Some videos, no matter which format i convert them to just dont play. Some times i cant fast forward them either. For example sometimes mkvs play fine but other dont. I am running Check Rom V6 and RedPill kernel with no undervolting or governors. I have tried MX Player and this does not fix it.
Can anybody provide some insight
Cheers,
Scott
Were you able to run the same files fine on other roms? I haven't tried redpill yet but at times it could be the kernel that causes this (if you know these files played ok on other roms you've been on). I'd check the redpill forum first to see if any insight. You could always try another kernel as well and then flash redpill back if that doesn't fix it. Other times it could be the file as mkv is just a container and not a format. I haven't had any problems with mkvs here though. The one time I did it was the kernel I was using

All kernels and roms for me have had this problem. Is it the actual video file

If you can share the file I can take a look at it and tell you what might be going on. MP4 files USUALLY container AAC audio, but not always. There are a few esoteric audio types that can reside in an MP4 container that may not play with the stock player.
You can also try an alternative player, like Rockplayer for instance....
I dunno how to Share the file
I'll try the player you mentioned

MP4 wont play from SD card
Ever since i rooted my Samsung Vibrant T959, I am unable to play MP4 video files from the SD card. If I move the file to the internal storage it plays just fine. I have a 32gb SD card and would rather save the phone memory for my APPS. Any suggestions? I have tried the original root (android 2.1) not sure what the official name for it is, CM7, and currently I am running Bionix v.1.3.1. I have tried multiple MP4 files. I backed up my entire DVD library so i have multiple MP4 to choose from. I have tried about 15 different movies so far. The only videos i can play now are certain AVI files. Is there anything i can do? I have tried RockPlayer, MoboPlayer, Tried to Drag and Drop, and I have tried to use Double Twist. Files will show up in my browser, but when i select them it says unsupported file type.
MX player. If MX doesn't work for you then you phone is having issues with such a large exsd.
thank you for getting back to me... I just tried to download MX Player and it does not give me the unsupported file type message, but now it just says unable to play file. I have a 16gb card i got with my HTC HD2 (also rooted and running android) that is just floating around my house somewhere, i may try to put that card in my vibrant and see if I get any better results. Thank you again though.
ok so i have a question about the video player on our Vibrants... I have encountered a cpl of issues since i purchased the device..
1st it wont play ALL avi files... does anyone know as to why? are there specific criterias the video needs to meet? Example i have Iron Man 1 and 2 both in avi formats but Vibrant can only playback one, the other it says unsupported file type?!? what gives they are both avi...
Secondly
I have encountered some issues with ffwd and rwnd functions.. Example im watching the Wire Season 3 (all avi files) however on a specific episode i cant fast foward or rewind....
Can someone shed some information...
btw using Nero V3 w/Voodoo w/ slightly better Nero theme..
Not all AVI files are created equal, meaning the way they are created can and will affect their compatibility with various video players (like your phone). Whether the file will play depends on the type of codec that was used when the file was created.
Simply put, some may work and some may not - it's not a problem with your phone's video player. To get the ones you're having trouble with to work, download a free video file converter and convert the files to .mp4 format. Any and all mp4 files will play on the vibrant, unlike the hit-and-miss avi files.
Hope that helps.

My galaxy s2 crashes and reboot when playing .mkv file it plays for a minute then hangs (no response) then reboots. It happened using stock rom and villian rom so it might not be the issue. I suppose since the stock video player doesnt support this format but isnt the s2 capable of doing so?

The stock SGS2 is capable of playing MKVs. Have you tried a few different MKVs from different sources to see if it may just be something it doesn't like with that particular video you are trying to play?
I haven't had the problem yet on my SGS2 but on my previous phone (Captivate) there were times when a certain MKV I downloaded it did not like and would stop playing. But it was rare
I'd definitely try some other MKV videos just to see if this always happens. An MKV file from somewhere else or totally different (not from the same source as the one that does not play) just to narrow it down. I play MKVs nearly daily during my train commute to work and haven't had any problems on stock player
You can also try Mobo player - its free. Just to see if it happens on that too
Actually i used mobo player and orher player but same issue in pc it plays fine il try differrent file with mkv format il see how that works since i only tried one file so far since it supports mkv it should be the file issue but it works fine in pc thanks ill let u know if it works

Its usually a sign of unplayable format of the file .
MKV is a container with many formats .
jje
Thank you guys, its just as you guys said some formats of mkv doesnt work but others does. Tried another mkv file and it works in the default player unlike the the former mkv where the default player said that the format is not compatible. Just to note the mkv with subtitle crashed but the one without subtitle worked. Not sure if that could be the reason
Btw how to use the thanks meter?

Recently updated to ics rom, however, the stock video player no longer plays avi files as it did with gb rom. I have flashed several gb roms since (full wipe each time) and still won't play. I've tried several stock video apks from this forum too yet still no joy. I have read that Samsung have stopped supporting sum codecs on ics update (Galaxy nexus owners are having similar issues). I'm back on gb rom but avi is still not playing as I'm getting the 'unsupported file' message bearing in mind the same file played fine prior to ics update. How do I get back or reinstall the original codecs? Flashing gb roms doesn't fix it either!
Probably not the answer you want, but you could do worse than opening your wallet and buying MX Video Player or Dice Player.
I bought both, and have yet to find a file/codec that neither can play.
The stock player (I'm on GB too) borked too often for no reason on too many file types for me. Never tried it on ICS.
iv got mx player, it works when using sw decoder. use to work on hw encoder for both mx and stock player.
I have a couple of videos which play fine in MX with HW encoding, but with no audio. The same videos play fine with perfect audio in Dice with HW encoding.
Codecs are fussy buggers. I do all my own encoding with MeGUI/avisynth - no shortcuts - and still haven't found one profile for all, so I chop and change.
Only bought Dice a couple of weeks ago, but it's overtaken MX as my default player. There's a free version with intensely annoying nag banners if you want to try it.
Thanks for suggestion, but ultimately, I'd like the stock player to be working as it did with gb with hw decode. This ics update has been a disaster on sammys part, ruined the excellent vid player, ruined the phone apk wrt contact options been omitted. Maybe success is getting to them!
What version of ICS fw were you running or what ROM? I have had no problems whatsoever playing videos on ICS using stock. I use my phone a lot for watching videos and need it to function properly as I take the train to and from work a few hours a day. Were you running an AOKP or CM9 based rom?
If you still can't play when reverting back to GB, I'd suggest a full wipe, wpe cache/partition. Then flash a GB stock rom through ODIN. See if that works?
Tried that, still no joy. Was on gb kk5 rom. But now keep getting unsupported file!?
Hi all,
I am using MX player to watch videos and it seems to lag with some MKV files. There is no lag on avi/mp4 files, and sometimes even some mkv's work. Recently though I am unable to play any MKVs without lag. I'm unsure if this is how the system works, but I am unable to use the HW/HW+ decoder on any MKV files.
Today I flashed a custom rom onto my galaxy tab 2 and tried overclocking, but I haven't noticed any difference. ( I may be doing something wrong). It seems that I have the same issue with other players too.
If someone could help me out, that would be great. I'm not sure if I need a settings change, new player, different overclock values, etc. Hopefully it's possible to watch my MKV files
Edit: If someone could also suggest if there is a certain rom that helps too I'd appreciate it.

I don't know, but i could suggest you to post this in the right section, this is for the galaxy tab 10.1 (gt-p75xx) not the tab 2 10.1 (gt-p51xx) lol
