Hi,
I have just got a Samsung Galaxy S 5.0 UK YP-G70 model with 2.2.2 Froyo.
I purchased a SVOX voice from the market and tried to enable the SVOX classic tts engine but the tick box is greyed out. Installing IVONA TTS has the same issue. Unable to enable the engine so cannot make it the default engine.
So can somebody else confirm that only the PICO TTS engine is usable on 2.2.2.
Can anybody who has flashed to 2.3.x confirm or deny they can use alternative text to speech engines.
Anybody who has rooted confirm other engines in use.
Any help would be much appreciated as it was purchased for use by my father in law who is losing his ability to speak. If it is confirmed that Samsung have broken something then it will be going back to the store for a refund .
Cheers
Phil
No, loquendo tts works like a charm on my g70 with gingerbread (I'm pretty sure it works on froyo too)
Updated to 2.3.5 Gingerbread and was able to enable other TTS engines. Other people seemed to be reporting 2.2.2 issues with TTS.

Hi All,
Loving my Hero, got over 420 apps installed and it's still running as fast as anything!!!
This phone is truly amazing, came from the G1 and it's in a different class.
Anyway I have noticed when trying to use a few voice apps I get the message:
Voice recognizer not present
I have looked for an answer on the forums but can't seem to find one.
I'm on Modaco 2.8, has anyone else got the same issue?
I'm wondering if it is down to the rom or my phone.
I've tried re-flashing the rom but it didn't help.

I've got the same problem with my htc dream. I think there's some sort of voice library missing because I don't have the voice search functionality in my search widget either.
There's a message in de android-developers mailing list that the voice recognition has been removed from uk releases of hero/dream.
How to Fix!
Install Voice Seach (by google) in the market to fix this issue. It contains the required Voice Recognizer and should get everything working! My Microphone button even showed back up in the keyboard after installing!
The app is not available in many countries, so here you can download the lastest version (v2.1.4) http://www.mediafire.com/?r9b47dcirtt8m98 and flash it from the Recovery.
(found it at MoDaCo)
Has anyone had any luck with changing the TTS engine on their nook color? The new version of ezpdf has a TTS option but it uses the stock pico engine and is difficult (at best) to listen to. I am wondering if anyone has tried SVOX? I currently can't find the settings to change any TTS settings.
I have tried the extended TTS app with no luck (atleast not with ezpdf, haven't tried any other apps).
Let me know if anyone has had any luck, if not I will give it a try myself and report back.
I am glad you asked this question as I am curious as well..
I saw the feature also in EZPDF and wanted to try it but it did not work.

Just use Google Voice in combination with GrooveIP. Download both those apps from the marketplace. Very easy to use and set up.
thank you for the tip. already tested and working, but i was talking about enabling the native voip built in that is supposed to be in the gingerbread 2.3.4 because i want to be able to pick the voip provider i like, international rates using google voice are not so cheap.
Hi,
I've got my SGS2 for a month now and I like it very much, but there seems to be a problem with the voice of the google maps navigation application. On my old HTC HD2 it worked fine and said which turn to take, but now I only hear a "PING" and that's it. I'm currently using the Hyperdroid rom(v1.0) with surgen.
How can I fix this?
Nobody? Up....
Hi
I have same problem, im running latest CheckROM 3.1.1
Best regards,
Henrik
1. Download Classic Text To Speech Engine from the marked.https://market.android.com/details?id=com.svox.classic&feature=search_result
2. After installation, open to select the language you want (USD 2.99) to download.
3. Go to Android Settings -> Voice Input & Output -> Text-to-Speech settings, activate SvoxClassic at the bottom of the screen, then select SvoxClassic as the Default Engine.
Notes:
- Google Navigation requires that the Text-to-Speech voice matches the phone language. You can change the phone language in Android Settings -> Language & keyboard -> Select language.
Hi
Thanks for your reply. I installed SVOX and bought Danish Voice and now its working.
I just wonder why it didnt work without SVOX - I have always had Google Navigation working with Danish voice without I have done anything. Maybe its because im running CheckROM 3.1.1 with XKJ3 kernel which maybe dosent support Danish?
Best regards,
Henrik
Is there a comparison somewhere, or someone knowledgeable on the subject that can help me out. Is there a reason to pick one over the other? This stems from when I use speaktoit assistant it prompts me to know whether I want to use Pico or Samsung. Thanks!
Just try them out and pick the one you like.
You can always change this in setting-->voice input and output
Personally I prefer Pico than Samsung, sounds a bit more natural.
You can also buy Loquendo TTS from the Market, which is much better than these two.

Be aware, Samsung tts messes up Google navigation voice badly
I have been using IVONA and have been more than pleased at the natural sound of this TTS engine.
I use svox classic myself
