'Unofficial tethering' on Verizon? - Motorola Droid X2

My internet is down for everyone in the country, they appear to have fallen off the grid. As such, I've decided to try tethering for the first time, and it works, but I'm reading all sorts of older messages online saying that Verizon will cancel my grandfathered unlimited data and sign me up for the tethering plan. Is that still going on or will they give me some sort of warning or something? I need to have internet right now so I'm risking it.

Are u against flashing cm7? If u do u may tether all u want...
Sent from my MB870 using XDA

I don't have time to read into that right now, I'm just wondering if I'm going to get switched over without warning by Verizon for using this app while I'm rooted... it's working fine, I just don't want any surprises.

When I was on stock rooted I used PDANET without any problems and i too have any unlimited grandfathered data plan. The app is available on the market.

Same here. I frequently use PDAnet where I can't get WiFi and have for the past two years including watching movies. No issues. There is a hide tether feature as well on the desktop app.

It should be the same as with the previous data plan. Im sure the workarounds still work. Try this app, I've been using it without issues: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ..
I'm about to try the wifi tether app, though I would make note to use https sites and avoid plain http as much as possible.

this would defeat my doubt about https (secure sites) but why do you say avoid plain http? T-mobile being able to detect if you are tethering where secure sites would be protected and no one can tell what you are doing?

Okay to answer all your questions.
1. It can access all sites.
2. Yes tmo apparently detect unpaid tethering via the pc useragent on http sites but since they pry into https as it is a secure protocol, they can't detect those but I just used all the various protocols without any issues.
3. Yes it works via the wifi tether app from the play store, it does work via the default tether app on some devices but the newer devices they set it to check your data plan for hotspot, but the wifi tether app gets around that and works fine and no I didn't modify anything, I'm on the stock apn, etc.
Yes I do have the true unlimited plan as well.

Actually everyone is doing crazy downloading, the thing about the wifi tether third party app is that it shows your device as being the user of the data and not it being tethered the way the on board hot spot option would, that's why I opt for the third party app than just a fix, that way they can't block your tethering since it's your device showing up on the network and not a pc, imo.

So today i set up the fix for tethering that hasoons posted but i did not use it. just set it up only. then right now that I am home from work I am tethering with to my laptop but using the mobile hotspot that comes with the phone. I have the nrg rom stock. I thought that if I used that stock tethering app it wouldnt work? this is weird...

Which tether app works for you? I tried many and doesn't work

I have AT&T Note with stock ICS (rooted of course). I tried many different tethering apps and so far none of them works. I have tried, for example,
- FoxFi
- Wifi Tether for rooted user 2.3-beta1
I tried to change the configuration, such as these:
- Change Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
- Change Setup Method: Netd (master) - DO NOT use Netd-ndc
The problem is that the tethering starts, other device (laptop, tablets, etc.) can see the hotspot network, but it's either:
- No traffic sent
- Network is slow, like 0.1Kbps
I know it's not the Note or the other devices connecting to it, because:
- When tethering is running (FoxFi, Wifi Tether, etc.) I can still browse the Internet from the Note (not from other device) just fine
- All the other devices (laptop, tablets) can connect to the Internet when connected to other Wifi (home network, Clear hotspot, etc.)
So which one works for you?
I'm non rooted ICS and FoxFi has always worked for me. Have you tried the new version? It limits how long free users can use the app (not sure how much) but it might be worth a shot...

Hello, go here: www.foxfi.com/bin
This will download the latest version of Foxfi to your Note. It does state that there are some limits to free usage but I don't know if that means it cuts you off after fifteen minutes or what. I also have a previous apk of Foxfi somewhere in my Note's download folder that doesn't mention a need to upgrade to the paid version.

I just freeze "Tether Manager" with TiBu and it works perfect..

Not that lucky; I had an unlimited plan too. AT&T began throttling after unlimited plans went over 3gb. I never did but I knew someone who was throttled. It took two minutes to open a text email.
Don't take this as criticism of AT&T, everyone throttles now except for Sprint. And I've had nothing but great experiences with their phone and data service, customer service, etc. I really like AT&T but didn't have a need for their unlimited plan anymore. I'd rather pay $10 if I go over 3gb than be throttled.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I've been throttled once, and it wasn't that bad - the speed would be normal for the first few moments of a connection and the slow down. So small data transfers were fine, but streaming video etc. was not.

Oh man! I just remembered my colleague was on T Mobile. That was insane, render your phone useless throttling. Good to know AT&T leaves some basic functions alone with its throttling. I may be in the minority but I really like AT&T and have always been well served by them.
While a part of me really dislikes the idea of throttling I can understand how some people killed it for us moderate users: another colleague of mine used to stream Netflix all the time, download torrent files and tether to his laptop constantly at home. One month he used more than 80GB.

It's actually 5GB for our LTE Notes. The older 3G plans are 3GB. Personally I don't want to pay another dime, and I rarely go over about 3.5-4GB/month, but the one time I did, I'm glad I still had data without having to pay another $10 just to get a few MB additional (I barely went over).

Hotspot Tether without root for unlimited Users

I am currently stuck on the update without root like many.. but the main reason I root is for tether for my unlimited account.. I downloaded and paid for foxfi (now also pdanet) and it obviously didn't work a few weeks back.. however a new update today and the wifi hotspot works.. creates a vpn to work, but I am currently on it now.. update says for the maxx hd and others doesn't list the dna but I can confirm it works.. maybe worth the 5 bucks to someone here. Just a heads up.. (created this account just for this thread, I usually only lurk)

Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I have the DNA, and an unlimited plan. By default, when you try to tether up it will tell you to call your carrier to subscribe. You can do it, but you need to be rooted. If you are rooted then install the Android Wifi Tether app from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Once you run the app use the following settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
Enable "WiFi-driver reload"
Enable "Routing fix"
This should get you up and going.
But we're not rooted. This is "tether without root" discussion. If you're rooted, sure, you can use wifi tether no problem. The problem is to tether without root.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
If you get the latest wireless tether beta from Google there is an option for non root tether. I haven't been able to test it because I'm rooted but someone should try it.

From what I have read is that they can cancel your unlimited data if you are negatively effecting others experience.
Which can mean what ever they want it to really, but also you have the unlimited data to do as you please as long as

So I really don't know on this topic.

Mobile Hotspot

Ok so the last time Ive worried about tethering without having root (it's been a while!) all the carriers were charging for you to use your phone as a hotspot (extra monthly fee). I have always rooted, didnt abuse the privilege, and never had any issues.
I have vzw unlimited data and just paid retail for this S4, replacing my GNex. I see there is a "Mobile Hotspot" app, either from Samsung or Verizon. I launched it to look at the config and didnt see any warnings (about extra fees, etc). Does Verizon not charge for tethering, or is this an exclusive GS4 freebie? Or when I start using it to tether my tablet and laptop am I going to start getting charged some stupid hotspot/tethering fee?

If you try to use that app it'll say you're not subscribed. Go to the market and download a widget capable of switching the tether switch. This back door toggle will bypass the provisioning and your device will tether using the built in tether (better IMO) feature....and you want be charged.
This loophole has worked on the S3 and N2 as well.

Wifi Tether works great for me and lets me see how much data I'm actually burning through. I'm using the one w/ the Synergy ROM, TrevE Mod.
The built in tethering only works if you are on a share data plan. If you are on an unlimited, you can't use it without paying extra. However FoxFi works WITHOUT root on the S4. I have yet to root because my wifi passwords all back up to google now, and I could care less about my angry birds data as I don't play it anymore. Tethering was really my only reason for rooting this and since foxfi works with no charge and no root, I haven't rooted. I don't use windows so until I NEED to root, I'm not going to try to get one.
Anyone know of any hotspot apps? I got pda and it doesn't work it keeps saying I am not subscribed to a hotspot service through sprint....I used to use easy tether and that worked great (had a custom prl) but it doesn't seem to be working on my s4

either "one click tether" or "power toggles" or just any wireless tether widget works.
I am still on unlimited so the FCC ruled free tether does not apply, so when it prompts to go to Verizon or cancel just hit the home button and wireless tether stays on. :good: While its on you can still go into the settings and set up WEP security passwords.
Works like a charm.

i just updated to the newest update to be able to move data to the sd card. so far so good EXCEPT I LOST MY WIFI ABILITY!!!
freaking verizon.
i have a stock S4 and haven't rooted it......yet. i have the unlimited data plan and was able to use the wifi hotspot with fox fi and other apps, but now since the update it checks to verify i have the wifi service.
i am not opposed to rooting my phone if that will get me wifi again, i would just prefer not to.
any ideas how to restore the wifi ability with a verizon S4? i have tried svtp, foxfi, and portable wifi hotspot with no luck.

i guess i thought that meant it you had your phone physically tethered to a laptop or what ever you wanted internet on.
i some how missed the "wireless" part of that statement.

You're going to be even more disappointed to find out that you updated because you misunderstood what the update actually does.

It does not sane you any appreciable space. You indicated that the apps to sd feature was the motivation for upgrading. It merely moves the apk files to ext sd. App data stays in place on the internal memory.

I am rooted with the Motochopper work around. I downloaded an ota (I knew better but...). Fortunately, thanks to the good folks at XDA I was able to freeze the ota in its tracks.
Anyway, my favorite wifi apk is Portable Wifi Tether. I am unlimited w Verizon.

I was able to get PDA net to work. The hotspot wasn't working and I used one of the mods here for native hotspot now both the native hotspot and planet are working flawlessly.
I was afraid I was going to loose my expanded mini menu.
