[Q] Rooting my phone ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I'm new at android and everything so i would love to ask you developers (professionals) some questions.
First of all i would like to root my phone to get ICS but I'm kinda concern that i will lose my warranty. So the question is: "Is there any way to unroot your phone and get it back on official software (ROM)?" so i don't lose my warranty when i need some repairs or something.
Second questions is: "Can a failing at root damage my phone ?".
And third : "Can you recommend my some software, rom, or anything for rooting safely ?"
My spec :
Model number: GT-I9100
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: I9100XXKI1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575467 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKI4
PS: Sorry for my bad English its not my native language.
PPS: Sorry if similar thread exist.

Make sure to ask questions in the Q/A section next time instead of the general.
1. You will lose warranty by rooting. You will have to reflash the stock rom and use a USB jig (you need to buy it) reset the counter. You could also just flash the ICS and flash triangle away which does the same as a USB jig, but its Highly recommened to use a usb jig.
2. Failing to root wont physically damage the phone, but can cause a brick. This phone is fairly hard to brick and it can be fixed by flashing stock roms using odin. (a usb jig can also help in this situation).
3. Flash this for root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Instructions are provided nicely and its rather easy to root with this. You do also have some other options of one-click root if you wish.

Why would you want to root your phone to get ICS? You don't need root to install ICS.
If that's your only reason for rooting, don't.

Official ICS is coming this month, so id just wait for it if this is the only reason for rooting your phone.

Personally if you just want ICS I would just wait until it officially comes out. No need to void your warranty . Word of advise if you do decide you want to root one day ALWAYS look for a method to reverse it.

But there are no custom roms built on ICS genuine release yet .

Resurrection Rom v9.6 by westcrip is in my opinion the best ics rom (without TW) so far! no fc's, very smooth, best battery life i've ever experienced..

totally agree! as i mentioned definetely try out resurrection rom by Westcrip!

Nice to hear that this ROM work so well ...
Nice to hear that this Resurrection ROM (and many other) work so well ...
But ... It's simply to difficult and risky for newbies like me (and a lot other i could imagine)
I have decided to wait for official Samsung ICS firmware and maby get root when some nice tool like Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0] (zergRush Exploit) or OneClick Root becomes available ...
And BTW I don't think TouchWiz is that bad at all.
Only reason for me to get root, was getting rid of some Samsung bloatware.

Wow a question in the general section.

I think @Houselegend want to change ROM because of same reason like me. ICS comes out for few days, yes, but in our countries we must wait for our operators to get update. I don't know how much we will wait, but we expect about 2-3 months!
I can't stay more on stock, it's boring and battery duration is very short.
So, if is simple to get back on stock ROM, unroot and reset counter, why not play with custom ROMs?

There are a few threads on how to get back to the stock rom. To reset the counter u have to use a usb jig (u can buy one, those are really cheap) but there may be some apps out there to reset the counter but i think the sinpliest and most secure way is to use a jig! But why do u need to get back to the stock roms?

[Q] Rooting Galaxy S2

Hey Guys,
I switched from the Iphone to Android, I just got the Galaxy s2 and I want to root it. I have been reading of the different ways to root the phone, based on what I have seen so far the GingerBreak seems to be the easiest way to do it. So I am here in the forum, my first post is requesting a confirmation from you guys, which is the easiest way for an idiot like me to root my galaxy s2 without bricking it ?
Thanks
RedCell X
There is guide here in other post.
Basically you have to flash custom kernel, reboot and flash stock kernel back.
All using Odin.
Be careful - each custom kernel flashing will be visible. There is counter that shows how many custom kernels you flashed.
I stick with stock rom this time and avoid rooting.
This counter can be reset according to this forum. It's your decision.

Do you need root now .
jje
Gingerbreak only worked on the pre-production SGS2 models, it no longer works on the retail versions that are shipping now.
If you need root then use the link provided above, it works like a charm and you can always reflash an official kernel once you have root (and this is probably recommended if you also update your firmware to the lasted version).
The SGS1 usb jigs do work with the SGS2 and have the added bonus of resetting the custom firmware counter which may be handy if you ever need to return your phone under warranty, I got mine off of ebay yesterday and it works a treat.

Why is resetting the counter important? For warranty purposes?

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the response, I don't think i will be rooting my phone being honest I am afraid to do it. I will stick with the stock rom that came from it. I spent $850 for the phone I dont want to brick it.

Dont worry about bricking your phone, even if something goes wrong with the flashing process you should always be able to get back into download mode so you can reflash either by using the keypress method or if that fails the usb jig should wake your phone up.
Then you can either use ODIN or even the Kies Recovery method to get a working ROM installed.

Yeah, while no has (yet) reported that they have had a warranty request rejected because of custom rom usage, its nice to know how to reset the counter to ensure any warranty requests go smoothly.

Ahh, that sucks then, I've never owned an SGS1 before so never looked in the SGS forum, if they have actively rejected modded phones in the past then it makes the usb jigs a very worthwhile investment then!

[Q] Flashing my SGS2, what are the consequences?

Okay, i have a SGS 2 now for a couple of months, and i want to start flashing.
There are a couple of things i wanted to ask before i get started.
1. I heard about the USB-Jig... Am I right if i think that you need this to get
your phone fully back to stock for warranty reasons?
2. Is there a work-around for this JIG, so i dont have to buy it?
3. Is there some sort of EZ-base rom, like there was for the SGS?
I used that one everytime to get back to stock.. that way KIES recognized
my phone, and updated me back to latest rom.
I hope someone can help me underway flashing!
On my SGS i was a true flash whore, never knowing how long i would stay on one ROM. (most of the time just one day, and then trying out something different! )
Thank you guys in advance!
number one: Yes i do not have one but most people on here would suggest to buy it. You need to flash a stock rom yes then use the jig and it will just as you bought it out of the box.
number 2: Not really from what i have been reading. You can make your own jig but its only a couple of bucks so i say its a good investment
number 3 : do not know as i never used sgs. came straight from an iphone and never looked back
and if you want help with flashing let me know and i can give you some guides

Then to get rooted go to this thread read carefully and choose the cf-root kernel that you need flash it through odin and you be up and running. But the most important things are. Read the instructions carefully and second make a backup of your current rom

No
USB jig will put phone to download mode and on older bootloaders reset custom rom counter to zero .
2. Is there a work-around for this JIG, so i dont have to buy it?
No but you only need a jig to clear custom rom counter not to boot to download mode .
You require Original rom or stock rom flashed via Odin that will wipe root .
If the custom rom counter now shows any count you will require the usb jig if counter is zero you do not require the usb jig .

For androidmeda just click on my sig and it will take you there...Great rom many choices devs are always there to support you and overall all for me a great rom the best really...But checkrom is a wicked rom and has the kitchen to which that will spoil you for choice also. CM7 great but if i was you id start with sammy roms and then move over the CM7

USB jig issue with 2.3.5

Hi guys i was gonna root my phone and was told it would be a good idea to buy a usb jig first incase something goes wrong but when i went to buy one it said it did not support 2.3.5 then i read that i can flash the the phone with a modified firmware which lets me use the usb jig, now excuse my ignorance because i am a noob and i'm trying to do all the research i can before i root my phone but am i wrong in saying that if something goes wrong while flashing this modified firmware and i brick my phone i cant use the usb jig to revive it?

No my friend, you wont brick your phone if you follows the instructions correctly mentioned on the thread. Regarding your query about USB jig, Its a nice tool, everyone should have one before proceeding with flashing ROM/Kernals
USB jig will help to :
1. To reset custom binary counter.
2. Removing the yellow triangle after flashing custom software
3. Getting to Download mode in case of soft brick
Version 2.3.5 onwards are packaged with New bootloader which doesnt allow you to use the bootloader. If you follow the Intratech thread on flashing ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) and Chainfire thread for rooting (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278), you will not go wrong.
P.S Intratech packages all ROMS with old bootloaders, so you will be able to use USB jib.
All the best with Flashing and rooting . PM me if you have any concerns!
Hope this helps!

If you are good at soldering, you can make one at home using a USB cable. Search the forum and you will find thread regarding making the USG Jib or purchase online or buy locally.

SensatioN Rom - very good one
i agree that the USB jig works good, i get one month ago and i used it many times on a galaxy S2. i had the case when i get over the version 2.3.4 to go to 2.3.6 so i used ODIN to go back to the down version then i went to CM7. From there i became a flash junkie, tried at least 10 different roms and each time i needed to reset the custom binary counter i putted at least the 2.3.4 how much more fun i can get with this game"galaxy"boy. So I'm very grateful for the great job the XDA team are making here! Thank's to ALL!
is there a really good video tutorial to show me exactly how to do it including how to get stock firmware and how to get back so the usb jig works again and where did you get your usb jig was it ebay?

SGS2 development question

hey guys, just a quick question. will the GS2 completely void it's warranty after a custom rom/kernel or cwm is flashed on it?
sorry for the stupid question but I am coming from the HTC Sensation which works differently when it comes to the bootloader and custom software.

YES as oft repeated
Root custom firmware or custom rom counter above zero = void .

You may be able to revert /flash original firmware and remove root and reset rom counter but that depends upon a phone that will boot to download mode .

I also have other questions such as, when they return the device do i lose ROOT and such? Will they flash an unrootable/unexploitable ROM?
Thanks so much.

What preps ???
Requirments are no root and no custom rom and rom counter at zero .
= flash your original rom or stock rom to remove root .

If you have root on returning your warranty is void .
