Okay,
Now that we are all unlocked and rooted...does somebody happen to know what is actually safe to remove from the stock programs?
I figured I would ask, maybe it's still too early...but I figured it couldn't hurt
I noticed with the recent update, a bunch of unneeded things were added, but I don't know if they are now attached to something important or not :/
thanks in advance!
and while i'm here, thanks to everyone who got all this stuff working so fast
Dont need to root, open app drawer and press the low right button, then you can remove all apps with a red x on the top right of icon.

But there is a lot more junk apps that can removed, we just need to figure out why...

Yea...thats how you uninstall some of them, but there's a whole lot (read facebook, timescape components, playstation network, Video Unlimited, etc etc...) that can only be uninstalled via Titanium Backup.
On the X10, some of those things were attached to certain system apps, and if uninstalled would cause some things to stop functioning. On the Xperia S I'm imagining they did the same thing, so that was the whole point of my question.

Apps preinstalled in /system/app folder cannot remove unless you rooted.

Ops, I meant ''what app'' we can remove.
But I think Facebook components can be removed...

Unlocked and rooted now and I'm seeing all those htc apps in the system app folder. How do we get those to show in the app drawer?
Thanks and of course apologies if this has been asked, I searched.

I'm not rooted but I used an app called Any Cut to make shortcuts for hidden apps on my desktop. Apparently if you use ADW Launcher or Go Launcher they show up and are accessible.
Both ADWLauncher EX and LPP Plus show all the apps, I'm not sure why Sense doesn't .......
~John
Just using es file explorer will let you create a shortcut.

So how would you do this??
I don't have ADW installed right now (I had to have my phone replaced) but when I did it showed a CAMCORDER icon in the app drawer that could be used as a home screen shortcut.
With the totally stock ROM etc, it doesn't show up anywhere but if you hit the search button & type in camcorder it shows the icon & opens & works fine.
How would you create a home screen shortcut for camcorder with the stock Sense ROM??

Really? Hidden apps?
Can someone make a list of what all there is missing?

Can't guarantee this is everything:
Camcorder
Car panel
Dock mode
Mirror
Quick lookup
Got it from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367185&highlight=hiding
Thanks. That thread is nice and was what I was searching for.
Shortcuts are fine but I'm hoping to have them in the sense app drawer.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
someone posted a thread a while back saying something about a Sense config file that has all of the apps and whether they are to be shown or hidden. now that we have perm root i'm sure that we could modify that file now but i can't find the thread that talked about it.
Edit: found it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19800023&postcount=7
Credit goes to "scrosler"
Thanks. I just tried to remove the line referring to the mirror, but it's still hidden from the drawer. I might/might not try some more but in the meantime I'll have to use search option.
Thanks again. This thread is useless other than the links to the other thread

did you reboot after modifying it? you might have to, or you might have to clear the cache, or hell, you might have to do a data wipe before it takes effect
for us unrooted folk, how do we make shortcuts from ES?

That's good advice. I'm not home now but I did reboot. Clearing cache sounds like a good attempt. I'm going to be trying that!
Clearing cache wasn't enough.. I'll be trying data wipe later.
And.... Clearing cache and data wipe was a no go. Already had to do a restore and it's nice to know CWMs workin

I wasn't able to figure that out. How do we do that with es? I just get a shortcut to the apk not the app.

I've done a bunch of searching but haven't found an answer yet. Is there a way to remap the recent apps button to be a menu button? And long press for recent apps? I am stock, s-off, rooted, if that matters. Thanks!
Settings, display gestures buttons, recent apps. You can change it there

It is a recent apps button, not a menu button.
Op, mist roms allow you to change it, but you can't on stock.

Just get a new launcher from Market.
Its easier (and more safe) than mucking around with the stock one.
I know Holo Launcher Pro (HD as widgets, also my all-time favorite launcher for some reason) has the ability to rename drawer tabs, and load either most recent, most frequent, widgets, and custom list in them.
I am sure that there are other launchers that do the same.
If you want to change anything in the stock launcher, you must have root privleges.
Use at your own risk. Havent ever modded a launcher before, only other apps.
Copy the apk to another location (and make a backup if anything goes wrong).
Change the extension to .zip
Explore the zip, and modify anything that looks safe to change.
If you are brave enough, rename the extension to .apk again, and place it back in the "system/app" directory.
Reboot the phone if nessisary.
Use at your own risk.
Please thank me if you found this useful.

Many roms now support this feature and there is also a mod that when you flash it, it will enable this feature.

Worked great!! Thanks a ton!!
I have looked, and looked, and looked, and I cannot find among ANY of the myriad Android "What is this icon??" threads spread around the world a description of this round, volume-knob looking thing.
There's nothing in the status or notification panels which seem to be connected to it, and I have no idea what it's trying to tell me.
Anyone?
Thanks,
R
PS See attached screenshot of the top of my screen...
Are you running some sort of sound booster/amplifier? It looks familiar but I can't remember what app it may have been.
Have you tried to uninstall apps to see if it goes away?

I've never downloaded any apps from the play store that put an icon there. Most icons that get put there are from system apps.

I have a couple - JuiceDefender and My Data Manager will put icons there, but they're configurable.

A couple, but mostly I've looked through the 'running apps' and there's really not anything in there I don't recognize (or want to uninstall). I might, if it really gets to bother me.

I don't think so... although now I wonder.
It's just the Debloated stock ICS. I don't think he stuck anything weird in there - only took it out.
Thanks for all the input!

Really, I've downloaded and tried all sorts of apps and have seen icons placed on the task bar.... Juice defender as mentioned... Battery guru... Etc. It seems like I tried a volume+ app that placed a similar icon. However I haven't confirmed that since I no longer have it installed. Usually you can opt out of having an icon placed on the bar.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 4
I'm saying I've never seen a downloaded app put an icon on that side of the bar and I'm not saying they can't put one there.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
There is a blank app icon between that icon and the other. It's not connected to the system icons. If you look closely at the spacing you can tell.
Hi all, I was deleting a load of surplus system apps (inspired by http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44673431) but I deleted what I think was called the system widget, this was the 2x1 widget which, when clicked, expanded and let you switch off/on most things like wifi, screen backlight etc. I thought it was the onoff.apk so I put that back in system/apps but it didn't appear in the widgets selection screen. Does anyone know which apk I do need to restore?
On a similar note, in widgets selection, I have 'Play - My library' and 'Play Recommendations' but both are greyed out - does anyone know how to actually remove them from the widget selection screen?
Many thanks
Adrian
(as an aside, my nandroid backup has gone from 1.2 G to 795M in size clearing out a lot of junk)
