Free T-Mobile data - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

UPDATE: This worked well for a short time but now reverts back to the up sell page. My only guess is T-Mo caught on and shut us out; YMMV.
I searched the forum and didn't see this, although I may have missed it. Just wanted to share in case it hasn't been posted or for anyone that may not know.
[Disclaimer: I have no idea if this will inevitably result in a loss of service, so don't blame me if that happens! Proceed at your own risk.]
I recently got a T-Mo prepaid SIM to use with my unlocked i777, as AT&T's coverage where I work is basically nonexistent. I had a rep set me up with the $15/month unlimited text plan which I quickly realized has no web access included (not even pay per MB lol). This was confirmed by opening the browser and being greeted by a T-Mo upsell page.
Okay, so... after some digging around and trying different APN settings, I found a workaround:
APN: wap.voicestream.com
Username: TMobile.com 0000000000 (use your phone # in place of 0000000000)
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: Internet+MMS
After saving and selecting the new APN, I now have data! Confirmed this by loading multiple pages in the browser. It may be slow, but it's still nice to have available for the times when you really need it!

Cool trick, did you do any speed tests?

it would be edge (2g) speeds because this phones 3g and 4g (hspa) radios are built for att frequencies only, but att and T-Mobile share the same 2g frequency.
Still working internet is working internet. Good find.

No, I didn't even think about that at the time. As stated above, it'll only be Edge speeds. I'm not sure it would be any faster even if our phone supported the proper bands, since it's using the WAP APN meant for cheapo feature phones.

If data could be fix to use 3g I would go pick up a Sim and only use T-Mobile. Att keeps getting more and more expensive.

This might sound silly, but if anyone knows... 1.) Does there need to be a working Tmo card in the phone w/ that APN (vs. att card), 2.) Does it need to have recurring services or could any purchased prepaid Tmo card be swapped into the 777 in an emergency?
I ask b/c AT$T data services blow in my area and I currently have a network data block to avoid paying for said unusable services...I'm curious if this would work in an emergency on the road or if it's likely that Tmo data is as bad as AT$T's.

An (educated) guess tells me 1. Yes, you would need to have the T-Mo SIM in when using the APN. And 2. I would imagine so, since your phone number is used as the Username in the APN, and I'm sure their network identifies the request as either coming from an active/inactive account.

So, if i can use 3g 4g only with AT&T, how come mine is working with Tim (brazilian carrier) ?

It's not only with AT&T. AT&T and T-mobile use different bands for 3g. Obviously TIM uses the same bands as AT&T.

Is this still working for anybody? All of a sudden I started getting the web2go error page.
And since upgrading to CM9, I don't even get that anymore. I get Unable to connect to the Internet. No edge logo up top or anything.

4G connection

Hi everyone,
I just got the phone from the shipment yesterday and I just swap the sim card that I'm using and it work out of the blue. But today I got a msg from AT&T that I need the correct data plan in order for the 4G to work???
So here's the story, the plan I'm currently using is iPhone unlimited data plan back in 2009 then I get the Captivate, keeping the same data plan and internet still works normally. Now come the galaxy s ii with the so-called 4G speed I noticed I still get the same speed as the Captivate? The only different is on the Captivate it shows H but on the galaxy s ii it shows H+.
Is it supposed to say 4G or something on the indicator? or H+ is the 4G that AT&T is blowing up about?
Supposedly there's a new unlimited data plan you should be able to be put on. Look at the threads of people using iPhone 2gs to get unlimited.

They need to migrate your from an iPhone data plan over to the one listed below. This is the unlimited version that I have myself:
SMT PERSONAL $30.00 (stands for Smartphone Personal)
GPRS WAP UNLTD
DOM - RHSDPPB 4 (Notice the 'HSDP' part of this coding which specifies the correct speed)
HSPA+ data has been out quite some time

You do need a new plan, but they will grandfather you into an unlimited 4G plan. Or at least they're supposed to.
is this the right plan? only difference is that it doesn't have a 4 at the end.

Interesting. I can't say for certain but I do know there's only supposed to be 1 HSDPA Unlimited plan for Smartphones. If you go into your account online and go to Manage Features > View All Included Features - do you see SMT Personal $30? If you do, and you saw the code you listed on your actual current data usage screen, I'm pretty sure you're good. Obviously I'd call just to make sure...

You need a 4G sim card. The 3G sim isn't going work properly with your old data plan. That's what AT&T told me and did when I upgraded to this phone.

To make it simple, call ATT or go into a store and have them update your IMEI so it will also update the correct plan for you.
There's no difference in price, just a different SOC code in the system. So yes, you keep your unlimited data!
If you go into a store, they *should* be able to change your sim free of charge. It doesn't really make anything better, but it doesn't hurt to keep everything updated.

I called ATT today and they switched me to the new plan, it is called "Smartphone Personal". I did some speedtest but results turn out the same as before, still got the same speed as my Captivate thou... avg about 2 Mbps - 3 Mbps for download and 800 kbps - 1.2 Mbps for upload (This is in San Jose area, not sure about the speed in other areas)
So basically if you live in NorCal, you don't need to go through all the hassle to change the current data plan.

[Q] SGSII International version in US

SO I have an international SGSII and I now live in US. I can't get 3G or H+ with T-mobile. The only company I know of that would offer me that speed is at&t But they are sooo expensive!
Are here any alternatives to get the highspeed?

I don't think there are any other carriers in the US that use the necessary frequencies for mobile high-speed other than AT&T and H2O, no.

Yup, this works; I've got this exact setup, and my bill is around $65 a month. That's for 450 anytime minutes (with rollover), 5000 night/weekend minutes (with rollover), unlimited mobile to any mobile minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited "non-smartphone" data.
From what I hear, you could even go on the GoPhone unlimited everything plan for $50 a month, and it works.
The ISGS2 doesn't support T-Mobile US' bands so you'll get 500K down using GRPS. GoPhone plan's double that to about 950K. If you want fake-4G, you'll have to go with a real AT&T plan. What you can do is sign up for a cheap minutes plan and add unlimited messaging with mobile-to-any-mobile calling ($20) and add the unlimited data for non-smartphones plan for $10. It's not too bad a price that way.

So what you guys mean is that if I get an at&t plan (whichever one) and puch in these apn settings I will get unlimited HSPA? Even if I get a prepaid plan? Do I have to get a data plan included or what?
This is exciting!
I'm not sure about the pre-paid plans but it definitely works for me on my family plan. You'll just have to try it out and report back!
By the way, I wouldn't tell at&t that you have a gs2, just tell them its an old unlocked flip phone you got off of eBay. You can even give them a fake imei #.

Yes, you'll have to get SOME kind of data plan. I think any data plan will do. I am using this very phone on the "unlimited data for non-smartphones" data plan just fine, and get pretty decent HSPA+ speeds - usually between 1.5 and 6 mbps down.
Think for a second, dude. If you don't get a data plan at all, when your phone tries to connect to the gateway, it will not get a connection.

If you have an old at&t phone you can use that imei to give at&t or change a few #'s on your i9100 imei. At&t won't recognize the imei from your i9100 even if you do give them that #. I always give them a fake # just in case.

In this case, you sacrificed potentially higher speeds in the future (when LTE comes online in your market, if it hasn't already), for a cheaper unlimited plan.
Not saying I wouldn't have done the same (I totally would have - I've decided an average of 3mbps down on HSPA+ is PLENTY fast enough for my phone... it's a phone for crying out loud! So I'm staying on my non-smartphone plan), just pointing it out.
Where I live they have to pipe sunlight in, I won't have LTE for a long time. Where I work I get around 3 mbps down so that's plenty for me as well.

So, Im back in LA. The first thing I did was to go to AT&T store and buy myself a prepaid plan. $50, includes unlimited, talk, text and data for non-smartphones. Then I punched in the APN settings and now I have H+!
I did a speed test and the results were pretty decent:
PING: 156
DOWNLOAD: 3683kbps
UPLOAD: 733kbps
It's good enough, even though in Sweden we have sooo much better and faster... I did the speed test in Sweden and the numbers were doubled for D/U.
But I have another question. My roommate has an iPhone, and we tried to punch in the same APN (which by the way is soooo annoying and complicated....). But they never worked for him. Does anyone, for some reason, know if they work on iPhone 4s? And if yes how do I do it the "easy way"

No offense, but you'd be better off asking iPhone questions in an iPhone forum. There is not a very high percentage of i9100 users who also use iPhones... Not to say that there aren't any at all. I know they exist. Just saying.

So based off of reading this thread..
I have T-Mobile prepaid right now.
I will be receiving an i9100 sometime this week, and don't want to live with EDGE.
Can I sign up for a plan online, get unlimited data for non smartphones, get a cheapo free non smartphone, then just pop the sim into the i9100?
Or can I just get a GoPhone plan and pop the sim into the i9100?

EDIT: FYI, I've got the unlimited data for non smartphones from back when I had a sony ericsson w810, and have gone through three other smartphones before this one just by popping my SIM card into the new phone. Just make sure the SIM card is at least 3g capable. They should all be at this point, but you never know if they're still giving out old SIM cards or not.

Intermittent data connectivity issues with Note - SOLVED

Mods please sticky this.
There's been several threads with people saying that they are getting intermittent slow or no data connections. Some people suspected throttling.
I did some digging around and found that it is a common issue on all ATT LTE phones. I have read up on various fixes, found one that worked, and will summarize it here.
Create a new APN that is EXACTLY the same as your current one with two exceptions:
1. APN: phone
2. APN type: internet
Save the APN. You should now have 2 APNs. Make sure that the original AT&T PTA APN is the selected one with the green dot.
What we've done here is replace the APN just for internet, and left everything else the same. If you try setting the type of the new APN for everything, it breaks MMS.
There are several dead spots in my town where I get incredibly slow or no data , despite my wife's iPhone working just fine. I made this change and now it works perfectly. Same top speeds for upload and download.
The only thing I cannot test is LTE, since I am not in an LTE area. From what I've read, this is an LTW APN so it should work.
Thanks. Works great and I'm in LTE area.
Very interesting.. thanks for the post.
Just for clarity, we're not to remove "internet" from the original PTA, right?
Edit: Oh, and we can name it whatever we want, I'm assuming? Or does it have to match the original to replace it?

You can't remove the original APN - it's not editable. Leave it as is.
You can name the new APN whatever you want, as long as the APN is called phone.
I am so excited to test this out. I just entered those settings and will report back at the end of the day with my results.
I'm in an LTE area as well and have been experiencing an issue where every time my phone goes to sleep google talk looses connection and I no longer get any push notifications for gmail or my exchange email.

Will see if this helps at all. Suddenly I am having a tong of issues with data on the Note. My skyrocket had no issues in this area. The Note just started experiencing issues yesterday. called att and they reset the data connection on their end and it worked for a few hours.
The oddest part is that the indicator shows I am connected
In an lte area btw.
Oh...another oddity...when calling in to att the guy said his system showed my phone was connected to wifi....my wifi was not even on

Nevermind previous post....
Please note, PTA APN is required if you want to use LTE. Phone APN is for HSPA+. If you are in the area where there is no LTE service, this might be the solution for you as AT&T has a network issue ever since it launched LTE that LTE phones with PTA APN can't get consistent internet access when there is no LTE signal.
So, don't DO this if you are in a LTE area. Or else, you will be forced into HSPA+ network instead of LTE network you paid for.
If you select the phone apn yes....you will be forced into hspa. ..actually in my case it went to no cell connection at all.
There is a theory that simply having it there but not selecting it may help...which doesnt make sense but I am testing it regardless

that's basically what this is - having it there but not selecting it. its almost as if it uses it as a fallback when the PTA apn can't get connected in an hspa area. this would explain why my hspa issue is fixed and others can still connect to lte just fine.
This problem is quite wide spread when Skyrocket was first released. Can't believe AT&T still haven't sort this out.

then you did it wrong. make sure the original PTA apn is the selected one, not the new one. also make sure the new apn type is only internet. I had the same issue when I made those mistakes when I was first testing.
Did this and does not work as people have stated. Doing speed test before adding the apn I would get lte speeds. After adding the phone apn my speed test decreased considerably. This was with att pta selected as well.
ATT has to fix the connectivity issues. For myself, when I do speedtest on lte, it is very sporadic! It times out sometimes while doing speedtest. It's very annoying!

it works for those of us in hspa areas. i guess it isn't going to work for lte areas.
I did the fix and still got 17MBPS on speedtest. I got my mms working btw.
Hrm...i think peopke are doing it wrong. In an lte area, Added it per the directions and the connection issues are slighty better...not completely gone.
No difference in speeds. Lte is the same..hspa+ is the same

[Q] HTC Titan II -Shows 4G, but no data?

Hey guys. I have a HTC Titan II and started using it yesterday. I placed the sim card I had from my previous phone (xperia play r800a), and noticed that it shows I have a 4G connection. However, as soon as I open up the browser nothing happens. Says there is something wrong with my data connection. I took the card out and placed it back in my xperia play. Internet seemed fine.
Then I read that it may have to do with my sim not being a 4G LTE sim; so I went to the ATT store this morning and got a new sim. I asked if it was a 4G LTE sim, and the girl informed me that all newer sims are 4G LTE sims. I took the new sim and placed it in the T2. Still nothing.
So I am unsure as to what the issue is. I have a cheap unlimited ATT data plan that has been working like a champ for the last couple of years. I figured that at the very least, I would get 3G speeds on the T2 since I am not on a 4G plan.
Any advice? Thanks!!
You have to have your data plan updated to the LTE plan (you get to keep what ever data cap you have today, unlimited or else). You can do it by calling customer service or in AT&T stores. Otherwise, it will not work. The LTE connection uses pta APN which requires LTE data plan on your account.

Thanks for the info. I am currently paying $30 for unlimited data (non-smartphone) with texting. I am assuming when switching over to LTE that I'll be responsible for paying some sort of premium because I'm guessing they don't have non-smartphone LTE plans.
I managed to get data to work by editing the APN info on the phone. It works, but I do not think it's running at LTE speeds or even 4G (even though it says 4G at the top of my phone).

What APN did you enter? Just do following to get 4G speeds:
1) Add APN
2) wap.cingular
3) Reboot or wait 3-4 mins
I just switch to LTE APN. It is fast, but from what I'm reading online, I've set myself up for tighter AT&T controls around tethering, throttling etc. But, I can confirm that it is backwards compatible.

I went to the connection settings, pressed on "ADD APN". For the name, I entered, "AT&T HSPA+". That's it, and internet works. It says 4G at the very top of my phone, but not LTE. I assumed this was normal. Would entering wap.cingular be faster?
Thanks!
I think AT&T HSPA+ is supposed to be quicker than wap.cingular
I read it some place a few minutes ago but I lost the page. Someone ran a test and speedtest.net had higher speeds and lower pings.
You will need the pta APN to get LTE connection. You will need Phone APN to get real HSPA+ speed (if you want anything over 6mbps). Otherwise, wap.cingular gives you 3G speed (which all new AT&T phones will show it as 4G, lame).
Both pta and Phone APN requires specific data plan codes on your account (If you have LTE data plan, you can use both pta and Phone APNs but HSPA+/4G data plan can only use Phone APN).
AT&T did so exactly to prevent customers like you who have an old non-smartphone data plan to take advantage of its new high speed data network without paying for it.
In most places, HSPA+ speed is not much quicker than 3G/wap.Cingular beause AT&T's HSPA+ network is over congested. However, LTE is on a separate network and the data speeds are significantly faster than HSPA+.

Geez...tell me how you truly feel.
JK! Thanks for clearing that up.
LoL, nice editing. NBC should hire you
Now you have to decide whether to save $$ but use slower 3G data or pay up to trade for higher speed. You won't get to keep the unlimited because your current plan is not qualified smartphone plan. So, basically you are looking at $30 for 3GB + $20 for unlimited text.
Need a SIM card
I had the same problem as I got my phone free from a MS store (traded them my old windows mobile device for it). I ended up having to take the phone to an AT&T store and they stated that my SIM card would never work with the phone for data. It was a 3G SIM card. They also changed the data plan so maybe both are required.

Both are required. But if your existing SIM is new enough it should support LTE without problem (there was a specific SIM card ID range to support LTE).
BTW, if your phone is connecting on LTE, it will show LTE instead of 4G on the notification bar.

for whatever reason, I read somewhere around here that that particular SIM made your "smartphone exclusion" hold-up against most recent phones. So, you gave that benefit away - don't worry if you don't know much about it.
wap.cingular gave me data thanks! But I am a little confused is it 3g or HSPA+? I don't need to change my data plan for LTE (since it isn't in Seattle yet) but I want to change it if I am not getting HSPA+

HSPA+ in WP7 gets represented with an "H" or "4G"
3G gets represent with a regular "3G"
LTE with "LTE"
Most likely you are under HSPA+ ... Do a Speed Test with an app like "Bandwidth" to see where you max out and that should give you an idea if its 3G or H

it says 4g and I get about 3mbs I am assuming its HSPA+ thanks for clarifying!
All AT&T new phones, including iPhone with iOS5 update, will say 4G even if it is on 3G. It really doesn't matter much. 3G and HSPA+ in most places are same speed. You only need to worry about it if you want LTE. If you don't have LTE, leave it alone.
I have put both APNs mentioned and that seems to work for a little while, but eventually the data cuts out again.
Is this an issue similar to what is happening with the Lumina 900? Is this a Microsoft problem or AT&T? And is anyone else still having issues after updating the apn like I am?

Your data plan limits you to wap.cingular APN only. Nothing else will work for you.

Since my MMS and tethering no longer work with this phone, it looks as if I may have to switch out my plan(s) and fork over $70 ($50 data+$20 text). IMHO, a bit of a rip off...OR I can just go back to my xplay and everything will work as it was...but where is the fun in that?

what speeds are you guys seeing on average with international note in the US on AT&T

Exynos not compatible with AT&T Network. Only HSPA+ I have the HTC One X Quad core on Straight Talk (AT&T MVNO) and get gravy HSPA+ speeds here in Charlotte
so what your saying is no matter what i will not get any better speeds than 1.5 and lower. i get 3g/4g/h+ on my SGS3 right now. unless there just false indicators in the notification bar so i dont see the incompatibility.

There is definitely something going on with the SGS3. Right next to my unbranded SGS2/GT-I9100, I'm getting much lower speeds on the exact same network. I'm talking 7.5Mbps vs 3Mbps on AT&T.
Not sure if the modem's just not optimized for the US AT&T networks (yet).
Thank for the test, i really didnt think this was normal. i hoping to find a modem that works well enough to get me the 3-4 mbps......
right now, all yesterday......i could NEVER even get above 300kbps
i love the phone less this aspect of it right now.

no
to the OP and anyone experiencing slow network speeds, check you apn settings on the phone make sure you have the ATT phone apn selected (apn name phone) instead of the default Cingular apn...Phone is the HSPA+ apn but on unlocked international phones it defaults to the APN provided by your sim which is the Cingular one...case in point on my nexus i have to always manually input the phone APN after flashing a rom...
also even though 2 phones running on the same network maybe in the same physical location, they may not be connected to the same Cell Site Tower, as such each phone maybe communicating with different towers with varying degrees of network congestion, thereby affecting your speeds...it could also just be the area you're in...as another ATT user with an international s3 has posted screens of him gettin 8mb down

I'm don't think you can switch to the phone APN on the $10/$15 medianet plan... has this changed?
I understand cell towers, but you have to realize you're really reaching with that explanation... especially when I am able to get consistent 6-7.5Mbps ALL DAY on the GT-I9100 when I have not been able to hit 3.5Mbps downloads sitting in my office all morning. I'm talking well over 10 tests at various times throughout the day, SOMETHING is up.
CONFIRMED: phone APN does NOT work on the medianet plan, so let's not muddy the water and confuse the issue at hand.

Well if you can't change the APN..you can either complain to ATT or try another S3...for me when I first got my GNex I got crap slow speeds on HSPA+ till changing the APN...but I am not on a medianet plan..

That's the point, I'm talking about the medianet plan, and getting much faster speeds on a phone sitting right next to it. Repeatable results too.
Again, has nothing to do with APN in this case.

NO, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I'm seeing significantly slower speeds than my UK GT-I9100 when running the same exact speed tests at various times during the day. Could just be a modem issue as these phones were launched for the UK region, who knows.
Okay thanks, looking to purchase a galaxy s3 and justifying the savings from the 5gb data vs medianet plan to my wife. BTW what color is yours?
