My internet is down for everyone in the country, they appear to have fallen off the grid. As such, I've decided to try tethering for the first time, and it works, but I'm reading all sorts of older messages online saying that Verizon will cancel my grandfathered unlimited data and sign me up for the tethering plan. Is that still going on or will they give me some sort of warning or something? I need to have internet right now so I'm risking it.
Are u against flashing cm7? If u do u may tether all u want...

I don't have time to read into that right now, I'm just wondering if I'm going to get switched over without warning by Verizon for using this app while I'm rooted... it's working fine, I just don't want any surprises.
When I was on stock rooted I used PDANET without any problems and i too have any unlimited grandfathered data plan. The app is available on the market.

Wondering if there is any way around tethering and data charges, will be in a hotel for a week and don't care to pay for the internet there. Thinking about trying pdanet.
Will Verizon notice?
tether at your own risk, but chances are verizon will not notice.
Why not use wifi tether ? And there's almost no chance Verizon will notice.
If you're rooted use the latest version of Wireless Tether, if not, ClockWorkMod USB tether is cheap and works on non rooted phones.
Assuming you don't go over your data cap if you have one, you'll be fine. I tether and watch hd netflix on my Xbox all the time

I stayed at a Marriott when I was on a business trip (we had the event at the hotel), although we (my company employees) had gotten a free access code, the hotel charged everyone else $10 every 24 hours.
edit: Of course I ended up tethering to my phone anyways at night due to the fact the Internet connection ended up being overloaded. haa
Also just realized you added the "especially for work usually offers free or none at all." bit.

I believe that the data plan does not matter; it is whether you are on 4g or not. When Verizon bought the spectrum for its 4g service it was agreed to not restrict user use of their devices.
The FCC specifically left out the part about unlimited data in their ruling.
And you would be surprised at how many hotels charge for internet access still. I've practically lived out of a suitcase for the past 2 months and had at least 4 or 5 hotels still wanting to charge me for internet access. Or the free access was so miss poor that I ended up tethering anyway.

I have AT&T Note with stock ICS (rooted of course). I tried many different tethering apps and so far none of them works. I have tried, for example,
- FoxFi
- Wifi Tether for rooted user 2.3-beta1
I tried to change the configuration, such as these:
- Change Device Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
- Change Setup Method: Netd (master) - DO NOT use Netd-ndc
The problem is that the tethering starts, other device (laptop, tablets, etc.) can see the hotspot network, but it's either:
- No traffic sent
- Network is slow, like 0.1Kbps
I know it's not the Note or the other devices connecting to it, because:
- When tethering is running (FoxFi, Wifi Tether, etc.) I can still browse the Internet from the Note (not from other device) just fine
- All the other devices (laptop, tablets) can connect to the Internet when connected to other Wifi (home network, Clear hotspot, etc.)
So which one works for you?
I'm non rooted ICS and FoxFi has always worked for me. Have you tried the new version? It limits how long free users can use the app (not sure how much) but it might be worth a shot...

Hello, go here: www.foxfi.com/bin
This will download the latest version of Foxfi to your Note. It does state that there are some limits to free usage but I don't know if that means it cuts you off after fifteen minutes or what. I also have a previous apk of Foxfi somewhere in my Note's download folder that doesn't mention a need to upgrade to the paid version.

Not that lucky; I had an unlimited plan too. AT&T began throttling after unlimited plans went over 3gb. I never did but I knew someone who was throttled. It took two minutes to open a text email.
Don't take this as criticism of AT&T, everyone throttles now except for Sprint. And I've had nothing but great experiences with their phone and data service, customer service, etc. I really like AT&T but didn't have a need for their unlimited plan anymore. I'd rather pay $10 if I go over 3gb than be throttled.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I've been throttled once, and it wasn't that bad - the speed would be normal for the first few moments of a connection and the slow down. So small data transfers were fine, but streaming video etc. was not.

Oh man! I just remembered my colleague was on T Mobile. That was insane, render your phone useless throttling. Good to know AT&T leaves some basic functions alone with its throttling. I may be in the minority but I really like AT&T and have always been well served by them.
While a part of me really dislikes the idea of throttling I can understand how some people killed it for us moderate users: another colleague of mine used to stream Netflix all the time, download torrent files and tether to his laptop constantly at home. One month he used more than 80GB.

It's actually 5GB for our LTE Notes. The older 3G plans are 3GB. Personally I don't want to pay another dime, and I rarely go over about 3.5-4GB/month, but the one time I did, I'm glad I still had data without having to pay another $10 just to get a few MB additional (I barely went over).

Pretty sure 3rd party tethering apps are not allowed. They want you to pay the additional fee for tethering. If they catch you they I'm sure could terminate your account. Never heard of it happening though.

Terminate your account, call due your etfs, and send your a ginormous data bill would be the worst case scenario.
Chances are terminating your account would also blacklist you from reinstating it....ever.

The FCC ruling does not include grandfathered plans.
The ruling is almost entirely about tethering apps, not service. Verizon gets through on a loophole due to CDMA being included in a lot of this stuff. Try to take them to court on it, I dare ya

Right, but never have is not synonymous with never will.
From what I read, OP just wanted a worse case scenario sort of response.
None of us can rightfully tell the guy that he cannot be punished for unauthorized tethering.
We have an awesome Verizon corporate rep. It is a great looking chic and she is cool as hell.
I asked her about this one time and about things like using a ton of data with my slingbox etc. She actually walked in while I was using my Slingbox and asked me how it worked.
She could care less what I do, but she did advise me not to go absolutely crazy with the data use as things like Slingbox that are unsupported and third party tethering are TOS violations and you may endanger your unlimited data package (something I have been really careful not to do)
She said as long as you use a reasonable amount of data VZ won't care, but the DBs that use 150 gigs a month and then brag about it on sites like this are definitely pressing their luck IMHO.

If you use a 3rd party app or hack the stock tethering you should be fine as long as you don't go crazy tethering. You'd most likely not be content with a home network tethered from your phone. Verizon will throttle your data to crippling speeds if you consistently used a large amount of data.

Only if its 3g data, they don't throttle 4g.
I do agree it's not the worlds best idea to run your entire home internet by tethering however.
I would never do that (i use roadrunner) and sooner or later I firmly believe verizon will discontinue unlimited data for everyone anyway.
They won't charge you anything. They will simply put a block on your tethering and nothing else.

Care to share an article?
In the days of the Droid X, there was a simple hack to remove throttling. In everything I've read currently, the throttle is done at the network level, not from the device. I don't see why they'd throttle 3G and not 4G (LTE).

Wifi Tether works great for me and lets me see how much data I'm actually burning through. I'm using the one w/ the Synergy ROM, TrevE Mod.
The built in tethering only works if you are on a share data plan. If you are on an unlimited, you can't use it without paying extra. However FoxFi works WITHOUT root on the S4. I have yet to root because my wifi passwords all back up to google now, and I could care less about my angry birds data as I don't play it anymore. Tethering was really my only reason for rooting this and since foxfi works with no charge and no root, I haven't rooted. I don't use windows so until I NEED to root, I'm not going to try to get one.

either "one click tether" or "power toggles" or just any wireless tether widget works.
I am still on unlimited so the FCC ruled free tether does not apply, so when it prompts to go to Verizon or cancel just hit the home button and wireless tether stays on. :good: While its on you can still go into the settings and set up WEP security passwords.
