Has anybody tried to flash radio from Desire to Thunderbolt in order to get that ***** running on wcdma/gsm in London for example??? I'm new to IT with mechanical background so asking what makes sense to me... Also would ROM from Desire work on TB or am i talking about "jet engine on a bike"????
Please help i really need to have TB running in UK
If you want to carry around a large 4.3" paperweight, then feel free.
Not much help it was ha ha
How high the risk of bricking, is it 100%???
Doubt a rom will boot, but won't brick it. You'll just end up having to reflash a compatible rom. Radio on the other hand... I wouldn't attempt.

did it work fine, was it same type of broadband as the original???
I think you're forgetting those are 3g phones. If you flash a 3g only radio on the thunderbolt, it's not going to work out. Maybe the rezound would work because it has the same LTE chipset, but I'm skeptical and it's not something I'd really want to try.

Sorry...neither phone has a "second generation" LTE chipset. They're both using the Qualcomm MDM9600 LTE chipset.

I honestly don't think its been officially tried. No kind of previous docs stating "oh noooo, bricked my phone" or "wont boot" nothing. Just angry mods saying "if that worked, they would've let you know by now"

Yeah took us a few attempt's to go in to space, another few to land on moon....
if i'll go ahead and try it out would you guys suggest a phone that is related to thunder bolt the most(hardware/sofware wise)??? Is it Resound or is it DesireHD???
i hate it that only a few ppl have the thunderbolt outside of the us or a zone without a CDMA company im from Romania and i did unlock the phone using the XTC - Clip but the radio...its messy i tried to change it to gsm and it just returns to the previous selected thing...i tried shutting down radio then selecting GSM and then turning it on ...it stayed GSM but no signal
Any of the GSM abilities outside of LTE in the chipset for the device would be locked by the radio firmware. Firmware is of course proprietary to Verizon and modding it is technically illegal I believe. That doesn't mean you can't go and try to flash something from another device, but I'm not going to be the one to try it. Only one worth trying is the rezound though. I'm not an expert on radios in embedded devices, but if the radio is isolated totally from the system, then I don't see why it would not work as the higher level RIL libraries on the Rezound are the same.
However, don't take my word for it and run and flash and blame me if it bricks of course

I think that is good news.
So just a thought, surely their GSM radio is not locked down to Domestic GSM networks - wonder if we can steal their radio image and pop a sim card in???
Just a thought since its been a fairly hot topic.
Best news I've heard all day! Anything to bring the photon to a much wider audience.

Anyone know if RSD Lite is capable of flashing a new radio image? If it is, I'll test flashing that to my phone. Although I'd still need a SIM card to test out.
Well now i know to hold onto my phone when im in Japan. One time i left my EVO next to me at the airport, and she flew away. not like they can use that phone there, but they will sure know what a Photon is. ha ha
yeah that would be one fast easy solution to unlocking the domestic GSM radios. be interesting if that works. and if it does.... lets see if the people who offered money on the bounty pay up lol

Can someone explain the current situation with 4G not working after unlocking the boot-loader I believe and will that be fixed anytime soon ?
Don't quote my on this, im NOT at all a dev. But i believe its something to do with the RSA Keys getting screwed up when unlocking bootloader, and i know that there are a few devs working on a fix and we generally don't push them for an ETA, they are working on it in their spare time and we are more than thankful they're working on stuff for our photons. Again im not a dev so don't quote me on the RSA Keys, just something i read a while back and *believe* is the issue, if im wrong feel free to correct me and correctly answer the OP's question. If your wanting to have a rom and still have 4g, theres a longer process you can go through to maintain 4g and still have a rom, but is a long process from what ive heard. Ill post link to it below if your interested.
Maintain 4g with Alien(or any rom)

I wouldnt ask for an ETA but the devs are great, it'll be out before you know it!
If I understand correctly, 4G is just Sprint's CDMA WIMax? I'm getting a Photon for use on my carriers GSM network and they don't have LTE or anything (just HSDPA/HSUPA I think).
So losing "4G" when unlocking wouldn't affect me correct?

Hey guys, I'm a noob, please don't hurt me
I'm an American living in Japan and I just bought my first smart phone...the EVO 3D (3G) for AU by KDDI...I'd post a link, but I'm not yet allowed.
Their non-3G network was CDMA...so I assume that their 3G is also CDMA....can anyone confirm that?
Under that assumption (CDMA), we're still waiting for ICS, so I'm wondering what you'd all recommend I upgrade my phone to while I wait. I'm not a fan of the stock Android 2.3 that came on the phone, and I'd really like ICS....but if there is something I could use now, that might be fine with me.
Also, what are the basic steps I need to follow, I found the sticky thread in the dev forum, but I'm not sure what stickies would apply to my situation. I'm guessing I'd have to start with a root kit, and go from there....but please fill in the gaps, thanks

Lol I see.
Chances are that you will not be able to activate any CMDA phone from overseas on a network here in the USA. The big networks like verizon and sprint will not allow foreign IMEI numbers to be submitted to their system for activation.
Do you happen to know what frequency the cdma network you came from runs on? Look behind the battery

When I had AU by KDDI when I was living in Japan is was CDMA. As far as I am aware the Japanese version wasn't able to be rooted using the CDMA methods here in the development forum. Also the ROMs here would not work on your device and would actually need to be slightly modified to include files from your device to work, but you don't have an ICS ROM to use for replacing files.

That's kind of the conclusion I came to, after running through all the different root/unlock methods, I came across issues in every single one, and my skill / confidence isn't high enough to really make a go at figuring it out.
Only thing I haven't really attempted is downgrading from hboot 1.5 to 1.4, partially because my software version is different from the instructions, and soft bricking the phone makes me nervous considering the potential incompatibilities.
I think our phone is more or less the same as the sprint phone, just on the Japanese frequency. I'm hoping that the sprint announcement means we will also be getting ICS soon... but who knows
Dear EVO 4g LTE owners,
At the moment I own a Samsung Captivate, I imported it from the USA more then a year ago. I'm actually quite fed up with it, it has a lot of speed issues and other issues like randomly turning itself off.
I really want to have an EVO 4g LTE, but since they don't sell it in my country, I'm forced to buy it through eBay. I often see phones with a bad ESN.
My question is if I can use it here for calling and data internet(we have GSM networks here)?
Can I unlock it, so I can put my own sim card in it?
Oh and will I have warranty on it?
Does anybody know if it has Dutch(Nederlands) (NO NOT DEUTSCH) language on it?
By the way; if I'd buy it, I'd flash it out of the box
The 4G LTE is CDMA and LTE, so it won't work on the GSM network in Rotterdam. Also, there is no user accessbile SIM card slot like other LTE devices, so you definitely wouldn't be able to swap out the SIM. Also, I'm pretty sure ESNs that are flagged as bad won't work on the carrier to begin with because they reported stolen or otherwise tagged as bad because of unpaid bills on the account or something. Maybe that wouldn't affect your service if you used a different carrier, but that's a moot point here, you won't be able to use this phone on any other carrier to begin with.
The LTE doesn't have a SIM slot that would allow you to use it on a GSM network. The only SIM that it has is embedded and inaccessible without taking the phone apart and even then, I don't think it's as simple as just popping yours in.
Edit: ^Beat me to it.

Thanks for replying,
Hmm I didn't read the specs well on PA I see. My network (Tele 2) provides LTE, but only in the Amsterdam area...
It won't work. It is designed to work on Sprint towers exclusively.
I have seen options to have it work on other US networks(boost, cricket, etc). Not for anything international though.
Consider a HTC One X as the exact same option.
Good luck.
Look for an International HTC One X in your area. Same phone, different look.

ESN dummy, really need help.
I'm getting a great deal on eBay for a Galaxy S5 on Sprint. It has a clean ESN, I checked it, however I dont know if the phone is unlocked. Will I be able to pop in an Indian GSM sim card into the phone and use it without any restriction?
If you have any skill flashing phones [and have a donor phone], I would recommend flashing the bad esn Evo 4g LTE to PagePlus. That's what I did.
I acheived 3g data too, though that part was hard.
If you're interested in this, let me know and I can try to post some of the guides/links I used [I used several].
I've never flashed a phone to a different CDMA provider so I thought I'd ask here first and see if anyone had knowledge of how to do this? Or point me in the right direction to somewhere to learn how to? I've unlocked the GSM radio for use on att already and I'm sure it's a similar procedure, but I followed a guide to do this and have little experience with it. Thanks in advance to anyone that has information on this.

The CDMA providers blacklist phones from being used on other CDMA providers networks. "Flashing" in this sense is stealing and ESN/IMEI from an existing phone and cloning it to your phone. Not only is it extremely risky for your hardware, it is extremely against the law and cannot be discussed on these forums.
Certain phones like the Rezound and the Dinc4G have additional feature of GSM radios added for compatibility with oversea networks, you aren't really flashing anything so much as the phone reconfigures itself for GSM or CDMA depending on what kind of SIM card it finds.

Umm. Not true at all actually. I had a P+ dealer switch over my phone with a bad esn (mother in law didnt pah her bill) and they didn't use a "friend" phone. It doesn't require stealing a phones imei or anything it requires a lot of work to port it to a different carrier, but doesn't require anything illegal. Not to mention what you're talking about is also based on the staye you are in. In the states it js legal as long as you aren't copying two have two phones on one service and is completely legal ( state dependant) if you own both phones. Check your facts.

as far as using it on gsm networks, yeah its possible you just need to either do some things (I could dig up a link if you want) on stock and have it kinda work, or find a rom that supports it and flash that (recommended, what i'm gonna be doing). and flashing phones to other networks i am pretty sure is illegal, i know from experience, i tried to work that out on xda and they sent me away saying this isnt a topic allowed of these forums, so if you still want to know about carrier flashing i suggest another forum
but anyways just making sure i am following you right, you want to gsm unlock but want to use it on virgin mobile (a CDMA network?)

It should be possible, I've gotten as far as getting the NV values on both radios, but it seems as the 9k wants to search for signal on 800mhz only, at least according to DFS.
The Thunderbolt is able to get 3g working on Boost/VM/etc. at least from what I've seen. Considering the similarity between it and the Rezound I was hoping it would be easier...

Flashing phones to different networks aren't illegal. It is a state dependant thing. I went and had my note 2 flashed over at a business in the middle of a bestbuy, guitar center, more big businesses. (Aka, big businesses near ~ not a shady place)

It is easy, but only to people that already know how to do it. The process is similar for most phones and doesn't require a lot, but most that try to do it dont know what they're doing and it takes them forever. What we need is a good electrical engineer.

Quick update:
The Rezound can work on Sprint-based towers, at least with leaked global (4.03) and stock global (4.05) radios. It took me couple of days of fidding via DFS, but right now I do have 3G working, albeit with the stock ROM complaining that mobile data isn't working. Trying out couple of ROMs to see which ones is usable.
Most important thing is that the 8K radio needs to be set to NV_ONLY but that 9K can be set to RUIM preferred. Also, flashing the firmware (from the recent 4.05 global update) will reset the 8K radio to RUIM, which is a good thing/bad thing. Good thing is that if you ever want to NV reset (since hard resets do not seem to wipe NV), flashing the latest firmware/radio should get you back to RUIM/stock PRL/blanked #. Bad thing is you need to fiddle with some of the settings in DFS again, but at least it's only for the 8K radio so far.
Another thing that probably made it work was to use the same PRL from the phone Sprint thinks you are using. For me this was the 61009 PRL. Profile info only needs to get stuck into the 9K radio and I don't think you really need to bother with the NAM2 stuff. But again, I've done too many fiddling to be able to say for certain.
