Download a recovery image of your choice (I recommend TWRP 2.0)
If it's in a zip format, extract the IMG file and copy it to where you have fastboot located.
In a command window, use cd to navigate to the appropriate location that fastboot is stored
reboot your phone into Bootloader (Power on while holding Vol-down key)
Select FASTBOOT on the phone and plug into PC (it should say FASTBOOT USB on the Phone)
in command window, type fastboot flash recovery <name_of_recovery_image>.img (Obviously replacing <name_of_recovery_image> with the file name of the recovery image) and press enter, let it proceed until it says OKAY.
Should work after this.

Hi,
I have just unlocked my evo 3d gsm on htcdev.com. After that, I have flashed CWM. Last, I installed virtuous eclipse beta3 but it stucked on HTC logo. Waiting 15 minutes didn't solve problem then i reinstalled it and kernel_shooteru_S-ON. But unfortunately these can't work. What should I do?
I have HBOOT 1.49.0018 - unlocked - s-on - cwm 4.0.1.4

have you atleast unlocked your bootloader is the first question...and if so easiest, do you have root access?... way i found to flash a recovery is like this:
have a fully charged battery
boot into your hboot screen and select fastboot
plug the phone into the computer with the data cable
once the phone is loaded open a terminal or ms-dos window
navigate to where you have the fastboot.exe command and make sure you have your new recovery as "recovery.img"
then type in fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
and then let it write it to your phone then unplug it and reboot into your new recovery

first you have to write your recovery to that partition and like if you download teamwin recovery rename it to recovery.img etc....then you can boot into the new recovery
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
(This will reboot you into boot loader)
Then to flash recovery
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name.img
(Change "name" to the name of your recovery. )
Then you should be good.

That's because the new hboot cannot flash kernels. Easiest method is to download flashgui from the market which will flash the kernel for you.
Thanks for the quick response... so all i need to do is download the app flash a kernel and then flash the rom through twrp???

Download a rom to your computer. Place the rom.zip in the folder where you have adb. Also, extract the boot.img in the same folder. Open adb on your computer using command line and boot into fastboot on your phone. Use the cd command to change folders to wherever your adb is located and type adb devices to make sure you are connected. Then type fastboot flash boot boot.img. Once you do that you can push the rom zip using a different command that I forget. Even better than reading my response, search Google for "flash boot rom fastboot evo 4G lte" there's an xda thread that walks you through it.

adb reboot recovery

That is the wrong command.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot is flashing recovery as your rom, then it is loading and you are loading a new rom which overwrites the boot.img you just flashed therefore never having a recovery. every time you flash "fastboot flash boot *.img" it is killing your rom. flash recovery properly and reinstall rom
