[Q] How does someone outside US watch Hulu and HBO? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello:
I live in Canada and don't get to enjoy the Hulu and HBO Go goodness. Total bummer. I would like to use my TF201 to watch this content - not desktop. It appears there are apps for PCs that do something with VPN or IP spoofing. But what options are available to Prime owners? I have DD-WRT flashed on my router so that might open some doors I'm not aware of.
Thanks.

I'm also in the same boat, if you get a good answer, would you pm me? Also if there is a solution I would suggest making the thread a sticky since there are probably lots of other Canadians looking for the same solution....

I use unblock-us here in europe with out any problem
Enviado desde mi GT-I9000 usando Tapatalk

You could utilize the combination of http://www.cryptocloud.com and VPN on your transformer prime. Same as with a PC.
Other than that, probably some other apps out there that have the content. Hulu is pretty strict though, so VPN is probably the best option when you are out of the US.

Does HBO Go work without subscription?

DroidVPN works for US sites. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aed.droidvpn
It might onlybe a free trial though. Best setup would be VPN from router, no?

Catch-22.
If I use VPN for US websites, does that also prevent me from downloading torrents at the same time? That would suck.

I use unblock-us. It works great. I used to use VPN but it definitely slows you down. Because unblock-us just does DNS redirection, it runs at the full speed of your Internet connection. I'm not sure about HBO-Go, but unblock-us has a free trial so you can find out for yourself.

I have been using Unotelly for months and its an excellent service, I paid $19.99 for Gold Package 90 days and I can access netflix usa from uk, hulu from my PS3, PC, PRIME and Apple TV.
I would have posted the link but I can't as I have made less than 8 posts (stupid forum rule).
Just search for Unotelly in google.

Thanks. If I setup VPN in my router settings, do I have to make same changes to PC and Prime? Or will the router changes work for all?

Have you tried:
Orbot : tor proxy for andoid
Orbot offers three interfaces into the Tor network:
SOCKS 4A/5 proxy 127.0.0.1:9050
HTTP proxy 127.0.0.1:8118
Transparent proxying (on select devices)
More info:

Its free..

What are you using to watch Hulu?
I get an unsupported device error from the app on my tf201.

I guess I should have mentioned router too. I flashed DD-WRT recently and thought I could do one master VPN setup from there. However, the Prime doesn't allow for dynamic DNS, if I'm using static local IPs. So VPN must be setup on Prime as well, but router VPN should work with windows desktop if set to assign dynamic IP from router. Does that make sense?
Thanks

unblock-us uses some DNS tricks to get you access to US and UK content. I just set up my router to use the unblock-us DNS server and that propagates to all the devices in my home.
Away from home, I use DNS Changer to switch the DNS to unblock-us.

When looking at VPN services you are bets off finding one that works at high speed so buffering is never an issue
Ive been using VPN Supplier (vpnsupplier com) past few months, seems to be fast enough.

[Q] stock vpn connection bug?

Has anyone successfully made a VPN connection with their rezound? I am trying to connect to a VPN connection known to be working and it says its connected, but I am unable to get internet traffic to go through. (I.e. when I am connected to the VPN, Any app that uses data is unable to find a connection to the internet.) I know it's not on the VPN server side because I am able to connect and get data with another phone.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!
BUMP. no one has tried or can try out VPN for me?
Bump. Not to sound whiney, and but I find it sad that my post can be up for so long without even a single reply. There is a ton of good info in these forums and I'm patiently waiting for s-off just like the average member, but the issue of the vpn hasn't even been looked into by anyone else? I guess my question to any mods would be "what do I have to do to get some attention to an issue I'm having? "

you are so active on the forums, I can't believe your question hasn't been answered yet...
sorry, don't have anything to hide, so don't use vpn.
Why would you need to use a VPN on a phone lol? If you're using free wireless tethering I really doubt that it'll mask it for you. Verizon would be like zomg in Russia wireless tethering steals you!

First of all, thank you both so much for the replies.
I'm not sure that I follow that last sentence, but but to answer the first question.... I want to use the vpn to encrypt my data. I don't use tethering that often, so I don't want to pay for the hotspot fee..... And I don't want to risk Verizon messing with or possibly closing my account or charging me a fee.... So I'd like to run my tethering data though my personal vpn.
I am able to use the stock VPN to connect to my networks. I have about 25 different VPN connections and my VPN connections are the L2TP/IPSEC PSK type. I can mount shares, as well as using remote control programs.
I would look at the logs of the device that you are trying to connect to, maybe that might give you some hints as to the issue. One thing I did find it that my device does not see the DNS server for some reason (even though it is specified), so therefore I have to use IP addresses to connect to anything.
This probably doesn't help you too much, but I did want to reply to let you know that I have the stock VPN working.
Good luck!

Wow! Thank you! It's so good to know that someone has a version of the stock vpn working. Mine are the PPTP type. I wonder if this phone has issues with that setup. Could you possibly test a PPTP connection?
Sorry, I'd love to be able to help you test but all of the device's that I connect to use only the L2TP/IPSEC PSK VPN. Good luck solving your problem and have a happy holiday!
Well I just wanted to update this thread. It looks like PPTP VPN is broken in stock android and therefore it's not specific to the rezound. It looks like it can be fixed by developers (and from what I've read) it's pretty common for it to be fixed in non-stock roms. The lack of internet/browsing is caused by a bug in the MPPE (Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption) implementation. The following article explains it pretty well:
http://www.securitykiss.com/resources/articles/android_vpn_bug/index.php
This thread discusses some workarounds that were a bit over my head:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4706
IPsec connections are not affected....and it looks like MPPE connections have been fixed in ICS. If any developers could take a look at the above thread and explain in more basic english how to "fix" the connections that would be greatly appreciated. If not, i guess i'll have to wait and hope ICS fixes it.

I'm having the same issues as you are. I know I'm replying a month late, but I didn't get my phone setup until almost Dec 30th and have been fighting my corp VPN ever since.
Once in a while I can get ping to work from Better Android Terminal, but that is always short lived and I can never get anything to work from other apps.
I'm glad you found the issue. I took a look at logcat and it is definitely a kernel issue. When the connection starts, I get the message "couldn't set tty to ppp discipline".

Is there an app for android like connectify?

I need to do the same thing i do with connectify but in my phone, i connect to the web with my wifi and share internet with the same wifi adapter.
i been looking into it for a while and people keep on say that i need 2 widi adapter for it but is SO no true coz i have and use only 1... I don't wanna use bluetooth at all or connect it with usb.
If anybody knows of an app that does this magic please let me know.

Thanks for the reply.
I havent find a tethering app that let me share my wifi connection over the same wifi adapter.
I am not looking to share my data plan by the way, Connectify work as a wifi repeater, so you log in to a wifi and the software let you share that same connection any way you like even simultaneously over the same wifi adapter.
I'm sure you have good reasoning, but why don't you connect the other device directly to the same wifi your phone is connecting to? are you trying to use your phone as a range extender?
If that is all you are doing, seems to me to be a waste of a good device.
You could go to dd-wrt.com, find the list of supported routers, then buy a cheap router that is supported and then flash that firmware. Then set up as needed.
I have been using that for years, except in wireless bridge mode.

I know this thread is super old...
one reason i have is open routers that need a login after connection. I have yet to get a repeater to work with one of these networks but connectify works as you connect your computer say yes i accept and then start sharing it.

You mentioned that the WIFI Repeaters donot work with Open Networks. Are you talking about "Wireless Repeaters and Range Extenders"? such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SQvaGEKOxc
fqrouter2 is the solution
Use fqrouter2 for rooted Android devices and you have a perfectly working WiFi Repeater (available free in Google Play Store)

Hello npg500, I installed the app you suggested but i am not satisfoed with it.
fqrouter doesnot "externds the range" of the WIFI. it just routes the internet connection though the Android phone it runs on (possibly by the MITM), keeping the routed device on the same network as it was before. i installed fqrouter to increase the signal strength from my Basement wifi. but no success. it shows my PC in the Scan area. but as mentioned it doesn't extends the Range.
Anynody having any idea what App can serve that functionality? Or Am I doing something wrong somewhere?
Anyone can suggest how to work this wifi repeater or extender mode on S5?
fqrouter is saying wifi is not supported on S5 but it does have MITM

Internet working with browser, but not with apps

Hi Guys,
I have 3 android devices (xperia s, htc one x and a galaxy s3) connected to a wifi network. This is kind of a protected network and there is a firewall involved. Also the devices are getting IP via DHCP. The problem is that i am able to access web site via browser but when i try from the application, its showing i don't have internet connection. There is no proxy configured in this network. There is an IP filtering in the router which filters the IPs starting with a particular series. But the web site and the application which i am trying to use are supposed to use this IP series.
I've come across issues with internet connections on mobile devices. This might not work for you, but it has worked for me in the past.
I assume your devices detect all of the settings you need automatically?
If so, you may need to manually change some things.
1) Check your IP and make sure it's set right for your network
2) Check your DNS settings. Sometimes the default ones don't work properly.
Try:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
These are from Google's OpenDNS and have served me well in the past.
If all else fails, check the network itself.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply.. but as i mentioned earlier, the device is getting IP and other stuffs via DHCP. I am not allowed to configure something statically. It has to come via DHCP. But the interesting fact is that an iPAD in the same network is able to get internet in both browser as well as applications.
Hey, if you need to get settings via DHCP then you should talk to your network admin for the settings

I am getting all the settings perfectly.. hope haven't read my first post.. i am able to browse via browser.. the problem is with the apps.. that y am confused about.. i know this kind of a problem may arise when we have a proxy configured in the network.. but we dont have a proxy in the network.. in fact an ipad hooked up to the same network works totally fine..
Did you get your apps working?
Nope..still facing the same issue.. internet is available in browser. but not in the apps..
There is no problem with your phone. I am sure that changing your router will fix this problem. Try another router with your internet connection and tell me if that worked.
Press thanks if I helped you!
We have tried that as well.. The situation got little worse with the new router. Now Internet is not working with ipad as well. But it's working in browser for both ipad and android. Another thing I have observed is that the Web pages load blazing fast in a windows and blackberry but the same site loads very slow in android and ios. As I mentioned earlier, the network is having a high security with firewall and encryption. Is there any limitations for android and ios to work with these kind of highly secure network??

Hi - I was experiencing this on a Galaxy Nexus with no SIM card only connected to WiFi - on a WiFi router that used to work.
The solution was to
1. Open up DHCP settings on the phone (Settings -> WiFi -> My Network -> Advanced)
2. Manually set them to something that's wrong.
3. Save.
4. Set DHCP back to what it was.
5. Save.
May not work for you, but for me, after about 30 seconds the app store and other apps started working again without having to do a factory reset or doing anything to my router/network.
Let me know if this helped!

Yes, you need a PC running all the time as a VPN server. PPTP is the most easiest to get it working but it's blocked by companies all the time so you will never able to connect from your office to home. I use OpenVPN where it supports encryption and you can configure the port you like to use but not just PPTP. Using 443 or any other secured ports are preferred.
Here is a good guide I found to setup OpenVPN.

Correct, the idea is to VPN from your phone back to your home PC to make your phone or the FIOS Mobile app think you are still at home. That's why you need VPN.
You need:
1. Port forwarding from your router to your PC running OpenVPN as VPN server.
2. OpenVPN app installed on your phone.
3. FIOS Mobile app
4. VPN from your phone back to your home, redirect all traffic back to home and obtain an IP from your home.
5. Run FIOS Mobile app. If VPN is working properly, you will see all available live channels, if not, you will only see a few one and there is a warning message telling you that you can view more channels at home.
That's it and enjoy your TV anywhere.
PPTP is much easier because by default it routes all traffic back to your home and the FIOS Mobile app should work fine.

Check Windows Firewall service if it's running as well. Also a quick note to that PPTP uses IP protocol 47 (GRE) as well. Just opening port 1723 will not be enough. GRE is not tcp/udp but it's an IP protocol. Just FYI.
Windows Vista supports PPTP server as well.

I have Verizon FIOS router as well and it's a pretty old one.
It should be at Firewall Settings --> Port Forwarding --> Find or type the IP of your PC and select "Application to forward" --> pick PPTP
Save, and you should see a rule something like this.
PPTP

Thanks! I am finally able to connect to the VPN! The only problem now is that even though I'm connect to it I can not access the internet at all from my phone when its connect to the VPN server. It shows on windows that I'm connect to it but if I right click it and view status it shows IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity: Not Connected. It only shows Media State: Connected. Any ideas?

PPTP is very unstable especially using Windows. I prefer using OpenVPN as service. It works for me all the time.
Any takers? :good:
Doing the VPN setup as well
I plan on using a DD-WRT router (Running OpenVPN) to connect with no PC required & one at my office so i can use the Samsung Smart TV FIOS app at work on the 50".
I will keep yall posted!

P.S. Can someone just hack the app & add a field in the app to add your home ip address/ mock the fake address to the app?
Yes, it should be pretty simple to hack the app. Surprised no one has done it. I'll offer a $10 bounty. :cyclops:

Can I stream movies from my Mac (without Internet connection)?

I'm currently on an offshore oil rig, with limited Internet access, I just wondered of there was anyway I could set up my macbook in my bedroom and have a wifi direct connection between them (with NO external Internet connection) so I could stream movies from it?
Any ideas?
Cheers

Have you heard of PLEX media server?
It sounds perfect for you.
What you will need is to make your tablet a wireless AP, aka hotspot, so your macbook can recognise that you're on the same network.

Yes, I use plex at home. I never realized that I could use it like that.
So make my tablet a wireless access point, connect the Mac to it, and I should be able to stream via plex?

Yes, that's the theory anyway.
If I were in your situation, that would be the first thing to come to mind.
Wifi bandwidth should be enough so it does not bottleneck, provided you're not on early versions of wifi, like a or b... even G should be sufficient.
I just attempted this at home... and since you're in the Nexus 9 forums... I'm assuming you have one... There is no option for wifi hotspot, unless you have the LTE variant, which isn't out yet...
Another option is to get a wireless AP device, like a router... plug in with ethernet to the macbook, and have your tablet wifi connect to it, that way, you're still on the same network.
Your router is just connected to the mains plug... since obviously you won't have an ISP.

Hmmm, that's a pain. Thanks for trying though!
Could I use my Mac as the wireless access point?
You should be able to use the "Create Network" option on your Mac from the Wireless dropdown on your top bar. Give it a name and it should be good for about 25-30 feet from your computer.
Setup plex server on the Mac and then use the plex app on your tablet (you might need to purchase it on the play store if you haven't already).
That should work "in theory". Worth a try. Easy peasy

Tried this last night, my N9 doesn't see the network after I have done the "Create Network" option on my Mac?
Guess it's back to the drawing board.
Thanks for all the suggestions though!
