[Q] root results in no wifi - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

hello i am having a problem here. i don't know what is going on but every time i root the phone using entropy's way i loose wifi access (sorry for such noob question) i tried searching and i can't figure this out ??? do i NEED to have a custom rom for wifi to work ??
details:
galaxy s2 uckk7 (updated modem to uckk6)
siyah-v2.6.12 kernel <--- this is when i loose wifi. after flashing this kernel with mobile odin

Wipe data.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk

What Android software version did you root from??

You are obviously not doing it "my way" since you're flashing SiyahKernel.
You also clearly haven't read any of the instructions - if you used my prerooted system packages, they clearly state:
Note that after flashing this, you might need to wipe data depending on what ROM you were coming from. If you bootloop or things behave wacky, enter 3e recovery (stock kernel means stock recovery) and do a Wipe Data/Factory Reset. If you are reverting from UCKK6 back to UCKH7 you MUST perform this step or wifi will not work.

OP, totally out of topic but can you please verify that version again?
Is it really ucKK7? or ucKH7?

Well you are right, I did use a different custom kernel. I've been playing around with rbis core a while and have to say "your way" works flawlessly. sorry but my n00bness in the subject of Android mods/rooting is GreaT.
P.S. @ Entropy512 you are awesome O

Just asking for the verification, m8.
There is no need to get itch.
Reason: back then, there was a member kept reporting said his phone was UCKK7 and most of us if not all claimed it should be UCKH7 and thing fired up.
Now, I've seen you post UCKK7 so I just asked to verify if it is true or not.
That's all.

CM9 Alpha [LINK/INSTRUCTIONS] [NOT NOOB FRIENDLY]

This is just a link to CM9 over in the OG GS2 Developer forums:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400
THIS IS NOT NOOB FRIENDLY
IF YOU HAVE TO ASK, YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE DOING THIS.
MAKE A BACKUP THROUGH CWM
Download the ODIN files from the linked thread
Copy Google Apps and Face Unlock zips to SD Card
Reboot into Download mode
Flash the ODIN files (warning::: this flashes a ICS bootloader) -- Edit, try without flashing bootloader first. It's safer.
Reboot into Recovery
Flash Gapps and Face Unlock zips
Do a factory reset (yes, AFTER installing everything)
Reboot
Set up your phone
Reboot again
PLAY AROUND FOR A WHILE
Restore backup to go back to whatever you were using before
If something confuses you, this probably isn't for you and you should wait for a i777 version of the ROM to be availible (it won't take long, please wait and save all of us from DIS ROM BRICK MAH FONE threads).
Things that don't work:
Everything listed on the CM9 Alpha page +
Home Button = Back Button & Back+Search buttons do not work
Phone does not work (and flashing the RIL in the CM9 thread will not fix this == it's a kernel problem)
This isn't my work, I'm linking and providing instructions on how to flash an ALPHA ROM. The phone DOES NOT work!
I'm not affiliated in anyway with Team Hacksung or Cyanogen.
You don't have to flash the ODIN files, just use the CWM zip he provided.

You must have already had an i9100 bootloader.. the install script he provides with his cwm release specifically looks for the model number.. flashing i777 roms don't so you may not have noticed up until mnow.
Just remove the first two lines in the script and it won't check.
edit: I've always been very careful and have never flashed any bootloaders on this phone. Just to clarify I didn't have to edit the script on this one though, but i have on others in the past.

Sorry should have explained better, i was running an i9100 port at the time. That's why i didn't need to edit the build.prop. And to answer your question just remove the first two lines, you'll see once you get it up in notepad.
Pretty cool, seems to be running on my phone, cetainly just something to play with, not really too functional overall as far as any kind of Daily. Thanks for the link.

There were changes to the bootloader from froyo to gingerbread on the i9000 that the rom depends on, so one can assume there to be similar bootloader changes. It's probably best to wait for Atin to give us some proper information and/or a build for the i777 after the holidays.

All on phone modding? (Root/roms/etc.)

Is there a way to currently root your sgs2 all from your phone? (Without a PC)
For example; Rooting +CWM>install kernel+ new rom/baseband
phone for starting base kk6/2.3.6
Just wondering. I wanted to make a powerpoint about how to root android phones, but I think each phone is so specific that a general method may not be applicable?
Also that most phones need to be flashed via PC for starters? (yes/no?)
I figured generally speaking:
1: Look for your phones model number, android version and baseband,
2: download and flash correct rom (renaming the file if necesary)
3: with phone rooted install ??? (rom/kernel/new bb/cwm or whatever)
I don't know if I can do this as a "general" powerpoint for android, but I can do it specifically for SGS2; however, not everyone has an SGS2
ideas?
uh download rom manager to install cmw and just flash a rooted rom ?

I'm 99% sure that cmw needs a rooted phone to even install from rom manager but then again it actually might not ..

Please read the OP. How is rom manager working with ICS relevant to this if he's starting from KK6 GB?
Maybe mobile Odin can work but idk if you can use that without root already on the phone. I had to root mind from download mode using a pc with Odin.
Seems like a cool idea to explore.

Mobile Odin requires root.
AFAIK there's no current way to root an SGS2 without a PC. I found SuperOneClick to work just fine, doesn't require you to flash using Odin, but it does take some patience and a few tries, and a PC of course.
I could be wrong of course, please correct me if I am.
I read you can run android sdk/adb from usb stick. Just need the "final" folders installed. Any tips?
There's a method to root + install new kernel from adb cmds

I never do backups unless fresh power off then booting recovery , no rom manager ..
i just was suggesting possibly with it installed cwm can install without a pc.
the only caveat was if root access required to install it as I don't remember and can't think of any way rooting is possible without a pc EXCEPT installing a pre-rooted rom
*which is not possible on sgs2 with standard sammy recovery correct

uhhhh....
COMPLETELY different phones, COMPLETELY different hardware. NO....you cannot use rom manager for the i777 unless you are working solely with AOSP builds....in which case you would ALREADY have a CWM kernel
this has been the case on all samsung galaxy s line except the skyrocket/t989. there is no doubt that it simply DOESNT work from stock. its not speculation, its fact.
things are different over here dude. the i777 is pretty much nothing like the i727 aside from sharing a name and touchwiz....

SGH-i777 wrong kernel

Hi there
-I'm on AT&T using a SGH-i777
Right now, the Android version is 2.3.4
Kernel Version is 2.6.35.7
Not sure if all of that stuff is relevant, but hopefully it helps.
I'm very new to flashing, rooting, and all that good stuff in general, but today I attempted to follow a guide in attempt to put CWM on my phone, and then I would use CWM to flash Cyanogenmod 9 on it next. Being the complete noob that I am, I only realized too late that the Kernel provided in the guide was for the GT-i9100, and not the SGH-i777. Right now, the phone will boot up into Android, but displays the GT-i9100 and a yellow warning sign at the boot loader before launching into android. So far, I've not noticed any adverse side effects due to mis-flash, other than it being, you know, the wrong kernel. I've rebooted into CWM, and so far I believe that works, but I'm honestly not sure where to go from here.
The guide I followed was: *Can't post links as this is my first post, but it was on the cyanogenmod wiki, titled as, "Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T): Full Update Guide"*
The kernel I installed was named: "codeworkx's Kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.3"
So essentially what I'm wondering here, is where should I go from here? I was thinking I could flash a new kernel on my phone, but I think I only got lucky here and didn't brick it, so I'm hesitant to follow random guides I get from Googling without someone with experience thumbs-upping it for me. I'd still like to put Cyanogen on my phone, as the official ROM(Right terminology?) that was pushed from AT&T sucks and lags while opening messaging and the like, and unless anyone would be willing to recommend another, better ROM, then I'll probably go with it once I get this worked out.
Thanks in advanced

yes your lucky u didnt brick as far as i know that would usually do the trick....the only thing i can think of is starting from scratch. go into the development forums for our phone and there is a simple process to restore to stock and start over but someone here might know a little more but thats what i would do honestly
What makes you think it was a GT-I9100 kernel? From the name, I'm pretty sure what you flashed is the codeworkx CWM kernel for the I777. The boot screen that says GT-I9100 and has the yellow warning triangle would appear any time you flash a custom kernel using Odin or Heimdall. If you had installed a kernel which is actually for the I9100, you would not be able to use all of your capacitive buttons. You should be able to flash the firmware of your choice using recovery from your current setup.
Oh man, do I feel dumb or what?
Thanks for the quick help, I really wasn't lying when I said I was a noob at this!

[Q] Rooting SGH-i777 that has stock ICS installed

Alright, I'm a noob...(loved the intro video!) and I've spent an hour or so searching for rooting info for my device. Did find a good thread that was over a year old about rooting SGH-i777 with older android versions, but was afraid to follow THOSE directions since mine has newer version (Android 4.0.4). And I find other threads about rooting other versions of GS2...not the AT&T.
So far I've learned NOT to use ROM Manager, and not to look to Galaxy2Root for help...so I guess there's that. I don't want to be stupid here, but can someone direct me to a thread with Rooting instructions for my phone with ICS already on it, and recommended ROMs. I'd like to have more control over my phone and take advantage of JB releases that seem to be out with good reliability. I'm used to doing this sort of thing on computers, but not with Android. Had my phone for about 15 mos....my first Android.
Suggestions?
TIA...

This is so far easiest thing to do, however be careful, DO NOT, DO NOT,
choose the "one click" patch option which come first, as that will patch
the system and you will NOT be able to root again. and there is NO way
to un-patch. I was not being careful and now trapped.

Appreciate the suggesting. Been researching ExynosAbuse, and looks like it could cause camera not to work, and in the compatibility list, though the Galaxy Sii 9100 is listed, the SGH-i777 is not...seems like a concern to me.

It works trust me. Also you're going to flash a rom right after so you should be fine

I am also a noob when it comes to anything mobile. I got my GS2 last year (first android as well), and I've since updated to 4.0.4. I have also done some research on rooting(after my fiance keeps bugging me about "fixing" our gs2s due to them always turning off) but I was uncertain on what rom to use. I have no experience with phones, and I don't want to do something stupid and break our phones. I know that I am supposed to " use exynos abuse", but that's pretty much all I know/can find without reading every page on the 80 page threads. Are there any suggestions on a stable(ish) rom for us both to use/how easy is it to "use exynos abuse"? (without doing what tyhust did) We are fine with our ICS and I wont venture into the world of Jellybean yet... (maybe once I acquire some more experience)
Thanks in advance, and for the site in general, there is a TON of information on here...

I'm also a noob... so if I want to down grade to 4.0.3 rooted from 4.0.4 stock, should I use ucle5_stock_rooted.tar with Odin?
Is is necessary to wipe since both are ICS?
Thanks!

Yes, that should be the tar you use. Make sure it's from this thread. You should be okay without wiping, but if you have problems, I'd suggest flashing 2.3.4 and wiping from recovery once on 2.3.4; reason being, stock ICS kernel may brick your phone if you wipe with it (see linked thread for details on this eMMC superbrick bug).
OP, if you're uncertain about ExynosAbuse, try this method instead. I know it works, I used it myself very recently, albeit I was already on 4.0.3 and had not upgraded.

This is a good thread.
I had the same issues with 4.0.4 and i found it was a live wallpaper app (water drops) causing my random "power off". Since switching to a different live wall paper, i have had NO random "shut downs".
I still want to root my S2 and this is the best thread i have found that addresses the stock 4.0.4
good luck.
Well, after a week of no shut downs, my phone just shut off. So i guess the live wallpaper was not the issue.

Not to hijack the thread or anything but I'm new to this phone too. I understand the rooting process on ICS what I don't understand is installing a custom recovery and kernel. Why do you have to use a gingerbread kernel and why can you not just use stock? I've always just rooted, installed custom recovery and flashed roms on Verizon phones so installing a custom kernel to achieve custom recovery is foreign to me. I've been reading the stickies but I don't understand this....is it only to avoid the flash counter being tripped? Is there a easier way to install the recovery or am I making this harder than it needs to be? Thanks for any help!

Our phone has recovery baked into the kernel. For what reason I don't know but I'm sure its a good one as just flashing recovery is IMO easier.
Thanks. Last question. After installing a gingerbread kernel and the baked in recovery do I need to install a new kernel to flash a jb or ics rom. Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks for your help.

Well since every ROM comes with a kernel in it (obviously or it couldn't run) then you just answered your own question bro. Flash away.

Need more help.... There's so much information since this phone came out its overwhelming and it seems most of it was written for gingerbread. I have the phone rooted, mobile Odin lite installed and I'm confused on which kernel I need to flash. Phone is stock rooted lk3 4.0.4. Thank you!

If you're just trying to get into recovery to flash something then any kernel will do. Since the system won't need to boot up with that kernel installed you're just flashing one to enter recovery.

So I want to install a gb kernel and recovery only so I can flash a custom rom that comes with kernel and recovery, correct? So before flashing the gb kernel in mobile Odin I should have a rom already downloaded on the sd card so I can immediately flash that? I'm sorry for all the questions this is drastically different from what I'm used to.

Download whatever ROM you want on your phone . Flash a kernel. Reboot into recovery. Profit.

[Q] Stuck on Bootlogo

Hi there,
today i installed the newest JellyBAM Mod. After restarting from Recovery to normalboot, the bootlogo stucked. ( http://www.android-hilfe.de/attachm...tlogo-kernel-logo-aendern-galaxy-s2-stock.jpg )
I waited ~10 minutes but nothing happened. I tried wiping cache, dalvik cache and factory reset but nothing works. That means i can go into recovery mode and also into download mode.
What can I do? I dont nesserly need to have it rooted right away, i guess i need to flash something with odin?
A stuck firmware would be cool, i allready found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650919
But I'm not sure which one exactly i need to use. Im from Germany and I have a GT-I9100 unbranded..
I looked at SAMmobile but im not sure if i need the Germany - MBC or the Germany - DBT ?? What is the difference?
Please help me, i guess i accedently deleted some backups i made earlier (3-4 months ago?), because I dont have them anymore on my SD Card.
Do you have the JellyBam ROM zip on your SD card?try dirty flashing.

I can get any file on my S2 since i can connect my SD card to my PC.
Maybe i accidently downloaded the wrong ROM but i really don't think so. I try it now, atm downloading the newest jellybam update on my PC.
E: Won't work. I found some older Files when 4.1.2 was first leaked, Can i just use these files via Odin once again? Or will it not work because it's then older Jellybean?
Not the ROM.The mod you installed. Its happened to me a couple of times. All I did was flash the rom without any mods .It'll boot.

Nothing like that.It should work via Odin.

Woops, i wrote something wrong. I dont meant JellyBAM Mod, I mean rom. My bad! Still, Can i simply try it with odin?
So,you installed jellybam ROM?and it wouldn't go past the bootlogo ?
Yes flashing stock rom via Odin should work. You'll have to flash a compatible kernel again.

Right.
And because I'm not sure what the "compatible kernel" or the stock kernel is, my plan was to use 4.1.2 leaked version that worked beginning of the year (or even further behind) for me fine. This has a kernel etc. on board, that should work again right??
Have you wiped data? Flashing a ROM without wiping data will make your phone end up like that. If you don't want to lose any data then back it up with Titanium Backup. I frequently play with ROMs and thats what I do.
Personal experience.

Yes it should work. But if i remember correctly, the leaked versions weren't stable and had a lot of bugs.To be on the safer side, download the latest version from www.sammobile.com for your country and phone model/carrier.

For me the leaked version worked fairly well and since i know it worked these days ago, im pretty sure I want to use this one.
If not, I don't know the difference between Germany - MBC and Germany - DBT + I don't know if the kernel works etc.

MBC and DBT are just different firmware versions. As long as they are for your phone, carrier and country, they should work. All of them have same stock kernel.Since yours is an unbranded from germeny, either of MBC or DBT should work fine.
By compatible kernel,i meant for rooting purposes.
