I know the note is very new and I see there are 2 roms out there already! I'm new to att. Coming from sprint and evo..my question is how much dev support will this have? I've never heard of Odin will I have to use it instead of a custom recovery? Will I be able to just root and use cwm or twrp to flash roms themes etc..? I have 30 days to test phone. While I do love it I worry about dev support. Thinking if we will get aosp or miui love? Anyone have any inside news?

Off the cuff? I'd say a bit note than the average Samsung phone, seeing as how it's so awesome. Might take a bit though, Sammy isn't as nice as HTC when it comes to unlocking bootloaders.

Odin is always your fail-safe and safest was to flash...it's really not that hard...
BUT there already is a CWM Beta recovery that works great for the Note. So you will be able to flash everything the way you did on your evo

Actually Samsung doesn't lock their bootloaders. HTC or Verizon does. And yes you will be able to use CWM to flash. There is also been talk that AOKP group is building us a ROM.

This phone will have killer Dev support.

I'm going to go with as much dev support as the Skyrocket. And as much AOSP as the Skyrocket as well. At least for a while.

Let me get out my crystal ball.
I agree that there will be very good dev support. We already have two very excellent devs that have released ROMs and several others working on roots and other tools.
As stated, the CWM beta 3 recovery is getting great reviews.
I say keep the phone but it's your call.

Find my guide in the general section and look up section5
You do not need to root to install Miui.
There are reasons to root a stock rom, but there seems to be a general misconception on why you root, and when to root.

This!!! I missed the miui part....yea no need to root if your flashing a custom rom!!!
I think a lot of people are used to other phones like HTC and Motorola where you have to be rooted to flash roms. I thought it was weird too when I first got the fascinate coming from those other brands. I like that Samsung leaves the security essentially wide open on their devices.
Yeah I have a evo 3d running miui and my buddy wants it. What's the way you guys recommend

lol wow i had no idea that you did not have to be rooted, like the above guy said im a HTC guy and its just the way im used to doing things.
My buddy is jumping up and down right now like a little douche nozzle.
If he still wants to root, SuperOneClick is the easiest. Just make sure usb debugging is on.
Just Odin cwm4 fixed for cm7. Then flash miui in cwm. Su is preinstalled on miui.

IMO, just wait and stay on GB with root. One thing I miss is stability and more RAM.

flash unofficial best there is...hands down!
Have you ever rooted before? Installed an alternate recovery like CWM? Flashed a ROM? Created a nandroid backup? Cleared caches? Formatted system or data? Used ADB? Used Titanium backup? Run non-stock launchers? Modified system files such as build.prop?
If not, search for everything I just listed, and start reading. None of it is really hard to do, but having a basic understanding of each of those moving pieces is going to be key to running a stable custom ROM.
Most custom roms have install instructions in the OP. If the basic steps there confuse you, then please don't rush anything and START READING!
Good luck!

you can only install roms that are built for your specific device. Trying to install roms meant for other phones will likely break (aka "brick" ) your phone. So no, you cannot install the Galaxy Nexus ROMs on your Note
Luckily, our Note currently has several ICS options to pick from.
First, read up on how to install and use Clockworkmod Recovery (aka "CWM" ). Once again, only install the version that is mean for our i717 AT&T Note.
Then, as I said before, I recommend "The Unofficial v2.0 Beta4" as a stable first ICS rom. Go to its thread and start studying...

So I got s-off last night and since then I've flashed like three or four different ROMS. Every single one I try, my phone will boot and then reboot for no apparent reason. I can be in a menu or get an email or text message when it happens and I can't figure out why it's doing this. Anybody have any ideas?

Will do, thanks. I wish HTC, Motorola and Samsung phones were as easy to flash and install ROMS, kernels, etc. as Nexus devices are.
That's because the nexus bootloader is not locked I believe the gs3 has a locked bootloader though.

Nexus devices are made by HTC and Samsung so there's a little conflict there
I believe that if you are going to root/unlock... ect then you should be required to learn the phone, yes nexus devices are easy to root and flash custom roms but this makes it easier for issues to arise in the long run. Learning basic adb commands and fastboot can be a life saver.
Plus Nexus devices can be boring, i love options and AOSP can only be changed so much. Every rom will have similarities
When you have a HTC phone with sense you typically get MIUI, AOSP, and future sense roms/ports.and this is a crackflashers dream
The Rezound being one of the oddballs due to ril issues. once this is figured out for this phone and future phones then i believe HTC should be the way everyone goes

Hi guys, I am very new to the Note 2. I just unlocked and rooted the latest ota using Casual. Thanks to Adam Outler and everyone else involved. So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

Best place to start is finding out what build you're on as options are limited to some degree depending upon that. I'm assuming you're going to be on one of the newer ones. Lemme know and we'll go from there bud.

Unfortunately, I am on the newest build that came out. I had no idea that the bootloaders were locked until after I updated. I actually came from the S3 so I pretty much know the tools that I need and things like that but I have never ever heard of Loki before, all I know is its some type of makeshift work around for the bootloader.

You will not be able to install a custom recovery on your device, as any build past MDK (the original build) has pretty much been locked down. Only MDK people have the ability to use Loki.
Your only alternative is Safestrap, basically you can only flash ROMs that use the stock kernel...which means no AOSP. There's a thread for it here somewhere.

Damn that's dissapointing to say the least. I really loved AOSP on my S3 and I really hear that its pretty great on on the S4. Oh well, I will just enjoy 4.3 until 4.4 comes later this month, or year due to Verizon's AMAZING speed when it comes to updates. -_-
