Hey guys, I live in an area that doesn't have lte... I have 4g hspa... Well the issue that I am having is that when I am using hspa it tends to drop to the edge E network... This happens to frequently...
I would like to know if you guys ever see your data bar ever show a G.... I have called at&t tech support about it and they couldn't trouble shoot it... they forward it to higher technicians... I don't know if this is only for my area or could it be only on the note?
Hope to hear your guys input on this... Thanks...

Some ppl are having this issue...I personally have not (knock on wood)..maybe device is defective or the radios are not strong enough..every phones radio/signal quality will differ.

I've also read of others having the problem, but I haven't had it.
I've never gotten below 4g, it became a point where i didn't even know if 3g or edge even existed on this phone(i know it did but i haven't seen anything other then 4g and 4glte?) Im statified, but sometimes il go from 4g to nothing, but very rare!

dcemtp1 - "4G" on the Note is 3G.
Mine goes from 4G LTE to just 4G to E.

When I'm at work on base, practically in a bunker. My building doubles as a storm shelter. My Note will display 4G, E, and G.
Data is all but none existent at that point.

That's just about the full progression.
E > G > 3G > H ('4G' on the Note) > 4G LTE

Wouldn't the G be the lowest at GPRS? Then Edge, 3G, HSPA + and then LTE?

Whoops you are right, its been a while since I've dealt with those slow systems.
G (for GSM, not GPRS) > E > 3G > H ('4G' on the Note) > 4G LTE
At&t claims this is because the phone can't distinguish between towers with and without enhanced back-haul. Therefore all 3g shows up as 4g because it could possible be 4g, lol.
Thanks for those replies... I have yet to see the 3g Network ever being captured by my note... I have seen it go 4G > E > G > 4G.... And it continues this Network Detection...

Does the SGS2 have 4g support like the Atrix? Hard to imagine a phone with these goodies doesn't have 4g.

Yes it does, it has 21 Mbps HSPA. Call that 4g if you want, that's the fake 4g att is claiming.

One Good thing i have noticed : it shows G when idle and H+ signal when ever I am using data.
Atrix is only 14mb/s where as this is 21mb/s so its theoreticaly faster

4G right now is nothing but a carrier marketing gimmick, but yes our SGS II's have support for AT&T's (formerly known as 3G until T-Mobile made it cool to call it) 4G network. I wish it was LTE capable, but I suppose that's what the SGS III will be for eh?
For those of you who are running Team Whiskey's Bionix V 1.3.1 rom, Is there a difference between 'H' and '3G' on the top bar? Does 'H' really mean we are getting 4g like speeds or is it just cosmetic? And what does 3g mean if 'H' is just cosmetic? I have been running this rom for the longest time and im as confused, about it, as the first day I flashed it.
H just means you are using the hspa network for 3g, instead of the old 3g towers

So the speeds would be the same in that case?
H is for data transfer.
G/3G is for voice calls.
Bionix or not, these are standard across all non-4g phones/networks.
You'll never see an H when talking to someone and you'll never see a G/3G when browsing.

Ya but once those up and down arrows light up it should flip to H bc of the data transfer.

tells me that the phones use whatever it's connected to for both voice and data. So adding in H for HSPA, then 3g would = UMTS, and obviously E = edge and G = Gprs. Or that's my understanding anyway.

This is correct.
HSPA is basically the 4g network used for data usage "H"
3g is a bit slower than H and is sometimes used for networking
2g or G is even slower than 3g or H, I think it was the first "G"
Then E or edge is usually used when you are out of cities and in the country. It's relatively slow too.
H is the fastest.
So to summarize
H > 3g > E > G

I'll try and keep this from turning into a book.
Basically I have a HTC Thunderbolt right now. It is being replaced under the extended warranty that I have with Verizon. Since they don't have any more T-bolts they are sending me a HTC Incredible 4G under my total equipment protection policy.
I have already ordered a Nexus 4 (being delivered Monday) and will be going to T-Mobile with that eventually bringing my wife over as well when her contract is up. The only reason I did the warranty claim was because my T-bolt was dead and I might as well get a free phone out of them before dropping them since my contract is up and such. That way rather than have a 1.5 year old dead T-bolt that is good for nothing but the trash, I would have a functioning phone which I could sell. Make sense so far?
So my initial thought was that I would sell the phone take the cash to recoup some of my cost of the N4 or use it toward buying my wife's new phone on the T-Mobile network. Then I saw something about the Incredible 4G being compatible with a GSM network and that if I modify the APN that I might be able to get it on T-Mobile with HSPA+. If that is the case I will just keep the phone and have a brand new phone for free for my wife rather than sell this one and buy a different one. When they ship out the new phone it will come with a Verizon SIM that I can use to get it on their network, my account is still active with them so I can call them and get and try and get an unlock code if I need one of those before I cancel my account and I can get any updates that may be out there for the phone.
Of course if this won't work I would rather sell the phone as basically a new phone, well it might be a refurb but I don't know that for sure because they said they had to send me a complete kit because I don't have a battery and battery cover that would fit since I have a T-bolt now. Though they may have complete phones as refurbs.
So if it will work, what will I need to do before I cancel my plan? Though there was that new law that went into effect the other day that makes it illegal to unlock a phone.. But if I let Verizon do it I would imagine it isn't an issue.

I tried that. Here goes some different steps I took:
I started with cyyanogen last nightly build.
Tried switching all the different settings in the hidden men u (gsm, CDMA only prl) etc. Changed the bands from automatic to to aus2. No good except auto and USA. 2g
Did this on viper and got the options 800mhz and 1900 MHz. No good on 1900. 800mhz 2g. (E)
Used the very alpha miui ROM from the general section and got two different radio strength bars. One was 1x and the one above it (weird right) was 3g. Had signal on the 1x but couldn't use the phone right away. Had no service on the 3g (although it started out with 3bars and slowly went to 0 and stayed) changed the APN to tfdata. Got phone but no data. Had to put the phone back onto gsm only to get data. Which gavee just the one signal bar.

not in this case, you said you were not using your phone in stock, theres a bug where the 3g symbol got changed to g for gsm users, i read about it, statusbar theming on htc devices caused the h symbol to be swaped to g symbol, sorry about not being clear on last post
No. The g is definitely 1g. 5-15 KB a sec. All the symbols work I think because when I had Verizon on the same rom it showed the 1x, 3g, lte, icons, depending upon where I was. Usually lte or 3g. I'm going to get some go phone sims in a week or whenever they come in. The sim cards are cheap so I can change them out no prob. I just have ran out of $350 a month for phone service. I can almost deal with it Cuz its slow but very stout signal. Never dropped a download yet. I just don't like having to set up all my DL to run while I sleep. I'm used to lte ya dig!

You have to use a difderent sim card. There are people on here who know what oones tp get but they dont really like to. AT&T is supposed to work. Im not sure. You cannot put another frequency antenna on this phone without taking it apart and using a soldering iron. (Good luck!)

you are arguing with a very experienced person here. him and i both know a thing or two about phones and i must say, if he's sure its a bug, then it is. I am inclined to believe him too because we all know that HTC programmed this phone for a specific service initially, and they were not counting on it ever going outside the VZW network. That being said, there is no way for the phone to tell what network its on. Case and point... i just manually flashed my phone to the MetroPCS PRL and it still says Verizon Wireless... The network speed i get will not be shown as LTE even though i have it, because it only ever used GSM for LTE(which is partially GSM-based technology), not voice and data. So, on the stock rom, the phone is and will be "confused". CM10.1 works great and DOES know the difference. You will have best results by being s-off as i am.
Ok, I have gone through the forums quite a bit and I cannot seem to figure it out. I have 4g be when I do a speed test is very low. I have tried several modems and they all are basically the same thing in terms of ping and network speeds. Currently, since I flashed a lot of modems the current one is unknown. Can someone whom is smarter than I figure this out? I cannot make heads or tales from this and the included pictures should help out a bit. Thanks everyone in advance

Marketing Signal Indicators
I can confirm that in my area with a Nexus 4, the phone will switch between H (3G) and H+ (4G) AT&T HSPA and HSPA+. With the One X+ however, it will only display 4G LTE, 4G, and E. Also, Viper XL+ lets you flash the stock international signal indicators which display LTE, H+, H, and E in my area. The decision to only include the 4G HSPA signal indicator is most likely a marketing decision.
