What should i do? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Ive had my AT&T SGS2 for a few months now (prolly since about a week after it came out) and i absolutely love the phone but tired of Samsung/ AT&T's lack of urgency to get the ICS update out and i was wondering what you guys would be a better choice for me... Root the SGS2 with ICScrewed ROM or sell it and get the GSM Galaxy Nexus? Im a pretty tech savy so i can handle rooting the phone, ive unlocked and jailbroken plenty of iphones so this should be just as easy.... i love having the latest and greatest software, so the nexus in the point is great for me but i do love my SGS2... what should i do!?
Thanks,
Justin

I would keep the sgs2 as a backup and get the galaxy nexus. to be honest the nexus s is a freaking powerhouse that blew my mind. i can only imagine the galaxy nexus. BUT i would read a lot about both phones and compare them. other than updates from google what can the galaxy nexus give you that the gs2 cant? besides it wont be long before source is out and then we'll have ics running good.

tough call mate. I've been on the fence about getting the GNexus just for the native ICS..that and the phone is gorgeous. (Decided to get some ink done instead ) But.. there are plenty of ICS themed ROMs, and it really is only a matter of time before we get a real ICS update. I know not today but I imagine by the end of April we will all be wearing our ICS shoes..maybe not, but then again maybe! The only thing that turns me off about the GNexus is the 5MP camera. I'd hate to downgrade from 8 to 5.. that just kinda sucks. Anyway.. good luck with your decision

I love the native ICS on the nexus, i know even though we will get the ICS update eventually but wont look anything like what the nexus does im sure, even the ICS on the UK version doesnt look anything like Nexus ICS....Thats the same thing that turns me off from the Nexus too is the camera along with the no sd card slot as well but 16GB is plenty for me though....i do use the camera but not as much to make it a huge deal that its only 5MP....

What lack of urgency? The I9100 was the second or third non-Nexus phone on the planet to get ICS. HTC only beat Samsung on a select few devices by one week. No one else has deployed ICS to a phone yet.

I would keep the sgs2, something better will be out in later and you'll wish you waited to get that. Then again, you can't wait for ICS so why would you wait for another phone?

my suggestion:
1- keep your GS2
2- sit on your couch
3- have a beer
4- be patient.

Unless you're going to buy an unlocked international Nexus, you would be forced to go with Verizon... and I dont suggest that to anyone.

Ok well maybe i used the wrong with urgency, but maybe a better word is lack of care...its more than likely going to be months before we see ICS....

Source should drop no later than a month from this past week... my guess is that it will be posted between next week and the first of April (Im speculating here) because they have always posted up source relatively fast when it comes to their European Galaxy series. All AT&T sources took forever to drop.

so what you guys are saying just keep the SGS2 and root it? whats the most stable ICS rom out right now? or should i wait for a better one to come out?

Your problem is that you aren't satisfied with anything more than a few weeks. Once you get ICS, you'll be wondering when jellybean will come out. It's a vicious and never ending cycle. If you just have to have the latest and greatest, then you'll be spending $$ every 6months to keep up. You could just hang out and enjoy the phone for what it is, maximize it's performance with a good stable ROM and go for plenty of number 3's.

My SGS2 absolutely destroys GNex in benchmarks and performance comparisons. If it's a 'powerhouse' you're after, think twice. If it's Joneses you're after, then other points are moot.

Remember you're posting this question in the i777 forums, so naturally most will advise to keep the GS2. If you asked the same question in the GNexus forums the advise would surely go the other way.
IMHO, we're too close to source drop for our device to leave it now. What are you really gaining with the Gnexus other that pure ICS and more frequent updates from google. Thats what great about XDA, once source drops and people get to work on it, we don't have to sacrifice much, if anything.
You said you feel comfortable rooting, etc. So wait a few more weeks and get ready to flash some sweet $hit!!

Yeah, i agree with the others. Wait it out, ICS will be here in no time. Plus, other than the ICS, I think that the GNex is a worse phone. The Pentile screen messes with my eyes, and the processor is worse too.

Exynos man. Exynos... Mmmm yes exynos. Why would you want to leave a exynos chipset for a TI OMAP? Even though the sgsii is not a "google experience" phone, itself is its only little experience why do you think apple is after its ass. Lol.

[Q] Why isn't there many developers making roms for the photon?

I have my MoPho rooted but there are only 2 roms for it. If you go over and look at the Atrix developers forum they have a ton of support.
The phones are similar, why isn't there much rom development for the Photon as there is the Atrix.
Does anyone know if the Cyanogen Mod is going to be made to work for the photon?
before anyone else says it. GO LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AND MAKE YOUR OWN ROM

Well that would be useful if I had time to learn everything and create roms myself.
the sgs2 for sprint was announced. this phone was horribly placed in terms of release dates. a lot of people jumped on the evo3d bandwagon, now the sgs2 is coming out soon and not too long after is the release of the new nexus.
once the epic touch is released expect these forums to die down a lot more... unless the et4g sucks... in which we might get a few more users
I heard the et4g kills baby kittens. Does that help?

I'm out of thanks for the day, but you will get one soon enough from me I'm sure. That being said, how hard is 'porting' and what exactly does that mean? I think I get the idea but how is it done really?
I would love to learn how to do this. I am slowly getting into theming a little, but am no where close to releasing anything yet, first off I am a perfectionist and second I am just learning the basics now.
Would love to start reading up on the whole porting aspect of stuff.

Porting is basically making the proper changes for the rom/kernel/theme to be compatible with another device. Just do a Google search and you can find other threads talking about it.
If you don't have any code experience it will be tough going to learn. If you are already trying to learn how to theme than this is good place to start because knowing the directory structure and where things are located will help.

no the tech sites need to read between the lines. was there a nexus being shown off around big v's hq? yea.. wanna guess why? because out of the top four carriers in teh us they are the only ones without a nexus device..
there are rumors of verizon getting a droid prime which if thats the case yet again they will be without a nexus device (cant call it something else) my guess is because they want the hardware but their carrier bloat crap on it
The photon is an awsome phone and with tegra 2 thd games it beats my gfs evo shift hands down. I tried the evo3d and wasnt impressed. Its really buggy and likes to get stuck in 3d mode. The sales rep even told me to go with the photon which was cheaper meaning less commissions. She had came from doing repairs to sales and she said the evo3d was a waste of money and told me all the horror stories they were having at the repair center with them.
I know sprint has some phones comimg out soon that are going to be better but work with what we have first.
I found my old htc tilt and it still has more dev than the photon.
Im someone who isnt all about games. I like preformance, battery life and apps to make my day more productive.

I think a lot of Sprint customers were like me... the MoPho came out, we yawned, and had zero interest in it regardless of specs because it was Motorola... and we all knew Motorola was the essence of pure toxic TiVO-ized evil in AT&T/Verizon-land. They encrypted their bootloaders in ways that couldn't be trivially cracked, and bent over backwards to lock down everything they could.
Then Google bought Motorola, the sun came out, the birds started singing, the sourcecode got released, and suddenly the MoPho became interesting.

Might Jump the Gun

My upgrade is due next week, and I've been researching this phone like crazy in the past 2 months, constantly checking back here and reading posts. i know all the issues, screen bleeding, camera flash issue, multitouch points etc, and they do not really bother me. i was playing with the galaxy nexus and ICS runs INSANELY smooth and snappy, i was wondering when CM9 is available, will it be that responsive and smooth? Im on Tmobile USA right now and i could get the amaze for 230.00 with a contract, or i can fork out 600.00 for a galaxy nexus. i Do beleive the amaze is an all around better phone, camera, build quality, and so on. But im worried how well ICS run on it. i like options, for example, galaxy nexus will have ICS, thats it, the amaze i could flash between sense roms and ICS (when its available)
BTW, im coming from a tmobile G2. Im a huge fan of xboarder's work, Super excited to see him on the amaze forums.
any suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated, i need your thoughts and opinions, i apologize for the long rant also.

If you think like this, you will never upgrade. At the rate that technology advances, a technically superior device is always going to be "just around the corner." Just continue to do your research, make a choice, and enjoy it.
im not worried about it getting outdated, I'm worried it'll get outdated too quickly. 2-3 months is quick for me but anything frm 4-6 months is reasonable. And thanks to u guys I will be gettingthe amaze next week. Im putting my money on the devs on this one, I know you guys won't disappoint
And the "lack of" development doesn't bother me either. Quality over quantity, rather have 6 superior roms over 20 mediocre ones

Whats wrong with samsung ??

Before buying a SGS2 I was using HTC Sensation, was infact very happy with sensation but suddenly decided to switch to SGS2 since everyone boasting about it.
as of now i am still very happy with the phone, especially the Screen and how fast the phone is... but there are some issue which i have found only on Samsung firmwares..
1). The lag in opening the contacts and dialer app (it feels like a 800 mhz phone, takes min 3-4 secs)
2). I also find lag in gallery app..
i have never found these lags on HTC phones, even on nexus one..
I have tried many roms on my SGS2 but no sucess
Only CM7 & CM9 roms have zero lag
above all these i am very disappointed with Samsung for still not releasing ICS, dont understand why there is so much delay..
they have made such a great piece of hardware but such pathetic software support.. we shell so much amount for these devices but look how Samsung treats its customers.. same happened with SGS1 also i believe
I have decided not to buy Samsung phones from now on.. it is better to go back to HTC
thumbs down to guys at Samsung !!

Cool story bro.
You may complain about the latency issues, but for the software update you can't say much since no other company has released ics updates except for tablets.
Still not releasing ICS? Please do tell me which phone other than Galaxy Nexus actually has the official ICS? Considering Galaxy nexus is a samsung phone, in a way, they did release a phone with ICS.
Edit: Also hilarious that you are whining on XDA considering there are tons of ICS roms already.
ywah true in a way, but when they have such a good hardware why cant they be quick, they took their own sweet time for GB on SGS1, we also know what happened to Samsung Wave.. even for 2.3.6 update for SGS2 Indian users was release just few weeks back
they have always delayed proper support for their phones
And you honestly think we give a flying **** what you think about Samsung phones & that you're never going to by one again, eh ?
Guess what ?
If you're that unhappy I'll give you €100 for your SGS2. As the eminently wise B3311 said, cool story bro.

I don't think anything is wrong with Samsung. I recently got my Epic 4g Touch from sprint and I've had two updates. My last phone on the other hand received 1 software update to 2.2.1 and all development was abandoned by the manufacturer and developers here on XDA had to pretty much beg for the source code.
In my opinion Samsung has created an amazing series of phones that will have a long life with development from Samsung and the developers here on XDA.

It's a problem on your side, not a general SGS2 problem. Just try a custom ROM like CheckROM, and disable all animations with Spare Parts. Your eyes will not be able to see how fast apps open.
SGS2 is the fastest piece of mobile hardware I've ever used, no doubt about it. It's much faster than my friends' HTCs.
About ICS, Samsung's competitors haven't released an ICS ROM either. This ICS thing is way overhyped anyway. It's not much more than a pretty skin over Gingerbread with a cool new launcher. Everytime I try out an ICS ROM, I come back to Gingerbread wondering what the fuss is all about.
Try this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312240
It will make all your complaints go away.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the OP, or my post.
Nonetheless, this thread's pointless. He should've done some more research before throwing his money away.
The "problem" with Samsung is that they want to do it right, not quick.
The most recent ICS leak (which, in case you didn't catch it, is the current version/build of ICS Sammy is working on ATM) still has a few bugs and issues and they want to fix those first and make the ROM stable and bugfree before releasing it as an official update.
As already said, show us ONE other phone (esp. HTC, which are always way behind updates) that has an official, final ICS update already.
So, on the other hand: what is the problem with YOU?

yea im going to do the same thing once my phone comes in. i just signed up for sprint today and my phone should arrive by saturday. last motorola android i owned was the cliq and it took them well over a year with the same promise to bring 2.0 or 2.1 to that phone from 1.5 after several delays. cyanogenmod had a stable release for that phone several months before the official update came out. by then i didnt even have the phone anymore lol switched to the mytouch3g slide.
By the time ICS is released in Q3......Jelly Bean should be out in the alpha stage
...just saying...
Maybe it will get here a bit sooner. At least this newer info will get rid of all the many posts about "Will Photon get ICS?". Very annoying. I never doubted for a second the Photon wouldn't get ICS. Google wants this on all devices capable of running it and have said so from the beginning. ICS is just slow rolling out it seems.
Anyways, for those of us that need full functionality CM9 isn't an option yet. One of the great things about the Photon is HDMI out and Webtop feature. I am not willing to lose those and as I understand there is no way to activate Webtop on CM9 yet. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. However, 4g I can live without (not in my area) and having the camera working now is a great step to final.
Al Sharpton will be President before Photon sees ICS! Im getting SGS11 Note with it! Why the he'll AT&T is selling with GB i'm clueless! Oh, get out and vote for Rev Al!

Ok....I just have to ask. What does this thread & ICS have to do with Al Sharpton?
Also, if the Note only has GB and you want it cause you say the Photon won't get ICS in forever than why do you want a Note?? Sorry but your post seems like just jibbity jabber. How much coffee do you drink in the morning??

Ok, let me clarify. We all know Al will never be president, therefore, I believe although announced, Moto will pull the plug at some point before Q3.
Next, the AT&T note has GB, the Sprint Note, expected this summer, is expected (again expected!) to have ICS more over to top AT&T!

Ah...thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. However, the Photon will get official ICS.

Sure, just like I got WiMAX 4G! Lets be honest, who here keeps a phone more than a year? If they pushed this to Q2 maybe, but for us to wait with all the new hardware coming out WITH ICS, I'm surprised Moto made the announcment, they could have saved the development work, but we will see I'm sure. And even with me getting the Note, I'm not getting rid of the Photon anytime soon. like 2013 Q2 if my income tax is late, haha!
As bad as the SGS2 is on Sprint, you better take a long look at the Note before you jump on it. Ill never own another Samsung device. They have officially lost me at this point. Im waiting for HTCs next big thing. They seem to be the best of the bunch from what we have to chose from.

I do.
It is a business phone so it is up to Sprint on when they will allow us an upgrade. If they are now on a 2-year upgrade plan for even businesses than I will for sure have the Photon for over a year. We can't afford to keep upgrading otherwise.
Also, wasn't it you who was just complaining in another thread about not having WiMax and "what if I want to keep my Photon for 10 years?" point? If you don't keep a phone for more than a year why was that even a valid point on your end?
Not trying to be harsh with these questions, just observations and curiousity mainly.

You know how many people gave me negative reviews on my last 3 or 4 devices and I was cool with all of them! Besides, I will play hard for 29 days and if I don't like, get my money minus $25.00 restocking fee!

Google Translator says Swedish but since I lived there and speak a little, Swedish is not it. I know German when I see it. I know French when I see it. SO, I'm going with Finnish (don't look Russian either!)

You mean the SGS2 where they are testing official ICS leaks right now as we speak?
I've not had a single issue with mine (nor with my wife's Photon beyond a few kinks which were worked out fairly quickly).
HTC? Really? After the 3D and assorted crap (Design anyone?) I'm beginning to think the og Evo was a fluke. Thanks, but no thanks.

Just ordered a Rezound did I make a good choice?

So I found what I think to be an amazing deal on a used mint condition Rezound on ebay. I've been waiting endlessly for the Incredible 4G but 2 things happened recently that has thrown a wrench in my plans, Verizon trying to do away with the grandfathered unlimited data users like me and my Incredible 2 has decided to take a huge crap. My contract is up but I'm afraid to renew it till they give us more information on the whole deal, that and I don't wanna waste my upgrade till a really awesome phone comes out. I do hope the Rezound is as good as all the reviews I've seen about it. I have been drooling over it ever since it came out back in Nov but it's over 6 months old now. What do you guys think? Also I don't know if I will root it or not. Thanks
probably too late to worry about it now...
Nope! We all hate our phones. Very bad choice.
True! Just seeing what people who already have it think about the phone since I've never got to mess with one. Although I can get a refund if I decide I don't want it.
It's an awesome phone. I think it will be the best you can get on Verizon for a while longer still. Why wouldn't you root it? If you bought it off Ebay, you shouldn't have any warranty issue to worry about. You might want to wait till after the official ota to ics though...
I do like rooting, it's fun just to do it but I probably try 50 different roms till I find one I like that's stable
Isn't flashing 50 roms half the fun of getting a new phone?

Not entirely, I just flash what I feel is stable, yet featured packed.
Part of the reason I'm waiting patiently for CM9.
Yes its a great choice

Lol cm9. Like the second apocalyptic coming ; Your supposed to believe it , never ask for ETA, and be on your best behavior at all times .
Lesson learned... Don't buy a phone for possibility of development .
If it sucks with stock , then your sol if your developers up and leave.
Ask not what your developer can do for you, ask what you can do for your developer.
I've always told people that a phone is only as good as it is stock, I forgot my own words because I needed a new phone and Rezound was best choice and I banked on development being like previous HTC phones, I'm not asking for ETAs, etc. I've been here long enough to know this. I took a chance and so far so good.

You made a really good choice sir. HTC Rezound is one of the best VZW phones. I love the true HD LCD, once you take a look at this screen you won't want to go back to anything alse. Very speedy with the 1.5 dual core processor you can fly through your apps.

It is a great phone stock and is even better with some ROMs and work
Fantastic choice. For all intensive purposes, this should have been called the Droid Incredible 3. I just upgraded 2 weeks ago ish.
I would go for root. It's an easy one to do, but if your used to clockwork, go Amon Ra on this one. Haven't tried clockwork, but i heard it has many problems. MIght I also suggest clean rom 1.7 if your going gingerbread? and SirGatez's tethering fix of course!
I just got one today, and Im wondering the same thing!
Definately can't go wrong with the Rezound. Especially if you got a good deal on it. Also rooting & S-off have made this phone very enjoyable. Plus this is one of the better communities that I've ever been a part of. I hope you enjoy your Rezound as much as I enjoy mine.
Have had this phone for one month, usually root and flash custom rom right away. This phone works so good right out of the box, very fast, best screen, everything just works. This phone has the strongest signal and best radios of all Verizon phones IMO. Great Phone.
