[Q] Slightly off topic - Phone number musical chairs - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Ok this is a bit off topic. If this thread is not allowed, please delete it.
I currently have a family plan with my wife and mother in law. I have a Dell Streak with data, wife has an iPhone 4 with data, and MIL has a plain old cell phone with messaging but no data.
I would really like to get the Samsung Galaxy Note to replace my Dell Streak 5.
But my phone isn't up for renewal until August. Wife's phone isn't up for renewal until August. MIL's phone is available for renewal.
So is there a way for me to get the upgrade via my MIL and I use the phone via some type of shuffling around?
I'm thinking along the lines of:
1) Buy phone via upgrade on MIL's number
2) Buy required data plan
Now it gets iffy...
3) Cancel data plan on my line
4) Ask AT&T to do a switcheroo of my number and MIL's number? Will they do this?
Or do I have to wait until August...
I hate waiting.
RVD.

You can use any line to upgrade your line. You just extend that line for another 2 years. I'm on a family plan and we have 5 lines one line is just a basic no data phone. I have used that line to upgrade before. Needless to say with 5 lines I always have an upgrade available its quite nice. When you go into the att store just tell them you want to use the upgrade on which ever line is available on your line.

Yes it can be done. It is a great phone and you won't regret it.
Don't care what anybody says about at&t. On the wireless side have always had great customer service. Just get the right rep.
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away!

awesome. looks like a galaxy note is in my near future...

One of the few good things I've heard about at$t is that data is not tied to the contract..if you extend your mil contract but keep her on a dumbphone there's no data required on that line.

I got my Galaxy Note yesterday!
I put my AT&T SIM card from my Dell Streak into the phone and it works for phone calls but data doesn't work. Of course wifi works fine.
Looks like I'll have to call AT&T?

You may need a new sim chip. I bought the note upgrading from the streak and they needed to activate a new one for me. Walk into your local AT&T retailer and tell them you got a new phone but data isn't working though you have it on your plan and they should get you a new one for free.
Oh and if you have unlimited data and they try to pull the BS that you'll have to give it up because they don't offer unlimited on 4G, just laugh and ask them to call corporate.

I called them and I do need a new sim. It actually came with a new sim but I left it at home so I'll call them tonight when I get home.
My old sim says 3G on it so i guess it's not compatible with 4G LTE.

cool, i was able to get this done last night. wow, 4g LTE is really fast. i did a speed test and it said 16mbps download? that's almost the same as my lightning fast verizon fios speeds.
i got some accessories like a screen protector (invisible shield type stuff but cheap stuff that i make) and bought a zenus block folio case (hopefully it will get here in a week or so).
i set it up with adw launcher ex and put in all of my favorite apps. it didn't come with a micro SD card so i stuck in the one that i used with my dell streak (16gb).
it's much more stable than my old streak. my streak would power cycle and FC a lot. this has been pretty solid.
anything else?

[Q] SGS2 and AT&T Media Net Plan

If I get the $10 unlimited media net plan on my SG2, all I have to say is that I'm now using a dumb phone (like a RAZR) and that's it?
Will they not catch on eventually like they did with my iPhone? Or if they can't catch on yet, if the SGS2 gets released in the U.S, will AT&T then have the phone in the database, and be able to switch plans?
I'm worried about losing my $30 unlimited smart phone plan right now. Thanks
I have a Galaxy S I9000M and I've been fine for 8 months.
I would assume the same with Galaxy S II but I don't know for sure. Hopefully you can find someone to verify.
A little research would have gave you your answer but here you go.
Att will never see the unlocked(uk) version of the sgs2 or anyother unlocked(overseas) in there database. Ive been running tmobile and overseas phones for 4 years now. Never had an issue and never will. 99.99% people dont even know what this phone is. You will never see change to your att account with any unlocked phone.
Iphone, some nexus 1s and very small % of dell streaks would give you problems with data. Hit the thanks if it helped you out.

No one can get you a definite answer since no one knows what AT&T will do next for sure. But I've been using non-AT&T phone on their media net plan for yrs without issue. If they add GS II to their database, then I will just sell it and move to the next phone.
With the X10a from Rogers, people were fine on AT&T for months. But then AT&T got their own X10 and bumped everyone to the pricey plans.

Yep, It can become a crap shoot when AT&T picks up a device. I made it years before they finally nabbed my on the N1, back to medianet now. While they have been claiming for years that they are going to crack down on unlocked phones they have have put very little effort into it and even then only with phones that they themselves picked up and the N1.
For the risk adverse note that they can add any device to their database as the numbers are in the public domain for all devices. This means they can sweep the network for any device. Not saying that they would, only that they could should they choose.
Realistically they have showed almost zero effort to find and adjust billing on unlocked phones and there is little to lose by switching to medianet since if you do end up getting caught all that happens is they automatically move you to smartphone. The only thing that would give me pause was having a grandfathered uncapped smartphone. Go to medianet and that is gone forever and even if it doesnt matter now it could loom large later. I do not believe I would risk losing that myself, not for this handset but because I might really wish I had it later.
I agree. On four of my lines I have non ATT phones with medianet but I have one with unlimited grandfathered and I want to keep it that way (I'm really hoping it carries over to LTE)

I was wondering if you or anyone else has gone over 3gb of data a month on the media net plan? I talked to a buddy that manages 2 different at&t stores and he told me they definitely know I am using a gs2 when I put the sim card in and if I use over 3gb of data they'll say something but they won't say anything if you stay under 3gb. Does this correlate with your experience?

[INSTR] Unlimited Data via iphone 2g

1. Obtain iPhone 2G (original)
2. Factory wipe/reset.
3. Download latest iTunes from Apple.com
4. Put SIM from GSII in iPhone 2G.
5. Plug iPhone in to PC, go through entire activation process.
6. Put SIM card back in to GSII. Dial *3828# and make sure your plan reflects the newly activated Unlimited feature.
7. Wait a few hours until you receive the text from AT&T letting you know to call them @ 611 and change to a "smartphone plan".
8. Tell AT&T CSR you want to keep your unlimited iPhone plan.
9. Done.
What?

WTF does this mean?
I think he means you buy an iPhone (original one that didn't have 3g) and get at&t to put on the $20 unlimited plan and then having them switch the service to the new phone and carry over the unlimited plan

thats great
can you explain what you did
I have the unlimited plan already, but from what I understand its really easy.
You pop your SIM into a iPhone 2G (edge only, first Gen iPhone), plug into iTunes, iTunes says "Hey, you need unlimited data to use this phone, want me to add for you?", click yes, activate phone, enjoy. Pop the SIM back into your SGS II, call att to ask why data won't work, they provision the correct data type, but still unlimited.
I have heard that if you had a iPhone in the past on that number it won't work, but I don't know for sure. Here the iPhone 2Gs still sell for $100+ for this reason, even if they have cracked screens, as long as they power on it will work.

that sucks..i've been an iPhone loyalist until 2 months ago...i don't think i'm paying 100+ for something that MIGHT work
Can you do it instantly, like swap the sim within 1 hour and call AT&T? or should you leave the sim in the iPhone for like 2-5 days and then switch back to your SGSII? I have the original iPhone laying around at my house and always wanted to try this trick but scared to.

You should give it a shot and report back. What data plan do you have now? If you don't already have the unlimited data the worse they could do is say "no" and put you back on whatever you have now.

Locally here people also rent them out for $20 to activate the unlimited data, then give back.
The only time I have heard it not work is if you currently have an iPhone with the tiered plans.

When I did the iPhone 2G trick a few months ago, I called AT&T too soon to "upgrade" from my iPhone to my Inspire 4G. Immediately after activating the iPhone in iTunes I called-in and the rep said I already had the 2GB plan and no upgrade is needed. I told her I have the iPhone and would really love to keep the unlimited data. She caught on and said "oh, I see what you're trying to do..." She recommended I wait for their system to update and try back, she didn't see the recently activated iPhone w/ unlimited data yet.
I checked AT&T.com over and over and within a couple hours my account showed I had the iPhone 2G with Unlimited Data. After seeing this I called back, said I want to upgrade to my Inspire. I was "grandfathered" with unlimited 4G without any issues. I'm lucky the first rep I got was so cool and didn't try to shut me down!
Overall, it took about 2 hours to switch to the iPhone and switch back.
Ugh ... just need to find an iphone 2g now.
You can 'buy' this service on Ebay if you don't mind giving out some personal info. Just search Ebay for 'ATT unlimited'. My buddy did this for like $30 about a month ago. The Ebay dude activated unlimited on his line with an old iPhone, then my friend just went to an ATT store and said he wanted to activate his GS2 (with SIM removed) on his line, keeping his 'unlimited' of course. They gave him a new SIM and he was out the door.

How much do you pay for unlimited data anyway?

Debating on carrier for my Note

I don't like AT&T and I'm with T-Mobile. AT&T plans give you very little for what they charge and their stupid roll-over minutes mean diddle squat to me. I've been with them at least twice in the past 10 years.
I was planning on getting the international version and possible going with RedPocket since I heard they use AT&T towers anyway. I would get 3g without the ball and chain.
On launch day I went to go see the Note with my husband. When I got to the mall, Samsung was having an event for the Note and I kind of got sucked in with the hype because I've been drooling over it for months. I went to the AT&T store and the manager shockingly honored an online price for the Note so I decided to get one. Ok, I got 2 since the deal was good and I needed a second line for my husband. He loyally feeds my phone addiction and goes with what ever plan/network I want. The other one is sitting in the box and is nicknamed "termination fee coverage" since he could care less about the awesome sexy beast, A.K.A. my new boyfriend who is 5.3".
When I got home I unlocked it and I have been switching back and forth between the networks. I used my AT&T Dell streak on T-Mobile before and was fine with the crappy speed for a while because most of the time I had Wi-fi. After the Streak I had the Galaxy S2 and got hooked on the speed.
I don't have long to decided because AT&T will charge to migrate my phone over after a certain period. I also currently have 2 sets of numbers with each carrier and don't want a double bill.
My debate is this, is it worth giving up a decent plan, so I can always have the full potential speed of my Note? I do plan on rooting it soon to get rid of the crap and open the potential. I will be paying about the same for less minutes on our family plan.
Devs are working on getting 3G to possibly work for Tmo. It can use the 1700 band that tmo uses for 3G. I would say give it some time. I use Simple Mobile which uses Tmo and I'm waiting to see if they get it to work.

I think it's a question of what will irk you more- a less than stellar plan or a slower phone. If your dislike for AT&T trumps your need for speed then lose them. If you think you'll frequently be in a non wifi situation and regret not having the full speed, stick with AT&T.
Read the AT&T contract carefully. If memory serves if you cancel with in the first month and keep the phone you are charged the difference in price paid vs. full price of the phone per/device not the early disconnect fee. I may be wrong about this but when I was reading it on Thurs. Im pretty sure I saw something to that effect
Thanks all...
Yikes! I never read my phone contracts. Funny how I spend so much time reading and researching my gadgets but mindlessly sign my life away.

I have Red pocket and love it...plus they roll over your unused data which is sweet.
am wondering what should i do too.....came from tmobile....for $98 bucks i had unlimitted calls, text, web, insurance, and international calls and text....with att i pay the same and only 450 mins, and no international
what is this red pocket service,,,,,does it have lte? is the internetet 4G.....
i dont know if i should go back to tmobile.....
whats the cheapest or best plan to have for the note, with unlimitted calls and 4g?
the go phone options seems better and cheaper than being on contract, it does not make sense to me...
can i switch to a prepay plan? and how much would i have to pay to change? i became a new att member....and pay 300 for the note....if i cancel do i just pay the 325 ETF? and take my note somewhere else?

from dell streak 5 to note 1 no data?

i just got a att galaxy note 1 from a buddy that upgraded to a note 2, i am coming from a dell streak 5 and fugured i could just put in my sim card and everything would work. but i have no over the air data, i have phone and wifi? am i missing a setting or do i have to call the mighty att .
thanks
Go to an AT&T corporate store and grab an lte Sim card, they are free there, and have them add lte to your plan. Or you can change your apn to the old one that your dell was using but you won't see lte speeds

No, but make it VERY clear if you're on an unlimited data plan that you want to stay on it. If they tell you that they don't offer unlimited data plans on LTE, they're lying. If they won't help you, you can always try Sam's or Costco, they don't work on commission (or so said the very attractive redhead who sold me my phone) and will help you for free. Also you don't have to be a member of either store to buy a phone and if they hassle you when you walk in, just tell them you're going to the food court.

[Q] [Verizon] Keeping Unlimited Data

Hi guys so just like most of you in here, I'm waiting on the galaxy s4 for Verizon. I am currently eligible for an upgrade, but I have a question regarding a a possible loophole for keeping my unlimited data. I share the account with my father along with 3 other lines. If I were to transfer the upgrade to another one of the lines and "upgrade" that line and then deactivate/reactivate on my line, would I be able to keep my unlimited data? And how would I go about doing this online with the preorder? Thanks for your time!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
There is a thread on here about keeping unlimited data. Do a search and you should find it.
You will lose the unlimited data on the line that's ready to upgrade, if you don't transfer it. If you decide to transfer the upgrade from the line that has the unlimited data, you'll be safe & won't lose it. I hope this helps.

Do what I did. I just bit the bullet and went to shared data but sold my unlimited data plans first.
I sold my wifes and mine for $750 combined. It will take years for me to make up that difference as I WFH three days a week so I am around wifi pretty much 5 out of 7 days.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I am going to try to just upgrade one of the other lines that's on a basic connection and then just activate the phone on my line when I get it. When I go to preorder online, it asks if I will be purchasing a SIM card and if not it asks for the SIM ID that I will be using. Should I purchase another SIM card or just give them mine? Im not sure of the process so I'm iffy about giving them my SIM ID because I'm not sure what that will do. any help is much appreciated.

Well, if the S4 is unlocked & your old SIM card is a micro SIM, you'll be fine using that. You might have some issues using your old SIM if the Verizon S4 isn't the unlocked version...

How do you "sell" these plans? I have two unlimited lines and one 4GB/$30 line that I would like to sell off, as we will likely not buy the phones at full price.
If you have an upgrade available on another line you can use that, but you need to first activate it onthe line you bought it for, then transfer it to the unlimited line.
Another prospective option ive considered and decided against is starting a new line, paying $199.99 plus $30 activation, and then immediately terminating for $350. You get it for $70 plus tax cheaper than paying full retail.
That $199 ends up being just over $300 when you finally click submit. $50 MIR makes it $249.99 to start.

I've had success in transfering the upgrade to the basic line on my account that did not have data. Once you get the phone, reactivate the basic phone on the basic line. Then activate the new phone on your original upgrade line with unlimited data.
OT: I ended up ditching unlimited. The extra $$/mon savings was worth more than keeping it. I'm on wifi for about 90% of my data anyway. My employer-provided (yes, I keep separation btwn work/personal) phone still has unlimited and I can tether to it if I need to.
Hey guys; new here, awaiting the Verizon GS4
I had luck when the iPhone 5 came out keeping my unlimited Data. We have 5 lines with two still on unlimited, 3 on the 2gb. With 5 we almost always have at least one available for an upgrade. I was on a Galaxy Nexus with unlimited and I upgraded another line that had a 2gb plan. When the phone arrived I simply did the switch online with the new imei and the nano sim on my unlimited line replacing my Nexus. Everything went smooth.
Since then I purchased a nano sim adapter and have often switched back and forth between the iPhone and the Nexus; I'm Nerdy that way. No problem switching the sim between phones. I run whichever phone I want depending on my mood. My nexus is fully rooted and running the Sourcery Custome ROM and the latest Franco Kernal.
What I did was this: My wifes ona share everything plan while I still have unlimited. We added a line to HER share everything plan, got the S4 @200$... And I will just swap devices on VZW website from the bionic I use now. My mother in law works for VZW said I should be able to just put my unlimited SIM in the S4, and it will work right away...However, may need to activate it on the line line, deactivate it, put on mine.... (We have tablets for our kids just incase they require a device on that new line, we will simply give one of those access)
Good luck...
