Application wanted: Scan and search - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Android stuff is so powerful. Is there an application that can scan a picture (the face to be specific) and search the web for more pics of that person? Google Goggles kinda sorts does it but it only finds the exact same picture and maybe has a name. I'd like to just scan somebody and find more of her. An accuracy range of at least 50% would be OK. [Q] Is it Possible To have a Speedometer in Google Maps?

Hello , Is it possible to add a Speedometer for the Google Maps App?
Thank You!
That's a pretty good question.
I guess you would have to capture a lat/long and start a timer. Then have a polling method to get the next set of lat/long. From that, I"m pretty sure you can get distance travelled. If you have distance travelled and time elapsed, you should be able to capture average speed.
And if you remember Calculus 1, if you make the distance travelled infinitely smaller, you'll get close to instantaneous speed.
that would be a great app
I might be able to look at this, but it's going to be a few weeks. I was actually creating a "tracker" app to allow employers to track employees in the field, but I was interrupted by another project.
Funny thing is I would think the navigation would have this. I had it on ovi maps in my Nokia nuron.

Some of the (expensive) 3rd-party navigation solutions have this feature, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer for the Google Navigation app not to have it given its relative simplicity. I think the native GPS libs actually provide current speed natively so it should just be a case of pulling the value out of the system and overlaying it.
Well, now there is kinda cheap app to do that . Please check my thread:
[APP] gMapsSpeed | Speed info and speeding alerts for Google Navigation
That would be great! That's one of the things that I really miss about my old Blackberry. Maps was great.

WalkSafe on wildfire

Hi folks,
i recently read an article about an app called WalkSafe. It basically uses an algorithm to detect incoming cars using the camera while you are walking on the street and calling. It basically can save your life So I wanted to download it form the market, but found out it was not compatible with the Wildifire. So I downloaded the app from some filesharing website (the app is free so no piracy ) and installed it. But it just forever hangs on the startup screen (when there appears a bar under the status bar with the name of the app). Is there a fix for this? Is it wildfire related or app related ? I couldn't find anything on the web so far...
Thanks in advance
So you are ready to give your life into the hands of an app algorithm rather than waiting for a bit and getting off the street for texting/calling? Whatever floats your boat.
Anyway, its most probably the app itself. The devs have probably not configured it for low end devices.
Its not that i will trust this app, i was just curious to see if it works. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion

Request : Google googles modification

Can somebody modify the application google googles and instead of searching the web to search to the photos I had to a mobile folder.
For example in a folder in my mobile I have 1000 photos with some items , so when I take a photo to search for a similar photo in this local folder and not to the google’s database
I think that the comparison between the pictures is not done by your phone, but by the google servers. The goggles app just sends the picture to the servers, so what you want can't be easily done...
Yes propably you are right,
Do you know where can I upload the photos so the Google goggles will be able to find it
I see what you want to do, but this would be very difficult. You need your pictures uploaded somewhere, it is not important where, but then google has to index them and this takes time. Also, you need some other pages linking to yours, because this is how Google's pagerank algorithm works (this is a simplification, of course).
And in my experience, except for flat things, like pictures or books, Google Goggles response is not very good.
Probably your best option is to set up a computer with some image recognition software, and then start a web server on that computer where you can upload your pictures and get your response. You could use something like neuroph (http://neuroph.sourceforge.net/image_recognition.html) .
As you can imagine, this is not something that can be done in a day.
Maybe someone else can give you more ideas.
Good luck.
thanks for the information, finally is more difficult than my first thought

[Q] Reverse Image Search on Android/ Google Now Support (Question)

Title basically says it. This is a super small deal and I can't see it happening. In fact the only example I can think of right now for this is say, you don't know the name of a car. So you take a picture with your smart phone. Go into your picture display app and long press the picture. Little Google Now interface pops up. "What car is this?" And then....it simply tells you.
Does anybody else ever find that the only way they can describe something is visually but they would like to know what it is? It's great to be able to do this on Google normally (which I love for finding better resolution images of something), but i only do that for pictures found on the web and sometimes, would like to know what the hell I'm looking at.
I'm pretty new to the development side of Android but I've been hovering around this forums for a little while and knew this would be the best place to ask. Is this a reasonable feature to look into?

have you tried out google goggles?
already exists. Google Goggles will scan any picture and give you back google image search results that are similar.
Search by image on android phone
I just found alternative solution using the Search by image app (free). This app let me can search by image on smartphone via google easily. You can also share images from any website to social media in one click. This app is available on Play Store you can download here : play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.searchbyimage.app

Camera Autofocus and Barcode Scanning!

New Question (ignore old question):
Is there another forum anywhere on the internet where a question like mine might be answered?
Thank you.
My App scans book barcodes (the camera searches, recognizes, and then decodes the barcode).
When all the book barcodes are the same distance from the camera, the App is very fast!
But when I set a book down to grab another book, the camera loses focus and then the autofocus has to take FOREVER (several seconds) to search for the next barcode.
QUESTION: What are some things that can be tweaked? Is there a way to alter other settings (e.g. "aperature" or whatever) so that EVERYTHING is in focus (so the autofocus doesn't have to search and search and search to find the next book barcode)?

I wanted to add that I'm trying to think "out of the box" so if there's anyone with any ideas, no matter how far out, please let me know!!
