Few questions about CM9. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I have just got this phone few days ago.
I am intrested in installing CM9, but i have few questions. If i have understood correctly, I need to install leaked ics before installing cm9 (or any other ics rom). Can this be done with mobile odin, and if can, am I able to keep the root with it? (It has function to keep root)
Also, does cm9 support usb otg? There was no result when i tried to search.
Sorry if these are stupid questions.

if you are already rooted which i gather you are just flash the latest nightly. then flash the last google apps and that is it job done. you can flash all those from recovery.
Make sure you back up your current rom and apps and then go ahead and do full wipe. Data - cache - and dalvik and also format system in mount and storage. Flash the above two i mentioned and that should be it.
Regarding the usb - otg not sure but you can ask in the discussion thread
EDIT: i went from checkrom v6 straight to cm9 if that helps.

No. You don't need to install leaked ICS first. I tried CM9 over the weekend & flashed CM7 first. Follow the instructions on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread & you'll be fine.
If you use the files linked to in the first post in the CM9 thread, they're CWM flashable, so you'll need to have a kernel installed that has CWM in order to flash them. CFRoot kernel will do just fine if your phone isn't already rooted with a kernel that has CWM. There might be Odin flashable files around somewhere, you might have to search for them.
It is rooted, yes. Does it support USB OTG ? Good question. That's one thing I do use a bit on GB & forgot to test when I used CM9. Given USB file transfer doesn't work yet, I doubt it. But ask in the CM9 discussion thread or read the FAQS/Wiki.
So in summary, given you haven't done anything to your phone yet:-
1) Root it with a CFRoot kernel
2) Go to the CM9 discussion thread & follow the install instructions in the first post.

True but once you get the hang of things and how things work with the s2 it is a piece of cake..But i must admit sometimes i get scared on what to do specially if i have to unroot and root again as i have only done it a few times...Once i stayed rooted that is it...i do all my upgrading by flashing custom roms. anyway good luck with cm9 you will not regret using it..let me know how you get on

Haha ;-) You Sir are a noble man
OP - Yep, S is right. CM9 is a very nice piece of work given they've only had leaks & their own considerable hacking talents to work with. It's not quite a 'daily driver' for me at this point, but once sources come out I'll be switching back to it post haste. I'd be surprised if the CM team don't have a stable ICS release long before other devs.

This is probably a newbie question.....

I have an at&t s2 I777.....it is rooted one i guess (it was gifted)..
I want the ICS on it...and believe me i know nothing about how to get it....
i googled and found many people explaining the process for a windows PC version.
I have a mac and if some one would please care to explain (step-by-step is much appreciated)..i attach the present status of the I777...
Thanks....
Senior members will probably scream SEARCH at you 'til blue in the face, so I'll throw you a bone since I've been stalking for far too long.
This (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878686) is a guide to Heimdall (basically Odin for Mac) find a kernal to flash (I started with Siyah http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19650906&postcount=1) and follow the Heimdall guide to flash to your GS2. Next you can download any ICS Rom (I've been using ShoStock2 since version 1.1) to your phone and flash the zip using CWM (there are a plethora of guides on this should you need it, so search.)
Check out my thread, no need for a computer to flash the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722064
I would suggest you follow the guide linked in my signature. It has instructions for using heimdall with the mac.
Do *not* install Siyah 3.4 on your phone if you are running Gingerbread stock or modified firmware. You can not use an ICS kernel with a Gingerbread system.
If you have any questions or problems as you work through the guide, feel free to post your questions in that thread.
Edit: if you already have ClockworkMod Recovery on the phone, then you can just download the firmware distribution you want and flash it in recovery.

Yes, it is based on the last AT&T release. You will need CWM to install the ROM.

Please reply quickly as i really want to install this rom QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE ASAP
Find the CM10 thread in Development, download the rom & put it on your internal/external SD card (or use the Odin version if there is one if you prefer). Either way, follow the install instructions on the first page of the thread to the letter. Done.
No need for anyone to give you numpty instructions here when they're already in that thread.

how do i install it cause it says : First time installing CyanogenMod 10.1 to your Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM:
- Make sure you're NOT RUNNING A KERNEL WITH THE MMC-SUPERBRICK-BUG. If you're unsure, flash this ClockworkMod-Recovery using Odin/Heimdall.
i have know idea what that means
please give me a noob guide

Seriously, no offence but the info you're looking for is pretty easy to find. Just use the search button and read the threads/stickies. If you don't know what you're doing, reconsidder if you're really are going to flash a custom rom.

Sgs2 ics 4.0.4 help!!

Hey,
So I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 to ICS 4.0.4 before 1-2 months. The new graphics and extra features looked really great at first, but 2 hours after using it on normal applications (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.) It froze and did nothing, like literally just freezes at the screen it lagged on. This has been happening continuously for the past 2 months and I'm really sick of it, I upgraded my phone and my dad's one (both SGS2I9100) using Samsung Kies, ever since that, it just keeps freezing like 4 times a day and I have to take off my battery and re-put it so it can reset since nothing will do this.. The old the firmware I had was the really amazingly going well and never lagged even once (I can't remember which firmware though). I'm a total noob, I didn't and don't have my phone rooted or some stuff like that, expect downloading APKs off the internet lol.
I really want someone to help me in this, I know there must be a solution since I don't think I'm the only one who has been annoyed by this, specially when it happens on a daily routine. I searched over the forums and found nothing. I know there must be something talking about the issue but I'm too nooby to understand the article titles which might be a solution of my problem.
Please help me in my problem it really bothers me and xda is my last hope...
Thank you all.
Note: please use simple terms because I really won't understand, and if you do, please teach me them lol.
Well, first of all your up for some reading.
While you go from thread to thread you'll run into the world of ROMs and flashing.
The first thing you have to know is that your device comes with 4 things:
1) Hardware (dah)
2) Kernel (link between Hardware & OS)
3) ROM (OS)
4) Modem (Baseband for your country / Region)
You are actually on 4.0.4, It's Kernel is known to suffer the brick bug issue.
Flashing is used to get the best from your device, in relation to your personal user experience. You got plenty of options like Stock Roms and Custom Roms, as well as Stock Kernels and custom kernels.
When flashing stock roms you get the chance to get rid of your carrier stuff (bloatware and animation boot) by getting an unbranded ROM (samsung official stock rom), you can either go down to previous versions (Gingerbread, ICS 4.0.3) or even go up (Jelly bean leaked ROM). Carrier branded or not, it's just a matter of choice.
When flashing custom roms you get a whole lot of roms to choose from. The most common are CyanogenMod (CM), RR (revolution remix), Omega and etcetera. These roms take the best of the stock roms and leave the worst, so you'll get a more personalized experience.
When Flashing custom kernels your trying to get the best performance for your ROM, this means you can use a stock ROM with a custom kernel.
Modems are basebands that let your carrier network function in your region / country, so if you flash a modem, your network might not work, so you'll have to flash another modem and so on.
Check all that out and if you decide to go on flashing, we are here to help you on the easiest / safest way to do it.
rembember to read and re-read all first.
you did notice this is now your official post right?
Okay I kinda get it, can you kindly please send me links that will help my problem? I'd rather downgrade with Stock ROM than a costum one.
Another thing, will it affect anything that has to do with my Carier? and does my phone have to be rooted in order this to work? If so how can I?
Many thanks.

they have plenty of stock roms.
I'd personally advice you to get 4.0.3 stock ROM. What's you carrier? I could look it up for you while you learn about flashing/downgrade.
That's what I was thinking of too, and it's Orange IL (Israel)
I need you you to tell me how do it too please

When the guy doesn't read it was a good advice to start doing it, because it's not really allowed to ask everything that is allready asked so many times.
When he actually does read, but doesn't understand (which I don't think because he's asking basic question about steps he must take) then it's maybe better to rethink if he's really going to flash something because he doesn't know what he's doing

Why don't you just flash a stock rom through Odin? No offence but I'm serious, the lack of knowledge you show here by asking about Recovery to me seems to be a sign you shouldn't root it at all, and learn a whole lot more about flashing and more if you want to.

Hi guys! I'm a noob, and I have some questions

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below

If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.
Got the GT-I9100
I got stock 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:
<< 17.04.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 with CWM 6.0.3.1 based recovery >>
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4cb3mf...3.6-signed.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/q642zb...4.93.6.tar.md5
Also I got SuperSU already installed, this means I have to unistall it and do this or can I install this kernel anyway?

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need
http://www.mediafire.com/download/q642zb02je6l1bb/PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSD-OXX-4.93.6.tar.md5
Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Hi once more, and thanks for everything! Well, I managed to lose my fear of trying it and managed to flash it using the instructions from philz tread. Everything went all right!
I live in portugal, and my carrier is vodafone, I think that the build I have is the most updated one.
Really, thanks for helping me with this!

Your next step is flashing a custom rom Have a look at the link below. Battery life is amazing on this rom.

If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

But the EMMC bug doesn't affect any S II phones with JB roms does it?
Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

I'm at work right now, so I can only do it after work. So I just need to, follow the instructions on the NEAT ROM post to flash it? They dont say how to backup your things tough but I searched in this forum and found how to do it-. So I only need to use the cwm to back it up. Does it back up EFS folder too?
You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.

How do I install Render's 6.0.4.5 Recovery/Kernel?

I've tried flashing it through rom manager, and it reboots into recovery and installs it, however the version in recovery and in rom manager is still 6.0.1.0.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Stop using rom manager! There's a very old sticky on this very subject a few posts above this one!
If you follow the install instructions in the OP of Render's thread, you'll be able to install the new recovery without issues. Read through the multiple pages if you seek other questions; that thread is heavily interactive and helpful, so it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to read through a few pages before you proceed.
But please stop using rom manager on the i777.
sent from the i777

Well, you used ROM Manager, which has a sticky about it in this subforums. You need to install the Cyanogenmod 10.2 Nightly to get version 6.0.4.5 ( http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=i777 ), then flash his ROM and Kernel.

Ok, thank you for pointing me in the right direction, but I have a new question. How do I install a custom rom (in this case cyanogen 10.2) without a custom recovery installed? It seems like a chicken and the egg situation to me. I need to install a custom rom to get a custom recovery, but I have no custom recovery installed to install the custom rom.. to get the custom recovery. I do have the android sdk installed and mobile odin pro, but I haven't found any stickied threads that show how to use them to do this. I'd appreciate it if you or anyone else could explain a bit more thoroughly or link me to the proper threads. I've tried searching but haven't found any clear answers.
I also think the AOKP ROM is more appropriate for me than Cyanogen, but I still face the same problem in that I don't know *how* to install it without a custom recovery, which I can't get without installing a custom rom..
Edit: I found this link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i777
I will try to follow these instructions.

Why you refuse to search in these forms for the CORRECT way of getting exactly what you want is very unfortunate. If you read the OP of the CM thread, instead following external advice, you'll be in a much better situation.

Please let us know if you got this to work for you. I'm not sure what this installs on your phone, but on the SGH–I777, recovery is compiled into the kernel. Normally you would install a custom kernel that is compatible with your operating system. You can use mobile open Pro to do that. If you haven't got this done yet, let us know. We can help.

I *did* search, nothing relevant comes up. Why don't you, instead of telling me that I'm searching wrong, tell me what I should've been searching for. Maybe, before you go and tell someone they're not searching correctly and tell them to read a thread, you could go and actually read that thread yourself. The very first part of the instructions say this:
Make sure you are on CWM 6.0.4.4+ before flashing ROM! Thanks to @mr-cook you can now download and flash just the recovery/kernel!

That is what I am trying to figure out how to do, and the instructions in the "external advice" that I found in this case is the correct thing to do to get CWM. I found that by searching. If you want to send me on a wild goose chase instead of actually telling me or linking me to relevant threads, go ahead, but don't act like you're actually being helpful. *Nothing* in the CM thread shows me how to first install CWM. Not a damn thing.
Edit: I managed to get CWM installed by flashing the AJK 4.9 noswap kernel using mobile odin pro. I thought I messed it up because it was taking a long time for the boot animation to finish, but it worked.
Edit: except now my home and search keys don't work..

Well, after I last edited that post I installed the rom from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574718
and everything is working fine now. I love it. I'm going to keep the kernel that is installed with it for now since I feel no need to use cyanogenmod just yet. This suits my purposes fine. I appreciate the help and advice.
