Subtle, endless ring? - HTC Droid DNA

I just got my DNA recently - loving it so far. I haven't done any tweaking / rooting, etc... I've had 1 recurring issue which I can find NO information on.
Once a day, at seemingly random times, the DNA will just start ringing, endlessly. The volume on the ring is always very soft (whether volume is on max, silent, or vibrate), however it never ends unless I reboot. I've force killed every possible running application, but still it keeps going.
There are no alarms set, no calls coming in, no other notifications. While I reboot to stop the ringing, the ringing continues until the power completely drops (through the shutting down splash screens).
Any troubleshooting ideas? Anyone else experience this?

cant say that i have experienced this. havent heard anyone else complain of it either. But flashing a new kernel aand rom will likely solve the problem.

Sounds like the internal overheat alarm. Your phones defective go exchange it

Thanks x4sper. That was my initial guess. When it does start, it is a bit warm, but nothing more-so than a heavy gaming spree would do. Are there any apps not requiring root that would show temperature statistics?

most of the battery widgets in the market have temp monitoring.

Don't check m8, GO exchange it, take advantage of your warranty while you can. Maybe you install one "wrong" app and they send you an invoice or something. Seriously, I don't know what kind of insurance you're on, around here lately they started the "no-matter-what" so even stolen, you broke it, they broke it, it broke by itself you're covered. If you don't have something like that don't take any chances.
And yes, it's most probably the temperature alarm.

This just happened to me yesterday. First I thought it was the battery temp alarm too, but my battery was only about 85 degrees. After searching the phone, and the services and the apps running, nothing would stop it. Even when I turned it off and back on, it still did it. It took a battery sim-pull for me to get it to stop.
I have a Droid DNA, and after searching, it does seem to affect other phones (at least other Droid phones)
I then did a little searching ... here are two links that helped (I think)-- I can't post links yet but i'll try to mal-form them and you can put them back together
A site: rootzwiki.com / topic / 38658-droid-dna-constantly-ringing
A site: w w w. droidxforums.com / forum / droid-x-help / 26013-droid-x-constantly-ringing.html
So, (at least in my case) the 'roaming alarm' seems to be the cause of it. I was down in my work's basement in the lab-- very poor reception. I'm pretty sure my phone switched to roaming (it's usually 1x with barely 1 bar down there). I do have the 'roam alarm' checked on in the settings.
However, what I don't get, is why it would not stop-- even after I was a full 5 bars (3g-- work repeaters don't repeat lte).
Anyway, I hope this helps...

Mine did that the other day while on the charger. It started before I woke up and continued until I made a call some 20 minutes later. One thing I discovered was all the sound options were grayed out. While it was making the noise I put it on vibrate. I also had a Verizon tech on another phone, he had no clue. He also contacted HTC, they never heard of such a thing. Go figure. For what it's worth This unit is rooted s-off and on .stock 204. This is my 2nd unit, the first one also did it when on Viper. I have seen of several instances of this happening as noted in other forums. My guess is a software programming issue in the base rom.
EDIT :
I contacted HTC there is NO overheat alarm in the unit. If it overheats it will shut down!!!

FWIW, mine is stock rom -- not rooted.

Just had this happen to me. Full battery, full 4g reception, and not running anything! I did a restart and gone for now.

Unknown cause - only restart stops it
I have the same problem and posted in another thread, but this ringing sound is not related to overheating, roaming or anything else as far as I can tell. It's happened at least 6 or more times over the last several months. I do know that if you have your buds in and it starts chirping it is a full volume blast even though the media volume is turned way down. I had that experience yesterday while at work. While listening to music I still need to hear the paging system so my music is faint, but the ringing went straight through my head from ear to ear. Battery temperature was 86 F degrees, wasn't roaming, didn't have any alarms or alerts set, nothing on the notification bar and the ring sound is not one I can pick from any list. The only way to stop it is to restart the phone. Damned annoying!
I'm hoping that the future Verizon update for my DNA (Sense 5 and a more current Android version) will fix the problem. Someday the handset manufacturers will be able to incorporate an adaptive radio that can cover a range of say 400 Mhz to 5 Ghz and we'll just work with one radio to cover all our needs and connect with any friendly source. If we had that today I'd have a HTC One in my pocket.

Phone not defective, neither Verizon or HTC have a clue what is happening. There is no overheat alarm on the unit, it will shut down when too hot.

[Q] Phone won't wake from sleep/Random Restarts

I've had the Photon for a couple days now and have noticed that it will randomly shut off while in my pocket. Also will not power back on without a battery pull.
Other things are random restarts I've been getting quite often.
During some phone calls when you make the phone call, I hear dead air and no ringing, but the other party gets the phone call but also hears dead air. I've fixed with a restart but can get annoying quickly.
Yesterday the phone was almost red hot from being idle in my pocket, only noticed because of the heat increase.
Has anyone had any of these problems or do I have a dud?
The only problem I've experienced had been one random reset while using Dolphin HD. Perhaps a rogue update is killing your battery.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
I've had a few of the same problems, my best guess at the moment is there's some bugs to be worked out. As for the random restarts....for me it was caused by an app, it was an HD wallpaper app that was poorly written. Still trying to find a cause for the dead air while calling.
Hmm, haven't had any of these happen. Though this is day 3 of me having it though

I'm glad that I'm not the only one having some problems. I'm sure it's a software tweak that probably that needs to be done.
Just an FYI, I had gotten the Photon prior to launch at a Motorola Event. Now when they gave us the phones they said we had to do an update. I did that and it does a factory reset. I'm hoping that if there is an update it won't force a factory reset.

Other than the random restarts I've experienced the exact same thing. Phone was red hot, dead air where I can't hear the caller and they can't hear me and the lockups where I had to pull the battery. Have you taken it back or called Sprint? Mine is only a day old so I think I'm just going to return or exchange it. I'm not doing repaired after just a day.

I'm torn I might just take it back to Sprint. I guess I believe it's a software issue instead of hardware. Of course I have no way to verify that yet. Maybe I'll try to root as I have the HD Dock. Hopefully the Devs can figure something out.
Wow, phone sure react different. My son and I both had the 3d. He has never had a problem with his. Mine had lots of fc's, and 1 reboot. Now I have the Photon, and these problems are listed, and I haven't had any. Only had it for 1 day though. Knock on wood.

HELP - Bootloop

Alright, so this phone is becoming extremely frustrating.
The very first day i got the rezound I had it for literally five hours right from the store and I figured i would restart it to freshen things up after messing around with setting up my home screens.
Upon my phone turning back on, it booted up to the lockscreen... froze... turned itself on and then restarted itself and it LOOPS... it does NOT get past this point it bootloops the process
So I pulled the battery a few times, then did a factory reset in hboot and the problem fixed itself, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it was just a fluke so i reset everything back up... now three days later... I restarted the phone... upon turning it back on... SAME THING... BOOTLOOPING for no reason
I have never tried to temp root my phone or do anything whatsoever. This is a 100% legit phone but its becoming extremely annoying. Im returning this thing to VZW tonight and exchanging it for another one but im torn between exchanging it for a different rezound or just straight up returning it and waiting for the nexus december 8th to come out.
There have been ALOT of reported problems with this phone from my bootlooping... dead pixels... horrible battery life... etc
Dont reboot it anymore. There is an app in the market called fast reboot.when you need to freshen the phone just push the icon and it wiill get all the free memory in about 10-15 seconds.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1
im supose to be locked into a phone for the next 2 years that i cant reboot because it bootloops?
I have seen several people with boot-looping issues.
I'm not one of them and I don't think it is rampant with this phone. As for dead pixels and horrible battery life - those issues are even fewer and far between.
I wouldn't say there have been ALOT; probably a normal percentage of definite defective units mixed with people being unfamiliar with "how things work" on a phone like this.
..... my $.02
yeah im returning it at VZW tonight for a new unit... if the second one has any issues at all that have been described on this forum so sorry i gave them two chances... returning and waiting for nexus
You also gotta realize your hearing about a ton of issues with the phone, because only people with issues are posting about it. The other 90% that dont have issues arent posting.
Anytime a new phone comes out about 10% of them are duds with the same problems you are describing. When the nexus comes out their forum will be full of threads about problems with that phone. Read thru the android forums and no matter what the phone, you will see complaints about the phone. i have been reading them for years.

I had the phone for about 7 hours three have been fighting loops. My temporary solution is to disable LTE and put my standard size battery in the device ? I don't know why, but I have a hunch that my specific device may be verry sensitive to heat issues.
I called Verizon and they show the boot cycling a known issue and that it was submitted to HTC.
The phone does not seem overly hot to Me so my hunch could be wrong

Bootloops = Heat
In my experience, Bootloops are a result of heat. The phone heats up (or the radio heats up), the phone reboots on the thermal warning, but the bootup time is not nearly long enough to cool down a phone that hot, so once the OS (or kernel) loads to the point where it starts checking for thermals, it sees a heat issue, and reboots.
I have this on my DInc which I was hoping to replace with a Rezound because of these bootloops, but of course I am going to have sit and see if this subsides (or what the Nexus people say) because ...
... you are right, you do NOT want a phone for 2 years which bootloops when you use it for 15 minutes. It is hell.
What is causing all the heat on your phone ??

I asked and called Verizon again. I found someone with a little more info.
it seems that an above average amount of devices where sent out with a corrupted OS.
The corrupt Rom is having issues with its signal acquisition and causing issues.
its heating up from consistently trying to cycle thru signal acquisition etc etc.
I kinda believe they have nailed the issue- as we booted up the device with no back cover on,and bam!- a perfect phone that functions without the reboots ( Obviously no signal),but it works.
I have a replacement coming Tuesday.
Hmmm i think mine has something like that. BUT i dont do it so much.
Had the same issue with mine last night. Removed Sim disabled all network services and replaced Sim and it worked when I enabled networks again. Mine has been set to cdma only also. I think it might be an issue when authenticating with Verizon that somehow crashes the phone.

Let's hope that is the problem since I haven't had it and would hate to see it be a hardware problem. That is something that can be fixed with an update. I think phones are getting to thin for their own good. Cases problem don't help either.
For what it is worth, my phone is charging, streaming music, and I'm on the internet with auto brightness on. The temp is reading 100F. When I first got it, I was trying to kill the battery so I streamed Netflix over 4g and it got warm but never rebooted. Hope they figure this out for y'all.

I got stuck bootlooping related to the fb chat widget. As soon as it would load, sense would restart and after 10-20 the phone started rebooting.
Non stop. I got it to boot with battery cover off (no reception).
Cover on, it would restart as soon as the lock screen was up.
Battery pull, no help.
So I did a battery pull, guessed volume down +power and choose factory reset.
No fb chat widget and no issues so far

[Q] Ghosted HTC Evo3D

I have a good one for anyone, I have a Evo3D which I am going to do all those wicked things to.. but last night or rather this am around 645. this Evo turned its self on and set off a alarm in which I had never set. when I was trying to shut off the alarm it started clicking away at the camera.. but there is no sd card in it, so it did not save them. and I had to pull the battery to shut the cell off again. the button on the top would not function the cell. this was a very strange occurrence while I was 3/4 asleep.. the cell is not activated and its banded sprint.. has anyone ever heard of this before? I have currently taken the battery out of the cell in case of ghostly occurrences.

never heard of anything like this .. if the cell isnt activated, then nobody could be remotely controlling it via the cell radio.
was it connected via wifi?
is the device internal memory write protection unlocked? rooted? are you running any type of custom ROM or software on the device?
sure sounds like a very odd occurance .. my only guess would be maybe you were a bit sleepy?
No this thing is stock.. and I'm not the only one who heard the alarm. my partner who was in bed with me heard it also.. and this morning we both said how freakin weird..
Are you sure the phone wasnt just in sleep mode. I cant see how the phone would turn on by itself. That would be the best invention ever.
ok here is the thing, I had taken the battery out and put it back in, and never turned the cell on. it was just laying there waiting for me to decide what to do to it.. IE root, rom mgr etc. When the damn thing just did this.. a self starting phone that rang the alarm at 645 am.. and when I picked it up the camera started acting wacky and I had to pull the battery to shut it back off.. weird huh.
Whatever you are smoking, you should probably share.

heres the follow up. HTC whom i contacted said " that the on off button and the hardware in the notifications for the alarm was in a stuck loop meaning that it needs repaired . so its still under warranty and is on its way back to them. hopefully it will be fixed and returned. that they have seen this on this model. Im glad someone knew what the world is up.

[Question] White noise on left channel

Hi guys,
Ever since I flashed a sense less version of ICS (not blaming the ROM here, could be a coincidence), I've been hearing white noise on the left channel when I have headsets on. I tried 2 pairs and I hear the noise with both so I know it's not the headset.
The weird thing is that the noise starts immediately after I power up the phone. I did a battery pull, connected my headset, powered up the phone, and even before the HTC logo comes up, the noise will start.
Not ROM/Software related it seems, but here's the kicker, if I flash a new ROM, the noise goes away but only for a little bit of time, after a bit of usage, it'll come back. If I listen to music, sometimes it goes away, sometimes it just reduces a bit, sometimes nothing changes.
So I doubt it's the phone that's broken, it did happen right after flashing a senseless ICS Rom. I don't want to flash a full RUU yet because there might be a solution out there that doesn't require me to go back to stock so that I can install a full update.
Has anyone experienced this?
In case anyone is interested, I went to the Verizon store and I was told that although this is not a wide spread issue, it is actually a known problem. In some units, constant noise (even as the phone is booting up) will start happening when using the headset.
The person at the store didn't even check my phone, he simply started the process for a warranty replacement.
So if that happens to you, it's not the ROM, it's the phone itself.

Definitely interference from something because the noise changes as I open/close apps or just flip through launcher pages.
I have the same exact issue but my warranty through Verizon is void since I traded my iPhone 4S to someone for the Rezound. Mine was working fine and one day it just started having this issue. Took it in and they told me they couldn't help me since I voided my warranty by trading (plus I don't have insurance on the phone).
Contacted HTC and the told me that it was a known issue and to contact their warranty company to get it replaced/fixed. The warranty is still good on the phone, I just have to send it to NY with a letter explaining my issues. Kinda worried about just putting the phone in a box and sending it on it's way without a paper trail of some sort.
Glad you were able to get your phone replaced. Good to know I'm not the only one here that had this issue.
I also started having this issue, it didn't show up until about a week after having the phone, though. Nice to know it's one of the things covered under warranty that's easy to get worked on, though.
I've had the cpu noise issue on three different Rezounds now, HTC says it's fixable in software. I don't know when we will see a fix though, if ever.

Alarm makes no sound

Okay, I'm new, and I searched...but didn't see anything pertaining to this.
So I hope it's okay to create a new thread.
I just got a Certified Like-New Replacement HTC Rezound from Verizon after having so many problems with the Thunderbolt that I demanded a new device. Enter the Rezound.
The replacement is fairly nice. I'm enjoying ICS and it doesn't have the issues the Tbolt did.
However.
My long-term alarms don't have any sound. If I go to bed at midnight and set the alarm for 8am, confirm it's checked and it says "This alarm is set for 8 hours from now." At 8:02am someone else in the house wakes me up and I look at the phone and it has the screen as if the alarm were going off, but it is not making a sound. I have checked alarm volume and made sure it is up. Just for kicks, I also make sure I leave the ringer up all night so that it's not on silent/vibrate. It is on the charger, for what it's worth - and my Tbolt charger, since the Rezound did not come with one.
I tested the alarm myself a few times by setting it for 5 minutes in the future. It works fine, on and off the charger. 10 minutes, still fine. It just seems to be the ones that are 6 hours or 10 hours in the future...they will not make a sound if the phone has been idle all night. A friend of mine thinks it has to do with the phone going into a deeper sleep overnight. Not sure. All I know is I'm doing exactly what I did on the Tbolt and the alarm was one of the few things that worked right.
Now I'm in this predicament. Anyone else had this issue, or know what to try?
I'd like to avoid a hard factory reset if I can. Those suck.
I have no taskkillers running. The only questionable apps I have so far are Lookout (I like the missing device function) and maybe Astro.
Everything else is pretty vanilla. I don't have any "Lol Free Timer" apps, etc.
Also while we're at it, my GPS is weak. All 3 services: standalone, VZW, and Google are enabled. GPS is turned on. I can even see the dish icon flickering in the taskbar. But after 10 seconds in Maps, it will say Your location is temporarily unavailable - if I'm under any kind of cover. My car, any type of building...even in my home where I sit next to my mother who also has a Rezound (brand new as of August) and hers works fine. In the open air, mine will work too. But by comparison with my mom's Rezound...mine is significantly weaker.
Just to recap...
- My alarm makes no sound when it's an alarm that is set for a later time in the amount of several hours
- Ringer, media, and alarm volume are all up
- No task killers
- Works fine if it's set just for a few minutes in the future
- GPS is weak.
Anyone have any magical fixes to this, perhaps? I'd hate to have to get a new device.
Hopefully I've been descriptive enough here to not be too noobish
Thanks folks.
Very nice and descriptive post. I like the summary at the end.
Unfortunately, I don't have any solutions for you.
Your alarm issue may have something to do with being in dock mode or power saver/sleep mode. See if the alarms sound if you keep it on a regular wall charger. Only possible fix I could think for GPS would be ruu. Flash the global leak or the ics update before that if you havent already. Not guaranteed to fix it though. Good descriptive post, but are you rooted and what version OS are you on would be helpful as well in the future.
