Hello all, even though i am pleased with the archos updates, I have decided to revert back to firmware 2.0.71 as I had no issues with the firmware, no browser crashes etc. Can someone please explain to me how this is done? I hope I do not have to root the device in order to do this...I tried resetting and then reinstalling the old firmware, but i get the error code when doing this. I am only able to install the latest firmware ..whoever helps i will send them a beer
You should just be able to copy the 2.0.71 firmware to the root of your device and as soon as you unplug the USB cable it should say "Do you want to update blah blah" and you click OK.
If it is throwing and error, then perhaps you need to step back from 2.1.8 to 2.1.4 or something first.
P.S. Send me a large bottle of Baltika 9. It costs like $4.00 but it will knock a brother on his ass.
@Explore, lol..thanx man but i tried the prior firmware n got the same error message about the firmware being too old for the device..the only time the update works is when i update with the same firmware that i already have on my device..which i find odd. Do i need to root my device to get this to work?
Well, Archos does not allow you to downgrade the device firmware... but apparently there is a hack which works... haven't done it myself, but give it a shot if you wish... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905053
@Craig ive seen that link but doing this voids ur warranty. There seems to be plenty of members that have downgraded without rooting the device...if someone could tell me how they got around the 212 error message id appreciate it

Oh, I have the Archos 101 8 gig. I am so confused why this is not working?? Thank u all for the assistance
I was able to go between 2.1.4 & 2.0.71 several times, with and without formatting....
Now that I've upgraded to 2.1.8, I can't downgrade.
I guess Archos "fixed" another non problem.....

Nope you can't even downgrade to 2.1.04 I just confirmed it on my A101IT.
Yes Archos again solved a non issue. I wish they stop with that sort of thing.

Is it possible to downgrade the firmware on the G9?
I just updated to ICS, but would like to go back...
Or, if anybody can tell me how to hide the menu bar completely for a kiosk application I am developing, that would be helpful.
This is possible in Honeycomb from what I can tell by killing systemUi, but not in ICS.
Thanks

YES.
You can do this, if you flash ICS rooted version and than you can install Custom Rom 3.2.80 ! .....after that you can install firmware_archos_it4.aos , or may be you don't need Custom Rom. Try directaly after ICS root to install orig Honeycomb....IT shoud be ork too ! Good luck !
try this
http://update.archos.com/9/gen9/gen9_/3.2.8/firmware_archos_it4.aos
boot to recovery, then update firmware, plug tablet into your computer, put this in the drive that pops up
when i try to update with the custom 3.2.80 rom, it says I need an lzo file, not gz. Is there a way to convert it?
In the meantime, I am trying the original 3.2.80 from archos. (It didn't work - error 221).
Thanks

Just rename the file, it is in correct format already

Hi!
If you rename initramfs ...do you think that we can do update directly over Honeycomb ?
Honestly I didn't tried to see if it works ....

Same to me Error 221. How is the correct name for firmware_archos_it4.aos?
I want to downgrade vom 403 zu 32.80.
im getting the same error 221 , i also want to downgrade to 3.2.80
i have no programming skills whatsoever, i just follow tutorials
something i did notice however was that the linux kernel for 3.2.80 was 2.x? and the kernel for 4.04 is 3.X
does it mean that the new release has made it unable to read the .aos from 3.2.80, like a new recovery menu

I wonder is there a real way to downgrade Archos 4.0.28 firmaware to 3.2.80?
I tried to downgrade and received an android robot picture rotating on loading for many minutes
I could only update it again with 4.0.28 firmware to make the tablet working
Could anybody let me know please, how to root the Sony tablet with the Android Versio 4.0.3?
Thanks
Klaus
Have a look at

it can't be done at this stage on a device with ICS already installed. You need to preroot the ICS image on a rooted Honeycomb device before you flash it.

Doesn't work
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
4.0.3 Is unrootable for now maby the devs will find out how to root these kernels that came with the original update. Have a little hope guys
Still the good way
It doesn't work but it's still the good way to go : search the web and test / report anything found about rooting an ICS 4.0.3 device !
If many people do that, we will have a chance to discover something usefull.
Can't wait for ICS Sony Tablet S root!
You gotta love the Devs! That ADB All-In-One tool is amazing! It helped me to make my own copy of ICS to flash anytime in the future.... even if I screw-up my OS. It totally saved me from my temporarily bricked honeycomb Sony Tablet S. I'm happily waiting for their ICS official root tool.
root 4.0.3 ics
Are the devs close to rooting the sony tablet s ics(4.0.3). When do you thi k it will come out
Anyone hear any news on this? I know if they do make root for this version, I will never, ever do a stock update again. I soooooo miss my root!

Bring these back alive. Get them to a tempting amount for their efforts. AND hopefully everyone will pay this time
I hope we get root atleast, I screwed up tab and had to force update and got kernel 10 for my efforts lol.

Friend, now that our tab is finally rooted.. thanks again to all who did this for us
Now, anybody have tried to downgrade to honeycomb after rooting?
How was the procedure, simple or tricky?
PS Procedure is suggested by Cat McGowan here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31723451&postcount=194
I tried but when I boot in recovery It sais E: /sdcard failed to mount can't found such directory
and when I put an SD card in it sais E:/sdcard failed to mount invalid argument
So don't know what to do?

There is no India 3.2.(1) anymore, removed from Sony servers. Change region to US (WIFI ONLY). Then you can downgrade to 3.2(1). Then you could change back to India. Use AIO too custom update to Downgrade to 3.2.1 with root (to be safe) even though the US 3.2.1 online here is rootable with the old method.
Good luck
Stifilz
Okay bro, i will try by changing region.

Download from my update links in signature, scroll down to US and download, copy to external sd card

but since you have not 3.2.1 rom of your regain, change regain is need

You will be very lucky to find that file. You should go up to ICS then preroot the HC update and then flash using AIO.
Hence giving you HC rooted.

THAT 3.2.1 rom is not easy to find
suggest you upgrade to 4.0.3 use ota
root it
then change to us 3.2.1 r2 rom,(Or china rom,i have it
last root it again
PS:not all ver#10 HC is un-root able!,my china 3.2.1 r2 is rooted by aio!
Yea bro, i have again upgraded to ICS but not with ota.. but downloading req file from stifilz bro's update thread. It all went just fine.
Yesterday, rooted it too. All well right now.
Now regarding HC, i have few doubts in mind. Can you guys please suggest:
-I have not yet understood how to install HC that is with kernal 10 which is rootable. stifilz suggested to install with aio to get the root on HC but i don't really get the steps. Can you please elaborate how to install HC and get it rooted step by step?
-In ICS, there is patch in aio to make it enable "Use sd card 2 as USB storage ", is there something available like this in HC?
-I sometime get microphone issue on ICS, has somebody else face similar issue and on HC microphone work well?
Thanks again guys for your help

normal HC is rootable, just use aio, make sure ver is 3.2.1,not 3.2
by now, only china #10 version is rootable,i 'am lucky chinese
maybe u can make a pre-root hc rom by aio, just like pre-root ics (just in theory)

USB storage is ics ONLY

I did a full wipe and its really better.
But the gaming performance is compared to ics worse.
I noticed that the tablet is while playing games (like gta vc) most of the time running at 1,4ghz.
But this means its running only on one cor, right?cause quad core is only 1.3ghz max, right?
There's no need to downgrade to ICS.
