Hi there; Could do with some help please I seem to have a series issue with my Samsung Galaxy S2 today. It started this morning; I noticed the screen was randomly turning on; for no reason what so ever. It only does it when the phone isn't charging, if the data cable or the charger is plugged in; it doesn't do it.
Its on version KE7. I have tried a factory reset, and that hasn't sorted the issue. Therefore I seemed to think it was a hardware fault, however with it not being an issue when plugged in I wondered why it might be doing it.
Tap to speak also kept coming up for no apparent reason, I say kept coming up, doesn't happen all the time, but did come up about 6 times today, when I hadn't pressed anything, which would suggest the bottom centre button could be stuck or sticky, however that seems fine; and its not been near any moisture and has been a hot day.
The phone has not ever been rooted; so no issues there.
The phone battery dies very quickly within about 4 hours with the screen turning on all the time; and the phone will randomly freeze up completely, and I have to remove the battery to reset the phone.
Anybody got any ideas? Really could do with some help
Thanks
Rich
Update: It is plugged in charging now; and the MTP Application has come up; like the data cable is plugged in. That seems very odd to me...
Don't be afraid to send it back. These things aren't cheap even if you're paying through your contact, you're entitled to get what you paid for.
Your specific issues may be down to more than one thing. My screen lights up when I've read my gmail on a different device and it needs to clear the notification. Nothing too worrying about that. The other stuff does sound like some sort of shorting though and people have been given replacements for less serious issues.
I'm tempted to get mine swapped because the wifi often won't pick up an IP address and the gps won't get a fix if the phone gets too hot. Relatively minor compared to your issues.

Yeah I think its going to have to, I've tried playing about with settings, giving it time to cool down; pretty much everything I can think of, I really can't think what it could be, it seems to be many issues rather than just one, with it only being a month old, I expected slightly more.
Love the phone, did brilliantly yesterday; used it for lots of things; then today it just suddenly went, took it of charge, and it played up the whole way through.
Given up with it now, will take it back and see if I can get it fixed, I have 24 month warrenty with my contract.
Thanks
Put your original firmware back on if you can before attempting a warranty claim .

Hi
Recently my UK TF201 has begun making an intermittent croaking noise. It does this at totally irregular timings and often without any user activity occurring at the time.
My Prime is stock and not rooted. It is not associated with any particular program or app running in the background and is becoming very annoying. I'm writing this now after having been woken up by one of the croak sounding noises.
Look forward to your recommendations.

Please post a video
I'd love to be able to, as this would have saved me having to write the description as best I could. Unfortunately though, it makes the noise only a couple of times a day. Often just the one chirp/croak sound but occasionaly it will put out a couple within a second or two of the first. I don't have the time or a memory card large enough to sit with recording, waiting for it to croak before editting it down for a video I'm afraid.
It isn't exactly like a frogs "ribbit", its more or a deep "ugggh" but my children refer to it as croaking.
I've heard an identical sound before from a friends laptop, which he brought round to show me. It made these random noises a couple of times a day for about a fortnight, before it crashed and died. I hope these symptoms are not an indicator of a similar fate for my lovely Prime.

Yea I was thinking it was probably random, so it'd be hard to catch on film. That's so odd though. Doesn't look like anyone has any idea, since no one has posted. Does it come out of the speaker, or resonate out of the whole device? Does it do it if it's completely shut off?
Thanks for the reply Jay.
I'm darned if I can tell where the noise comes from. It's occurred a number of times whilst I've been using it but unfortunately with the speaker located on the back it is difficult to know whether it's from within the unit or speaker generated. Personally, I'm 99% confident it's from the speaker, it's just the 1% I can't fully confirm.
With regard to whether it happens with the unit shutdown, I rarely do a full shutdown other than once a week and then only for a full restart. It hasn't been left off for a long period to monitor. However it does this random chirping when in use and when in standby (screen switched ogg). Sorry can't be any more descriptive.
Mine does it some times. Nothing to be worried about tho...
That sound is typical from CPUs. Some laptops/desktops do that sound too.
There was a case from some Dell XPS that were doing that sound so loud that you could hear your CPU even with the internal fan at full speed.. they were offering a free CPU change for these users.
Sometimes my laptop does that sound too (AMD Phenom II X4) and my gfs laptops (Intel i5). I have yet to find what triggers it... but all my machines have done it.
Thanks Zephyrot
Yes that's exactly the noise. The laptop that my friend had was a Dell XPS 1210. Perhaps it was just a coincidence then that the laptop died a couple of weeks after it starting making this noise.
The noise that occurs usually at least once an hour has not occurred in the 2 hours that I have had it totally down powered for investigation. This therefore also lends itself to your theory that it could be CPU based.
The problem I'm having though is that it is loud enough to wake me up when it erupts with one of these chirp/croaks. If someone actually knows why the internals make this noise and more importantly what can be done to stop it from occurring, I would be grateful.
I appreciate that down powering is an option but this is not something that I had intended to do with a tablet. I use my table at work and need to get access to it within 15 seconds of picking it up. Turning the screen off and with such a good battery life, I can readily access information on the fly, whereas having to turn it on would mean waiting up to 2 minutes which is just too long I'm afraid.
Is there anything else you can add Zephyrot with regard to describing the noise, or diagnosing that you have done for the rest of the community to be able to comment on?

There is obviously an animal stuck in your tablet, probably small frog or bird. I would RMA immediately before the animal dies.

Put an SSD into the tablet, 2 second boot time. Either that or you've got aborked speaker.

I make it short:
Yeah another wifi/ battery thread. But the only one with an actual solution for pi poor battery life after 21 update. Some people reported it helped also with the sod.
Wifi sucks battery dead.
Some people let all sorts of juice sucking bat-control apps running to find out that stock app reading is not lying: The bloody wifi never turns off even set to do so in the settings and just kills the battery of the device.
If this is your workaround you owe me a thanks . If you are an Asus employee testing poor battery issue give me credits in the fixing OTA by repairing the 'never' settings:
Go to
settings, w-lan,advanced (click on the three dots in the upper right corner, there it is), keep_wifi_on_during_sleep:
Instead of setting it to 'never', set it to 'only when plugged in'.
Now put your machine in sleep, wake it after 30min or even much less and BOOOOOOM! here we go:
You will see in the battery settings, that your wifi just has stopped pausing. Depending on how long ago the battery cycle has started you will see two shorter bricks instead of a long one as before. While waking your machine concentrate on the battery icon and you will notice the wifi-icon popping up just a second after you have woken the screen.
Of course this works also with shorter breaks but I'm not sure what is the shortest interval. Longer sleep period opens the gap in between two wifi-sessions wider. So this makes the working proof easier visible for the eye.
Sort of really a shame that Asus, Google and Nvidia have hybrid, wrongly programmed and even forgotten settings in their setup. (see my thread about the multitasking of the HTC1X http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599214 Maybe helps your multitasking issue.
But as we know, nobody is perfect .... except for xda!!
And then, many report, they don't have this problem at all. Very strange that not everybody is affected by this blind setting.
If this solution doesn't help your device,I am sorry for you. Maybe you have to stick to the bat-control app and learn how to read it, or RMA your device.
Did the job for me.
So I am ready for summer to join in, got enough juice for the IPS+ screen to stun the sun the whole day lun . Rock'n Roll
Edit 121002:
JellyBeans workaround as well.
Edit 120616:
Thank you Asus that the .28 firmware makes my workaround obsolet. Now get rid of this arm5 coding and let the bugger run !!
Edit 2:
Title changed from 'Asus you owe me a blowjob' to something less attractive for trolls.
Should be an obvious solution for everyone. But took me a hell of time to use the next best (second) obvious setting for my w-lan and get the battery saving.
Edit:
Please don't abuse my thread to flame, blame or mob your boss, retailer, dog or whomever. Only confirmation or non-confirmations welcome. If you find another or better or additional solution in the future or the past please feel free to post it. I did not have the time yet to check for the actual amount of powersafe but regarding my normal readings we are gaining the whole lost lot back and don't need to throttle down or ruin our eyes. I reckon the bat is gonna be better because now some of the ASUS optimisation hits some ground.
If you want me to fled off, I have stolen your ideas or you are an ASUS employee with no job-offer, don't PM me.
Thanks
I have been using this setting for a while and while I do get better battery life using the "when plugged in" setting than the newer "disconnect during sleep" setting, in general battery life is still worse in .21 than in previous builds and for me WiFi alone still accounts for more than 60% of my average battery usage according to the battery settings menu. For all of my other Android devices the screen is the largest single user of battery.
It does not happen to everyone. I have it on "never" and as soon as i click the power button, wifi turns off... if i wake the tablet right away (2 or 3 seconds later), i see the wifi reappearing and reconecting. So, for me, the wifi turns off instantly.
In the battery graph my wifi line is nonexistant whenever the tablet is sleeping.
I believe the wifi options are implemented correctly (sort of). But for some reason, it doesnt seem to work for some users.
Another way to save battery is to increase the wifi scanning interval... but that is for when you are using wifi.
I guess, for those experiencing the battery drain, it may be a good temporary workaround to use the solution mentioned by the OP.

another way to MAKE SURE you save battery is turn the darn thing off and shutdown and then when you need it's ready to go. I been doing this more recently and it defeats the purpose of tablet, but hey, when i need to use it, after the boot up its on. not trying to be funny.
Let's not get carried away. While a good suggestion it's far from a real solution for all the people that are encountering this issue. It's kind of like suggesting just turning off your tablet when your not using it to prevent battery drain.

What's even funnier is that the OP is serious about his discovery. Guy probably thinks ASUS owes him something.
Nonetheless, thanks for the redundant tip OP.
Auto flight mode
I always install an auto flight mode program that will turn off the wifi when the screen turns off since most widgets prevents the system from turning it off and going into deep sleep.

Your way takes far too much time for me to act spontaneous. With my changed settings it's doing it automatically again, just as was intended the 'never' setting. Unless you charge the tablet by cord, the wifi turns off while you put the tablet asleep. I say settings are messed up.

to the OP, have you noticed that when you put wifi to stay on only when plugged in, when in sleep, that it takes a little while for wifi to come back online? meaning if you use the setting you said, then put the prime to sleep unplugged, then wake it back up, wifi doesn't connect back immediately. it takes a few seconds to come back online. that's the only thing I personally don't like about it.

yeah but personally this means to me it's working correctly. For the wifi to come back on instantly it would have to keep a connection and just not transfer data, when in deep sleep it completely turns off the wifi radio. When you wake it back up the radio turns back on, and it needs to connect to the AP all over again. This means the wifi was in a deep sleep (actually turned off the tab is in deep sleep) and it is working correctly.
I really wonder why every thread in this forum sooner or later becomes a trolling/flaming thread....
So guys, as usual (*sigh*) please stay on topic.
Trolling and flaming won't be tolerated but will be rewarded by other gifts like infractions and bans.
@OP: You might think about stoping posting in red: It usually implies a high rate of aggressivity towards other members.
Even if this might not be actually true in your case, other members still might missunderstand you.
On topic: This "fix" is really known since like, dunno, Froyo times? At least this setting is there already for ages.
Apart from that it should be obvious that turning off the Wifi drains less power.
However, you had good intentions so don't destroy them by flaming other members.
If you feel attacked by any post, just report it (obviously this goes for all members)
Thanks for clearing up, Diamondback,
What has been known since Froyo x.x is still worth mentioning. Many user have just started their android career because nowadays the hardware and the software are worth it. And once in a while talking about an old known tip is worthwhile especially since nobody else did.

I've been using this option since day 1. The problem is not that the wifi doesn't sleep. It's more so that it sucks way too much power when it is on.
I have an iPad2 3g as well which I received as a birthday gift so I kept it and with wifi and 3g always on, I still get 5-7 days of use.
On the Prime its dead under 2 days if always on and 3-4 days if off when asleep.
So it's most likely an optimization issue or driver issue.
Maybe the transmit power should go to low when asleep rather than staying strong.
Who knows. Regardless this can be fixed by Asus if they really look into it.

Actually the iPad has it's SW architecture on the plus side. I think the high battery drain on the TFP (and/or Android in general) is also strongly linked to the number of apps synching in background.
Maybe it can be fixed with drivers. Lowering transmit power sounds good. Could be that Asus optimized to much for the folks complaining about wifi performance....
The setting to turn off wifi while the tablet sleeps makes no sense for my use case. I mean for a wifi only device, it makes not much sense to turn it's connection to the outside off. How will I then receive notifications on gtalk, mail and so on? If I would like to safe power that way, I rather turn it completely off.
For a phone with 3g / edge data connection it might make sense. This applies for the 3g iPad as well.
I agree, it got a bit worse with .21 but for me battery life is still awesome.
Thanks anyway for bringing it to the mind of new users. Although I wouldn't call this a fix but a workaround.

My iPad2 goes ding ding ding all night. Lots of apps syncing. 3 email accounts. CNN app, and multiple other apps.
But I think iOS uses a very low power state for background sync while in sleep compared to Android.

Not sure if it's relevant because this was posted for the GS2 but it could also help with wifi drain on the prime.

"FAQ
Q: Wakelocks "wlan_rx_wake" wake up my device constantly what I can do about it?
A: The problem is neither Android nor the kernel, but the router and the (Windows7) network. In the network properties, uncheck "IPv6", disable the service "IP Helper", "Shell Hardware Detection" and "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service", which provide ongoing Traffic. Then they scored again 98% of deep sleep."
And how you disable ipv6 on your phone/tablet is with a script but the value in the file gets recreated everytime you turn wifi on and off. So if you disable ipv6 then turn wifi off, then back on, ipv6 will be enabled again. I got around this by a tasker profile that will run every time my tablet connects to a wifi network. So it disables ipv6 right away again. You could do this in an init.d script(or in sysctl) as well but then you have the issue of it resetting itself if you turn wifi off/on
If you have tasker create a new profile for when wifi is connected, then run a shell script task, and check run as root. This is the command echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/wlan0/disable_ipv6
to enable it just replace the 1 with a 0. You can also run the command in a terminal window if you just want to test it. I did it for my phone, and I just set it for my prime so I'll see if it drains less battery with it off..

I would just like to say thanks and let you know that I had SOD problems on my prime (as bad as up to once every day in frequency) for a very long time since .21 came out, after trying your work around (several weeks ago) ever since I have not had a single SOD sleep of death issue whatsoever.
I always suspected it was dock recharging causing the SOD fault but maybe it was a bum wifi stack or something, so thank you very much my tab is much more stable because the suggestion you've shared with me.
Unfortunately it does not help any flickering or GPU bugs I tend to get on occasion. I truly hate .21 it is so god awful for GPU, SOD and storage I/O.
I should just man up and downgrade but meh, sif i have the time do it
But yeah, thanks heaps, your workaround is an awesome suggestion.
I just got my DNA recently - loving it so far. I haven't done any tweaking / rooting, etc... I've had 1 recurring issue which I can find NO information on.
Once a day, at seemingly random times, the DNA will just start ringing, endlessly. The volume on the ring is always very soft (whether volume is on max, silent, or vibrate), however it never ends unless I reboot. I've force killed every possible running application, but still it keeps going.
There are no alarms set, no calls coming in, no other notifications. While I reboot to stop the ringing, the ringing continues until the power completely drops (through the shutting down splash screens).
Any troubleshooting ideas? Anyone else experience this?
cant say that i have experienced this. havent heard anyone else complain of it either. But flashing a new kernel aand rom will likely solve the problem.

most of the battery widgets in the market have temp monitoring.
Don't check m8, GO exchange it, take advantage of your warranty while you can. Maybe you install one "wrong" app and they send you an invoice or something. Seriously, I don't know what kind of insurance you're on, around here lately they started the "no-matter-what" so even stolen, you broke it, they broke it, it broke by itself you're covered. If you don't have something like that don't take any chances.

And yes, it's most probably the temperature alarm.

This just happened to me yesterday. First I thought it was the battery temp alarm too, but my battery was only about 85 degrees. After searching the phone, and the services and the apps running, nothing would stop it. Even when I turned it off and back on, it still did it. It took a battery sim-pull for me to get it to stop.
I have a Droid DNA, and after searching, it does seem to affect other phones (at least other Droid phones)
I then did a little searching ... here are two links that helped (I think)-- I can't post links yet but i'll try to mal-form them and you can put them back together
A site: rootzwiki.com / topic / 38658-droid-dna-constantly-ringing
A site: w w w. droidxforums.com / forum / droid-x-help / 26013-droid-x-constantly-ringing.html
So, (at least in my case) the 'roaming alarm' seems to be the cause of it. I was down in my work's basement in the lab-- very poor reception. I'm pretty sure my phone switched to roaming (it's usually 1x with barely 1 bar down there). I do have the 'roam alarm' checked on in the settings.
However, what I don't get, is why it would not stop-- even after I was a full 5 bars (3g-- work repeaters don't repeat lte).
Anyway, I hope this helps...

Mine did that the other day while on the charger. It started before I woke up and continued until I made a call some 20 minutes later. One thing I discovered was all the sound options were grayed out. While it was making the noise I put it on vibrate. I also had a Verizon tech on another phone, he had no clue. He also contacted HTC, they never heard of such a thing. Go figure. For what it's worth This unit is rooted s-off and on .stock 204. This is my 2nd unit, the first one also did it when on Viper. I have seen of several instances of this happening as noted in other forums. My guess is a software programming issue in the base rom.
EDIT :
I contacted HTC there is NO overheat alarm in the unit. If it overheats it will shut down!!!

FWIW, mine is stock rom -- not rooted.
Just had this happen to me. Full battery, full 4g reception, and not running anything! I did a restart and gone for now.

Unknown cause - only restart stops it
I have the same problem and posted in another thread, but this ringing sound is not related to overheating, roaming or anything else as far as I can tell. It's happened at least 6 or more times over the last several months. I do know that if you have your buds in and it starts chirping it is a full volume blast even though the media volume is turned way down. I had that experience yesterday while at work. While listening to music I still need to hear the paging system so my music is faint, but the ringing went straight through my head from ear to ear. Battery temperature was 86 F degrees, wasn't roaming, didn't have any alarms or alerts set, nothing on the notification bar and the ring sound is not one I can pick from any list. The only way to stop it is to restart the phone. Damned annoying!
I'm hoping that the future Verizon update for my DNA (Sense 5 and a more current Android version) will fix the problem. Someday the handset manufacturers will be able to incorporate an adaptive radio that can cover a range of say 400 Mhz to 5 Ghz and we'll just work with one radio to cover all our needs and connect with any friendly source. If we had that today I'd have a HTC One in my pocket.

cant say that i have experienced this. havent heard anyone else complain of it either. But flashing a new kernel aand rom will likely solve the problem.

Phone not defective, neither Verizon or HTC have a clue what is happening. There is no overheat alarm on the unit, it will shut down when too hot.
After riding my motorcycle in the rain, my P780 started turning itself off and on. I assume the power button sort of makes contact from time to time. At first it would allow the phone to boot before shutting down and then power on. Now it's just resetting itself every few seconds.
Has anyone heard of something like this happening? My 2 problems:
1. How do I stop it? I'm afraid it will break for good with all the shutting on and off. I can't stop it because I cannot remove the battery. I am in Vietnam and don't have access to any tools. So I just here a vibrating sound every 2 seconds or so when it turns on. The screen flickers a bit, then it shuts itself down. Repeat.
2. How the hell will I explain my problem to a service? Nobody speaks English here and I am not in one of the big cities.
I have no idea if the water played a role in this. Maybe it's a coincidence. The phone is currently in a big bowl of rice. I have no idea if it will do something. It's been there for over 3 hours and the battery doesn't seem to be giving out soon.
So yeah.
Help!
edit: it stopped resetting.. Now it just stays with all three buttons lit.

Hi. It seems that the condensation played an interesting role in this problem. Let him dry few days then try to charge him again. See what is going on after...

Hi,
Something similar happened with me also. Last week I was using the phone and suddenly it slept from pocket and
fall into full bucket of water. Immediately after this I taken out my phone from bucket and saw that it was starting again and again.
Without wasting anytime I dis mental my phone and kept under hair dryer and gave heat so that all water can get dry.
It was my luck that when giving heat and assembling it. It started working.
Now it is almost a week since this incident was occurred. everything working normal.
Hope it should help you.

This afternoon I took it to a shop. The guy took the battery out, put it back in. Phone starts working. After a few hours same thing starts happening again. At least now I got a video and I can show to him tomorrow. I still don't know what the real issue is.
Indeed the power button contact was at fault. After fixing that (twice, because I managed to fill it with water again) I have a new set of problems:
1. The signal of both phone cards is awful. Useless 99% of the time. I see a lot of people have this issue
2. The security applications magically changed to chinese and there doesn't seem to be an option to turn it back to english (this coming from a mandarin speaking girl I met on a bus)
3. I constantly get the message that I cannot install applications because I have no space available on the phone. I just run the chinese security app cleaner and it ejects 250MBs of garbage.
I guess installing a custom ROM might fix this? I don't know almost anything about ROMs and it is really important I don't brick the phone. My phone seems to alteady have a custom ROM. I have Vibeui 2.0. Do you have recomandations for a stabile and easy to install english ROM?
Thank you very much

Hi. Try to install a fresh new stock ROW firmware or custom ROM called Life. From Life you could try flashing modem software from my post How about some modems.
Good luck and Happy new year.

Thank you for the answer and a happy new year to you too!
The problem is that I really have no idea how to that. Is there a page somewhere that describes the necessary steps I need to take? And is there a high bricking chance?
Thank you again.

On the third point, no space available on the phone, either you're really out of space (check it, due to weird partitioning of the internal storage, might be true, but if you are trying to install through Play store (and know you have some space left), there is a known issue with the MTK chipset and Google Play Services version, giving this error. My workaround was to uninstall Play Store (it will not uninstall, but roll back all updates), then quickly install/update apps because the Play Store will update itself automatically again (can't stop it). Very annoying, but it works... After I upgraded to KitKat, no more issues with Play Store.
