I have a galaxy s2 i777 running batista fox rom and i wanted to know is there a way to extend the size of a file i can send via the multimedia text message?
Im running a stock Rom and if I want to send a video that I've recorded via MMS, I need to change the record mode to "limit for MMS" on my record settings through camera

I don't think that's what the op was asking. He wants to increase mms attachment size limit.

What sms app are you using? Most sms apps have a setting for mms size. Just do a little tinkering. But be careful because a lot of carriers wont accept out like 5mb pictures via mms lol. A lot of people tell me they get an "attachment too large" message. Hope this helps!

People are sending me n00dz but i can't open them! Any idea why this happens? I click the download button but it just goes for a while and then gives up. The file isn't even that big... using the stock messages app and my S3 is on AT&T.

Hi guys,
I'm new here and have been looking around to try and get my question answered but haven't quite had any luck.
I'm made the move from iPhone to Android and absolutely loving it. I'm sure we're all aware of the MMS issue? I have a couple of questions regarding this.
1) When sending MMS's from iPhone to iPhone and iPhone to Android, the picture quality is obviously much much better. Why is this? Why the limitations? It's definitely not the carrier.
2) I'm aware of Go SMS and all those 3rd party apps, but is there a mod or "fix" to the resolve the issue? I'm currently using LiquidSmooth RC7 and love the jelly bean messages app.
Apologies for the long post!!!
Thanks

Thanks for the welcome

What messaging app are you using?
When i first made the move from iphone to android I was using Go sms and Hancent. Both had this problem but after switching back to the stock messaging app, havent had the problem.
Using Liquid Smooth ROM which has stock jelly bean messaging app.
I stuck my sim in my iPhone again and a friends Windows phone and MMS that are sent are way better quality. Only on Android it's shocking... just curious as to why exactly.

Hmmm that could be the reason why. Try using Stock SMS if you can. if not then I'm out of ideas.
Yeah already tried that. Still nothing. Apparently Cyanogen Mod has a settings menu where u can change the outgoing MMS size. I'm sure there's something in the code that can be changed but not sure where. Will wait for CM10 and see if that changes anything.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Need to change the compression level of the MMS i guess.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Yeah, would be good if there was an option to set the limit. At the moment it's at like 40-60kb. Ridiculous. All other phones have a much higher size.
Sent from my GT-I9300
Yeah its a shame really. Only working solution I've seen is to tell go sms to preserve image quality and stop compression.

Actually it is the carrier, when you are sent an MMS, the carrier sends you a SMS telling you to get it.
Your phone then connects to their server and passes a user agent string. The carrier then works out what's best to give you.
If they haven't got around to adding you user agent, often they go for worst case scenario.
Some apps allow you to have a custom user agent (messaging, not web) which should help.
The other possibility is the iPhones were using iMessage instead.
+1 for iMessage. Why use other between two iDevice?

Op what country are you from mate? Regardless of what other people say it is true MMS on android is shocking so i use whatsapp it is a multi platform app and you can send 12sec vids and pictures via your data and it doesn't cost you anything extra. Only costs a few kbs of your data. You can also use kik. But i wish the mms quailty was better to be honest.
I don't see how its the carrier when the same carrier on other phones don't have an issue.
I'm from Australia mate. Yeah started using watsapp a while ago then deleted it.. but other people need to be on it too don't they?

Yes.
But it still might be the carrier, since iPhone to iPhone probably doesn't send mms, but uses imessage instead. That's why there is no limitations in picture size.
I personally prefer using Line. It's free (whatsapp costs 1.99 USD a year for "server costs")
iPhone to iPhone worked even before iMessage was out. Pics that were sent were delivered in good quality.
I've found my solution for the time being. Facebook messenger has added SMS/MMS threading into its app now. Very seamless and convenient. I've tested sending MMS to phone numbers without them having a Facebook account (or not being Facebook friends) and the pics get delivered in great quality.
Thank u all for your suggestions

Try changing your network settings. From CDMA/lte to CDMA only.
Some have problems and some don't. It may be a network issue as many Sprint forums complain about it
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
What you need to do is go to the stock messaging app and go to the settings and uncheck auto receive mms. Then when you get a mms go into the stock messaging app and click download. That'll fix it

I'm having the same issue, where I cannot send nor receive MMS messages. I tried changing the network type and unchecking the "auto-receive" setting and using the "download" buttons in the actual message but to no avail.
If anyone has any other ideas (other than contacting Sprint) please let me know! It's strange that it only affects some users and not others.
Thank you in advance!
If you are on cm10 or 10.1 then sprint can't help you.
So don't waste your time.
You can try sending a MMS to yourself. That's one of the first things i do when i flash an aosp rom. It might hang for me 1 out of 20 MMS.

Can you describe exactly what the problem is? Is the picture just not going through at all?
MMS
I can't get MMS to work either. I flashed the unofficial cm 10.1 rom and just yesterday I flashed the cyanogenmod black 10.1 rom. Now i've tried other suggested fixes and they don't work. I downloaded go sms on both roms and i can send and receive mms, but for some reason I can't do it in the stock apps. This leads me to believe that its not an issue with the network but rather the stock app. Am I correct? I usually use go sms but I like the fact that with the stock app i can pull down the notification bar and just push reply from there and get a little pop up window.
BTW when I uncheck auto-receive it just shows me that I have a mms message but it won't download. This is the only issue I've had so far with cm 10.1. I don't want to go back to a sense rom.
Galaxy Nexus - Same MMS Problem on LTE only... 3g ok
Tried cm10, pa3, and EOS 4 all have the same issue when sending/receiving MMS while on a LTE.
Everything works great on 3g.
Compared the the APNs for EOS and the stock OTA 4.2.1 from sprint (which mms via LTE work) and they look the same.
So whats broken with all these roms?
You guys should try this. Back in the day ,pre-android era, whenever I had issues with text I would send one to myself and that would fix it! So I sent myself an mms and that fixed it for me. Also try sending it through goSMS maybe and then uninstall the app if you don't like it. Keep in mind that I am able to receive MMS through goSMS just not the stock app. Good Luck!!

I've tried all the quick and not so quick fixes offered so far including yours and none including yours work... sorry. The problem is with the ROM(s) which most assuredly are not based on the official OTA 4.2.1 from Sprint. I know this because mms works on the official OTA from sprint for either wifi, 3g, and LTE. So until the rom devs decide to fix this problem we are not going to be able to send/recieve mms on LTE.
Hmm

I swear I saw a post on how to do it. I just can't find it anywhere. I know it can be done tho. It's horrible even a 10 second video is to big to send via mms. At least for my phone it is.
MMS Compression kills me. Can't send someone a nice high res pic. Sizes it way down and compresses it to hell. The main way I share pics is through texting and now it's just stupid to send a pic through texting since it looks horrid. Never had compression issues on iPhone unless it's through video but I don't care much for that.

How about using a different texting app such as Gosms? You can adjust the maximum mms size in that app.

/system/customize/MNS/default.xml
Look for MMS_Msg_Size1, 2, 3, and MMS_Msg_Size_Choose
Edit values to something like 500K, 1000K, 2000K -- whatever you like. Save, reboot. Might have to clear data on messaging app to get new values to take.
Edit: Current values are in data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs/com.android.mms.customizationBySIM.xml. Edit there and reboot.

Need to be running a custom kernel that allow remounting /system as rw. Stock kernel write protects /system so modifications are lost on reboot.
I made some size changes to mine, and now it looks like it doesn't want to send mms messages any longer, text messages work just fine.

I'm on a HTC One S and I did this too. Apparently the mms app now says the limit is what I've set (that is 1MB), but when I attach a photo this gets compressed nonetheless, even if it's smaller than 1MB.
Are you guys on the HTC One experiencing the same?
That's one main reason I moved away from stock messaging to Textra app. It's way smoother than the stock HTC one messaging not to mention It's light weight, not a memory hogger, very simple and smooth. The others like go sms and handcent are buggy and full of ads. Go to the playstore and try it for yourselves. All of my friends with Androids love it. BTW..it's Free.
