Yo,
Probably a stupid question, but I'm just wondering how I go about transferring to ICS from Gingerbread?
I'm on VillainRom 2.3.5 KI3, with ninphetamine kernel. I've read a few places but just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing..so if anyone could help that would be great!
Cheers

Original firmware plug it in to Kies .
Otherwise just flash ICS as per the instructions .
jje
So do I just select my region/carrier here?
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9100
and flash with Odin? Would I need to wipe or anything since I have villain on? Sorry been a long time since I flashed or done anything like this :s
there is no official ICS for the s2. samsung's only barfed out touchwizz, and believe me you don't want that to polute your poor phone. go to the android development forums here and you'll find a handful of leaks, many of them being quite stable. i tried westcrips and was happy, now im on paradoxxx'es and not much to complain either. you dont need odin, just throw the zip on your sdcard, backup and flash away in cwm. since you're coming from another rom you'd want to wipe data, cache & dalvik but better see the descriptions inside for step by step instructions.
Um...didn't samsung roll out official ics for some regions lol?

Of course they have who know what the last poster was rambling about as per his other posts .
Directing you to leaked buggy beta test firmware based roms .
I would wipe in answer to you question for any major firmware upgrade ..

Yeah, I might just wait till it gets released in Australia and flash it then

samsung released this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqqD8g6z_RM&feature=related
you call that ice cream sandwich? well, it's not.
and read what users on sammobile or around here write about it, it is buggy as hell. samsung even stopped the rollout for their note because, quote sammobile, "Samsung isn’t happy with the bugs on ICS for Galaxy S II." so of course i directed him to a port, what's wrong with it, he asked for ICS and the ports are closer to that than any of that touchwiz stuff. and its probably more stable, too.
Just follow the instructions in the op

the region is not important when the base code is released you van find the proper modem for your region .

i haven't noticed too much difference from the kj roms or kk roms. is it worth the update to KL3?

I think you needn't update to KL3
Not too many different places between kj and kk roms
Why not? Usually when Samsung updates their firmware, they usually fix something or add new things into it.
It's not like you have to wipe anything to update an official Samsung ROM.

Down to you buddy if you want to update or not. I would honestly would update through KIES as that is the official way for me to get the latest stock roms for my region...Regarding flashing stock roms through Intratechs thread that is another option if you know what you are doing though....Best option read what other people have to say about the specific rom you want to flash and if you feel you are getting good feedback then flash away
I got my SII a few month back, and ever since I've tried quite a few custom ROMs. Due to some issues etc I'd like to do a complete wipe and restore the latest Samsung ROM (while maintaining my root access) - any idea how I do this?
Can I do it via CWM (preferred), Odin or must I use Kies?
Many thanks!
Follow this guide
It also has all the download links in the thread.
....................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Still problems use usb jig to set rom counter to zero .
Return to service centre .
Much appreciated. Any idea how I can pick the correct firmware though? I guess it's not just a matter of picking the latest one?

Great, thanks. Worked like a charm. Replaced the kernel with CFs modded KK5 version and am enjoying a force-close-free experience. Now if I could just have a vanilla ICS version, I would be very happy. Say what you will about Apple, but their iOS upgrades rock.

ICS is coming, we have roms, but they are not stable or recomended. If you want vanilla ICS you will want to follow the development of CM9, as samsungs ICS roms will have touchwizz allover them.
Apples updates are nice, thats what happens when you do the hardware and the software, just like the Nexus series

True, but tbh I just went back to stock from the final CM7 version as I found it too buggy (force close issues etc). Perhaps CM9 will be better and I look forward to its release. With the official Samsung ICS release, can't you actually disable TouchWizz? I assumed it's just a launcher on top of vanilla ICS and that you can disable / remove it.

What samsung have done to make and run touchwizz on the top pure android it's more complicated and deeper which you could simply disable it. now i'm using stock firmware with siyah kernel but after watching some videos on youtube and comparing leaked realeses of touchwizz and cm9 I have no doubt to imigrate to cm9
if u wanna get back to stock, odin is ur choice!

There are no stable ICS releases for SGS2. You can find two ICS roms, one leaked from Sammy and another is CM9.
Though alpha CM9 is pretty stable .. check out the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400
Learn how to restore before flashing an unfinished Beta rom on my phone would be my first step .

CM9 is good, but it sounds like it's high risk for you at the moment - it's not all plain sailing if and when you get there.
Why not wait a few weeks for a more stable version.
I would say your better off waiting mate, maybe flash vertumus's ics theme until a stable version is out.

Hello,
3 weeks ago,I got a GT-19100G galaxy s2.Pretty happy with it,everything is great except for TW of course So I need advice at whether I should get the official ICS update when its released in march(also thinking about giving the LB leak a try) which will use TW as far as I know or root my phone and flash the CM9 and get andy's costum ICS.Andy's ICS looks pretty nice but I don't wanna root my phone specially that I never rooted any device before(my previous device was nokia n81 8gb LOL).Or maybe I should just wait for the official release and get some sort of ICS themes or something.I'm currently running Android 2.3.6 baseband I9100GDZKK1 and Kernel 2.6.35.7.So what ya think ?
root..flash CM9..after ICS offiaclly released..flash back stock rom and get OTA..easy right??
Would be easy if I knew what the hell is OTA
Edit:Oh,I googled it.Its over the air.Well, why would I root it if I will flash back stock ROM again in 2 weeks ?
Personal view would be wait for ICS then wait for the modders to mod the official release .

I was thinking about that too...I think I'll just do that But just to be on the safe side,is it completely safe to root my phone and install CM9 ? Bcuz my phone is new and if anything happened to it,I'll kill myself.
FYI, the i9100G is not the i9100, therefore ICS leaks and CM9 will not work in your phone. If you do flash CM9 or one of the leaks your phone will be damaged. The i9100G is sort of crippled ROM developement wise from the start due to it's lack of Exynos in favour of some old TI-OMAP. Your only choice is to wait for Samsung to released ICS for your phone.

IIRC, there is only one ROM available for your phone and that is SuperROM (Android 2.0.3). All other ROMs will brick your phone.
That's right. You can only install custom roms that are specifically written for the I9100G. And there aren't many of them. Someone on here said a couple of weeks ago that there are two (don't quote me on it tho).
If you flash a rom meant for any other SGS2 variant, as Xethor said, you run the risk of bricking your phone.

Damn...I had to get it since its the only S2 version available here. Why samsung ? Why would u make different versions of galaxy s2 ??!!! :/ Well I guess I'll just have to depend on launchers.I got Go launcher EX,launcher7 and ADWLauncher. If you by any chance know a nice ICS theme, can u give me the market link ?
At first I also didn't knew the difference between I9100 and I9100G. I bricked my phone by flashing one of the I9100 ROM. Then I figured it out, unbricked it again. And now i'm running SuperROM with ICS Domination v2.0 theme.
I9100G sucks big time, both in hardware and software.
Only four ROM's are available for 'G' variant:
SuperROM
Juffo ROM
Galaxyrom rc4
Darky ROM
Can't believe it took 6 replies for someone to point out to the OP that the G version is different to the International model. Lucky he didn't brick it. So glad the T version is the same except it requires its own modem.

well, i have an GS2 rooted (android 2.3.4) and sim unlocked with Galaxy S Unlocker.
if i upgrade to ICS when its released, do i loose root?
if I loose root, SuperOneClick will still work if my GS2 is ICS or do i need to wait to an update of SUperOneClick (to supor GS2 with ICS) to root my device again?
well, those are my questions.
thanks in advance.

2) Ask whomever developed SuperOneClick if it will work with ICS.

Can I just update over KIES when ICS comes out? Will the Kernel be replaced and what Files will be erased?

If you have a rooted rom, if I remember well, Kies won't update your firmware... You have to use ODIN...
ok so just to make this 100% clear (i am a complete noob and i always make stupid questions, so flaming is accepted )
I have a Galaxy S2 with just rooted firmware (XWKJ1). I used an insecure version of this firmware to root the phone following the Odin/CF Root guide. Also I am not using any custom made rom like CM for example... If I upgrade my phone through Kies when the ICS update rolls out will I be able to complete the process succesfully?
Also from what I understand if the update procedure is completed succesfully I will lose root and will have to do the whole process all over again... Is there an insecure firmware matching the ICS firmware that will replace my old one?
Thanks in advance for your help...

It was never guaranteed to be released worldwide on a single day anyways. Can you imagine the millions of I9100 users all trying to download the official ICS update via Kies at the same time? Their servers would have an aneurysm.
It would surely have been reposted for download though. Also, it was posted in various languages including English speaking Samsung sites.
I know that it is what it is and there's little point now, but I haven't had my ***** about it yet, except to my wife who is fairly confused about why this is such a disappointment for me.
Now I've had my little ***** attack about it not happening and will maintain it to this.
I dont understand why its such a big deal to get the update. Why not just flash a custom rom?

I've been squeamish after many GB ones had serious issues, for example we'd forgotten our camera when my second kid was born by cesarian and I had a sleep of death on the phone - was doing a Nandroid restore of stock 10 minutes prior to entering the operating room. It saved the day.
That said, I flashed a custom ROM right after that last post and it's been really impressive. I haven't yet found an issue with it. Everything seems to be working really well and the battery life might even be a little better than the GB ROM I was using though it's still to early to say.
I get annoyed with all the banners and the immediate back patting when there's a new RoM that hasn't even been tested, but just to answer the question some people might be asking about which one I was impressed with, it was Resurection Remix. It also happens, thogh, to be the first one I flashed that was a Samsung based ROM opposed to AOSP.
It is still annoying though. I suspect Samsung is merely manufacturing their own hype about this, intentionally, and that is irritating.
