Possible poor battery life fix - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello everyone. I know we're all tired of battery life threads, but I made this offering a possible solution.
At one point, I was experiencing 1% battery loss on standby with wifi and data off.
If you are experiencing poor battery life, I highly suggest you do a factory reset on your device. Now I am experiencing 9 hours and loss of 4%, which I am extremely happy about.
Hope this helps someone!

I consider 1% per hour (wifi off, data on) to be normal. That's after a factory reset back when I first got the phone.

[Q] High cell standby drain battery with wi-fi

Hey,
I just got my new Samsung GT-I9300 international version.
I have the XXALF2 Build, I didn't install much apps at all (Temple Run and app built by me).
I drained the battery until the end - then charged it to 100%.
I synced only my google account, and I have weird batter drain when wi-fi is on and phone in sleep.
Every something around 10 minutes the battery drops in 1%, and it's very weird because on my Captivate, if I let my phone stay with wi-fi it was about 2% every hour which is pretty normal.
When I look at battery stats I see Cell Standby with something like 50% and I really don't know why.
I got my new micro sim today and yesterday the phone was without sim and with wifi and still drained battery and showed high cell standby.
Should I make some kind of calibration on my battery? Is someone else having this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Elad
This is well documented already with plenty of threads as well as a fix. A search will bring you lots of results.
It's actually a reporting error and not really draining your battery. It's been fixed on the newer firmwares.
You'll need to dig further to find out what is actually draining your battery. Given it's still new it'll probably settle in a few days.

Yes, I found the fix of the xml file in the framework. I'm really sorry for not searching before, my bad.
But still, is there something that drain the battery because 1% every 10 minutes is not good at all. Now I see Android System right after screen.
I didn't installed anything yet, so I'm afraid to think what will happen in the future when more apps will be added.
Do you have some recommendation of first steps I should do with the new battery?
Thanks
To see if it's wifi related, at night switch off wifi and test. Maybe even switch off data to see what happens. But as I said, it's still probably a bit early to really tell. My phone took a while to settle. Or maybe it was the custom kernal I installed (siyah).

yerr. just give it a few days. im sure theres other stuff on the interent that can help too
Ok I flashed XXBLG8 and the problem gone! Battery is really great, the phone was on sleep, with wifi off and mobile data on, and only 1% was down after a hour!! I guess the previous build was buggy. Thanks everybody
Ok - I think that the problem is with wi-fi.
With wi-fi the battery is drained very quick on sleep and with mobile data the battery holding fine.
Mobile data suppose to drain the battery more quickly than wi-fi so it must be a bug with wifi.
Really weird and annoying :/

[Q] Horrible Battery Life - Second Device- Crap Kernel?

Anyone else experiencing horrible batter drain? Android OS is taking up 50-60% on average and it just eats it up while idle. I'm thinking about a return, this is my second handset, and with a locked bootloader, im losing faith in a quick solution. Any ideas?
Minimal use and quick setup with two to three app dowloads, and my 40% charged new device was down to zero in 2 hours.
I've noticed some battery quirks so far. My percentage drops 3% simply by locking and unlocking my phone within a few minutes. I've also seen it jump up in percentage once so not sure. Maybe there is something in the OS that isn't optimized that's causing the battery drain and quirks? I dunno. Be great to hear from some other people on this issue.

Working on BT unlock so i would wait.
I've only had one charge on mine but it seems to be going good for me. I made it over a full day with 3+ of screen time.

what percentage does your "android os" show? I'm wondering why my second handset is the same. Did you root yours and remove the bloatware?

Hi give it a couple of charge cycles it will definitely improve.
Yes, I've got the same problem. The OS takes most of the battery. Idle is fine, but with any use battery drops very fast and gets extremely hot, as well.

Keep in mind that these are new phones with NEW BATTERIES. With that being said, you need to "cycle" (charge to 100% then discharge to 0% <repeat 3-5x's) the battery before we judge and jump into conclusions. Just sayin

keep that in mind. just came as a surprise, never had a device out of the box have this bad of battery life since my g2x or some old htc.

For the record, I'm also having pretty lousy battery life. OS taking up 55%+. Last night I charged it to 100%, played with it until it was about 93% and then went to bed. Woke up this morning and it was at 65% with zero deep sleep and 80% OS usage.
Something's funky. I like the phone but can't be dealing with this constantly.
A:
EDIT: Turns out the extreme drain was from the radio. I had switched off LTE in the hidden menu and apparently that causes a ton of wakelocks and prevents deep sleep. As soon as I turned LTE back on, deep sleep came back. So that's somewhat encouraging.
I'll have to look at that. I'm getting a day with light use out of my second phone after a few charges, but it gets a little scary when im using it. I'm staying optimistic, my s3 was just phenomenal with battery life after rom kernel additions.
Can you explain how you turned off/on lte and the menu path?
I dont see an apn option other than the stock one (which im assuming is lte enabled). I'd like to see if it makes a difference. Thanks.
you need to enable network menu in the build.prop and a menu will appear where apn is

My battery life is not great, but it is not bad either I'll judge it more in a couple days after it goes through a few cycles.

This is really disappointing. Physically, this phone is fantastic. It looks great and the specs are terrific but it's crippled by absolutely horrid software which I suspect is the reason for the abysmal battery life.
After my first day with the phone yielded less than 10 hours I decided to do a factory reset and set the phone to Eco Mode. That improved things slightly... I managed to get 14 hours but that was with limited usage. In fact, the only significant difference in results was that, in Eco Mode, Android OS shows that it is consuming 80% of the battery vs 53% the previous day.
There is something seriously wrong with these things... the fact that some people are saying that they aren't seeing the problem has me worried that it may be some sort of hardware-related issue.

I would guess those people that aren't seeing this are not looking at the battery stats, I have never seen Android take up this % of battery on any device and I have been using android since the Hero... about a good 15 devices or more ago I have lost count. Come next Thursday I am going to go switch out for something else if the boot loader is not unlocked yet.

[Q] Need assistance for battery drain

Hey guys, I've been having some battery life issues with my SGS II for quite awhile now and decided to seek help now as I can't quite take charging twice a day anymore. I've uploaded the BBS as well as screen shot of the battery usage for a full drain (part 1), as well as an overnight drain (part 2). I appreciate any help given in deciphering what is the cause of the drain.
My current ROM is Slim v2.9.0 using CM10 Kernel.
Let me know if there's any more information needed, thanks in advance!
You don't have any serious battery drainer.. Have you thought about getting a second battery though?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I've tried changing batteries with my brother's phone (1 day charge rate with heavy usage) and still achieved pretty much the same battery life when on my phone.
I've noticed that I have this problem with AOSP/AOKP roms. While I'm on some Samsung based custom, battery is excellent. All with same kernels!
Maybe you should try flash something like Neatrom as Second rom and see how long the battery lasts.
Sent from my GT-I9100
thanks for the advice, I'll give that a try!
I fully agree with kilometers4 (post #2), looks like poor battery capacity. However, as you already changed the battery without significant effect, it must be something else.
Looking at the logs you provided I would run the exact same "tests" but with the data connection disabled. These results could help in further debugging.

[Q] Very fast battery draining!

Hello! I bought this phone last month. Since I got it, I've never experienced any problem with it. For four days, I noticed that the battery drains very quickly, without any logical explanation for this. The data connection is turned off, Wi-Fi is turned off. Last evening, I charge it to 100%. This morning,I found it turned off, with 0% battery. What solutions do you have to solve this problem? Have you encountered this problem?

Can you please provide some more details on this?
I.E. What is it plugged into to charge? Laptop, Desktop, AC, etc etc.
- I ask this because I had a phone that would actually consume more power than a USB port could put out. when turning off the laptop, it actually allowed a back drain for some reason, and the next morning the device was dead. (Not this phone)
Also, what applications are running? Any?
Finally, you can try to retrain your battery... Wiping stats does not work, ever. So despite what anyone tells you, don't do it. You're just wasting time. SOURCE
So, how do you retrain your battery? Let it die completely. Then plug it in to charge. Don't use it while it's charging if you can help it. DO NOT remove it from the charger until it's at 100%. Once this is done, use it til it dies on it's own. Then yet again, charge it fully and then go back to your normal use.
In some cases, these batteries can go bad, for various reasons. A quick test, but is not always trustworthy is to spin your battery on either side. If it makes more than 2 full rotations, it's swelling and going out. Replace it.
The best alternative is to take it to a battery shop, and let them put it on a Cadex machine. (Pronounced Kay-Dex) ... This machine will charge and discharge the battery several times over a few hours and truly test the current life -vs- the life it should be. Anything rated less than 80% remaining life should be replaced.
SOURCE: I work here
I charge it only from power outlet, with stock charger.

6 hours 40 minutes from 100% to 10%, and the phone in stand by! Cell standby - 45%, Phone idle - 48%, Screen - 7%
And all this after a hard reset and retrain battery! The battery is almost new (aprox 1 month)!
I want it to make a screen shot of battery drain, but I have no clue how to do that on LG L9...

I attached a screenshot. Yesterday I changed the battery. Same problem! I take it this screenshot this morning, after I fully charged the phone ... Same problem, a new battery.
Can you please tell us what applications you have running in the background?
Also deactivate google now.(or the google services in google maps). download and install GSam Battery Monitor and after a cycle tell us what applications are eating your battery the most. It's clear that you either use yout phone(screen on time) allot or there is/are some applications that prevent your phone from going to sleep.
I use battery widget reborn and it shows me wneh the phone woke up,when the phone had the screen on,wi-fi on,gps on. Try it as well.
I also had battery issues when on JB. I downgraded back to ics. It's much more reliable when it comes to battery life. And the performance is about the same.
I don't have any app installed. After i replace the battery, i made a hard reset and I did not installed any app. I will install cpuspy and betterbatterystats for more results. I will back tomorrow. Until than, maybe you can provide me more advices. It can be from a damage sim card?

I guess your signal quality isn't good enough because cell standby is eating up more than 40% of battery. Cell standby in my phone is only around 5%..

I removed the sim card, but in flight mode is the same problem... The last solution is to change the rom with a custom one. Any recomandation?
It's not that. Not the signal. It's the firmware. JB has these problems. In ICS Display is the major consumer followed by Phone Idle and Cell Standby.
I also had these problems in JB and reverted back to ICS .
I would advise you to install CM 10.1 on the phone. The battery life is better than stock. I get around 12-16 hours normally. The latest RC4 has fixed almost all the bugs present in older CM 10.1 variations. Give it a try.
I will root the phone and I will give a try with CM 10.1 or I revert to 4.0.4. If all this will be for nothing, I will sell the phone!

On ICS you will get great battery life Telling from my experience as i have reverted back to ICS after trying JB and CM 10.1( both have very poor battery life ) . So instead of wasting time just flash ICS and forget about battery issue :good:
Where can I find a tutorial to revert to ICS?
Same question. Can some one please give a step by step guide on how to revert to ics for l9

Use the offline flash..
I also reverted to ICS and the battery drain keeps like a countdown
I have the p769, and I offline flashed up to V20D (and rooted). Removed some tmobile bloat, and I have pretty decent battery life. I guess I'm lucky.

Need help. Serious battery life issues..

Hi I have an Evo V 4g for virgin mobile and I've done s-off rooted and followed the "fix all problems turn your evo v into an evo 3d thread" and the flashed 3.17 harmonia. However my battery life is SO bad...if you look at my screenshot I am already down to 80ish % in 13 minutes. Just a little background, I'm not "new" to smartphones. I understand that I shouldn't have GPS on all the time or 4g or Bluetooth, screen on max brightness, etc. I have all my settings right. I also have juice defender ultimate on advanced. I don't know what could possibly make my battery drain that fast. For the 13 minutes that I used my phone, I had only sent a text message and received a <1 minute phone call..can anyone help me out here?

Im no expert, and that is pretty bad battery life. I would stay turn it off, take the battery out and then boot into recovery and wipe the battery stats. Mine isnt that bad of battery life, but I know doing them steps about every week or two sets my phone back straight.
