Hi!
Just got a Transformer Prime from Bestbuy! It is amazing. Only problem, two dead pixels about an inch apart at the middle of the screen! Wifi is fine, given that it is a known issue. And GPS is mostly non existent but I have a phone for it, and I hardly use it.
I talked to my friends at the Droid X2 forums and I feel that I can live with it! I may get a worse one next if I return it, if I get one that is. Best buy is out of stock and Amazon won't ship one till March 21st... Besides unless the screen is totally dark and at full brightness I can not notice it. I've been playing with it and even at auto brightness with a totally dark screen I can't notice it.
I'll test it for a week and see if I can live with it, else returning it. But I mostly feel I'll keep it. I love the Prime and I don't wanna go for Samsung tab 10.1 or anything else.
What do you guys say?
Anyway, hello to you all!!!
Personally i'd swap it, hate to be debbie downer but it could cause more problems down the road.
new is new and should not have anything wrong with it. I'll be the one to mess up my product, thank you very much.
I'd return it.
Agreed! welcome, but i too would return on the dead pixel premise. You have lasted this long without a prime, wait for a good one.
glad to hear you like your device. but swap it St best buy for another with no dead pixels. cuz once your return period up from best buy, Asus won't fix or replace device for only 2 dead pixels. specifically stated in warranty card of prime about details surrounding minimum amount of dead pixels required to qualify for warranty. n its alot and have to be in one place.
but if those pixels not really bothering you, then keep it. there's some apps on the market to supposedly fix pixel issues or screen issues. decision is yours. I'd swap it. but if you don't and satisfied, that's all that matters.

I'd like to swap it ideally, but I won't get a prime anytime soon again then. Bestbuy has no more of them in stock and so is the case with Amazon. I need to wait a few weeks to get from Amazon and I dunno about Bestbuy. Then again, what is the guarantee that the next one won't have dead pixels, right?
A friend of mine said he got a Xoom a year back and it had a dead pixel from day one, like mine. But he loved the Honeycomb OS so much he didn't care to return it and he never bothers about (or even remembers) about the dead pixel anymore! I asked and he says it is fine and it is not like the dead pixel starts to spread and cause more pixels to die. If you have a dead pixel at day one and take care of your device, you'll only have the same dead pixel after 1 year too. So, I don't think this will eventually ruin my device. In fact, my Droid X2 phone has a dead pixel and I never bothered at all and the screen is fine.
Anyway, what do you say? Can it cause more dead pixels later? And what are the chances I have other problems with a replacement Prime, if I return it?
I have never heard of dead pixes potentially causing more dead pixels down the road. If anything I have heard that dead pixels can actually go away over time.
Personally I would keep it until the return period is about to expire and then decide if it is something you can't live with. BestBuy may have one in by then or might be able to order an exchange unit for you. Although I have been hearing people say that BestBuy is pulling the prime off shelves because of a high return rate. So keep that in mind if you do return it; it may be a while before you are able to find another one. And the replacement may be worse or even have other problems.

Order from Amazon, they ship a lot quicker than the estimated date lately. Order my Champaign 2/26 with estimated shipping between 3/17 and 3/23, it actully shipped 3/1.
if you satisfied with it, then I'd say keep it. anything goes wrong down the road, you can always use your 1yr. warranty on it.

Has anybody experienced a dead pixel on their Sony Tablet S?
I have 1, not a big deal, but when you spend £400 on a device, you become very aware of it and you do not expect it to happen after a few days of buying it.
Im just seeing if anybody else is in the same boat, and if so, what they did about it?
Haven't exclusively looked, but I normally notice that sort of thing
I'd take it back, it's a genuine manufacturing defect. If they give you some BS about repairing just say you want a straight refund then buy another one, that's what happened with my Dell Streak.

Thanks for the advice. I was going to pop to the store tonight and see what they say, but I know some stores can be a bit funny about things like that.
Aren't a certain amount of dead pixels considered ok though?

Not when you spend a large sum of money on a tablet it isnt.
Anyway, managed to swap it it this evening thanks
Had that issue too....exchanged it for a new one..so far so good..weird thing was though, before I returned the one with the dead pixel, I did a factory restore to wipe all my info. After that the pixel was fine lol Still, didnt want to take the chance and just exchanged it.
Did you tell them you had issues with pixels or did you make something up to exchange it?
I told them it was a pixel issue...The guy turned it on, and like I said, it didn't show up because of the factory reset. I told the guy that I didnt want to take a chance and they gave me a new one.
No dead pixels here and havent seen any on a device in a few years. This is 2011. It shouldnt happen.

had 1 stuck pixel. went away after a couple taps. don't like that I had to do it but at least it's gone
Hi,
Im new to this forum but I thought I would get everybodys opinion. Im on my 3rd Prime and by far the best sample out of 3 that I have had. My return window closes on Wednesday. My first two were unacceptable with several dead pixels and light bleed. This 3rd one has almost no light bleed, no dead pixels, and works great besides the software hiccups with all of them. But my almost the whole bottom half maybe a 3rd of the way up has a slight yellow tinge to it. Its not noticable unless you are really comparing top to bottom but once you do notice its apparent. Does anybody know if this is a adhesive drying issue? If not should I deal with it and keep or save my $500 for something better down the road?
It really up to you, can you live with it? Or is it one of those things that since youve noticed it, its the only thing you see? And how confident and patient are you with the software hiccups?
For me I went throught 3 primes... actually almost 4 but I canceled the last shipment to get my money back. I didnt want to kick myself in the ass if I settled for a tablet with so many issues. I really expected to buy a tablet that I dont have to worry about. The TF201 looked very good on the prerelease, but when made available to the public it had so many ranges in performance (The good, the bad, and the ugly). You may have a decent working tablet but with the firmware upgrades you dont know if its gonna help or do nothing or even make it worse. Then we have 2 other primes coming out (TF300 and TF700) and probably other brands with comparable specs. I chose to saving my 500 for something I can be satisfied with. I tasted the TF201 and I think I can wait for to spend my money on a diff. tablet.
I'd say go for another exchange. I wouldn't accept a yellow tint to bottom half of screen. Even if everything else works fine. By the way, what's the first 3 numbers of the serial? To see if this is from the newer batch or older ones. They are good ones out there, like mines which I got way back 12/22 from an early batch.
I kind of feel the same why. I love the thing but we have an iPad 2 i can't help but to compare it to. I'm an android guy and my wife is Apple but in the tablet case android is looking to be a hard sell. What do you think about the gaming? That's my biggest worry, i feel like the next gen tegras will be out before they come out with more than a handful of games.
I have a bco serial number. This is the third one and it was from a fresh shipment on Jan 30th to best buy. Also the only bad thing about an exchange is once again they are out of stock everywhere and if i got one that was in the last bit inferior to the one I have I think that would be the last straw for me.
We have an ipad2 that my 2 yr old daughter uses. I think the tegra 3 is great for the gaming aspect, I gonna stick with android but I am gonna wait till other tegra 3 tablets come out with less problems.
Keep trying. It took me 4 tries and finally found one with ZERO issues. Your more then likely to get the newest batch now. Received mine 2 days ago. imo its worth it. It's a hassle but thats what we get for being early adopters.

You don't think any of the future tablets would be worth waiting a couple of months
Just wait.. you have the ipad2 to keep you occupied for the meantime.
Well the only bad thing is my wife hogs the iPad and I've gotten used to having my own tablet lol
Hey mxracer327, can you tell me if your gps works? I have a bco serial number too. My wifi seems to be on par with my phone (motorola atrix) however my gps gets 0 satalites inside (havnt tested outside however my phone gets about 5-6 from the same area of the house.
Return it. Whatever returns the original place you bought it from receives they ship it back to Asus as defective. We can't just sit back and accept the imperfections they've been sending these tf201's out with. Send Asus a message that they really need to up their quality control if they are going to keep us as consumers!
Lhoki i tried gps indoors or doesn't seem to pick up any sattelites but i do nothave a need for a gps on my tablet but that doesn't mean it still shouldn't work. Caaz, im thinking I will probably return it and give up on the prime
i feel the same mxracer, i have no use for gps but yeah it should still work as iv paid full price for a product, its not that id ever use gps, and if i did id just use my phone instead, its more the principal
Ok, so I bought my Prime on 2/27 from Best Buy. I was very lucky because you can't find these things anywhere where I live and they seem to be sold out online in a lot of places as well. I got even more lucky because it was the only one in stock and was an open box item, so I got it for $50 bucks less.
Issues:
Of course the WiFi seems pretty crap weak, but it works good enough in my house.
I have 1 dead pixel, not really noticeable but still bugs me because I know its there.
Slight bit of screen bleed, but this might be impossible to get away from...
I have until Monday (14 days) to decide if I want to return it or not. I really do like it a lot. I am just questioning whether the Tegra 3 will be strong enough for the long haul and if there will be a fix for the WiFi anytime soon.
What would you do? Hold onto it, because it is a pretty great tablet? Or return it and hold out for a little bit for something better around the corner?
Thanks!

Yeah good point. I am just wondering if I bought at the point that the price might drop in a few weeks anyway because something better is coming.
Also, since the screen has just ONE bad pixel, I can't imagine that in the future, if I send it in for a WiFi fix that they would do anything about the screen would they?
mine has 6 bright pixels
the pixels developed lately, and would not go away with pixel fixer either. i am past return date now.
u should try pixel fixer though, to see if it works for u

In my experience with several primes that the wifi thing is not on all of them. I've had a unit with a weaker wifi than another. My current one is good. I've also seen some with semi working gps (still doesnt work when driving). Also seen some with different variation in screen (warmer vs cooler). Also seen some with more light bleed than others. So if you really like the prime I'd say return it and get another one if you can find one somewhere else.

Yeah my WiFi definitely doesn't seem as bad as some people are complaining about. And my GPS can actually give my location when I am inside the house, so that is good too. I honestly don't care about the GPS. I will never need it for Navigation or anything, my phone does that just fine. I am mostly concerned about the WiFi (which apparently isn't that bad) and the screen. It seems like Asus has some pretty excellent support after reading some of Gary Key's posts, they should have a WiFi fix in soon and if I voice my concern I am sure that they will help me out. I am really leaning towards keeping it now...

I would not expect the prime to drop price anytime in 2012 personally. Asus has already divulged their pricing scheme for the tf300 and infinity and the prime has its correct spot right in the middle. Current prices will hold through holiday 2012 mark my words.
If you like it keep it, if not return and wait for the next thing. There will always be something better coming with tech products. Only way to enjoy them is to choose what you want and jump in on that device and enjoy it unethical until it can no longer do what you obtained it for.
Personally I love my prime and nothing I see coming in 2012 entices me enough to even entertain the thought of selling or replacing it. I am confident it will be more than enough for me for at least a full year and probably 2.

With regard to dead pixels, I dunno why it bugs the hell outta some people. Mine has 2 bright pixels at the middle of the screen. But unless the screen is totally dark and the brightness is set to maximum, you cannot see them. In auto brightness mode, you can't see them at all, even on a black screen. Unless you are anal about this or use your prime at a distance of 1 centimeter, it shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps my bright pixel is not as bright as others. I dunno.
As far as WiFi is concerned, I don't care. Yes, speed tests reveal that my WiFi is slower than my phone's or laptop's. But I can download any file just as fast as on my phone/laptop. It is because not all sites offer you blazing fast download speeds. I can download stuff at a steady 1-1.3 MBps speed. Finally, with regard to screen bleed, I probably don't have it.
All in all, it is a very fast tablet. It is very capable and may be faster than iPad 3 (a.k.a. "The New iPad"). Though the new iPad has a quad core GPU, it has a dual core CPU and CPU is what matters on a daily basis... Anyway, I think i went off topic a little here.
Long story short, I don't think you really need to return the tablet. It is a very capable device. Hopefully "Ubuntu for Android" gets released soon on this!

If you do that, you'll have to wait indefinitely. Because, everytime a great tablet (or phone) comes out, there is always a better one coming round the corner...
tegra3 more than strong enough. new Ipad A5x chip is hype n uses exact same CPU as in ipad2. check out other thread for proof. tegra3 CPU is alot more powerful than either ipad2 A5 or ipad2 A5x chip(which only includes a slight Gpu performance increase which is needed for their new display).
I'd say keep it if you satisfied with it. if not, just exchange it.

Well I think that I am really anal then, because yeah, it does bug me unfortunately. I really do need to get over it because like you said, I know that if I were to show my tablet to 100 people, 99 of them wouldn't even be able to notice it. Mine isn't "bright" as you describe it, its just DEAD. So on an all white screen it stays black. Same with just about every other color. No Pixel fixer applications do anything to help either. As for the screen bleed, it is only mostly visible with a black screen. Its on the right side of the screen and when I push on it a little bit it changes a little. I really wonder what causes that...
Anyway, I have made up my mind that I am going to keep my Prime. I love it and there is no major reason why I should dump it at this point. Glad you all talked me out of it. By the way, I noticed that you are from the X2 forums with the Melvin signature... haha too bad we are stuck that turd of a phone... We had to buy a Transformer to get our fill of ICS! lol
Sort of off topic but not really: Since I did buy this Prime as an open box I just thought about the possibility that someone could have bought this before me, locked the bootloader and then returned it... I REALLY don't want that since I really want my 1 year warranty... Is there a way for me to easily tell if my Prime has been unlocked? Thanks!

If you use the Asus bootloader, then it's unlocked, or you can try calling Asus, and giving your Serial number and see if it's in there.
If you have big problem with it, just try to exchange it from where you bought it, or a brick and morter store.

I believe you can't re-lock it once it is unlocked. And I believe you can't return it on warranty claims once it is unlocked, unless may be you are lucky. What you can do is return it and buy it at bestbuy and ask for a price match with Micro center's price. I got $53 off my Prime! Bestbuy is rad, and I love the price match thingy.
And yeah, I am from the Droid X2 forums! I didn't buy this for filling the ICS void per se but it is sweet that this has ICS! It is super smooth, though I didn't have much experience with Honeycomb to tell if it is any better than it. Still very sexy stuff!!!

To add on to the BestBuy thing, technically they require a microcenter store within 25 mile of where you live, but some agent doesn't know that.
I saw a pretty decent article the other day about upgrading the iPad but it seemed to apply well to other tablets, etc. it said to upgrade if you found yourself using it at least 10 hrs a week. it's wholly arbitrary, but the idea being, if you're going to spend 10+ hours a week with the Transformer it's worth keeping as your daily driver. It's a piece of tech that has become a part of your daily life.
There will always be something better within about 3 months in the Android tablet space. What I disagree with is that specs mean much outside Tegra 3s better video decoding and screen resolution that is probably going to get a lot better very soon.
So it appears that I have a dead pixel. I can't really tell. It's definitely not on the surface, so it's either dust underneath the screen or its a dead pixel. But it's a very very tiny black spot, right on the white part of the clock on the homescreen. Should I take this baby back? I can probably live with it for 2 years...i guess...it's just knowing it's there that bugs me. There's no danger of more dead pixels is there? Is one dead pixel indication that more may happen?

Run the app for 1 hour and that might fix it. It has worked for others.
Dumb question: is there any danger in running the fixer for that long?

If you look right at it you could suffer a seizure.
If the pixel is the only screen issue I'd say keep it. Swapped mine only to get one with a dead pixel somewhere else and now I also have the dreaded yellow cloud towards the bottom of the screen. So count yourself lucky if that's the worst of your problems. Take care.

Yellow cloud?
I've heard of these dead pixels and light leakage issues. I don't see any dead pixels, but I work nights too so my phone is always at lowest brightness setting.
Think if I knew I had one it would drive me crazy staring at it, lol. Anyone have a pic of what one looks like, maybe zoomed in?

Judging from the review on the market, NO. But, I haven't used it personally. however, I would think if something bad happened, you would see a ton of bad reviews talking about this.
HI, I just wanted to add something to the list of problems that the new evo is having, yesterday i went to the sprint store to buy an evo lte, but i couldnt take any home, since all of them were plagued by dead pixels, the sprint rep open six boxes and all of them had a least one dead pixel, I went home very frustrated i cant understant how HTC uses cheap screens on its premiun devices, I am one of the guys that cant stand to know to have a dead pixel on my screen, since once you know its there is a pain not to look at it. So i will keep going to every sprint store until i find one with no dead/stuck pixels. It may take months but ill be worth it. I personally suggest and encourage that you guys download the app called dead pixel test, and try to find any dead/stuck pixels on your screens if you do find some, take your device to sprint and return it, and get a new one without any deffect, lets make htc to stop giving us cheap quality parts in our premiun devices, we are paying a lot of money so we deserve to have a device with not deffects. I can understand a dead pixel on a tv screen because is big, but on a small screen is unacceptable!!!. Please tell me what you guys think about it, and please bear with my english since is not my first language. Thank you

Dead pixels and LCD screens go hand in hand. Its the nature of the beast. Just wait and see when the GS3 gets release.
I noticed last night that I had like 2 or 3 dead pixels
i can probably understand a dead/stuck pixel on a big screen but on a small screen is just unacceptable.
JFYI, I ran the dead pixel test on my old 3D and had some obvious ones on that phone, but I just ran it on this one and what I thought was a dead pixel was just a speck of dust. Kept thinking I was seeing them and kept being able to just wipe them off. Sounds dumb but try it.
well my experience with this phone has been a nightmare i have been to 5 sprint stores around my area including best buy, and i have checked 24 htc evos lte and all of them had a least one dead pixel on then, im really frustrated with htc for this, i really like the phone but im starting to think that all of you phones have a dead/stuck pixel as well but you havent check it throughly. i really want a evo lte but i not longer wish to fight with the sprint reps for going over and over and keep returning phones for this. i am not crazy maybe im just having bad luck, but its embarrasing going back to the store and all the reps looking at me like (i dont want to sell you anything), oh i really hate my luck. but i hate htc the most for using cheap screens on this phone.
Wow, I have a slight bit of the yellow cloud toward the bottom of my screen, and I thought about going to try and swap it... but from what I'm hearing about the amount of devices out there with dead pixels, I think I'm going to keep the one I have since there are no dead pixels on it. I've checked.
You may want to report these issues to Sprint either by calling them or by posting on their forums.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. My phone doesn't seem to have any issues at all. Curious to run that app, but don't want to be disappointed and find something wrong with my phone,,,

Hey guys, has anyone experienced issues with spots on the screen? Mine has developed 4 or 5 small spots on the screen, noticeable on white screens. The spots are super bright, almost like the back light in those spots is just at 100 all the time and are oh I'd say probably 2mm in diameter each. My unit is unlocked, I need to hear from someone at Asus on this if possible, this unit has already been back once for wifi/bt issues.

Mine has those developed those too, after a toddler sat on it.
Mine has it... no toddler. In fact I use a case. Kinda sucky

Yes, I have. A few bright on the left and right a few less bright.
It sucks!
Could this be a reason (would they accept this?) to exchange prime even though he is rooted.

Its generally called mura. If younare not unlocked they will RMA for this. I'm unlocked and they won't do anything for me. Good luck!
I have one on my screen, it has been there since I got my tablet but I didn't want RMA the device for that since it hasn't grown yet and it is fairly small. Plus I don't want to RMA and end up having more issues.
You know that kind of thing, where they won't RMA something which is clearly not caused by anything to do with unlocking or rooting really annoys me. I defended this tablet for a long time, but I've gotten sick of it and honestly I can't bring myself to ever buy anything Asus again, this one product speaks volumes about them as a company.
Hopefully I can sell this thing and get a real tablet which I actually enjoy using. The wifi is still weak, the colors on my screen are washed out, I have the blobs and just to add insult to injury the IO problems which make this thing run like $hit. My Galaxy Nexus with dual core and 1GHz stock speed runs better than my quad core ov to 1.6. Figure that out

You are incorrect. I am unlocked and have a ROM on my TF201 and I sent it in due to mura in 3 spots on my screen. They replaced my screen and I/O board and it is on way back to me now. And let me say it was a 2 week process, and I was left in the dark as their site shows no history of my RMA. Yesterday I got the email stating what was replaced and that it has been shipped back to me.
I simply said in the letter you must include with RMA that support and effort ASUS has put into this product is unacceptable and I want mine fixed to 100% perfect state. So I put a sticky note on the screen pointing to affected areas and that was it.
I have no idea why you just assume being unlocked means the end of help from ASUS, many users here are unlocked and had successful RMA cases.
And just for all you who will try to say I am wrong here is proof:
(BTW: It has androwook 2.1 ROM on it)
If you were not given a quote, then your unit was repaired under warranty. It looks like we replaced your LCD screen due to the dead pixels on the screen. And we also replaced your I/O Board for you touch pad. You will have a 90 day manufactures warranty on the parts that have been replaced.
Thank you for your patience!

Honestly I haven't really had an bad experience with asus in the past I had a few DOA motherboards from them that were replaced and I was also able to get a replacement chip for one of my motherboards when a bios flash failed.
I also really don't RMA anything unless it is completely broke, for the reason that it may come back worse or with the same problem with a message saying nothing wrong, and I wouldn't be able to use my device during the time it is being "repaired". If the problem isn't critical then I don't want to waste my time doing something when the outcome may become worse.
I have had worse experiences with Microsoft and so has my co-workers, my boss has sent in his Gears of War xbox back to microsoft 5 times because they can't seem to get it working right. And with all the time it has been taking he might as well just bought another xbox the first time he sent it in. He has had a long history of microsoft not properly fixing his xbox when they red ring or the wireless controller chip fails.
Although I am also annoyed the the galaxy nexus out performs the prime, I just got the phone a few weeks ago and everything just works like it should. If every android device preformed as advertised then that would really help out androids image and if they also updated in a timely manner.
