about looking in settings about or dialing *#1234# if you are stock, which im assuming you are
No matter what version your phone updates to, there will be a rooting process for it, most likely from the one and only Chainfire. Here is his thread to find the rooted kernel when you update your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I think the mostly likely PDA for your phone when you update will be XXLPQ, so find Chainfire's LPQ CF-Root, and follow his guidelines outlined on the first post.
Chris.
*#1234# shows:
PDA:i1900BULP6
Phone: I9100BULP6
CSC: I9100VD2lp8
Build Info: Mon Apr 2 22:11 KST 2012
I am not seeing whether it's XXLPH or XXKP8.
I am new to Europe and don;t want to brick my phone.

chose the CF-root kernel matching to your version BULP6
Kernel to be flashed from ODIN, read ODIN flash guides if you are doing first time (see my sig)
this should work
http://download.chainfire.eu/141/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LP6-v5.2-CWM5.zip
if you get problem or bootloop, use this
http://skywanker.net/download/download.aspx?link=GT-9100/Kernels/Kernel_I9100BULPC.7z
password is: [email protected]
this is your stock kernel.
Actually, it appears you should be using CF-Root-SGS2_BU_VOD_LPC-v5.4-CWM5.zip...
To confirm which one you want, look at your current kernel version. (in About Phone) What does it say?
You can tell which CF-Root kernel to use according to the "Help! Which file do I use ?" section in the CF-Root kernel post.
Ok, thanks for the help all. I downloaded odin and the kernel, but when I try to run Odin it crashes. I open Odin, get the microsoft security warning o you want to, blah blah", click yes, a small box with the word Odin in it and some crazy letters, and then it crashes. Any ideas?

"blah blah" and "small box with the word Odin in it and some crazy letters" is less than helpful.
Screenshots or exact wording of the errors are more helpful if you want someone to be able to diagnose your problem.
I see 3 potential causes of the odin crashes.
1: what version of windows are you running?
2: do you have current drivers for your phone installed on the computer?
3: and what version of odin are you running?

There are no screenshots of the errors, there are no error reports. After the Odin3.ini box opens, I click OK, Odin quickly apperas to flash on in the background, then nothing.....I looks like its trying to run, but crashes. If I had an error report, I would most definetly put it up here.

There is a "print screen" button at the top right of your keyboard, no?
EDIT: Actually, what do you mean by "After the Odin3.ini box opens, I click OK"??? Where did you download Odin from, and what version is it? I don't have an Odin3.ini file anywhere.
Not sure where i got Odin from, but it was a bad download, I deletede it and re-downloaded and now Odin is up and running. So I got Odin, my kernel, and now I should be good to go, I HOPE!
OK, It's late here in Germany and I am about to root this thing, I have ODin open, have my kernel, do i also need a firmware?

If you just want root, then you just need an insecure kernel. If you have a CF-Root kernel, that's all you need. Flashing that kernel will root your phone and install CWM recovery. (Again, make sure you follow the directions in post 1 of the CF-Root thread... specifically make sure you have the correct kernel by reading the "Help! Which file do I use ?" section)
If you have some other kernel, it will depend on the kernel whether or not it will root your phone when you flash it, or if you need to take additional steps.
No, you don't need a firmware, unless you WANT to flash a new one, or a custom one.
I am rooted!!! Thanks everyone!

[Q] Flashing the correct firmware and updating to Jellybean.

Hello. I have an I9300 model (with T-mobile UK). I accidentally broke the phone's software and so I tried to restore to a firmware that I thought was OK for the device which is:
Baseband version: I9300BVLH1
Build number: IMM76D.I9300XXBLG8
But the firmware is buggy. Connecting to Kies doesn't work and the Samsung stock keyboard doesn't allow me to change the settings and the swipe function fails. There are various other issues. It's useable but certainly is not functioning properly.
So what firmware do I need? I found this one by my own research: GT-I9300_BTU_I9300XXALE8_I9300OXAALE8_I9300XXLE8
But that has a modem.bin file. According to heimdall (No windows for me), my phone doesn't want a model.bin file. There is no MODEM partition available for flashing when using heimdall-frontend.
So:
1) What firmware do I need for a correctly functioning Android 4.0.4?
2) Can I upgrade to Jellybean from there?
3) Can I go straight to Jellybean, skipping 4.0.4?
Thank you.

You need to start over with secure and proper tested firmware, so first of all root your phone using this excellent guide (fool prof)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Then dl your chosen JB rom to sd card and flash it from the newly installed recovery (cwm) then your using the built in rom stock kernel and can freely flash the 2 other kernels available for JB at the moment (siyah or Yank555 kernel)
Siyah >http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006459
Yank555>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006459
Then your up to date and running JB 4.1.2 and able to flash other roms etc.
(Dont unzip any files ever...flashing from cwm is zips only, id suggest you to stay of flashing via odin/heimdal as long you arent more experienced)

Thanks for the reply spoonymoon. Is there a Mac version of this toolkit (I can build it from source if necessary)? I'm stuck with using a Mac to flash firmwares. Heimdall is the only way I found I could do it. If there is a Linux tool I might be able to get it to work in a virtual machine.
Also my phone is already rooted and has clockwork recovery. All I need to do is have the correct firmware installed... easier said than done.
Ah, the IMM76D.I9300XXBLG8 firmware I flashed contained a modem.bin file but I didn't flash it since heimdall doesn't allow for that. Is that why the phone is buggy, because heimdall couldn't flash the modem partition? Why can't it flash the modem partition and is there a way in which I can get it to flash the modem?
Should I try flashing GT-I9300_BTU_I9300XXALE8_I9300OXAALE8_I9300XXLE8 without the modem?
