My aunt is using this phone. She told me that her phone will have a sudden shutdown about 2-3 times a day and will get very hot when she woke up in the morning.
Since she does not know anything advanced, she is using the stock rom came with the Ace since day one and i have not done any modifications to it.
Any idea why?

Maybe reflashing the phone to the latest firmware can resolve this issue.

Wifi settings...
In detailed WIFI settings set sleep mode as: never. For me is work.
is your Aunt that techie of a person? if not she's probably leaving a lot of things running in background, maybe Wifi left on, GPS on, 3G connection active etc. that could lead to CPU being busy causing the heat-ups and auto-shutdown (this is actually a safety feature to avoid damaging your processor)
Maybe she closes apps with home button
XDA ♥
I find it heats up when charging if i'm using it. But not too bad. As phones get more like laptops i assume we will get the same issues.

Just trying to build some statistics as to how common this turning off problem is.
--------------------
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ANSWERING:
1) Obviously this is regarding the phone turning off on its own when its not due an empty battery.
2) Only answer with "no" if you've been using the phone for at least a week. If you've been using it for less and it hasnt turned off, answer with "No - but had it for less than a week".
--------------------
I just want to know before I send my phone to Amazon for replacement.
I've had it 8 days, so I clicked the 2nd "no". If I saw any hardware fault in a new device I'd immediately get onto the supplier for a replacement. Unless there's software at fault here (unlikely, but obviously possible) then I can't see the problem simply going away.
Hope you get it sorted mate.
Nope. Had the phone since may 6.

Touchwood, never and I've had the phone a few weeks now.
Had this problem last year with my new Desire, but returned it to HTC and they replaced the mobo without any problems.
Yep had it nearly 4 weeks and its went twice. Not in the last week or so though.

Everyone runs different apps and settings on their phones. Unless there's a specific hardware problem there's going be tons of variables to consider for those having reboot issues. I've had mine for six weeks and its never done anything wonky.
I returned my 1st one as it turned off a few times a day. Replacement has been fine.

Does reboot count as a yes?
I clicked yes but I am not 100% sure if this happened to me or not. Allow me to explain...
I was carrying it in my hand walking and I happened to look at the screen and it was showing the Samsung GT-i9100 splash screen seemingly for no apparent reason. When it went away it just went right back to where it was (no media card reading or anything).
It was strange to say the least but I have not seen it happen again since then and that was about a week ago and I have had the device for approx. 3 weeks now.
Does this sound like the same issue?

Oh sorry i forgot to mention this. No, reboots don't count as they're probably a software problem which can be fixed maybe with a new ROM or update or wtvr (i'm probably going to install another ROM eventually). And i'm not sure how a replacement will help with that, since I already have the KE7 firmware installed.
Just complete turn offs, cuz it might be a hardware problem, which can be solved by a replacement.
Thanks for the responses guys. Keep it up
Hmm, well i'm not really sure of anything, but that looks like a reboot to me. It might be that it turned off and you accidentally held the power button and turned it on, but since there was no card reading or anything, i think it's the "fast reboot" problem i've seen some people with on the forums. I hope it doesn't happen again
I've had the phone for 5 days, and I've gotten about 5 restarts.
It happens when I'm doing something. Playing with ring tones, playing a poker game app...
Just wondering if it's happened to anyone else, and if it's hardware or software related.
EDIT: 9/29/2011
I've had the phone for about 2 weeks now. The past week, I've not had any restarts. Don't know what's changed. I think there was an OTA update about last week. I"ve been using it as much as I had been - web browser, angry birds, email, etc...
Oh, about last week I also re-seated the battery. Don't know if that does anything, since the battery seem like it was seated fine. But someone recommended it. Could just be a fluke.
So, one way or another, the random restarts seem to have solved itself.
Me also
Had mine for about a week and has rebooted at least 5 times. Phone seems to hang and then rebooted.
I am coming from an EVO which never had these problems. Thought about trying a Samsung or another Photon
Yea, just yesterday when I was using my flashlight app for a few minutes. It has mostly happened when I used the led flash as a flashlight. It doesn't matter which app I use, it just restarts sometimes.
And also when I was playing a game today.

Had restarts and a few lock ups everyday. Got a replacement and no issues since.

None for me after 3 weeks.
My EVO 3D used to do it once in a while when it would lose a signal.
Those who don't have random restarts hardly at all...are you installing apps and using the phone fairly heavily?
I'm wondering if this is a hardware of software issue.
Try re-seating your battery and make sure the back is on good.I was having the restart issue and it ended up being that the rep that initially started the phone up didn't put the battery door on correctly.

Exactly. I've only had one random restart, after the OTA, but I chalk it up to the heat wave where I was working. Poor Mo-Pho got up to 119 degrees.
I would also suggest a factory reset and wipe of the internal SD, a lot of times the testing of each phone before they're put in the box can cause issues.

no problems here. love this phone!
Me I am facing this issue since I got the phone I am at that point of replace the unit or order other phone!
What do you think?
I am really so pissed how is that you see only good comments on this phone and no body mention this known issue on thos youtubbie crappy videos...
I cant believe that I paid good money for this phone and I am not the only one with the issue. Sad thing no body know if this is HW or Sorftware!
I have no problem fixing the software... we really need the hackers spending some time debugging this issue.
Had my phone for a month, and have had 3. I am a heavy user so I expect it. Best phone I ever had.

Ive had my phone for about a month, probably had 7 or 8 restarts total since I got it, two in one day during the first week but it seems better after the second OTA update. For the past two weeks I've only had two restarts. Each time it restarted I was playing angry birds and had let the phone got to sleep while in the middle of playing. When I woke it up it restarted. Sounds software related to me. Im rooted but not unlocked. I love this phone!
I get over 1 a day. Its sad. Def gonna get a replacement when I get the time

I get atleast one a day. I don't notice because at home I set my phone down a lot. It gets worse when im on the phone surfing the web. Then it seems to do it more often. Yesterday it rebooted three times in one hour. It gets annoying but im past my 30 days to return plus Sprint doesn't have any other phone that interests me.

I have the reboot issue, but I have narrowed it down. DEVS TAKE A LOOK!!
So far I can get a 100% repro of this issue if
1. I am on WIFI for DATA and make or receive a call.
2. then leave WIFI area and attempt to call out, TXT or use 3G data.
3. phone will reboot every time when that occurs.
60% repro of reboot issue with the fallowing.
1. make or receive call with WIFI on but not attached to network.
2. go into WIFI range of a known(not new!) WIFI hotspot and phone attaches to WIFI on it's own.(this will sometimes cause the WIFI, 3G, and phone signal to all appear in the task bar at the same time)
3. make a phone call, txt or turn off WIFI then attempt to use 3G data and phone will reboot.
Also this is VERY IMPORTANT!! The conditions above will not cause the reboot on it's own. If you have data updates off or leave WIFI off all day then you might never see this. Also VERY important if you receive a call when attached to WIFI and then use your phone for data only you will not get the reboot right away it may take upto 30-40 min. Also important, if you attempt to do either repro above via making a phone call you will see the dialer get stuck at "connecting" in the upper left hand side, but it will never go to "connected" and hitting anything on the dialer or the back button will not help only home, but you will notice nothing on the phone will work anymore. This will ultimately lead to a reboot!
Here is the problem as I have trouble shot the living crap out of this and it seem that either the voice/3G radio is locking up or the dialer is crapping out.
Also on a side note that when the dialer is stuck on "connecting" if you force stop the dialer it does nothing, but if you force stop the "dialer storage" it will kill the dialer, but you will still get a reboot at some point after that.
So now we know where to look at for this issue. Can any of the devs look into this as I am not sure where to go from here, but this IS the problem everyone is seeing and can be hardware or software.
Is anyone experiencing random vibrates in 3's? Like your device will vibrate 3 times and stop every once in a while, while your device is in stand-by mode, (screen off, not in use)?
Let me know if this has happened to you and if you have found a solution...
Let me know if you've heard of this, or even if this hasn't happened to you.
Any response is welcome.
Thank you.

Reserved for the OP, "deedscreen", that's me!
Ya I've experienced it. Every minute or so, it'll vibrate 3 time like you said. For my phone, it doesn't matter whether the screen is on or off. It's pretty annoying, but a reboot solves it until it starts again randomly. Come to think about it, I haven't had it happen in at least a week. I'm on cm7 btw.

No, not yet... I have had a recent family emergency so I am postponing the replacement until after the holidays.
Nope, my phone has never done that. Stock 198_6 and rooted.
Yes! It's been happening for a few weeks maybe. Probably once or twice a day? I'm on rooted 198_7.
Yes, it does
Mine is doing the very same thing since this week (after a phone format/reset).
That problem never happened before the format/reset.
I'm on a rooted stock photon and I'm experiencing this also....
it'll be random too. sometimes 3 vibrattions or sometimes just 1, but every time its different. sometimes it'll vibrate in 3 quick bursts. or just 1 time..
i found the temporary fix which was to reboot but it just occurs after so long.
mine has done it since i got it on the 1st of November
Sorry for the late reply, but yeah... I've had that issue with every Photon that I've had and trust me --- I've been through many Photons... Are you all rooted? I know that's a stupid question, but I never had that issue when I wasn't rooted, or maybe I just don't notice it...
I've been bothered by the famous Random Reboot that I haven't got ever!!!
Sent from my Motorola Photon 4G (MoPho) on Sprint, the Now Network using XDA Premium.
I am on stock unrooted and I get this maybe on an average of once every other day. It seems completely random, and usually the phone is in sleep mode.
I have something to say that may seem stupid, and I'm not trying to insult anyone...............Do you have it turned off in Notifications? If its on, it will chime and/or virbrate whenever you get e-mail or text. The # of time depends on the number of new notifications.
Something I learned this weekend when I shut off that damm chimer that would wake me at 3:00AM!
If this is an issue, I've never experienced it. Stock rooted.

There is a feature on the stock rom that saves a logfile when you press the two volume bottoms at the same time for a couple of seconds. It will initially vibrate 2 or 3 times and then once more when the logging is complete. Check you device in the internal storage for a folder named bug2go. That is where the logs are stored.
Sent from my MoPho. All typos are the phones fault.
It does it sometimes when you aren't even hitting those buttons, if you use root explorer and modify the file from "filename.file-extention" to "filename.file-extention.bak", could that stop the problem???
Hello everyone!
A few weeks ago my phone started freezing randomly when navigating through menus, when turning on the screen or just during stand by. It reboots almost every night and I find it in the morning in the "enter pin" screen. I have been using the Omega Rom series for a long time, and I was using v38 when this began to happen, but by that time I had already been with the same ROM for a long time with absolutely no problem. Yesterday I updated to v39 and the phone is totally unstable, it freezes every 5 minutes and I have to remove the battery.
How can I know if this comes from a hardware or a software problem? Is there any way to log what the phone does so I can check what goes on by the time it freezes?
Thank you very much.

you could try to do a logcat report.
did you try different kernels?
Yes I did, I tried the stock kernel and Siyah too, but I get the same problem. Any other recommendation?
I will get started with the logcat thing, I hope I can find something. Thank you!
My droid4 kep doing the same exact thing when I attempted to listen to my music player, and I ended up finding trojan and I didn't find it with any of the AntiVirus' that you find on Android I ended up finding it with pandas usb vaccine when I plug the phone in to the laptops usb port.. And it doesn't do it at all anymore
I tried 3 AntiVirus ' from Google, AVG + lookout+ .AND avast..!!! Nothing picked it up. :banghead:

if it is not the kernel, I would try to setup the phone from scratch with first, a stock Samsung rom, see how it goes, and if anything is ok, flash a custom rom and test again.
Usually, for me, I do not stop with just a factory reset but use a "mega" wipe to delete (not format) anything related on the phone even if some think this is not necessary.

Hi.
I've been having similar issues for over a week now. And have removed some programs and setting trying to find the cause. Eventually what has prevented freezing is when I turn the screen power saving in power saving settings on. I'm thinking the GPU might be somehow damaged or something.
I have only installed the official updates to the phone. Currently I'm at 4.1.2 NEE.
Ive been using custom roms for ages but got fed up with apps and certain not working so I wiped everything and installed stock ics via odin, I then upgraded all the way up to 4.1.2 via the Samsung upgrade utility but....... now my phone freezes sometimes ive never had this before. ...? Im on ella btu

I have been doing further investigation and I've seen that it is not that the phone freezes, it is just that you cannot have any interaction at all with it. The screen is blocked, the buttons do not respond and the phone does not make any sound, but I know it is alive! I know it because whenever an app is doing something, after restarting the phone by pulling out the battery I see that that process has been completed or if I dial my own number from another phone I get tone, although the phone appears to be completely dead...
Does this situation have a name and a specific solution...?
