[Q] Disappearing apps - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This morning I noticed the icons on my home screens for 4 apps were showing the default android icon (the one that shows when an app is removed but the shortcut is still there). All 4 apps were also missing from my app drawer.
The 4 apps were
DeskClock Plus
S.O.S.
NYC Subway by Embark
Tivo Mobile
When I went to market.android.com on my laptop and searched for the apps one at a time to reinstall them, all of them showed installed. It did let me reinstall DeskClock+ and S.O.S., and NYC Subway (though the phone said NYC Subway failed to install because "app already exists" and after this it reappeared in my app drawer and I was able to run it). It didn't let me reinstall Tivo Mobile because it says it was already installed, but after I rebooted the phone the app was indeed back there.
I used DeskClock+ yesterday morning at the gym so this must have happened sometime between yesterday morning and this morning.
How do I find out what caused this to happen, and what do I do to prevent it from happening again in the future?
I'm using an HTC Thunderbolts All of my apps are installed to phone memory (I don't install apps to the SD card since there is plenty of internal phone memory). I am rooted (Ginger BreadRock V2.6 2.11.605.5, Android version 2.3.4).
FWIW, I do use MyBackup Pro (by rerware) with root options enabled, and it is setup to auto backup my data every Sunday in the middle of the night. I did notice in the rerware temp folder some folders/files from DeskClock+).
I also have Setting Profiles automatically reboot the phone every morning.

[Q] Android Trojan(s)?

Ok, I've never seen this or had this issue before. So I am not sure what is causing it.
I installed my usual apps after flashing Mr. X's stock+root-CIQ Tmo T989 rom.
First app I usually download and run before anything is Adfree. Then Astro file manager to restore APKs. But I realized that this method left me with some older versions of the apps and they wouldn't have their market links. Yes, I could run Titanium Backup to fix them..
Anyways, suddenly I get a star icon on my notification bar. I look at it and it sends me to a website claiming I won a tablet and to chose.
This is one of the links, don't visit it, I just posted it for reference;
Code:
http://com-user.mobi/galaxy/usa/go.php?t202kw=usipad31&uid=REMOVED
So I decided to wipe and flash again and go through the same process to see if perhaps catch who's the culprit..
It happens again this time with a plus icon..
The star icon has happened twice on different occasions, only in the last week, and after installing a recent update to Adfree.
These are the apps I have installed;
Adfree
Astro
3G Watchdog
AT&T Smart Wi-Fi
Barcode Scanner
Beautiful Widgets
Bloat Freezer Free
GasBuddy
Google Voice
Quick Boot
QuickPic
RealCalc
Root Explorer
ScanLive
ShopSavvy
Speed Test
Tapatalk
Ubuntu Regular TTF
Zillow
Has this happen to anyone? Any idea what's causing this or how to catch / prevent it?
I've had one app actually hijack my my stock browser and change the search engine to some smartsearch type site, like it does to normal windows browsers.. lol
Thanks,
-CC
I've had one
I've had the same one, (it's some kind of advertising). I tracked it to some gosms theme. My suggestion:
1. Wipe (with backup of all the apps)
2. Restore ONE App
3. Reboot. (since the ad appeared everytime i rebooted my phone)
4. Repeat 2 & 3 until you see the ad
5. Uninstall latest restored app or complain to developer.
Hope i helped
AirPush Detector
Ad Detector
AirPush should find the culprit.

games and applications problems

1.I have a Galaxy S3 has been over two months. Bought it in a store in Israel and got VODAFONE company's rom and i still with that rom and I updated to the version added the app flipboard and the option to change the brightness from the notification. I use Samsung's TOUCHWIZ After trying the apex launcher and the nova prime but all have the same problem including in TOUCHWIZ: When I go into applications and games and applications have an issue where files and applications, including all menu takes a long time to recharge. I realized that the problem call redraw could not find a solution. I read the weather widget Samsung's causing the problem and removed it and the problem a little better but still not quite.
Is there something completely solve the problem? My version now is I9300BULG2.
2. When will i get the Jelly bean update? I don't want to change my rom or to do root.
3. When I recharging phone in battery settings I noticed that phone battery charging is via USB. Is this normal?
4.I did updates for some applications in the play store and when I tried to install them I had a message there is not enough storage space available and even though I used 10.86 GB of 11.35 GB and I have a 8GB memory card. What should I do?
5. I downloaded some software from the samsung apps store and after I tried to install there was a message that the installation failed. Is it because I do not have enough space?
Thank you !

[Q] Unfortunately, setting has stopped

Hi all gurus, need your helps.
I have just upgraded to 4.1.1 via Kies, XXDLJ1, on I9300.
Whenever I go to Applications Manager, it will has that error or auto exit.
1. I have tried wipe, it is fine, no more issue.
2. I restored all apps from titanium, it comes back
3. I uninstall apps by batch, it turns ok after some number of apps uninstalled. it is not related to particular apps but apps count matter as i tried install n uninstall a different batch of apps, same observation.
4. It always error or exit after i am in the application manager for a few seconds, it seem failed to get apps size successfully counted.
5. I have about 200 apps
Pls help, very frustrated and i tried google for long time but no obvious solution
any tips please?
Same thing with me on Samsung GT-I9300 with Android 4.1.1
I came across this problem 2 times.
The first time it happened when I installed a game "Waking Mars". The game was working fine, I played for around 20 minutes and then wanted to check free storage left after installing. But when I opened Application manager swiping was very laggy and after a few (5-10) secs it crashed with "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" error or just closed. At that time I didn't know that it was because of "Waking Mars" and started to delete unnecessery applications I installed that day and yesterday, but problem vanished only after uninstalling "Waking Mars". Also, while this app was installed, phone's screen was glitchy and became bleached (the glitch disappeared after rebooting), like when "Natural" screen mode is activated, but it wasn't. When I had tried to install the game again, the problem came back.
The second time it was because of "Galaxy On Fire 2" installed. Same problems appeared: crashing Application manager and glitchy screen.
So I'm pretty sure the problem is because of some exact application, not because of the number of apps installed.
Both games contained their data in ".apk" file, but another Waking Mars version with separate data (cache) caused the same problem too.
By the way, funny thing is that both games are about space
P.S.: Sorry for my English, it isn't my native language.
hi casper1, did you solve the problem? how? same problem here and still persisting, after many many attempts

[Help] Wifi and 3G turning on alone...

Hello there! I have been having a bit of a problem lately. I own a BLU Dash 5.0 simunlocked from factory. It's a double sim model, which I have two sims, since the companies are spanish, let's call them Green Sim and Blue Sim (since that's how they are color coded in my status bar). It is also running Android Jelly Bean 4.2. Here is the problem. Ever since of March 20, a Chinese app appeared on my home screen, I don't know how, something called "Mobile Video" but the content was in a foreign Asian language. I suspect of my friend since I lent it to him for 15 minutes and then it appeared. Aside of this, the wifi and the Green Sim 3G was turned on.
I clicked on the app curious of it was something my friend downloaded from me, but then the app prompted me two options, I didn't know what it said since again, it was Asian. Next, I proceeded to uninstall it, going to my apps list, I was surprised to see another mysterious app, "Push_Down", that was the name. I uninstalled both Mobile Video and Push_Down. I thought I fixed the problem. Wrong.
Next day when I woke up, I found two new apps on my homescreen, and again, the Wifi and Green Sim 3G was on.These were Chinese also. I uninstalled them both and found once again "Push_Down" in my apps. After I uninstalled them, I thought the problem was finally fixed. Wrong again. Since this event, about every 2 or 3 hours, my Wifi and Green Sim 3G turn on automatically, but haven't downloaded anything new, one, because I have no credit left, and two, I have no internet at home. Ever since, daily I wake up, the same problem, the Wifi and 3G are on. I checked my SD Card, I checked my Phone Storage, both with 2 Antivirus (Avast!, and Lookout Mobile) and with Addons Detector. Surprisingly, nothing has appeared.
My last option is what hurts me most, to reset my phone, which I don't want to do since I have lots of apps installed, progress made with certain games and etc, etc. Also, I am not a root user, so I haven't rooted and won't root my phone.
Now, can anyone please help me? I am very annoyed at this happening everyday!
same problem...cheinese apps keep reinstalling
I too have had this problem for a few weeks now. Got a Chinese smartphone for Christmas (ok i know thats the first mistake, but it was worth a try for the money). mfaction royale mp720 (mpie comes up on the startup screen). Anyway i realised there where a few Chinese apps that came with it (pinyin and a app with a orange icon with a squirrel logo on it) so i unistalled these without problem. One chinese app i couldn't uninstall so i disabled it in the app settings
Everything had been working fine without problem and had been very happy with the phone until a week or so ago. started getting the apps described above installing. These include 'push_down' 'push_collect' 'filegogo' 'mobile video' and some others with chinese writing on them. I also get my phone setting itself to mute when these apps reappear. Keep uninstalling them but they keep coming back. Have tried AVG and Antimalware but they only flag things up as they install themselves, not the thing thats doing the installing. I thought that google account might be a problem so changed password and reset my phone to factory default. As a test i didn't connect back to google account. No joy. Although some apps have not reappeared some have and this morning a new one so i don't think its google account.
I did read some Chinese phones can have the malware embedded into the firmware but it's been fine for months. Perhaps there is a delay so your not likely to send the phone back then the malware begins. If this is the case then the only way round would be to root the phone then find the app or apps that are doing this. Not sure if it's easy to root one of these phones.
Anyone else had these symptoms after a full factory reset?. Anyone been able to sort it out? Anyone know of a guide to root his phone?
Hmmmmm....

Actually, as much as my experience from rooting, I haven't done it once again after a bad event I had, like almost bricking an old phone I had which for my good luck there was a way to restore it Ever since, I won't root anymore unless there exists a ROM backup by the manufacturer. But still, I don't know what's causing this. My phone has been fine since stock, I have more than 2 months with it! The problem started since last Thursday, which is why I suspect it's an app I downloaded or ad I clicked on. Any ideas?
(Also, thanks for your reply )

[Q] Problem with app. Why did restoring backup work when nothing else did?

Hi,
I had a weird problem with an app (The Times and The Sunday Times) on my Xperia Z2 Tablet yesterday. Although I managed to fix it eventually, I was wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on what happened.
The tablet had been repaired under warranty. Before I sent it off, I did a full Titanium backup, unrooted, and reset to factory defaults. As part of the repair, Sony updated the firmware from 17.1.1.A.0.402 to 17.1.2.A.0.314 (17.1.2.A.0.314 was released whilst it was out for repair). Both firmwares are based on Android 4.4.2.
I reinstalled all my user apps (not system apps) by restoring a Titanium backup, after which the The Times and The Sunday Times app was working. I used it several times, then yesterday it froze when loading. Killing the app from the recents and opening it again didn't work; this time it wouldn't load (the icon on the Nova Launcher desktop glowed for a few seconds, then nothing happened).
I then tried the following, killing the app from the recents menu before each attempt:
Clearing the app's cache.
Clearing the app's data.
Uninstalling the app and reinstalling.
Uninstalling the app, searching the entire device for the app name using solid explorer (rooted), removing any left over files, and reinstalling the app.
Uninstalling the app, running SD maid, and reinstalling the app.
Rebooting the device.
Still no luck. each time, the app icon would glow when i tapped it, the app would appear in my recent apps list as a black rectangle, but no matter how long I left it (several hours at one point), it just wouldn't load.
In desperation, I restored the app's Titanium backup with data, and it (sort of) worked. The app loaded, and allowed me to log in again (as if I'd just done a fresh install, or restored the app without data).
The weird thing is that the app has not been updated since I made the backup, so the backup version is the same as the version on the Play Store.
Does anyone know why restoring the Titanium backup would work where the troubleshooting steps I took above didn't? Is it possible that the app's data got given some weird permissions at some point that only Titanium, running as root, could sort out?
Thank you in advance!
Looking at the logcat might offer some insights into why it was not launching.
An educated guess would be that TiBu restored/overwrote a file that the other apps/system did not find and wipe and the app itself corrupts a file when launching and only restoring a working one from your backup fixed it.
If you find out what file that is, SD Maid could be updated to cover that and if it's reproduceable, you could also write the dev of the app instruction how to reproduce the issue so he can fix it.
Of course there is always the option that the server/connection was bad and it hang because of that.
