Broken modem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I flashed my phone with the latest checkrom revoHD V6 as per Spider's instructions (full wipe). Afterwards my phone couldn't connect to 3G. Wifi and 2G work ok. So I flashed the same baseband I'd had previously, but that made no difference. So I flashed back to the restore (VillainRom V3) I'd made with CWM before checkrom. Now I can't even connect to 2G. I tried reflashing the baseband, but again no difference.
Any ideas of what to do next?
Cheers.

Check your IMEI (*#06#) and report back.
Don't post your full IMEI or anything, just say if it starts with 24 (I think) and has loads of 0's in it, that's the default development IMEI.

Hi rev,
Cheers for that. I checked my imei number, but it was blank (small panic). Having just read that some people got theirs to reappear by turning off, removing sim, and rebooting, I tried that. It worked.
I also have a efs folder back up.
I think the problem may have occurred because I flashed the modem (using CWM) while the ac charger was plugged in.
Lesson learned: ALWAYS MAKE A FULL BACKUP, ESPECIALLY THE EFS FOLDER.

[Q] Phone totally screwed?

Hey all.
I was on MIUI 1.9.2 and flashed VillainRom (wiped everything as usual) and after the reboot, I couldn't get any signal. Went to the mobile network screen and I get an error saying I don't have a sim card in my phone.
My baseband and IMEI all read unknown.
Tried restoring a nandroid with no luck.
Are there any fixes or do I need to send it off to be fixed?

Another problem with Custom Rom!
Anyway, do a Factory Reset, if it doesn't work then flash Stock ROM.

Didn't realise there were CWM modems available. All I've found are for Odin..

This might be a long shot but try toggling airplane mode on, reboot the phone and once fully booted toggle airplane mode off.
This issue has nothing to do with the Rom you flashed, (not VillainRom anyway) it seems in all your flashing you may have messed up your EFS partition, some people got it back when they flashed a stock ROM, if you don't, you may need to get in contact with Odia, he can assist you with getting your IMEI back

Cheers.
I'm now downloading stock firmware. Where would I find Odia, on xda?

*Edit*
Flashed KG3 fully, nothing.
looked inside the KG3 zip again and found a tar with EFS in the name. flashed it via Odin and all is well.
Thanks for your help.

Flashing custom ROM kills EFS

I have problem with flashing, bought sgs2 today, wanted to make flash custom rom, phone is rooted with Doomlord exploit and there is cf root kernel flashed for cwm access (flashed via odin mobile), no simlock
When I flash any custom rom, phone apk keeps crashing, there is no cellular network and no IMEI in About the Phone section. I have tried restoring IMEI with EFS pro but after reboot its the same problem. I have EFS backup and nandroid backup.
What is wrong, I have two other phones, sgs2 and note, I didn't have those problems before, what is wrong this time? Any help will be great for me, I would appreciate ideas.
Is your phone plugged in to the wall charger or a USB port.
I used a custom ROM that would not allow me to reboot plugged in. Same problems as you.
When I reboot unplugged, service returns.

I'm aware of this problem, happend to me before, but unplugging doesn't help in that case. When I delete nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 it helps instantly but returns after reboot.
I have nv_data.bak in this folder and its some old file, like 2010 old, should I deleted it or something?
solved with wipe, which gave me random IMEI then restored right one with EFS Pro (thanks a lot for Dev Team of that app)
I keep reading about people loosing their ime after a flash but never bothered to remember if the flash was via CWM or Odin.
This might already have been investigated and I've missed it but it would be nice to know if anyone has lost their ime using Odin or if it's only through CWM.
This looks like it's happening more and more so it would be good to find out the cause.

This happened me yesterday, glad you managed to fix it, I didn't have a backup but thankfully there is a market app called GSII-repair and it can restore imei without a backup, hope this helps someone

[Q] Trouble with WIFI

Since a picture, and in this case a video, paints a thousand words -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCkKkkukujI
Here I present to you my dilemma.
Before you ask, the phone is rooted, running cm7.1 nightly.
At the time of recording my modem is KI3.
I have tried about 4 modems, in the K family and no luck yet.
I cant put my finger on exactly the time this happened, but somewhere in the past 3-4 days and nothing significant happened to spawn it. (ie I wasn't changing roms or anything of that sort.)
Every modem I put on does the exact same as the video.
However generally the first boot after a flash, the wifi tends to connect, next boot = no go.
I have also used 'gs2blitzer v1.6' which is a script to clean out old kernel files and temporary bits n pieces between flashes.
So any helpful suggestions you have will be appreciated.
Do a backup with ClockWorkMod and then flash another kernel. (siyah, for example).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
I just flashed siyah as you suggested, no luck.
Still does exactly that in the video I posted earlier.

Tried a full-wipe?

are you using the i9100 or a t-mobile branded or other variant?
did you have the problem before you flashed the new rom?
im using wanamlite ics 9.1 rom using the XXLPH kernel and my wifi works fine. XXLPH is still beta i think btw
Yes it has been wiped numerous times.
Wiping individual partitions from cwm, wiping dalvik, using the cleaning script to clear old kernel stuff..
And yes it worked prior - if you read my first post, nothing happened for it to stop working. There was no flash involved to stop it working.
Oh and its an international I9100.
Some extra info on the subject.
Disconnecting and deleting the AP, restart phone, it will then connect.
If i disable wifi then re-enable it, it wont connect.
Stuck in the loop of Scanning, connecting, disconnecting, over and over...

Simcard and CWM problems

Hi,
I bought my phone on december 2011. It is rooted and I put the Checkrom V6 and the redpill kernel five months ago. For the radio, I think it was the KK5 one, but I'm not so sure. Yesterday, everything was working fine, when I turned it off before going to bed. But this morning, my phone couldn't join any network. In fact, it couldn't detect any simcard. I tried putting my simcard in another phone, and it worked, while putting another simcard in my phone didn't change anything. When I tried the *#1234# code, my phone was "Unknown" and I didn't have an IMEI anymore. I tried to restore the EFS files but it didn't work at all. So I tried to restore an old back up, but nothing changed. When I tried to go back to my latest backup, I kept on getting "md5 mismatch". I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976453 but nothing worked... So yeah, I'm kinda stuck and running out of ideas... Sorry if I shouldn't have post this thread, but I thought I could as I almost tried all the solutions given that I could find. But still, I'm sorry if I shouldn't have done it and thanks in advance if someone has a solution for one or both of my problems...
Try going back to stock Samsung ROM, flash using Odin and see if that works, just flash PDA and make sure repartition ISN'T ticked after that enter recovery wipe data+cache then reboot and then flash siyah kernel for root. Just a suggestion!

No 3G/edg/G after flashing CUSTOM roms

I can't figure why after flashing custom (non-stock branded/unbranded) roms I lose my mobile internet connection in my phone. I tried different modems to no avail. Is it safe to flash a modem, CSC code and baseband of a ICS4.0.3 stock rom to a custom JB rom (resurrection remix)?
Did you set up APN settings? If you didn't know the settings, call your operator customer service, they'll tell you everything you need to know.
Sometimes new roms erase apn settings or dont set it up.

yep, they are set up. I even tried removing and readding them.
Maybe your efs got corrupted. If you have a backup, try restoring it.

Well, I used kTool to back them up. I just did a "check EFS backup" and it reports that 93% of it is different now. Should I restore this backup?
Weird thing is I tried CM9 before and had the same problem, so whent back to 4.0.3 and everything was fine. That's when I did the EFS backup
note: the backup was done on stock unbranded 4.0.3 from Samsung Argentina (my country)
offtopic question: if my EFS gets screwed up, would restoring to stock rom fix them?

If you say efs is fine on stock rom, then yes, it would be fine. But you could just try restoring efs so you don't have to go back to stock. Stock would suck, wouldn't it?

Stock sucks man but what about the other thing I asked?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Restore stock rom to have working efs or restore the efs backup you have from before.
The problem seems to be with operators using a proxy for internet. I tried my girlfriend's Sim from another operator that doesn't use a proxy and internet was fine :/

By the way, I restored to my stock cwm backup and it still reports that 93% differs
