Question about ROM installs - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I've installed a bunch of different ROM's and was wondering if it's necessary to keep making backups every time I try a different ROM? Is the very first backup I made good enough, or should I do a backup every single time I try a new ROM?

Well u don't have to take backup of every rom. It's your choice but to keep a backup of the rom u'd want to go back to if anything goes wrong is handy

So the very first time I made a backup, it will always be saved right?

Yes, unless u delete it

Have you made a backup with the updated CWM v5.8. 2.0? The old version had a problem of backing up the boot.img properly so it may not be a bad idea to make a new backup anyway.

(TIP) How to uninstall a theme

As the general rule of thumb - you should always do a Nand backup before flashing anything and I assume you did.
After installed a theme and for some reason you found it doesn't suited your taste, you can uninstall it by go into recovery and restore your system instead of restoring the whole Nand backup or re-flashing.
Recovery/backup and restore/advance restore/(choose a Nand) and restore system
It save me some times and setup
is there another way. ?

I believe some roms have theme managers, but based on what we have so far I don't think so. Bytecode who makes custom roms for the Optimus One had a theme manager at one time, not sure how stable it was though.

Re-flash the original rom.
It's much faster and easier than restoring a backup because factor in the time it would take to actually produce the backup, flash the theme decide upon it and then restore.
Or you could just flash the theme, decide not to keep it and flash the rom. Voila, back to normal. I'll never understand why people like doing things the hard way.
How about creating a backup in Titanium of [Desktop] HTC Sense before theming and restoring it after? I've created that backup before when switching ROMs and it's restored it in original condition.

(Q) How can I backup a rom so I can easily just switch roms when i feel?

I am on the Oxygen rom and I want this as my main rom. For gaming I want to switch to CM7, then back to my Oxygen rom when im done. Is there an easy way to do this so I dont have to restore all my apps/settings every time I switch?

If you have installed ROM manager, you have an option of Backup current ROM. You can backup your current ROM through it and restore it whenever you want.
Press thanks if it helped.
Can I backup my oxygen rom, then the CM7 rom. And then choose which one I can to restore? Or can I only have one backup at a time

Backups rest on your sdcard, in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backups. So, the number of backups you can store at any time is limited by the current free space you have on your sdcard.
Also, you can't update existing backups, meaning for example if you currently have a backup of oxygen and are running it, you run it for a few days, install some new apps, change some settings, and then wish to switch to CM. You will have to delete your current oxygen backup and create a new one if you wish to have the changes persist the next time you feel the craving for oxygen.
Dude give a try to multirom best option for you.
You can switch ROM within 30 sec!!!

Caveats:
* baseband is not backed up, so if one requires new and one requires old you'd have to restore the backup and reflash appropriate baseband. Multi backups of ROMs that use the same baseband is easy and takes only a few mins.
* To continue what Mihir was saying, any given backup is a snapshot in time. If something happens after that backup it will not be reflected in that backup. You will be restored to the way it was when the backup was made. Easiest way around this is...
* get in the habit of making a backup anytime you boot to recovery. Only takes a couple of mins and can save much pain and applying the same updates over and over...
* backups are only named with a timestamp, not the name of the ROM. It can be difficult to remember what ROM a particular BU holds. I suggest renaming the backups with the name of the ROM asap after you reboot from any new backup/reflash.
Example:
2012-03-04.04.33.25 <-- as named by clockworkmod
2012-03-04.04.33.25-CM7
or
2012-03-04.04.33.25-oxygen
as appropriate.

It backs up everything, it will basically cryogenically freeze your version of Android as it is for later use. So yeah, if you don't like ROM x you restore ROM y from nandroid
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developer app
2. To remove root you need flash stock firmware (I think)

1. nandroid backup is backup everything
2. yes you can, if don't want that custom rom, just restore the nandroid backup you make
A NANDroid backup does not include the EFS, however, and you will want to back up that up in case your IMEI ends up getting lost. (Grab kTool from the Play Store)
Also not included in a NANDroid backup is the modem and kernel. These don't require you to back them up yourselves, as you can find stock kernels on the Internet (and modified ones) as well as the modems, but it's worth noting that some unofficial ROMs do tend to flash these as a part of their install process

Music to my ears :thumbup::thumbup:
I use Nandroid backup as a method to save all my folder and apps layout ,
flash a new rom just format cache and system .
That gives me my layout plus the new rom works 99% of the time if upgrading to similar roms even moving from LF2 to LG8 .

Nandroid backups your system data cache and boot partition this means after restore you will get everything same as old times but you can't go back from aosp roms because they use mtd partition type but samsung roms use bml you have to flash stock rom from odin and then restore when you want to come back from aosp/cm based roms

I tried that but it didn't work for me probably my fault. I was a galaxy s (I9000) user and it was needed to flash every time stock odin rom before restoring to samsung roms and I guessed its the same on s3.

same here, but seems to be different with the s3, but there might be some problem between different versions of cwm recovery, that might be the problem..if you backed up on touch say..then tried restoring from 5.c.x.x?

What exactly does backup do.

A few days ago i put on Siyah neweset 5.0.1 kernel on my S2 and overclocked but my performance hasn't increased much so i'm gonna put Ressurection Remix ROM now but the first step on the guide says to format my phone and i hate loseing my things, is there anyway to keep my stuff on the new ROM D: ? I'm not sure what to do QQ i don't wanna screw this up, also i'm gonna make a few backups, cuz 1 isn't enough.
Over clocking doesn't increase performance per se.
You can use titanium backup to backup and restore your current apps. Use SMS backup+ for your texts and call lists.
Images, vids, music etc are unaffected by formatting via CWM.

If you want to switch to another ROM, I guess it's best to backup all your apps via Titanium Backup. As far as I remember, the list displays white apps, red ones and green ones. The red ones are system apps and you should backup them since they differ from ROM to ROM. The white ones are apps which you have installed on your phone (via Google Play...). The green entries are things like "Messages" "Phone call history" and stuff like that.. I guess you can backup them too.
You won't loose your contacts as long as they are stored on your googlemail-account. So no need to safe them.
Then just backup your current ROM via ClockworkMod (I guess one backup is enough :b - If you want to be 100% sure try to backup and right after it finished try to restore the backup. If it works (in 99,9% of all cases) you can just flash your new ROM - if it didn't work try to backup+restore again. As soon as you've got a working backup (I guess the first backup will be OK), flash the new ROM and restore the needed apps via Titanium Backup again. (Just download Titanium Backup right after flashing RR and you will be able to restore every single app again).
More and more ROM devs advise not to restore apps via Titanium Backup, but it always worked fine for me
Hope I helped you,
experience7

You dont need to format everything to install a Custom Rom. Just wipe data, cache and Dalvik cache(under advanced).

Don't be ridiculous.
What about something simple like "How to backup data before installing new rom?"
In any case you should have searched google or XDA first as there is plenty of topics on how to flash roms without losing data or how to backup all your apps/appdata etc.

I can't find the button to change tittle, it must be hidden under 3 layers of bedrock.
Anyway, i've been useing this rom since yesterday, it's awesome .. mostly
Some minor disadvantages, some things like Clock crash, won't update some things but that's normal.
My stock benchmark was 6800, now 6200 D:
Probably becouse the rom uses more RAM than stock.. Overall 8.7/10 <3
I'll keep testin.
EDIT: OH YEA! what were those "modems" it asked me when i was installing it?

[Q] CMW blobs

hi guys,i have a simple question, afte searching of xda,i couldn't get a proper answer so i wish to start a topic.
i have blobs folder in CWM folder,it took about 1 Gig of space.if i delete this folder, does it make or damage the CWM?or the backups will be corrupt?kindly answer.thanks.
I believe they are part of a new CWM incremental backup method and should not be deleted. I did my first backup under that method today and you will notice if you look that the old locations of the backup is less then 20 mb.

All that a 'Son/son's of a human' can do is ask why u messed up with that blob folder in the first place.
if u really see that its aint needed for u any more, then its quite obvious that u arnt into restoring the old backup
In recovery there is an option to free unused backup data, which will detect back up data that isn't needed for old backups anymore. Personally though, I just changed the default backup type back to tar.
