Hey guys,
I just wanted to know if the update improved the Cameras photo quality?
I've just read alot of negative remarks towards the initial camera, and was curious if they were fixed. Such as the white-balance
Thanks
Personally I find the camera quality (before and after update) to be below average. Compared to friends' phones (iPhone, Samsung Galaxy etc) the images from the Lumia 800 are inferior in terms of sharpness, colour balance etc... that's my only gripe now... the rest of the device is v good now that .12070 is installed.

I have to contradict this to an extent, With good and correct lighting the Lumia can easily out perform than most phones on the market, However with medium to low lighting conditions it does struggle immensely. I could link you to a 720p video i recorded outside in broad daylight with my Lumia the quality is magnificent. I think being 8MP it performs as it should and exceeds average with the correct lighting.
My gripe is that when recording video the microphone records too much noise and lacks richness, It needs what the HTC Titan has which is by far better and isn't far behind professional quality.
The camera itself is good, but the software/drivers are not good at all.
Please wait until the camera update comes out which should improve the camera quality a lot. With proper software this phone can take really good pictures.
Still pictures have lots of noise and stretched pixels and artifects. However on the other hand I found the HD video quality to be very very good.
With the promised camera software update this will likely improve a lot.
The auto white-balance behaviour has been much improved. However I still rely on manual settings for best results.

Question; wasnt the "promised camera update" part of 12070 or is there another update announced in the works?
---------- Post added at 01:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 PM ----------
Even after the update, I think I still got better pics with my cheapo HD7 and when I was on Android, the Samsung Vibrant..
Glad that some of the white balance was taken care of, but still lackluster IMO

No this update did not include camera improvements as far as I know, only a whitebalance correction maybe… nothing major on the camera department, but this has said to be part of a next firmware update. The battery fix was being prioritized (quite logical) and hence pushed out early without an upgrade to the camera software.

THAT sounds promising!! Hope it's soon..
Here's a unprocessed (default settings) photo I took straight from the camera. It has been cropped some though (about 1000px width) There's quite a bit of detail in the photo. And here you see how it handles harsch lightning conditions.

Nice pic.
I agree that given a strong source of light from any part of the frame, the Lumia camera with the update stands well on its own. Problem is low light levels it underperforms against even a cheap HD7. This is also unedited, taken just last Sunday when my nephew turned Eagle in BSA. Shot in a fluorescent room with no other lighting.
No burn mark anymore thank God or other obvious flaws, but still nothing spectacular..

Anyone know if a software upgrade will be able to refine the camera at all?
As it stands iphones camera ****s all over the mozarts shutter speed is too slow, needs ALOT of light to take a clean crisp picture and so on....
So yeah, anyone heard/read of a possible upgrade for it?
ps. Loving the mozart, dropped it 3 times (apprentice sparky) and no breakages. HTC know how to make a decent phone XD
thats something i would also like to know...
Can anyone took good pics on moving objects??
I hope there's some sort of fix, third party or official.
I almost bought a Mozart the other day but saw some sample shots
I thought my SGS had a bad camera!

Damn it I totally didn't mean to thank you for that!
Please tell me how the following photos aren't good? They're as close to perfect as you can get with a phone as far as I'm concerned!

Alex
the perfect photos u posted..... You have to be PERFECTLY still to take them, and even when u are.... the slightes flash of a light, movement will blur in low light.
The iphone cameras lense has an entire f-stop more than the mozarts, so as far as quality goes, the 5mp iphone camera is better. 8mp just means u can blow up your blurred photos bigger than u would be able to blow up an iphones... but when u have dark, blurry shots.... i know im using them anytime soon
Yet as i said in my original msg, in full light, camera is perfectly fine. Take a bit of light away and the quality degrades VERY quickly
Iphone has 3rd party apps that get every bit out of the camera, hopefully a program will come out on windows phone that will give us the same.
Panoramic camera ugrade app !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please!!!!!!!!!!
this is the pic I took this morning
for me I think the camera and the video recorder is OK

Quite surprised to see a handset with a xenon flash take such low quality images, what a letdown. Still wationg for the next android / iOS handset with xenon..
i dont know guys,
this looks like a damn good camcorder to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKh-dotIhTs
but ive seen other videos too were autofocus killed the whole clip.
still you cant compare it to iphone4 cam like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivosrlf0JJc
remember iphone4 is double the price and 4th generation cam
here is a nice compare of these two starting at 4:21
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eabDFVjIL20
mozart lacks in color it seems xD
What annoys the hell out of me with regard to the camera here is the button and the sound.
The button is too tight, I can't hold the lightweight phone steady when pressing it no matter how I try.
And then the sound. When you take a picture with flashlight, it triggers the sound, then flashes once for red eye reduction, and then takes the shot, flashing for the second time. Every normal person starts moving after he/she hears the sound, while the actual shot is taken some two seconds after.
I had a Nokia N79 with a 5MP camera with a Zeiss lens and it took fantastic images. The mozart ones are totally crap. 9 out of 10 are blurry for me. The noise cancelation is far to strong it it gets the focus wrong (at least a little)...
As soon as the first Nokia WP7 phones come out I will upgrade...
On the other hand there might be some issues with my camera. Otherwise I can't explain these photos: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bill/archive/2010/11/13/htc-mozart-camera-photos.aspx
Well... we have lack of control on the camera part... to be perfect.. more settings need to be done during the photo were taken... but with this Mozart... not even a single preset can be found... when you're in low light condition... you gonna find your pics in a bit "blue+ish" mode..lol....
I love to play around with the camera... for a still picture, i'm gonna share on how to create a Lomo "look-a-like" pics with your Mozart ;
Apps needed :
1. Photo FX Free
2. HTC Photo Enhancer
..............................
First , take any picture....and open this Photo FX,
Choose : Manual (brightness, contrast, vignette)
You need to reduce a bit the brightness, increase a bit your contrast... put more vignette... then save the picture...
Later... you need to open the HTC Photo Enhancer... and open the previous saved picture.... choose under "Lively" mode... and save... there you go... you gonna get a vibrant color / tone just like a "Lomo" pics... hope you guys like it...
does somebody know an app for camera with touch focus, shot controls on display and other useful settings like dslr settings ?
I've had the phone for 2 days ad have noticed that the shutter sound goes off well before the camera has actually taken the photos - hopefully HTC will fix this in a future update but for now my advice to anyone is to ignore the shutter sound.
Other than that I have been fairly impressed with the limited amount of test shots I have taken.
I am on the fence on if to get the Trophy or the Mozart. As crazy as this question sounds, with all the issues the Mozart has is the camera actually better in the Trophy?
And I am leaning towards the Trophy for a silly reason - Xenons cannot be used as flashlights.
But I do prefer the build quality of the Mozart.

I would not have bought the Mozart had I known the gun metal case was super slippery (for those people with clean, non-greasy hands) and the flashlight app (I made good use of the one on my HD2 so yes, I miss it) doesn't work.
My advise, go for the Trophy
So.. I was originally very happy with my purchase, but I just booted up Snapchat to send off a couple selfies from the new tech... And the front-facing camera's picture quality is GOD AWFUL.
It's grainy as ****, and it's got all these weird discolourations to it! Is that just me, or anyone else getting it?
Edit: Just took a couple pictures with both my S4 and Z2 to post here and show them, but it would appear that once you actually TAKE the photo with the Z2, all that awfulness goes away! Snapchat, for some reason, keeps it though. I think Snapchat might have to modify their app for this phone... And I don't see that being likely in the near future.
Here's the break-down. It appears that the built-in camera app greatly messes with the picture the front camera takes, and this might be some kinda weird feature. Anyways, here's two pictures from the Z2, one from the camera app, one from Snapchat, and a picture from my S4 for comparison.

Well either way Xperia Front Cameras are usualy horible so in some circumstances the front cam may produce horrible quality pics
Usualy this happens in lower light
Except I've found that it really /isn't/ that bad. Just that for some reason, Sony's software kinda... Post-produces the frontcam's pic after you take it. SnapChat doesn't do that, and thus, the pictures come out looking horrible.

Same here, I only have a problem with the camera when using Snapchat. Do you think it is fixable with software update? Are you on .55 or .69?
My phone is .55.
I'm on .69, and I was having this problem both before and after I unlocked.
I'm sure this could be fixed with a software update, but I have no idea how fast that would happen, lol.
SAME
Yea my z2 front camera is horrible too. Its really grainy and theres discoloration but once u take the photo the discoloration disappears but its kinda grainy. Is sony working on a slution or no?
I'm running CM11, it seems fine to me, at least on snapchat...
I understand your problem, but this is the 2.2MP front camera we are talking about, its not right to expect clear n perfect selfies especially when capturing indoors! I'm really happy about the front cam as it produces really acceptable photos! Outdoors, it is much better! I agree that there is some discolouration and grains but that is expected!!
Using the word terrible is terrible!!!
Same problem on snapchat
I used the front cam to take some selfies. Seemed okay once the pictures were processed. But in Snapchat the selfies turn out grainy only. Any solution? I
anyone got a solution for this. It doesn't feel right or logical for a high end phone

Yes that is indeed the case!! However, these distortions are not visible when I take selfies outside, even in waterfall!!
So I guess, when not even a single Human is 100% correct, how a gadget can be! Overall, front cam takes a shot which pleases my eye, and thats all I want from a inferior sensor.
Hey guys, many of us have received this great device already, now it's time to show how great (or not so great) pictures this device can make!
It could also help other people make their choice whether to buy it or not.
Please do not upload the image on XDA itself, but rather use a site like imgur, tinypic, imageshack, imagevenue to upload your pictures.
When you upload the images on XDA itself we won't be able to see the image in it's full glory, because the images are being compressed, hence losing their quality.
Thank you.

Not bad at night, although noise reduction is crazily heavy-handed, as I've come to expect from Sony.

Strangely the bokeh effect in those pictures makes it looks as if the picture is sunken into my monitor, kind of like a 3D effect.
I've not had that effect so strongly with other bokehs. :cyclops:

IIRC, auto at 8MP.
Honestly, though, Sony really needs to get a grip on their JPEG processing and/or allow RAW output. I don't question that this is among the best sensors in a mobile phone out there, but I miss Nokia's much better processing algorithms.

Their JPEG processing for their Alpha cameras isn't too good, either, which was just one more reason for me to just shoot in RAW when I had a NEX.
They are not artistic shots, but I found it after my iPhone session. For me looks pretty good as taken by phone camera.

I'm pretty sure that I've read every review and comparison review of the Z3 camera. My conclusion is that the Z3c has the best camera for a phone it's size (except iPhone 6 which probably edges it out slightly). Expanding the comparison to larger phones, the Z3 camera is comparable to the S5, which has a very well reviewed camera. Each has strengths and weaknesses but end up as a tie overall. For someone who is very into photography though, the Z3 does offer more control, if desired, than the S5, so the photographer will likely prefer the Z3.
That's my summary from having looked at tons of reviews and comparisons and is consistent with the findings of dxomark: http://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-Z3-New-Sony-flagship-Smartphone-tested
With that said, this comparison review does a good job of showing the weaknesses of the Z3 vs the best the Windows Phone has to offer.
http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/features/item/20150_Camera_head_to_head_Lumia_9301.php
The DxoMark scores for the phone cameras are actually quite close, still with the edge to the Z3 overall though. The Lumia video abilities really drop their combined score though.
As long as you're expectations are reasonable (this is still a phone not a DSLR) I think you'll be happy with the Z3c, I have been so far. It's among the best cameras currently available in a phone
Wow. I need more photos sample and reviews. Please!!!
At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I have. S7 beats it.
They must be pretty dang close in comparison. Would probably be specific to the situation. Here are the specs:
Nexus 6P: f2.0 aperture and 1.55 μm pixel size. Not a great f stop, but that's some big pixels.
S7 Edge: f1.7 aperture and 1.4 μm pixel size. Awesome aperture, especially for getting that background blurred out, but the pixel size isn't quite as big.

I think objectively s7 picks up more detail in highlights where g4 seems to be doing slightly better with shadows. I also think that g4 is better with contrast (because s7 is overly contrasty), but s7 takes the prize because it doesn't have such prominent lens flare, which got very bad in one of the shots.
http://i.imgur.com/MU54jwz.jpg
Your G4 looks like it has the flare problem ?
I really like the spectrum color, it's the only one that don't turn yellowish in low light.
I really think the G4 is better in low light than S7. Except for the flare (it could have been that the lens was smudgy a bit, who knows), the G4 took better, more detailed and overall less noisy pictures. But, more importantly, it was closer to the real lighting in those scenes. The S7 would go all nuts with yellow-orangeish tints... When I took the photos, looking at them on the phones, I saw very little differences, but when I looked at them on a 27 inch monitor I saw where and how the G4 stood out.
You definitely has lens flare problem. Check thiss thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/help/2-g4s-cameras-screen-temps-t3186732

Hi @VictorC,
This is another Victor, from Bucharest as well! Thanks a lot for your comparison shots. I would like, provided you have the spare time, to meet and go together with a 3 smartphones comparison. I own a Nexus 6p and I am willing to bet will wipe the floor with S7 in low light (and not only). We can talk on private about this initiative. :good:
Here is another one in low light indoors:

And some daytime shots (sorry if they are out of place here):

By no means do I think the S7 Edge camera is bad (far from it actually), it's just that I think it's too aggressive and, in low light, it has some trouble with finding the right white balance. Still, these things could be corrected via updates.
You have a Sony or Isocell sensor ?
Isocell

Well that explains it.
Actually it does not. I have yet to see a comparison between shots taken with S7/S7E with Isocell and Sony sensors
Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!
In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.
Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.
Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.
I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?
Light can change your thoughts
Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.
I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard
I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"
This weekend on going to make a more detailed test and on case I'm going to post some photos

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol
My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure
That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.
what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.
