Right, might be wrong section, and completely sure this has been asked somewhere.
I am very keen, I just dont know where to start.
My 10.1v just decided to start screwing around. It is like it is frozen? With the screen off. Yet I can hear emails being received. And when I put it on charge, the screen goes on, yet it is in a frozen state (time stays the same) I have rebooted it a view times, no joy. So my idea is to wipe the thing, and reload the software. what does it entail? where do I start? I see all these terms, but not sure what they mean?
Please assist if I'm in the right section?
Cheers!
You're in the wrong section. This is for DEVELOPMENT only. Your post should go in the Q&A.
I'd say you can start by reading the sticky posts in the 10.1(v) dev forum.
Basic steps are:
1. Unlock the bootloader (read sticky carefully)
2. Root your device (read sticky carefully)
3. Install a ROM (verify partition and CWM)
mate check out this thread, make sure you have proper drivers in place and kies installed

good luck

Depends if you prefer a custom or a stock ROM, Custom ROM's usually have major custom changes, but the stock, yeah plain as ice.
I don't know if he want's to root it or if he has, since warranty get's void that way.

I suggest you look at the sticky posts of the development section, there is one with detailed instructions. Also look at the sticky post about posting in the correct section.

Reading the posts in the development section is going to keep you from making huge errors. There is no easy howto if you don't have the basic knowledge however let me link a few threads. Read the first post of these threads. If won't take more that 30 minutes and you will have a much better understanding of what you are about to do. Then it will be easy to do what you want.
Understand how update.zip with standard recovery works
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892090
Install Clockwork recovery (optional) HIGHLY recommended

TnT Lite

You should do this if you install clockwork to save from future problem

The basic market fix is in the clockwork thread I linked along with flashing instructions. It is impossible to make a complete step by step howto guide if we don't know your knowledge base therefore if you have a basic understanding of the terms and ways we do things it will be much to help you.
I don't mean to be rude but if you don't want to take the time to understand what you are doing then why would we take the time to help you.
Good luck and happy reading. Feel free to ask questions after you search the forums. Almost guaranteed to find your answer.
I am also in limbo with this!
yaudon,
If you are saying what I think you are saying -- no problem -- just read the stickies and particularly the ones Bad Frog put in this thread.
Too many people come here with little knowledge (as all of us did not too long ago!)
and want instant gratification -- I want it and I want it now!
If you are going to mod, you have to be willing to read and work and sometimes
suffer.
I think the results are worth it. IMHO

People have posted some great posts here. Let me do a quick recap on what it requires.
1. Root your G-Tablet.
2. Install Clockwork ( should be 0.8)
3. Download your preferred rom to install(most are already in update.zip format) and put on your internal sd card in the root directory of your G Tablet.
4. Reboot into recovery (volume up and power button).
5. Backup your current rom
6. Select install from zip
7. Reboot into new rom.
ok, so my phone was "rooted" if i can even call it that, im saying that because yes, superuser was on there, but even titanium backup wasnt working properly, so i wanted to try again. so i searched up a way to unroot it with odin. it was basically overwriting my current root with a stock samsung kernel. that's all i did, now it will make all the power-up sounds the phone usually does but it's stuck on the samsung screen. i even tried going to voodoo and doing a factory reset with no luck. please help!
check out my guide here in this section. refer to section 5 and 6...

Being newly interested in rooting and tweaking my devices (started with my S3) there are a lot of terms that are mentioned in customizing threads that I do not understand, and a lot of those threads don't have detailed instructions for someone that's new to tweaking. Is there one post somewhere on xda that lists terms, methods, etc for newcomers like me?
I don't trust any forum other than xda because I simply think its the best forum for tweaking, etc so I don't really trust links outside xda. I also know that the way some things need to be done is device specific.
I'm confused about how to "flash" something in "recovery' (such as removing the wifi notification thread), flashing a custom recovery, using Goomanager to flash, etc. Don't get me wrong; I can follow detailed instructions as long as they are there......but if they aren't, that leaves me and a great deal of newcomers in the dark.
Some of these things are done via the phone and some have to be done via PC....and many times there aren't detailed instructions so I'm unsure what I an supposed to do and don't want to brick a $700 device.
So....is this information contained in all separate posts throughout the forum? Or is there one thread per device that details it? Being as some of these things are device specific, I'm hesitant to even look in other device forums.
Thanks for reading, and any assistance is appreciated.

Well, this can be a complex arena to play in. For the S4, you'll want to download Odin v3.07 and a copy of the stock ROM just in case you break something.

ROM = read-only memory - this is the part of your phone's internal storage you're not really supposed to be able to play with (like /system, or the phone's radio for example)
The act of "flashing" is writing data to ROM
Recovery just means that you should always be able to boot your device into this mode to RECOVER from a software problem; IE: flashing a bad ROM (IE: one that doesn't work and you can't start your phone anymore).
I don't really know a whole lot more than that, I just poke around and pretend like I do =)

Thanks As I learn more, I think I'm going to make a post that contains everything I learn, so others have it all in one place.
Well, there's a LOT to learn...like I said; complex arena. So much so that there's no way to make a single post take you from newbie to knowledgeable newbie in one read.
Then there's Google;
"what is rom"
"what is flashing rom"
"what is recovery mode android"
Eliminates the need for said post
Plus, by the time you get it all written, it will have all changed ^_^
Hi,
After searching other topics similar to this I find the need to post. Please help
Just purchased a gs2 sgh-i777. Had gingerbread 2.3.4? Downloaded kies and updated to jellybean. Immediately after update reboot the battery was at critical and no usb connectivity what so ever. So dead phone no way of charging. I am returning the phone for exchange. I want the newest firmware so my question is this. How to I update prevent this from happening again. Root, backup then update firmware?
The Kies update would not normally cause that problem. It may have been a problem with the hardware, such as a bad usb port.
But, what ever the reason, if you are comfortable customizing your phone then flashing the firmware yourself would be the better choice. And, the custom firmware available in the development section performs better than stock also. There is plenty of information available on how to do things. If you are new to this, just be sure you understand what you are doing before acting, so as to avoid problems.
Thanks for advise,
I am new to smartphone mods but have pc knowledge.
As soon as new phone comes in I will flash a rom. I will be very careful but want to make sure I can reverse (have recovery) should things go wrong.

Hello Sir,
I can't install "I9100XWMS1_NeatROM_v5.4.2_Aroma.zip" on my Samsung galaxy sII I9100 in recovery mode.Cause i didn't find any option like instal rom SD.Here my mobile detail & recovery mode screen shot.
Please Help me to install This "9100XWMS1_NeatROM_v5.4.2_Aroma.zip" in my mobile.Thank you.
Um, you can't install it with Odin. Only with CWRecovery (you currently have stock recovery). You need to root your phone first. How ? Search. This has been asked/answered/covered/been done to death 108,961.358,023,196,082,475 times here over the past 2.5 yrs. However, as it's the start of a new week & I'm feeling generous, there's a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has a very simple root method.
Also, I strongly recommend you go back & read the first page of the thread devoted to that rom slowly. I smell a broken phone coming on if you don't tread very carefully going forward.
