At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

I have. S7 beats it.
They must be pretty dang close in comparison. Would probably be specific to the situation. Here are the specs:
Nexus 6P: f2.0 aperture and 1.55 μm pixel size. Not a great f stop, but that's some big pixels.
S7 Edge: f1.7 aperture and 1.4 μm pixel size. Awesome aperture, especially for getting that background blurred out, but the pixel size isn't quite as big.

I think objectively s7 picks up more detail in highlights where g4 seems to be doing slightly better with shadows. I also think that g4 is better with contrast (because s7 is overly contrasty), but s7 takes the prize because it doesn't have such prominent lens flare, which got very bad in one of the shots.
http://i.imgur.com/MU54jwz.jpg
Your G4 looks like it has the flare problem ?
I really like the spectrum color, it's the only one that don't turn yellowish in low light.
I really think the G4 is better in low light than S7. Except for the flare (it could have been that the lens was smudgy a bit, who knows), the G4 took better, more detailed and overall less noisy pictures. But, more importantly, it was closer to the real lighting in those scenes. The S7 would go all nuts with yellow-orangeish tints... When I took the photos, looking at them on the phones, I saw very little differences, but when I looked at them on a 27 inch monitor I saw where and how the G4 stood out.
You definitely has lens flare problem. Check thiss thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/help/2-g4s-cameras-screen-temps-t3186732

Hi @VictorC,
This is another Victor, from Bucharest as well! Thanks a lot for your comparison shots. I would like, provided you have the spare time, to meet and go together with a 3 smartphones comparison. I own a Nexus 6p and I am willing to bet will wipe the floor with S7 in low light (and not only). We can talk on private about this initiative. :good:
Here is another one in low light indoors:

By no means do I think the S7 Edge camera is bad (far from it actually), it's just that I think it's too aggressive and, in low light, it has some trouble with finding the right white balance. Still, these things could be corrected via updates.
You have a Sony or Isocell sensor ?
Isocell

Actually it does not. I have yet to see a comparison between shots taken with S7/S7E with Isocell and Sony sensors

Thought people might be interested in knowing I've started a Flickr group for the Lumia 800.
http://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/
Would love to see what others have been able to capture with the nifty little camera on our phones
I just joined the group... will try to upload photos taken by my lumia 800...
Anyone has red tint on photo taken using Lumia 800?
Mine has it when the ambient light is not strong...
i have tinted photos as well. the auto color balance is horrible. all pictures are sepia-ish
like that, i will join you too
Thanks!!
Just joined group but haven't posted yet. I've had my Lumia a whopping 48 hours at this point and haven't had a chance to really wring out the camera yet.
Hope to rectify that this weekend.
Don't see what all the complaints are about. Has more settings than my HD7 did - and all the additions are useful (I love the exposure setting). Shutter response is identical to any smartphone camera I've had before.
As far as photo color - maybe I'm jaded, but I don't think ANY smartphone camera is all that great. The HD7 surprised me because being mediocre in almost all other respects, the camera was pretty good. To me, these cameras will never replace a decent 35mm; they're a step above a Kodak Instamatic or typical 35mm disposable in my opinion. I think it's pretty much mandatory with phone cameras to have something like PicturesLab or Thumba to tart up the pictures a bit and have them looking decent.
Cheers,
Maybe after altering a few settings like white balance, you can make it behave well. But out of the box at default settings the Lumia800 is not surprisingly good.
just a reminder of 4 years ago where the Nokia N95 could deliver images comparable to a reasonably good point and shoot camera

I did a test in ambient light this evening.
I have the following preliminary conclusions:
A. Picture quality seems okay looking at the results on the phone itself
B. Contrast and saturation settings together are so agressive that you need these set to default in order to get a decent picture
C. Yes, the red burn on photos is clearly there.
D. Auto white balance is a disaster as well as the manual settings. These are way too agressive too. If these would be applied at fifty percent would be much better.
picture of apollo15rover shows the agressive auto settings. Very high contrast as shades are very dark, the grass seems too dark green, and the bright is overburnt. that it is done by the camera settings..I recognize this too in my own photos taken with the lumia.

I agree with all.. but still pretty happy the way this turned out.. Clarity and detail aren't lacking. I took with Macro focus (had not discovered macro scene yet)
I did try to take a couple with one notch up on saturation and it might as well have been solarized!
On a positive note I found something that has not been on any smartphone I have had in the past: Macro Scene PLUS Macro Focus - so I can now take low depth of field shots!
Here's another unedited photo..
All settings normal/auto except I lowered Contrast and Saturation 1 notch to "Low" each.. To me it's a bit washed out, but more easy to correct in photo program than trying to go the other way..

Recently tried to shoot some lighter color subjects and now also noticing the red burn in the middle.. Anyone discover the trick of getting rid of it?
Edit.. Must be in the white balance. Doesn't appear on outdoor photos. Also, I re-shot the interior photo with the burn using flash, and the burn was completely eliminated. Not too happy being a fan of natural light photography..

For a phone that's out of this world. For a point and shoot its perfect.
A small test-image i took with the default settings (apart from the mode [set to macro] and the flash [i had to disable it]). The focus should be on the third black key.
Hey guys,
I just wanted to know if the update improved the Cameras photo quality?
I've just read alot of negative remarks towards the initial camera, and was curious if they were fixed. Such as the white-balance
Thanks
Personally I find the camera quality (before and after update) to be below average. Compared to friends' phones (iPhone, Samsung Galaxy etc) the images from the Lumia 800 are inferior in terms of sharpness, colour balance etc... that's my only gripe now... the rest of the device is v good now that .12070 is installed.

I have to contradict this to an extent, With good and correct lighting the Lumia can easily out perform than most phones on the market, However with medium to low lighting conditions it does struggle immensely. I could link you to a 720p video i recorded outside in broad daylight with my Lumia the quality is magnificent. I think being 8MP it performs as it should and exceeds average with the correct lighting.
My gripe is that when recording video the microphone records too much noise and lacks richness, It needs what the HTC Titan has which is by far better and isn't far behind professional quality.
The camera itself is good, but the software/drivers are not good at all.
Please wait until the camera update comes out which should improve the camera quality a lot. With proper software this phone can take really good pictures.
Still pictures have lots of noise and stretched pixels and artifects. However on the other hand I found the HD video quality to be very very good.
With the promised camera software update this will likely improve a lot.
The auto white-balance behaviour has been much improved. However I still rely on manual settings for best results.

Question; wasnt the "promised camera update" part of 12070 or is there another update announced in the works?
---------- Post added at 01:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 PM ----------
Even after the update, I think I still got better pics with my cheapo HD7 and when I was on Android, the Samsung Vibrant..
Glad that some of the white balance was taken care of, but still lackluster IMO

No this update did not include camera improvements as far as I know, only a whitebalance correction maybe… nothing major on the camera department, but this has said to be part of a next firmware update. The battery fix was being prioritized (quite logical) and hence pushed out early without an upgrade to the camera software.

Here's a unprocessed (default settings) photo I took straight from the camera. It has been cropped some though (about 1000px width) There's quite a bit of detail in the photo. And here you see how it handles harsch lightning conditions.

Nice pic.
I agree that given a strong source of light from any part of the frame, the Lumia camera with the update stands well on its own. Problem is low light levels it underperforms against even a cheap HD7. This is also unedited, taken just last Sunday when my nephew turned Eagle in BSA. Shot in a fluorescent room with no other lighting.
No burn mark anymore thank God or other obvious flaws, but still nothing spectacular..

Hi Everyone, this post is not to hurt anyone. i respect all developers and everyone who contribute to this Forum
i have flashed Cloudy Pro II V1.2 rom on my G2. Everything was perfect ( one word amazing) but my only worry was Camera. i have a strong feeling that the camera has lost image in depth quality and clarity in images. i dont know which MOD was added to Cloudy Pro 1.2 rom. but still i have flashed Jishnu's & Xdabbeb Camera Mods. But the result was the same.
so i though of removing the camera apk that came with rom and tried to replace stock camera, but i failed (unfortunately stopped error) - may be the reason could be this Rom is based on G Pro 2.
i started asking suggestions everyone what's needed to be done to come on Stock 4.4.2 Camera with this ROM. but everyone suggested Xdabbeb & Jishnu's Camera. so finally i thought of a real comparison with stock camera.
though these mods are capable of more features like 4k/magic focus etc, my main concern was image quality
All Left images were taken by LG G2 Stock 4.4.2 Camera.
All Right images were taken by LG G2 Cloudy Pro II V1.2 with Xdabbeb Camera Mod.
Pictures were Clicked with same settings on both phones
Can any one suggest me how to mod Stock G2 or G Pro 2 Camera in Cloudy Pro II ROM......please i love this ****ing awesome ROM

camera mod
yeah the right one looks better in my opinion. Also the only thing I don't like about this camera is that the auto focus is slow, there is no option for continuous focus.
Hey so I had a question so you tried both xbaees camera mod and jinushus camera mod. Which was better in your opinion than the stock cloudypro 1.2 because auto focus is really slow for me.

The picture on the right is underexposed loosing details on shadows, has much more chroma noise than the left and it is more bluish. Were the lights yellow where you shoot the pictures?...

I can not make a judgement here because the right pictures are underexposed... :cyclops:
One point that much people confuse is about white balance, they think a picture has correct white balance if the whites are white and this is wrong (except for studio shoots), the correct white balance is when the picture is near to the real life, so the left should be better.
I think you should test again the cameras in two situations, night and day, in day with some trees, grass and sky and the most important thing, you should do a correct exposure compensation (brightness in stock camera) in both shoots, in the day shoots, try not to use auto WB, I dont use auto WB even in pro cameras.
For taking pictures, I recommend to use Camera FV-5 with banding disabled, is the camera application I like most, you can do exposure lock and focus lock separately, I dont like to use a camera app without that functionality.
What the mods to is to decrease the shutter speed and increase the ISO so it can capture moving objects in darker scenes without them getting blurry. This can result in underexposed pictures and more noise which seems to be the case here.
Better on left. Accept it guys, those mods dont do anything good. Imho

The statement in red is wrong, the increasing ISO increments noise as you can see in the pictures, if you increase speed and ISO respecting the equation of exposure, it will get correct exposure.
Another important point, users should try to avoid increasing ISO if its possible, increasing ISO has bad impact in the photo in noise, color rendition degrades and dynamic range diminishes as ISO increases .
You can not do magic with the LG G2 sensor, its the same crap you will find in every smartphone.

So, after using the G6 for about 3 months, i finally decided to sell it. Glad i kept my S7 edge. Well, i tried hard and really hard to convince myself to love the G6, but sadly just couldn't. It had a pretty good battery life, a very likeable design and an awesome wide angle camera ( Which i am going to miss). But, apart from these things, it was just a very very ordinary phone. Especially, when it comes to display, my S7 simply out performed the G6 in every possible manner. Not only just to look at it, but also in terms of comfort to the eyes. This is been my true observation and an honest opinion. So, the better blacks on my S7 edge and an over all punchy display ( in terms of sharpness, brightness, colors in some case and viewing angles). I eventually realised i was straining my eyes and i used to get stressed out to watch the same content which i was happily able to view on my S7 edge. But, i now miss that flat screen( i should definitely say, i have started to dislike the edge displays), the clean design and the wide angle lens, but at least to me, the display and the rear camera matters the most, which S7 edge wins hands down compared to the G6. So these are my final thoughts. Good bye once again ( With a heavy heart)

Good bye bro well get you soon with the lg v30
i accidentally used the G6 in comfort view and it was very similar to how my S7 normal looked which was funny.
S7 Edge is a great phone, for me though, from the S7, G6 is definitely an upgrade b/c battery life, dual sim, wide angle cam, hi-fi dac etc but from an S7 Edge is more like a side-grade
I'm currently using LG G6 grate phone not only just to look at it, but also in terms of comfort to the eyes. But i want to use S7 but i have no enough money to buy this phone . There are many qualities in S7 like sharpness, brightness, colors in some case and viewing angle .
And there it is again. Man you made a decision but you don't have to explain it in order to feel better. Because we don't care.
But it's only your opinion and your experience. For me, the LCD screen on the G6 is waaaay better than that pentile saturated screen, with no real colors. Remember G6 has a Dolby Vision and HDR10 screen. It can represent colors a lot better than the S7E.
What other things didn't you like about the G6?

Camera of G6 is better and on G6 you have fullvision display which is so nicee.
I was coming to my g6 from s8 and my feeling up to now is g6 better then s8, camera better, hifi dac better, battery better, the display bigger and brighter, only the design of s8 is good, but the camera is the thing i focus then the design, although i get one s8 with sony sensor, i can say camera of lg g6 is better galaxy s8, too many things for me to get g6 over s8.

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

Pictures are nice. I'm coming from a p20pro, so i'll see in the short term. With the P20pro it was hit or miss situation for pictures on the go (quick snap). As for prepared ones not too many issues. Where issues came in for me, that i hope i won't have with the N9 will be moving objects (cars, kids, animals). I'll see then.
Here you go.
p20p vs note 9 various garden pictures. quick shots, no gimmicks not trying my best.. casual quick ones.
You can open the two folders in different windows to compare. The are original sizes.

In my opinion Note9 exposure is better and overall results as well. Not to different than my S9+
EVERYTHING ON AUTO MODE, NO POST PROCESSING
My complains are indoor shots in regards to color and sharpness. Note 9 seems to produce a more saturated color or more yellowish than my note 8 and is not as sharp I would say 75% of the shots I've made compared to my note 8. Note 8 although has more noise in low light, color is very accurate and most cases pictures turn out sharper without having to retake. Fyi my couch is Grey and not brown as depicted by the note 9

f1.5 wont be as sharp as f1.7 and it will mean the camera can use a lower iso to eliminate more noise , so a slightly softer image with less noise compared to the note 8 could be expected on hardware alone

This is just a firmware thing, like a choice that samsung made, except of course the bag. Bag looks bad
Intellligent
new intelliigent and smart camera does a great job low light works very well
I don't really tweak anything when taking photos pre or post. This phone takes great pictures on both the front and facing camera with no input from me.
Anyone having issues with light glare? Never had this issue with any phone before. Took some family photos at the beach around sunset and noticed all of them had really bad glare from the sun. Then took some more photos tonight during dinner and the street lights caused horrendous glare in the photos! WTF! And yes, the lens clean and spec free.
I've not used the camera and 'a.i.' enough to dislike it like some of the reviewers, but my nerd self is impressed when it instantly knows i'm taking a shot of my dog. I've not been bothered by any of the post-processing yet. Some great detail shots up above.
I too am disappointed with the quality of indoor/low light shots the Note 9 takes. The shots taken by my Note 8, both stock and with the ported Pixel Google cam, appear sharper and more colorful. I am content with all other areas of the phone: battery life, S-pen features, stereo Dolby Atmos speakers, processor speed. It would be the perfect phone if those cameras can be upgraded for indoor scenes ( outdoor shots are awesome).

in good lighting condition, the camera does exceptionally well. but in the needs of HDR and low lighting, the camera is trash.
How about some long exposure shots in pro mode?
ISO50 at 10 seconds is amazing.
Obviously tripod required.
BUT! With the remote ability of the S-pen, it's indeed possible to capture shots with zero motion blur just like a decent camera with remote trigger...
