I am using the production version of Xperia S and found the in call volume extremely low, when compare with my old Samsung Galaxy Note. Is there any hack or shortcut that help before my boss complain about that.
Thanks.

Same here. Not on earpiece, but while on speakerphone. I barely hear anything.
It is quite shocking most of the reviews say the volume was loud and clear. Hmm..
ps: XPS plays song quite loud IMHO, but not during on-call
Sony Hong Kong posted a reply in their facebook saying that the earpiece is positioned near video call camera (i.e. right side), but I don't experience any difference ... still so low in call volume than my old Samsung.
Need a hack or what ... the Engineering Mode trick that someone posted somewhere about Xperia X10 does not work ...
No incall issues at all. Nice and crisp sound.

I also got my XS in Hong Kong and does not has any problem for the ear volume. Have you remove the protective screen plastic sheet? Most of the user complaint when they receive the machine and trial the use test the machine.

Actually great had yesterday a long distance call. Far better as my o2x
Sent from my Sony Xperia S (LT26i)
The call volume is very acceptable. Arc/Arc S was slightly louder and X10 was much softer. X10 call voulme was actually too soft to even be useable in most public areas.
Actually just got off the phone from a call.
Unless your phone is defective or your hearing is not good I think the in call volume is great. It's crisp too which is a nice bonus.
I too have this problem, I can barely hear anything inside a shopping mall, which isnt the case for the iphone 4s or the galaxy s2, is there no way to crank the volume beyond the max?

there is 2 layer of protective applied on the screen with first layer have print but the 2nd layer did not block the earpiece, should i remove it too? thanks
Yeah, I have trouble understanding my call partner, too, for example in trains or on the road. Thats really annoying, I would hope that there is a hack or something like that.
Me too!
we should report this to SONY
It seems that it's not problem on every Xperia S, as I actually have to lower volume to about 75% to talk comfortable. Did you install latest firmware? Maybe it was a problem with earlier soft.
hep me too
The call volume is excellent for me. However its when i put it on speaker mode that it sucks really bad, this can be fixed throe software cause the speaker is excellent when playing up music but sucks when using for calls.
I have this problem too the call volume is definitely low compares to my previous phone Nexus S.

Hi everybody, I was wondering how is the call quality on the S3. I've been using HTC phones (S710 and Tilt2) for the last 5 years, and I haven't been happy with the call quality on either device, my old Nokias used to have much clearer sound.

From what i can tell its amazing. I can hear everything on this end of the call, if not too much, and the other person can hear me perfectly clear.
Thank you. It's very hard to find reliable firsthand info on call quality about smartphones.

Well compared to my Desire HD, its a lot lot better. Even little things like when you press phone, it does it instantly instead of a delay before it starts ringing.
I can confirm the superb call audio quality. I had a HTC Desire before, which was always too quiet when I was in a loud environment. No problems with the SG3 in that situation.

I had a galaxy nexus before the sgs3 and i must say its a huge improvement. I had to push the nexus to my ear to hear my girlfriend -_-.. Now its so loud and clear i had to lessen the volume xD!
I really like it.. Its like al the shortcomings of the galaxy nexus are gone and with free extra's like quad core.. BETTER screen without crappy smugdes in de back that u see if u scroll if u know what i mean. The camera is freakin awesome
So i went off topic.. all in all the phone has a very loud and clear soud for voicecalling
Thnx for the feedback. My Desire Z is perfect, but the call quality is horrible. It's not nearly loud enough. Glad to hear that it's way better with the Galaxy. Sorry HTC, i'll jump the ship for that reason.
aside from firsthand info from people who have just gotten the phone, there many reviews out already regarding this topic and all of them are in agreement that sgs3's call quality is very good.
i had a gs2 and 0 audio problems... now with S3 i have metallic voice when calling, solved turning off noise reduction. i'm italian, and other people here have the same problem too. dunno if is firmware problem or a bad unit.
my firmware is XXLE8.
Call quality is very good however several people have complained about not been able to hear me very clearly. I have had to hold mic pretty close to my mouth in comparison to HOX to ensure clarity when speaking.
Perhaps I have faulty handset, don't know.
I also have had people saying they can't hear me properly or that I am under water.
I have also noticed that the "startup" speed of the voice/microphone is slow... (if this is even possible) however that is how it feels e.g. someone calls, you say "hello" then they say hello? hello? then you say hello? then they can hear you, it's like sometimes they don't hear you at first until you repeat yourself.
in comparison with my Optimus 2x, the sound is far better, clear and loud on the S3..
Really better.
Ive got complains that i also sound underwater or "canned", i hear the other part perfectly but they say they hear me bad.
Hardware or software issue?

I'm on my second S3 because of extremely poor call quality, and this one had it too. I could hear people perfectly fine, but people could barely hear me and the sound was very badly garbled.
Odd thing is that it only seemed to happen when I was home, so I've been shutting off every electronic device I could find to see what was causing interference. Strange thing is that I didn't have a problem if I was using speakerphone.
Anyway, I disabled the noise reduction and my problem went away!!

Don't forget that there are three different voice settings for the earpiece.
I disabled noisereduction and callers hear me waaaay better now.
Anyone tried noisereduction on and some EQ settings?
If so whats the best settings you got for far.

Good day expert,
I love Sony Xperia Ultra Z. But I found out that Xperia Z Ultra can't perform a good phone function especially the speaker. The sound produced from the speaker is really low and unclear especially during phone call. This doesn't help even I have put it to loudspeaker. I have adjusted the volume control to max. I barely listen clearly the others party conversation. I feel shame.
I even tried the setting of (Normal, Bright, ..., slow talk) but it doesn't help. I confirmed it is not my Z Ultra defect as I checked others Z Ultra at retail store. All have the same poor and low sound output from the speaker.
How to really enjoy such a great phone if the sound produced is not loud and clear?
The sound really not acceptable (blur and poor volume output).
Seeking for help from SONY and experts.
Here is how I've ranked the audio (headphones) performance:
1)Nokia Phones (N9/Lumia)
2) HTC One X
3) iPhone 4s
4) Xperia Z Ultra
in regards to speaker output, i believe because of its placement vs. HTC OneX, for me its an improvement
I hope there are mods to increase the stock speaker volume as well as beats audio algorithms for music because its lacking right now!
only dumb people can talk about poor sound from external dynamic on water proof devices. Sorry but I'm sick and tired of threads like this.
Sound through headphones is beautiful and very audiophiliac with ClearAudio+ (enable)
Try to change your build prop at system and see what happen. You can search for xda forum to see how to change your build prop for increase device volume.
But first you need to rooted device.
I tried, now better than earlier. And remember don't too loud

You should have researched well before buying. Almost all reviews noted that the 2 weaknesses of the ultra are speaker volume and lack of flash. Most of us knew this and bought it, as this is truly a great device.

I don't really know why so many people complain about it. It's pretty par for the course in terms of tiny "external" speakers. Fairly tinny, but loud enough to be too loud in a quiet room. Note that the volume drops by a large amount after submerging the device in water. You need to wait for the speaker grille to purge itself of liquid before the volume returns.

I agree with you 100%. I have no idea how anyone can complain about the audio quality.
The audio quality on my Ultra is great. The in-call volume is sufficient and the sound is perfectly good both on both sides.
I just don't care about the speakers too much since I use headphones. I wouldn't even think about the idea of using a phone as a "stereo" by playing music through its speakers.
The audio quality through headphones is great too. I certainly agree that it provides high quality even for "mobile audiophile use".

I do hope the Bluetooth Headset (is it SBH52?) can keep up with the Good quality Audio... I don't want to plug in my headphones directly on the phone since the earphone jack's placement is awkward if you ask me.. It would be better if it was placed on the top edge and not on the side.
I use wired headphones, bluetooth headphones and headsets and stream audio bluetooth in my car. I don't really need or actually think that a phone's speakers are all that important so I am glad to have efforts focused elsewhere. I'd get a Jawbone Jambox or something similiar if I really needed good audio from speakers on the go.
I have a friend who has an HTC One and I agree they are the best speakers I have heard on a smartphone but I still think they are pretty crappy. I appreciate the speakers on my Nexus 10 but again I think it is a waste of time ever expecting good speakers on a small and slim device.

Well, I got that he was talking about the earpiece volume, but it also seemed he was saying that switching to the loud speaker didn't help either and I guess the thread evolved from there.
Anyway, a headset of some description should help in either case.
You're right though a couple of people did jump on him a bit harshly but it is pretty normal for people to get defensive about their devices.

I dont mind the sound, but make sure your ear is over the speaker on top. Its a big phone if you go to the right or left it will sound muffled. Maybe you are already doing this but if not try it. Night and day for me.
Nio doubt quality is great but speaker sound is not sufficient, atleast you guys agree on this despite the fact it is waterproof or what ever!!!!!!!

Z2 in-call quality is really good.
Normally I have in-call volume set high but on the Z2 I had to turn it down to half as it was very loud, so loud it could be confused with speakerphone not only that but the clarity was spot on too, overall much better than my previous OneX.

I was hoping for some advice. I have received my Z2 today - the overall phone seems amazing, but the call quality through the earpiece seems really poor. There is muffled sound, clearly some digital background and sometimes it is quite hard to hear the other person. I have changed settings and sim (as I thought it could be static) but all to no avail.
Any advice I would be grateful.
I am with Vodafone UK and quality on my iPhone 5s was amazing but this is poor.

I have tried that as well. The calls just sound digitised and there is a lot of noise with the calls - it is louder than the voices themselves.
I hear quiet noise during call exactly when opposite speak...looks like speaker generize voice and strange noise in background.
EDIT: noise is present all time but when opposite speaks it is little louder...

No, mine does this too. I'm hoping an update addresses it.
I also hear a little bit of noise when the other person speaks, and the earpiece seems to not be 100% fixed and I can notice some vibration with loud sound (might be just my phone).
I love everything about this phone except sound quality that I found disappointing in general (earpiece, loud speakers, headphone sound...)

I hope that an update fixes this but it seems hardware related on my handset.
Called Sony - they know nothing of this issue!
I received my Z2 yesterday and I have absolutely no issues with my earpiece. Call quality is great comparing to my iPhone 5. It's nice and clear. It is also so loud that others (people around me) can hear my earpiece too. This is a first phone I had to turn down the earpiece volume down.
BTW I on Three UK.
Yes I agree. I love the phone but disappointed with the call quality. Im In the UK on EE.
One thing I would say I did notice a similar noise on my Iphone 5s but not as bad so maybe because the Z2 is much louder and clearer I am now noticing it more.
I dont notice it all the time.
Other than that I love the phone.
I can see that on very quiet places noise level is higher, on little loud places it disappear; could it be bad job of noise reduction alghoritm?
It is mediocre at best for me. Hissing and some noise. Same for people on the other end. AT&T here.

I had xperia ultra T2 in the past and i found that the sound level of the voice call is really low. Searching the inter net at that time, i knew that was a general trend or attitude of Sony for all her mobiles, to the extent that many people tried to find a SW solution.
Now I am thinking to get either a C4 or Z5, but I am still concerned of that problem.
Any one can give a comment here ? Thanks in advance
I personally think it's because of the design of the Sony's phones. They have the tenancy to put the speaker at the edge of the phone. Making the positioning to the ear a little awkward.

This is true. Took me over a week to get used to where to place my ear for a call. Even to this day I'm still learning. Guess it's just a learning curve for the design of this phone.
I find in a loud environment the call volume at its maximum is still a little on the soft side. This phones speaker volume is also very soft compare to my previous phones.
I'm sure these can all be fixed in future updates or if there is more development support.

The weight is a little heavy, around 189g, however, you are getting fantastic build quality and the usual Sony Aluminium frame surrounding the phone. It feels solid!
It's a little lighter than the Z Ultra.
