How to improve battery life guide for dummies - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

NEEDS ROOT!
With root explorer (or similiar apps) let's go in /system/app and rename the file "phone.apk" into "phone.apk.bak"
Now reboot G70 to stop the annoying popup about phone.apk crashing.
Enjoy longer battery life!

cause you stop an always running process that drains battery, an unnecessary process, g70 is not a phone!
I've tested it on g70 and a wifi tablet and battery life is improved.
It's a reversible process, just rename the file again.
Just test it, no risk!

Rather than renaming the file you can just "freeze" it with system tuner pro.

Hey this leads to defection of the stock camera app. When I did this namechange to phone.apk.bak, the stock camera didn't respond and the camera view was totally black, like it was pointing towards something black (or too close to an object)
So re-renamed the phone.app.bak to phone.apk and now the camera works again.

i'm not sure system tuner pro works with phone apk, autostarts doesn't work with this file.

you're right, i use camera zoom fx

Me too, but the video doesn't work as well then :S

I'm having a similar issue with removing the phone.apk file breaking the stock camera app.
I used Titanium Backup to remove the phone.apk a long time ago. Normally I use Camera Zoom FX, so I didn't notice that there was a problem until I tried to use it to take some video recently.
I would like to restore phone.apk, but it looks like I must have deleted my backup...Yes, I am an idiot!
Does anyone have a download link for the phone.apk file? Am I screwed? I only record video once in a blue moon, but I would like to have that functionality back.
I am using a Galaxy Player 4.0 US YP-G1CWY/XAA
Thanks!

Try checking Flight Mode (Airplane Mode) in wireless settings. In most systems this shuts down the the phone.apk.

Why do this?Just use a battery saver and set data connection to zero...

[Q] Eclipse ROM 1.2 Looking for previous stock camera

The recent camera is unatractive and doesn't even have an option to make your pictures widescreen. I've tried all settings. Also, I need the shutter noise fx off etc. Just needing advice on how to completely delete/remove the camera off of 1.2 away and get back to the stock camera. Much obvliged guys, thanks. This rom is running flawless on my X2 btw! +1

You will not get blur camera to work. He has modified the system too much and blur camera is dependent on alot of framework. Next eclipse release is going to have the bionic camera.

I'm having no problem using the Blur Camera. I'm using the one from the Liberty ROM, works fine. Only thing is that it doesn't work with the gallery.

Yes blur camera WILL work.
Ho grab the one from the second.post in moto Ginger funk rom. U will need to go into the zip and push the apk to system/app. I don't think flashing it over eclipse will work.
U just won't be able to get to the aosp gallery from the preview picture button inside the camera app.

Thanks, asch and RyanThaDude!
Last time I tried to push the blur camera into eclipse, I got the same results as EvilTim and nothing worked. Countess adbs and chmods later all I got was nothin' or FCs....
So, I took the blur camera from LibertyX2-RC1.zip, dropped it into one of the numerous flash-a-theme zip via BSR files floating around, and it worked! No more adb pushing, su'ing, deleting. copying, etc. File attached.

I had the FC problems only when I tried to use the blur_camera.apk I saved/copied from stock rooted. I believe the problems came from the apk NOT being deodexed and I didn't bring the .odex file also.
Sounds like the same issue I had until pulling the deodexed one from the motogingerfunk add-on
And u could have prolly just pushed the apk to system/app change permissions to rw-r--r-- and reboot.

Yes, you are right... did the push & chmod dance too many times in previous versions of eclipse and blur camera I had to try something new.
pulled these APKs from liberty-31. they are the Blur camera and hacked preview gallery. This will give you the stock camera w/ ability to preview pics, but still keep one gallery, the 3d AOSP one, on your app tray. just unzip, copy to your /system/app/ folder and correct permissions. simple as that, and you get the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the zip, but gallery won't open with it from the camera... So I want to get rid of it and just use the Eclipse one. Now I have two, how do I remove a flashed zip? I can't simply uninstall it...
Reason for wanting a seam lined camera that boots quick is because I'm ALWAYS taking pictures and even have it load up from widgetlocker and need it to boot fast like the stock one (bought camera360 and vignette, amazing but too slow booting and takes forever to process the image). Thanks guys.

I have both an having the blur camera alongside doesn't hurt AFAIK. I dragged both icons (eclipse camera and blur camera) to my homescreen but eventually deleted the eclipse icon and kept the blur camera icon. But if you really want to delete the blur apk from your system/app then you can use root explorer, or adb shell and mount -o remount rw /system then just delete blurcamera.apk manually.
[I must be one of the few who use QuickPic instead of Gallery.]
Or maybe the next version Bionic camera will be so awesome, no need to push blurcamera.

What I would like to know is how fast u mean when u say it opens quick. My stock camera takes up to 5seconds or more. Feels like forever lol.
Or do u mean eclipse stock?

For example if I witness something and need a picture FAST, I would launch my camera from my lock screen and it would be ready almost instantly. 5 seconds seems too slow, your ram free enough?
This isn't a problem in any eclipse rom, I just liked the eclipse cam "interface" on 1.1 better and it allowed me to adjust to widescreen pictures...
Thanx Mr. Greenjeans, I did the quick download everything works good. Thanx nitro. For a great rom.

Hey, I'm wondering if you've find a way to modify the birghtness on the camera? I'm currently using energy rom too and it'd be great to be able to edit the brightness on the camera (instead of the full birghtness).

Or you can pull the camera.apk out of the rom with the brightness you want it set at.. and put it in /system/app then reboot. problem solved.
I'm pretty sure it isn't the apk itself tho, if you download the HQ camera mod, you will see it has camera profiles, I think if you modify a value in one of those files, that is what will accomplish what you want.
Do not be afraid to do it yourself, if it doesn't work or you have issues, you just reflash the rom without wiping, or reflash the mod. Either will take you back to whatever you had before.
But like I said, I am pretty sure it isn't compiled into the APK itself.

So, I just changed from energy rom to speed rom and the camera seems to have brightness in auto mode (or it just follow my current brightness setting) instead of a certain value...
If you think I can just edit the camera.apk, can I just grab the camera.apk from speed rom and push it to energy rom? Will that work?

ICS Camera

This is not really a question, but more of a suggestion for those who can't stand to use the current Camera on Liquid and Jesters Roms. Personally, I take a lot of pictures with my phone and the quality from that APK was quite bad when it was dark compared to what it was.
So after a lot of research, here's what I did:
Downloaded Root Explorer from the Google Play.
Browsed to system/app
Mount R/W and deleted Camera.apk
Downloaded this camera apk from MIUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15307536&postcount=167
Installed it and voila - working camera with focus.
Note: Camcorder still doesn't work
I'm not sure if it's required to uninstall the Camera.apk (chances are no), however it's what I done.
think this may work with AOKP?

You mean it shows the controls, but a blank screen right? You have to take one picture like that, and after that it displays the screen and it works fine. You'll have to do that each time you start up the app unfortunately, but still it's better than crap quality and no focus.

Sony's Powersave App for your ICS

Miss the powersaver app from 2.3? Me too, it had SO many more features than the 'extended battery mode' on ICS.
I put the app in system/app so that it will start with the phone (and changed the permissions) - if you just install it, if you restart the phone or touch extended battery mode then the powersave app disappears.
Any ideas or comments on this?
p.s. I just noticed that if you put the 2.3 Powersaver app in system/app with the correct permissions, then you can use this app WITH the 4.0 Extended Battery Mode app. So the 4.0 app will turn off data and wifi when the screen is off for a few mintues AND with the 2.3 app you can click turn on battery save mode when battery is less than 30% for example. Now this is proper battery management that we badly needed...
IMAGE: this is the normal 2.3 stock powersaver app, it's not new, but I notice it was not included in some of the 2012 ICS upgrades.
P.S. The com.sonyericsson files are only for Xperia S users that want to try to get it working. For all other Sony 2012 phones, you only need the powersaver app!!

I've been testing the extended battery mode of ICS with powersaver of Gingerbread and I think combined they help make the phone's battery usable again. Before now I was struggling to get through a full day with this phone. :victory:

Hmm If I understand, you have the Xperia S on stock ICS, you have the usual Powersaver app and no Extended battery option in the power management menu? That's interesting ... on the Sola ICS, the Powersaver app was removed, and instead we have the 'extended battery' option which says it does two things only: turn off data and wifi when the screen is off for a few minutes.
Why they don't put both in the all the ICS software, I don't know. Combined, the two features work really well for me on my Sola. :victory:
You understand correctly!

I have a kind of a n00b question/problem here, hope you can give me some advice!
My phone:
Sony Xperia Go ST27i
Android release: 4.0.4 ICS
I've installed the power save app, but when I cycle the power off/on, the app disappears again. I guess this is most likely caused by the app isn't located in the "system/app" folder. I've tried to copy the installer into the system/app folder (using Total Commander), but I get an error message: "Error writing to target file! /system/app/SemcPowerSaver.apk!".
I would guess that this has something to do with permissions. I haven't rooted my device and I was wondering if this is required to get the app correctly installed? I've tried to change permissions both for the installer and the system/app directory, but in both cases I receive an error message. In the installer case it says something like: "...Operation not permitted - su call failed!" and in the system/app case: "... Read-only file system - su call failed!".
How do I get passed this point? Is rooting the only option and if this is the case, how do I do that or get started?
Another thing is, that the timed profile doesn't work always, but that's another problem... Let's go for one solution at a time!
I miss the power save app badly and it worked so well on GingerBread...
In advance, thank you!
Don't worry, in a thread that I set up, there is no such thing as noob questions! You can ask anything you like! :victory:
Yes that happened to me until I put the app in system/app. I think it might be a matter of root, yes. I think the only solution is to use root permissions. I noticed the app didn't work for me or disappeared after a reboot until I used the correct root permissions. Someone else might have a better idea, but that's as much as I know!
P.s. this app used with the 'power managment' in ICS is a great combination for boosting the battery life I find. I just don't know why Sony didn't leave this cool app in the upgrade! :good:
"Extended Standby Mode" is available in Xperia P ICS under Setting-> Power Management.
but i don't use it as it will disable wifi and data traffic so i won't be able to get messges through Watsapp.

You are on ICS, right? Because this method only works for ICS!
You can get root via this thread (developed by Binary):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
You download a tiny file, I would put it on your desktop and extract the files (but keep for another time, e.g. if you restore your phone).
You need to do 3 things on your phone before you begin; go to settings/security and click on Unknown sources, then go to
settings/developer options and click on USB debugging, and finally, go to settings/xperia/connectivity and switch the USB connection mode to MSM.
Now click on the Run Me file that was extracted and click 1 when the black screen appears. About 10 seconds later the app Backup and Restore will appear and you click on the restore of 'root me' and your phone will reset, and be rooted!
It can sound tricky before you've done it, but once you've done it it's easy! :good:
Maybe you mean root access via an app? You need a file explorer like Astro Manager or ES File Explorer. Go to the settings of either app and make sure that root settings are all ticked, allowing you to modify things in your phone.
It doesn't work like how it works in gingerbread. When you turn on the low power saver, you are unable to turn on the power saver.

[mod]Kill the Shuttersound

Hey guys,
there is this annoying thing with the RAZR HD, the shutter Sound.
You cant turn it off, you cant silence it and stuff.
I googled a little and found out that if you are rooted, it is quiet easy to turn of that annoying noise.
Just Download a root file manager
then go to /system/media/audio/ui
mount your system as read/write
then simply rename the file Camera_click.ogg to camera_click.ogg.bak
Thats it, you will never hear that sound again, unless you rename the file back to camera_click.ogg
so enjoy and have fun with your silenced camera
Greetz Esok

Yap you're Right, it is illegal to disable the shutter sound on phone cameras in some countries. Some countries even demand that the shutter sound gotta have some minimum decibel determined by law.
I don't got the country list. but i think u can find that by googling it.
The disable is on my phone.
Also if you turn your volume down, the shutter sound goes down with overall phone volume.
mute the phone and the shutter sound is also muted.
I did that a few weeks ago. After that taking photos takes a lot more of time and the photos weren't pushed to the little gallery screen (in the right, top of the screen).

try not just to rename Camera_click.ogg but make the file with same name and silence inside.
Another option is too simply install another camera app. I don't intend to promote a specific app but I have recently installed jb camera+ and been quite happy. Probably other apps are just as good.
2 things I have noticed: much improved image quality (less noise ) and the option to silence the shutter! Try out the free ics app or similar and compare image quality to motos app. I was a bit surprised to see the difference. My phone is not rooted btw.

Found that line in the Build.prop too, tried to edit it via regular texteditor, saved, but nothing has changed.
After a reboot the build.prop was the same as before, and there was no 0 in forceShutterSound

That happens if the build.prop wasn't saved properly. What I usually do is pull the file to my PC to edit and then overwrite it

Do I need root to write changed file build.prop into system dir?
When I tried the adb answered "failed to copy 'build.pro' to '/system/build.prop': Read-only file-system
Update: yes, now I'm quite sure that I need root
BTW, Camera JB+ app works well for me and shuttersound could be switched off without any problems. I have RAZR HD Germany version.
camera_click.ogg and camera_focus.ogg deleted, thanks for the tips I use a CM10 ROM.
thanks!
