Sorry guys, I know for sure this must already be answered somewhere, but I can't find the answer (I have searched).
I'm helping my friend upgrade to ICS (I know how to use odin etc. I had Galaxy S before) but I wasn't sure will flashing from generic HK Gingerbread to the official European one (LPQ) cause all the apps etc. to be wiped?
I (think) I recall this happens if the CSC isn't available on the new firmware, in which case it switches to KOR, but the phone is already set to KOR.
I know some people say a wipe of all data is advisable, but I want to avoid it if possible.
So my question is will flashing LPQ automatically wipe the device?
It's not an absolute must but if you don't wipe data you'll be sorry
Not a MUST, but advice yes..
Why not TRY without? Of course a full backup first incase some fekkups..
IF not buggy or other after update, fine..
IF buggy and unusable due to bugs, restore to prevous.
But with Kies, Titanium and other apps for backup and restore almost
everything, or manybe even EVERYTHING, I cant see reason why people
as so scared of do backups and whipe ALL for be SURE..
Nothing personale to OP with that saying, but I have been IT technician for
20 years, and the fear of backups amuse me hehe.

Hello - I didn't like the updates I heard about in the factory 2.3.6 ROM update, so I skipped it. And, I'm rooted.
So, a few questions:
Can I upgrade directly from 2.3.4 to ICS from a rooted phone? Or do I need to step-up to 2.3.6 first?
Do I need to actually unroot before I do any of this?
Can I re-root once I go ICS?
I've heard that the best bet is to do a factory reset after upgrading to ICS. If I do this, is the best bet to do a Titanium Backup app & data backup/restore process? Are there any better solutions to capture all my data that I'd lose with a reset?
Any info/insights greatly appreciated. Note: I have searched far and wide on XDA for answers to these questions, but I could not find any direct answers that made me feel confident enough to move forward. So, any direct response appreciated.
Thx.

1. yes, you can upgrade straight from 2.3.4 I've done it.
2. you don't need to unroot before - the upgrade will unroot you.
3. your best bet is NOT TO FACTORY RESET AFTER UPGRADE - IT COULD BRICK YOU BECAUSE OF A KNOWN BUG IN FACTORY KERNEL
4. If you want rooted version of upgrade look for the odin.heimdall version the Creepyncrawly put in the development section.
or you could try Semi UCLE5 that i have linked in the signature. It looks like the stock upgrade but it is smoother, among other things.
Good luck!
Jon first of all, you can always upgrade to any new update regardless of your Android version so it's a Yes to your first question. Secondly, whenever you update to a stock ROM your device gets unrooted itself so you'll have to root it again.

Jack Man & uetfreak - thanks! Great feedback.
A couple follow-on questions for Jack Man:
I've read about the kernel bug, but THANK YOU for reminding me that it would affect a simple factory reset. Yeesh, that's a pretty serious bug when a standard reset could brick a phone. So, one remedy, as you say, is to go with UCLE5. Smoother sounds ideal to me (I've heard that ICS on GS2 is a bit jittery on the homescreens, which totally stinks). But if I go with OCLE5, that's a custom ROM so that means I'll lose the ability to do the OEM upgrade to keep all my apps & data intact, correct?
If that's correct, what's the best way to ensure all my settings, contacts, apps, data can be easily restored on a wiped phone? I have Titanium Backup + Root. I assume I'd keep root with OCLE5? And would I just run a TB restore on apps & data (and not system settings)? Are there any system settings I can backup/restore safely between ROMs/OS versions?
I've never flashed a custom ROM so I don't know how y'all keep all your stuff intact as you switch around!
Thx.

Well, first, since you have never flashed a custom rom I would suggest reading until you're sick of reading before flashing. It will pay off in the long run. Regarding flashing from 2.3.4 up to Custom UCLE5 and keeping all of your apps and contacts - I'm not sure how that would go, honestly. For me, my contacts and calendar are saved on my computer through MSOutlook and I sync them with MyPhoneExplorer without any problems. Most of the apps I use (which is not a lot at all) I don't bother backing up when I flash roms and wipe data clean. I have backed up some in the past with Titanium Backup (pro version is worth it), but only if I know absolutely that I need the data from them. Otherwise, I have just done fresh installs of apps because I have read so much about people having ROM issues from restoring apps with titanium.
About losing the ability to do the OEM upgrade - If you ever want to you can, it'll just take time, and yes, you would have to wipe data anyway to go back to 2.3.4 then use KIES. Kind of a pain if you ask me. Plus, ask anyone here on custom stuff - once you go with a custom ROM, you won't want to go back to stock - EVER.
Hope this helps. feel free to pm me if you need. I'll be on the road for the next few days. remember - READ as much as you can. start with the "stickies" in the top of the main thread with a little pin on the left.
p.s. one more thing. Get yourself a usb jig. it's only a few buck online. once you start flashing roms you may want to try other ones. If you make a mistake somewhere, a jig can get you out of a jam quick.
Make sure to factory reset after. Ive read many problems with notifications messing up until the reset was done. I've done it no problems. On two seperate s2 i777s. Its always best to do this after a big update to the next version

Good idea. I do resets if I come from gingerbread too. But I know with this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948) you have to make sure you have the kernel that is based off of the stock kernel - AJ's kernel to safely factory reset. I think you will get a boot loop if you factory reset with the Siyah installed. I could be wrong, but I remember getting a boot loop on mine when I had siyah installed. Maybe it was because i did a reset from settings/back up and reset/factory reset and then formatted the sd card (since I had so much useless crap on there, luckily backed up on my pc).

You're kidding right? No do not tell him to factory reset with the stock kernel. If his phone has the big he could burn out his emmc chip. Then he would need to pay mobile tech videos to jtag it.

you have to flash iOS on your phone first before you can upgrade to cupcake, immediately update to donut before rebooting, then you have to go through eclair, froyo, and you will find yourself at gingerbread. DO NOT REBOOT AFTER FLASHING GINGERBREAD!! you have to flash ICS during the shutdown process....if you miss your cue, you will have to start all over
So the official JB update through kies from Samsung is nearly here.
When the time comes and i plug my phone into my pc and fire up kies and it says new firmware update released, if i do nothing and just hit update, will i lose any apps or contacts, anything like that. My phone is all stock and not rooted.
Do i need to back up anything on my phone, before updating the firmware through kies to the official release?
Much thanks for any help.

Anyone who doesn't do a back up before updating is a fool.

Usually no. It does not wipe data it just updates rom. However its been said the the official version via kies will need to re-partition so it may do.
It will clearly tell you whether you will lose data or not so just pay attention.
Contacts are synced with your google account so no need to backup those. You can save your apps/appdata with Titanium Backup and restore to new rom but you will need to root device.

Yeah, but what if your computer crashes in the middle of flashing? Some guy just posted that he dropped his phone in the middle of a flash and the USB cable disconnected. What if that happens? Or a power outage?
Plus, not everyone syncs their contacts to their Google account (why not, I couldn't tell you), so there's also that.
I back up before doing anything, just in case. That way, if something unexpected happens, I have something to fall back on.

And at what point did you see my advise not to do a backup?
He asked if kies wiped device so I answered. I never advised either way whether he should backup or not so I'm not sure why you replied as if I had told him not to.
Personally I dont really do Nandroid backups that often since all my apps/appdata are backed up my TB regularly, my sms/mms are backed up automatically and contacts/calenders etc etc etc are synced to google so it doesnt take long to restore stuff back if doing clean install. Only time I use Nandroid really is if I find a rom I like and make allot of changes I'll do full backup before testing a new rom/rom version etc, But mostly I'll just restore apps etc after fresh install.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but where you said "usually no" could have gone either way. He really asked two questions. I interpreted your response to be in answer to the "Do I need to back up anything" question. Not the "will I lose anything" question.
Is this possible? The full details are I had my phone stolen, and got a new one with android 4.0.4 on it. I have on my computer a copy of my latest backup of my old cognition gingerbread rom. Can I just use CWM to recover to my old rom, or do i need to first downgrade to a gingerbread rom, and then recover?
Thankyou very much for assistance
Edit: Also, I don't actually want to use the old rom, I just need the contacts it saved, afterwards I'll wipe everything and install a clean ICS mod. In case there's any way of doing this without having to revert
You'll probably need to restore the backup with a version of CWM close to the one the backup was made with, you can often have problems restoring if you're using a CWM version a lot (say 12 mths or more) newer than the one you made the backup with.
So I'd probably go GB/with a rooted GB kernel first, restore the backup & go from there. I mean, it could work first try with an ICS kernel that's running a recent CWM build, but there's a fair chance it won't.
Edit - And be really careful with stock 4.0.4, don't do a wipe while you're running that.
Wow. I just... wow.
Ok, so I did the stupid thing and just tried to restore my old backup without doing proper downgrading first and it ended up soft bricking my machine, couldn't get recovery mode up, but I got into download mode. So I downloaded my country's stock gingerbread rom from samsung's site and flashed it with odin just to see what happens, and somehow my old rom was working again, and I have all my contacts and data. saved everything up to google, upgraded to ICS, import.
Everything went better than expected.
Thanks for the help
Told you Important thing is you managed to fix it yourself without asking silly questions in Q&A. Not many people seem to be able to do that these days.
Well done. I'm glad you got it sorted
Edit -You're welcome
Hello everyone,
I have SGS II (I9100) for about 2 years now. Im still on GB 2.3.4 KI4 (yeah dont ask why thats not my main issue here), rooted while ago with ZergRush exploit, and running HellCat's kernel. About two months ago, I fire up my phone and saw that I have no network. Went to About phone noticed that there is no baseband set, did *#06# and saw that my IMEI is empty. Luckily I had my EFS backed up with kTool, restored and was good to go. Today it happened to me again. Again restored with kTool and still good to go. So here is some facts regarding it, and I would like to know what might have causing it since I really dont update ROM's every 24 hours.
- 2 yearish old phone
- custom kernel with CWM
- did only one update from 2.3.2 (i think, cant recall what ROM was it shipped with) to 2.3.4
- didnt do factory reset after ROM upgrade
- happened before with soon-to-be-dead battery, but also with new one I got couple of days ago
- had running Dr.Web AV pretty much last year or so (I think only resident program running in background apart from loads of bloatware from Samsung)
Any info is more than welcomed since even I do have EFS backup, somehow I dont believe this is "expected behavior"...
Shall I (finally) upgrade to JB via Odin(Mobile Odin Pro?) and do factory reset/root after?
Can it be bad external card? Can internal memory can somehow be corrupted like hard drive with bad sectors or something? Really any info is more than welcomed.
Thank in advance
Here you go http://bit.ly/1bx9zPv
If you have actually read my post, before sending me to google, you would actually realized that I have EFS backup, and that I have recovered IMEI twice with kTool... Question is not HOW, but WHY. There is difference there. But hey, thanks for most ignorant reply you can actually think of. GZ you have just won the interwebs!
Hi,
i dont think its an hardware problem. I think that problem comes with your longtime running system und maybe that you didnt do a reset. Maybe you should finally upgrade to Jelly Bean - best way with Odin and a complete full wipe (save your data befor )
But keep cool, Jelly Bean looks very different to Gingerbread

Thanks for the reply Andi. Actually I did that, and so far there is no issues with it (4.1.2). Did full wipe and so far all looking good, and I really like how it handles now. Still have EFS backup, just in case
Hi,
EFS Backup ist ever ever the first step after rooting don´t understand some guys who didnt do that or forget it.
Did you 4.1.2 root? If not, i recommed the philz kernel easy way, no triangle
have a nice day

Actually had some issues there... on 2.3.3 I had Hellcat kernel, wanted BLN, and some custom UOT Kitchen mods. Did full wipe from phone, and got it stucked in bootloop.
Let i a while, then said, **** it, and used Odin to flash 4.1.2 in from download mode. Stock ROM, so no binary counter issues. Started to boot up, showed me language selection and then crashed into bootloop... Assuming that it didnt finished wipe previously... Couldnt even got in into recovery (or was too stressed, but its 3 keys to press, dunno). Then, switched to download mode, flashed 4.0.3 that I had lying around, went to recovery, did wipe, and it booted up. Played with it, and in one point I said, "meh, Ill leave it on ICS"... Then something else said "You wuss! It took you 2 years to flash damn thing, and now you will stick to ICS?!?". Downloaded Mobile Odin Pro that I have purchased a while ago, flagged autoroot and flashed 4.1.2 from it. Again wiped it (just in case) and it booted up nicely. About 3 hours of stress, googling and browsing XDA Wife actually told my kid to stay away from me )
Then, wanted again BLN and thats the reason i skipped Philz and went for Siyah kernel instead. All nice and dandy so far *knock on the wood*
Still have EFS backup on numerous locations ofc
Cheers mate and thanks for participating
Hello, my Mother today Got an info that an update to 5.0.2 is available. I know it can be done via PC Companion, but will I lose all the data, apps etc.? Thanks for your answer.
nope you wont lose any data .but just make a backup of your files, etc .just if something went wrong during update , just in case .
In most cases you will not lose anything when updating.(actually i havent heard of anyone lose anything) But if you really wanna be sure, just make a backup. But ill bet it will be fine.
It's not for me, it's for my mum Actually I did it, and nothing was wiped . I always make a clean install via Flashtool, with wiping everything.
