[Q] Aside from ADW, a launcher with "alternate" dockbar? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd been a big fan of ADW Launcher EX for a long time.
It seems the development has died unfortunately though.
My favorite feature was the ability to quickly switch between 2 dockbars. One had the standard 4 + app drawer button, and the other was a scrollable dock which effectively could contain many more.
This was great for phones (not really needed in tablets) where I needed 6-8 quick access apps.
The very last versions of ADW completely removed this feature, inexplicably. I'm running the version that last had this feature, which runs okay, but was hoping for more ICS features.
I cannot find any currently maintained Launcher that also has this feature (Apex and Nova Launchers don't to my knowledge). Many/most have scrollable dockbars, but no quick-switch alternate ones.
Anyone know of any?

I know Zeam Launcher (free from the market) has scrollable dock, but not sure what you mean with alternating docks.

Zeam's a known entity. Nice and quick. But no alternate dockbar.
The dockbars can be switched with a button press, or gesture. I linked mine to home. Press home while in launcher-->5 other apps pop up as a dockbar. Press home again-->back to the original 4+app drawer button. Repeat.

Ah,never knew this was in the old ADW Launcher! I use CircleLauncher to popup more apps from my home. But can't use hardware button.

I tried out TSF shell briefly, still needs some development but was a nice change from the norm
Has all apps on the main home screen with some great looking scrolling animations

Home button behaviour

The x10 mini pro has a "two-level" home screen:
the "top" hold the clock, and widgets.
the "bottom" holds the application icons.
Since there are many applications installed, the home screen extends beyond the screen width, which results in "windows", and so it is necessary to scroll left and right to see all the different "windows" and the icons they contain. When pressing the "home" button, the phone will bring up the last viewed "window" of the home screen.
Is there a way to make the "home" button always show the first (left most) "window" of the bottom home screen, namely, the left most window of the icons?.
TIA,
Mike.
In a way, yes...and in a way, no.
The screen(s) with all your apps in is known as the "app drawer". The stock launcher for the X10 Mini Pro will always do what you say, it will always go to the last viewed page of the drawer when you open it.
In theory, you could dig deep into the code of the SemcHome app and make it do what you want. I've no idea what you'd need to do, but it's theoretically possible.
The easiest way is probably just to install a different launcher. Have a look on the Market. I'm using Go Launcher Ex which does the same thing but it does let me put more app icons on one screen (I've got 16 instead of the stock launcher's 9) and you can group apps into individual folders. Or you can just hide the ones you don't need.
So this won't do exactly what you asked for, but it might give you a decent alternative.
Thanks.
Is it possible to place applications and shortcuts icons on the "top" home screen, say in the same screen as the clock?.
Thanks,
Mike
Yes, bascially. Although, again, you'll still need a different launcher for this.
A lot of phones will let you do this from stock but, because ours has a smaller screen, we can only put stuff into the four corners. Download a new launcher and you can cover your screen with app's and shortcuts as much as you want!
You can add shortcuts to the homescreen by long holding an App in the app draw and dragging away from its location to the Homescreen
Thanks all for replying.
ryant: The long press and drag method isn't working on my x10MP with android 2.1 .
I can move the app icon around in the app drawer (left and right screens), but not "up" to where the clock and other widgets live. Have you tried this on an x10MP with a stock launcher?.
Also, I've now found the "multicon" app which allows to place multiple widgets on screen, which is a good enough solution for me.

Mods wanted for home button

I won't be using S Voice a whole lot, and would rather repurpose my home key double click to something useful - such as recent apps/multitasking (as this would be much faster than holding home down). Is there a mod for this?
Also, I'd like to double click home to wake phone and unlock screen - any mods for this?
I'm on Omega v6.0, just flashed it.
Also, I'd like to do something about the wake-up delay. When pressing power or home to wake the screen up, there's a wait of a good half a second - I want it instantaneous, like my old phone was.
Any ideas?
Bump.
Afaik this delay is caused by waking up from deep sleep. There isnt much you can do, unless you want to force your phone to stay awake it will drain the battery quickly, though.
Try apex or nova launcher..
For multitasking try "wave launcher".not an ordinary launcher, check market
Editr try gesture launcher
Edit 2: or dock4droid also cool 4 multitasking

Bump for this.
I'd really like to be able to open the multitasking menu, with a single press of the home button.
Home2 shortcut in the market is.pretty useful.for key shortcuts like double click home or double click search key. Check it out

Home2 Shortcut seems like it should work (if and only if S Voice is disabled). If you have Nova Launcher installed, task switching is one of the shortcuts Nova has (so within Home2 Shortcut when you choose the app you'd like to be run, choose "Shortcut->Nova->Task Switcher"). If you don't use Nova as your normal launcher, I might be concerned about whether this causes Nova to be loaded into memory--this is a very simple test, but I can't do it because Nova is my launcher so it's already in memory.
The above technique has two disadvantages: you lose the ability to press "home" when you're already at the launcher (it does nothing), and there's an added delay before opening the launcher. I mitigate this delay by setting the double-tap time to a fast setting.
Another idea I had that might work:
- Uninstall S Voice (I think you can also rename the .apk to .apkbackup).
- Install a task-switching app (there's a very simple one on the market but it's not free--it just triggers normal Android task switching)
- Decompile the task-switching app
- Change the app namespace to S Voice's namespace
- Recompile and install the modified app.
This might make double-home-tap automatically trigger task switching without the disadvantages that come with using Home2 Shortcut. Unfortunately, I haven't yet decompiled/recompiled an app, so I probably can't give this a try until the weekend.
Edit: If technique 2 works and we want to share it as a mod, our only choice is to rewrite the app. There's no way we can condone pirating somebody's paid app.

Multitask Shortcut. Perhaps there are other apps that do this, but I haven't looked.
But it's still at least 2 button press. I'm lazy, so I'll continue with "wave launcher" that's just a swipe over screen and all your selected apps appear.

I found a way to swipe into multitasking, so I won't bother with the Home button:

nova launcher dock shortcuts

I have the ICS AKOP which has the nova launcher
I wanted to change the shortcuts on the dock. So, i clicked remove after long press.
Now i am not able to add shortcuts and i removed all of the existing ones.
Anyone know how to add new? Long press does nothing.
Like the other launchers, long press an item in the menu and you can drop it on the home screen. Then you can drag to the dock.

thanks.. that did the trick. i am used to launcherpro in which one had to long press on the dock itself to change shortcuts
I installed yesterday the AOKP m6 and i saw for the first time this Launcher. I must say it's really fast and the scroll is pretty flowing. Till now i haven't some fc.

[Q] Any way to add a Google Now icon to the lock screen?

Coming from stock jelly bean on my Nexus I miss being able to go straight to Google Now with a swipe... if there was a way to add an additional icon to the lock screen for this purpose that would be awesome. Any ideas?
Put the Google Now (Google) shortcut in your dock. Not entirely the same, but works with a swipe
Thanks! This is my first sense phone, didn't realize whatever you put in there also showed up on the lock screen. Duh :silly:
Honestly, I think I will be adding a shortcut myself. I kind of miss my Gnex swipe up.
This is what I do that has worked well for me. I use Nova Launcher to bring me back to more of a nexus look. Because I do this, I set my camera and google icons on the dock of my sense launcher and those two icons show up on my lockscreen, and this way I also don't waste dock space on Nova launcher. Works like a charm.
Here are my home and lock screen to show what I am talking about
Holding the home button for a second opens Google Now... its not the same as swiping from lock screen but it works

This does not work from the lock screen though.

I agree, although I added two activities to the list. With Nova you can drop activities to directly access features of apps without opening them fully.
I use one activity from Handcent called quick compose. It opens a tiny window with a "to" field and a "message" field. Very handy. Also I use the toggle feature of TeslaLED to give me quick access to a flashlight.
Then using Nova I can have 6 completely different apps on my dock plus app drawer.
And today was payday so that rocks.

There is also Holo Lock for anyone who wants the stock JB lock screen, although it does not work perfectly...
I use apex launcher, much the same as nova. I have a Google search in my sense dock, so it shows up on my lockscreen.
It doesn't show up on my dock in apex. I set a gesture in apex, however, that store up items Google search. Makes it almost the same ad my galaxy nexus

LG Dual Screen Launcher

I have an idea
You can try installing some launchers (like Niagara for example)
And then set it to launch the app launcher automatically when opening the dual screen. Hope it works for you
Just gave it a shot. It does work as far as the launcher opening on the left screen, but pressing home on the left side takes you back to launcher 2.
This means you'd have to turn off the screen and turn it back on or close and open the case and reunlock the phone to get it to open.
Great idea though, I thought it would force it open on the main screen, but nope!

Some launchers work like opening an app. Niagara is one of them. You can make a shortcut for it, in floating bar?
I use Nova Launcher on the main display and quickly 3-finger swipe apps to the Dual Screen if needed. My Dual Screen homescreen only has widgets on them., I don't use the launcher on it.
Could you use launcher hijack to make it work? Like the Kindle Fires solution for the stock launcher replacement, that opens the launcher of choice upon pressing the home button?

Launcher Hijack does not work, I just tried it.
I use Microsoft's launcher. And usually Swiftkeys. You would think with Duo coming out in a year these products would support this phone. I'm a little disappointed they don't yet.
I found a slightly quirky but reliable method to do this. See my attachments, same launcher on both screens. The one with the notification bar is the main screen, one without is dual screen.
It works with home launchers with a way to get to their home screen via shortcuts. I use nova
Instructions:
0. Make sure you have navigation bar selected instead of gestures in phone settings>display>navigation bar
1. Install App Cloner (the real one, not on Google Play) and make yourself a duplicate of nova or etc.
2. Backup your current launcher settings
3. Open and restore from backup on the second copy of your launcher
4. Install Pie Control from Google Play or etc
5. You can setup pie control as you like. You'll likely have the home button setup as one of your gestures. But this home button will only of course open a single launcher, you can't change it to use a different launcher on each screen. So, add another gesture that you'll use for the second screen.
6. On your selected gesture, set what it does to shortcut>nova (it will be the second nova on the list)>default page (this is the main home screen of your launcher).
7. To get to your launcher on the second screen, just tap your second screen, then do your gesture you set to the shortcut on your main screen. You'll see your fave launcher open on the second screen.
I know this isn't ideal, but it works great for me and if there's still anybody out there looking for this, here you go.
