hello
i rooted the phone and installed recovery , downloaded custom rom and placed it by mistake on the EXTERNAL SD instead of the internal , and i formatted the OS (without making a backup) , and then i found out that CWM doesn't support external SD on the GS2 .. so now i'm stuck without a OS..
i googled a lot and i found only 1 topic about the same problem , and the solution there was to flash stock using odin , so i looked for the stock rom that i had (Pelephone Israel) and i'm downloading it, and its taking like forever to be completed ..
my question (which i couldn't find an answer to anywhere) whats the difference between flashing a rom via CMW and Odin ? can i just flash it from Odin instead of waiting another hour or 2 till the download is done and then flash it , reroot and flash recovery then flash custom rom ?
another question, when flashing a custom rom vua CWM , does it change the kernel ? (while Odin doesn't ?)
i'm a little confused here and i would appreciate any help (by the way the GS2 is my fiend's and its the first time i try flashing one)
Flashing via odin: You can only use tar files, and it boosts your custom binary count.
Flashing via CWM: It uses zip files, which is the most popular format for most roms. And it doesn't boot your custom binary counter. It's also harder to mess up flashing.
Pretty sure that's right. Just use CWM.
Edit: CWM only changes the kernel if the kernel is within the rom's zip.

thanks for the fast reply
do you confirm that flashing stock via Odin will solve my problem ? any worries of a brick there doing that?
what happens if i flash (via Odin) a firmware that uses a different kirnel from the 1 installed?
thanks again
as long as u're following the instructions right i'm sure you'll be fine..
if you are flashing via odin, PDA file is the ROM which usually includes a kernel.

the thing is that there are no instructions .. someone told the OP to flash original firmware via Odin and thats all .. i couldn't find any information anywhere thats why i got confused and i'm asking here ..
what i'm downloading is the exact original firmware i had before .. i have CWM installed but apparently its useless in my case , and i can enter download mode ..
what i'm planning to do is flash the firmware i'm downloading via Odin (its either 1 PDA file or 3 different files , thats not the case here ..) , and all i need is a confirmation that i'm safe ..
thanks

You can safely update the official firmware using odin and you won't bork anything by that method. I hope you have enabled the USB debugging mode in your mobile or else odin might not recognize the phone.

Buddy i already told that 7zip just puts in tar format but do not convert the files in the tar components(Mdem, etc)
You might explain what you are trying to achieve by putting a zip into a tar .
Are you trying to make a CWM zip file flash-able via Odin .
jje
Can it be done ?
Lol, that sounds cool. Anyway, I think I'll keep flashing tars with odin and zips with CWM because what you sugest scares the **** out of me. Anyway I'll keep reading this thread out of curiosity.
so your trying to make an update.zip file into an odin.tar file to flash in pda?
I think he ment if you download (for example) new clockwork recovery version in zip format (ment for flashing thru phone recovery) can it be transformed into .tar (ment for flashing thru odin) !
I would also like to know this.

Tar To Zip
I dont know why you are trying to flash a zip via odin by converting it CWM works just fine if u have the latest kernel. I did find some old cwm kernels were not seeing zip files on my sd card make sure you have the latest. From here K13 or k14 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 bottom of the page worked for me.
im curious about this, ever since i rooted and flashed my kernel, i cant properly install ANY CWM roms. on aborts drring verification. I was consierding repacking the ZIP and flashing with ODIN.... just annoying i cant flash any of my roms
Thats usual if CWM is 3e not 4e .
jje
I would also like to know if its possible to repack cwm .zip file into ODIN .tar?? Why? I dont want to have root. I tried with yaffey-v0.2 but for now, no luck.
Only problem is to make a working system.img. Tar package can be done with commands in cygwin or in Samsung tool kit...
Help anybody??

You are in the S2 Forum here. Which version of odin and which FW are you trying to flash? Whats the error message you get?
Yes it can be done and it's pretty easy to do. Google is you're friend. I've converted devil recovery and also modems and all work fine with odin.
Hi,
I'm trying to root and install a custom rom on my I9100 ..
But everytime I install a custom rom+kernel via clockwork .. I get bootloops and clockwork can't mount anything (also if I manually mount it in menu it can't find anything)
I can reflash stock roms via ODIN .. so I didn't brick it .. also I can obtain root via de CF-root kernel.. Everything works ok.. up until I flash a custom one..
I've tried different roms and kernels..
What went wrong if the phone can't mount partitions? (I did not yet touch the re-partition function in Odin, since it works if I reflash stock rom I figured the problem is not in the partition table)
I'm using stock rom:
PDA: XWKK2| Modem/phone: XXKI3| CSC: XEUKH2
and CFroot kernel:
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_KK2-v5.0-CWM5.zip
If I flashed those 2 .. and it's working .. what would be my next step if I'd like to install the Insanity ROM with the VOID.echo kernel ??
Thanks in advance ..
If I flashed those 2 .. and it's working .. what would be my next step if I'd like to install the Insanity ROM with the VOID.echo kernel ??
Read the Insanity rom install instructions .
Followed by reading the Void kernel install instructions .

Thanks for your reply.
I did .. but if I do the "pull battery" thing right after flashing CF-ROOT .. clockwork doesn't seem to work.. When I start it by doing volume up+home+power .. its shows a black screen..
I only get clockwork to work if I reboot after flashing CF-root...
But apart from getting the rom to work .. I'd really like to know what went wrong if clockwork can't mount anything ?? Is it a wrong kernel? wrong firmware? radio trouble or just a bogus flash ??
I'd like to have a better understanding of what is going on, this way it is easier to try and fix it...

Understood .
I would reflash the cwm and root and even pick a different kernel .
In clockwork recovery mounts and storage you can format cache data system then pull battery and reflash a clean root via Odin .
jje
how about flashing roms and kernel via odin? or are u afraid that it will increase your custom binary count? because from my experience.. flashing roms throught CWM recovery doesnt always work.. odin has been my sure way to flash many things..
No .. I'm not afraid to up my flash counter .. it already says 17 (and proud ) ..
How do I flash a custom rom in ZIP via odin ??? I cant just select the zip file in PDA ... ?
Thanks for your replies .. I do like to solve this .. but I still don't understand what causes this problem ??
if I flash a customrom it can't mount anything.. I can reflash stock rom 2.3.5 via odin that works fine .. but also if I try to flash older stock roms, it can't mount anything as well :S ..
Just tried to flash the stock KDD rom package (with kernel as well) .. and after flashing it reboots and goes to the original samsung recovery menu, with a lot of failed to mount errors :S
It's really bugging me that I don't even know what causes this problem .. :S
Hmm .. was just thinking ..
If I move from 2.3.5 .. should my device be re-partitioned as well ??
Can't find any PIT files though :S
try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
keep reading there is instruction on how to flash official roms via odin and there is also link just search for the roms u want... csc is also included plus stock kernel
if this works try to flash custom kernel (i recommend speedmod it has preroot installed) on stock roms and if it works u can try custom roms lol
RTFM huh .. ..
I did my readings .. I know how odin works .. I understand how to put back original firmwares.. Just read it again to make sure I didn't miss anything..
I just don't understand why only stock 2.3.5 works on my device :S ...
As if my phone is locked to that firmware :S ..
All these on Intratrech's thread should work on any SGS2 as long as I ONLY flash the stock package via odin (as instructed) right ??
already tried flashing to the old bootloader, I whiped my phone several times in CWM and original recovery ..
I just don't know why my phone is acting this way ..
never heard of that kind of problem and just to confirm u do thave i9100 one right? not i9100g or other version of S2
as far as I know it is just the i9100....
Model number says GT-i9100 and so says the bootsplash..
so... to sum up ... if I cant flash older stock firmwares via odin .. something very weird is going on ??
yes... if u cant flash older or newer firmwares then something is really wrong...
have u tried to connect it to kies and see if there is any update on firmware? if so try to update via kies and see if it works

also do u know why it doesnt read any of the zip roms on my sdcard?
No, it won't make a massive amount of difference if you flash firmware for another country. What country are you in/what telco do you use ?
No. No idea why CW Recovery can't read any of the roms on your SD card. Sounds like CW Recovery might be broken.
well im from australia with Vodaphone
well i could run the zips just fine before i flashed my phone but after i flashed it, it cant read anyfiles i even tried another sd card same result
I'm with Vodafone as well. Download/flash KJ1.
As I said, something obviously isn't working if it can see any files on the SD card. Flash the stock firmware & we'll go from there.
thankyou, im in the progress of flashing with odin and i put that big file into PDA but were do i put that 5mb kernal in odin? or do i not neet it

Kernal is part of PDA file does not require a separate kernel flash .
jje
um what does that mean, do i ignore it when flashing with odin, i just put the big 500mb file in the PDA section and pressed start i didnt use the 5 mb files
god it didnt work i flashed it with GT-I9100T_VAU_I9100TDUKJ1_I9100TVAUKJ1_I9100TDUKJ1.TAR.md5
and it stuck at the loading S screen then goes to the vodafone screen back and forth??
are you sure your backups are not just on your internal sd and not external?
i managed to install it, but now i cant root, i folowed the rooting guide exactly and succefully flashed the kernal with odin but it says i havent rooted yet
I tried to flash a firmware via odin and it stucks to factoryfs.img.now i cant open my phone. When im flashing every firmware va odin it stucks at factoryfs.img.i tried to wipe everything from the stock recovery and retry but i had no success.when im flashing kernels i have no error.so i was wondering if i could flash cf-root and then when i will be into recovery push files via adb to internal sdcard.is this possible?if yes tell me how.If not tell me other ways to unbrick my device
Which firmware did you try? Try to flash a stock firmware. Go here and pick up the latest ROM and follow the instructions it is very well explained

i flashed a stock firmware.i tried this and i had no result.if you can answer this i told about cwm and adb i would be very happy
try another cable.
I had similar problem because of a poor cable ordered from e-bay.
even if you are using the stock cable, try another one as it might be damaged.
gokhan thanks for your help but it didn't work.if i format the /system partition will i be able to get into download mode?
I don't see how you could get Odin to recognise your phone in order to format the system partition if you weren't able to get into download mode.
So I guess I'll play Captain Obvious...Can you get into download mode ?
If not, does Odin recognise the phone when you hook the phone up to a PC via a USB cable ? (a long shot I know but I'm trying to think of anything that might work here).

You really need to start giving more information.
Excactly what rom did you tried to flash? And yes, you can just flash CF-Root and start flashing from recovery. If it is possible to push the files true adb, I don't know. But you will have adb for sure in recovery.
And why are you flashing? It looks like you have really no idea what you are doing.
the problem is solved.i flashed a cwm 9 rom via odin and now im ok.now im flashing chechrom.i had checkrom and i undervolted too much.the phone closed but accidenatly i had ticked the set on bot button.my external sd is broken and i didnt have a checkrom backp into my internal sdcard.so i decided to flash an official firmware and then flash again checkrom.this is the story but now my problem is solved so you can lock the thread.thank you all

Thnx for the quick response
I think the problem isn't cm9, when I was trying to install the from I couldn't boot to the cwm recovery because I forgot to root my device. Then I rooted my s3 with cf something root kit and then my signals were gone. I have the international version so my phone should be factory unlocked so I thought I should install cm anyway cuz that might solve the problem. But it didn't. I really like cyanogenmod and don't want to revert back to crappy touchwizz . The problem was there before installing cm9 but after rooting my phone.
Please any help. I really need to use my phone.
Thnx

You should reinstall everything from the scratch mate, so revert your device at stock (using odin), then flash the correct [email protected] kernel and finally if everything is working flash cm9.
Edit: if your device is locked i think you can unlock it easily, search in the forum you can find out everything you need for this.

Okay,
I have downloaded my firmware file but i noticed that i need three tar files for the flashing precess through ODIN but i downloaded only 1 file *.tar.md5
no clue now what to do
Update: I tried to extract the file using splitfus but it didnt work.
Update 2: Okay now I have Installed my stock firmware and it seems to be working now.. But should I risk installing the CM9 again ?

- launch Odin
- load that ONE FILE on PDA section
- put your phone in download mode (volume down+home+power)
- connect the phone to computer, wait for drivers to be installed and ODIN to find your phone (you will see a message in Odin)
- click start
- don't touch the phone until it's done. It will boot alone
Also, it might be a good idea to wipe data / reset to factory before and after flash.
You could find all this info with google ....
On the topic, I have a similar issue. My phone was factory unlocked , and got locked after flashing latest stock firmware. Downgrading didn't solved anything. I am searching the forums right now, but it seems like all fixes are dated.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, it will be appreciated.
Thx
Hey rsndetre,
Thnx for the post, but sorry I already did that and it worked ..
Here are the method I used to get back my device back to normal and got my sim card working and again reinstalled cm9
1- Downloaded Toolkit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
2- Flashed Stock Boot Image
3- Flashed Stock Recovery Mode
4- Downloaded stock firmware from http://fus.nanzen.se/
5- Flashed stock firmware using Odin (your method above)
6- Rooted the device again (using odin and CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4)
7- Downloaded and placed cm9 and google apps package in SDCARD
8- Installed Rom Manager from Play Store.
9- Downloaded and Installed ClockWorkMod from rom manager and booted to recovery mode using RomManager
10- Then factory resetted, formatted the cache and installed the CM9 and GAPPS V11
Then my phone was good to go.
My phone is up and running, thanks rsndetre, Arsaw and TecQuality for your replies. I appreciate your time
Thanks
Muzammil Ahmed.
