[Q]Ressurection Remix Rom install questions from a noob - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I've been using normal andriod with touchwiz for about a year now and Im really in the mood for something new. I've been reading up on ics but was dissapointed to hear that the ui hardly changes due to touchwiz.
So I've been reading up on ROMS and the whole development thing and i'm now contemplating trying to install one. From a lot of reactions it sounds really exciting though I also read that a lot can go wrong.
So I've been thinking about ressurection remix and have been watching those movies at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
I have a few questions about it, perhaps someone who installed it can explain.
First question, there is a guide to install a rom and a guide to install a kernel, but in the movie the guy says that the rom comes with the kernel preinstalled. So why is there a guide for the kernel then? Do i need to install a seperate kernel at the end for the ultimate experience or can i just ignore that part?
I can save my apps with titanium backup right? Does it save all the settings in apps too or only the apps themselves?
Any other tips/advice for a beginner or should i just try the guide on that site and see if me and my phone survives?
Thanks in advance.

If the kernel come preinstalled you needn't worry about flashing another kernel, but I'd recommend checking out a few different kernels to see which one suites your needs.
Titanium backup backs up the app and the apps data.
Extra advice: make a full backup with CWM!
If you're not happy with that ROM, check out MIUI, it has plenty of themes, including ICS.

Ok guys I want very solid but the problem I have is that the explenation im trying to carefully follow on here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
.. is for 9.7. Now I was planning to follow that step by step and there is a 9.6 file to download but is there a explenation for that too? for example i dont see gaps for remix and gapsfixer (or i dont need that for this 9.6?) anything else thats different for this installation?
Final question this 1.0 version you speak of is it worth just waiting for that or will that take too long (or might the difference be too small?).

Hi,
I've been using V9.7 for a week and everything works for me.
If i remember : yes you need a "gapps.zip" and a "gappsfixer.zip" for V9.6.
You've to follow the same setps (as for V9.7) :
- install V9.6 Remix
- install gapps
- install gappsfixer
- dalvik cache
- and then reboot

V1.0 is gonna be based on the official ics. So its def something to get when it comes out.
He has said its gonna take 7-10 days though
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA

And i believe the gaps are the same for every rom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA

Ok so i hardly started and im already running into my first challenge. Rooting. The guide for installing the rom says i have to root the device first. I've used the other guide for that
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2/
And it installs the zerglings it seems but after reboot i do not get a superuser.

The post you follow says : if "not" retry again step 10...so you have to do it again...

after installing the 3 files above in that order .. isnt it
- wipe cache
- enter "advanced" on menu .. then
- wipe dalvik cache
- fix permissions
I've noticed they omitted the fix permissions part on 9.7?? but I still did it
Also I agree v9.6 is more stable without the display errors of white on white and black on black text, plus you can install LPJ kernel on v9.6 (i'd try Siyah's not the one on westcrip's rom page)
I'm using Siyah without any problems.. no fc's
I think if you install Siyah's after you've freshly installed 9.6 may have something to do with it not causing fc's .. don't know why tho?..

[Q] some doubts about cm7.1 by grif_07

I wanted to install cm7.1 by grif_07 but had to clear some doubts before trying it coz my primary reason for trying a custom rom is to enable apps2sd. otherwise I am happy with the samsung stock rom.
1. is every feature in the stock rom working perfecly especially like camera and video recording?
2. is apps2sd included in this rom? (important)
3. will I loose swype keyboard? but I believe I can restore it from my titanium backup. correct me if I am wrong.
and also I wanted to know is there some easy way to enable apps2sd in stock rom? without using a pc coz I dont have my pc working now
1) If you're looking for stock abilities , stick to stock .
2) No , but can be downloaded
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App
Install manager by Alfred Neumayer from market is the perfect solution for app2sd on stock rom.
Swype needs some library files if I'm not wrong.

isnt it just like the link2sd app which I use now but I think that kind of apps dont move all the app data to sd something remains in the phone memory.

You can try that. But if it doesn't work, download the beta. There was a huge update and I don't think you'll like to stick to the old stock version.
For a2sd functions for cm7 try s2e
Just register in the beta.swype.com site and the swype installer will be sent to your email account so you can download it with your phone, just install it and swype will be downloaded.
today I found this thread about cf-root kernel

I didnt quite understood the instructions there. what I wanted to know is can I enable dtapps2sd just by flashing the "CF-Root-S5830_ dtapps2sd- v1.2.zip" file there or should I flash the "CF-Root-
S5830-v3.7 -b82.zip" kernel first and then flash the other one?

is a modified kernel (not a rom).. it should be stated on the first line of the CF-Root thread.
i recommend you to use the app like scoffyburito said
swype beta is working fine in cm7 grif (dont forget it's still beta and RC )
at last I figured out how to correctly use link2sd huh...
dont think I need a custom rom now. next step would be some kind of ram optimization script then it will b a perfect droid...
What i have currently:
1.) Stock ROM
2.) CF Root
3.) CF Root dtapp2sd.zip
4.) V6 Supercharger (Memory optimiser)
Everything working beautifully.
Anywhere to get RAM cleaner ?
Hi, umm,
I flashed my ace to cm 7.1 this morning. It runs quite smooth. Although there's 1 thing from the stock ROM i seriously miss - RAM cleaner. I just can't live without it and no application can replace it. I managed to overclock it successfully to 902 MHz (stable) . I'd say CM 7 is awesome, it just needs the Clean RAM option. And if it is somewhere out there, can please some1 tell me where can I find it.
EDIT: 902 MHz isnt stable, just rebooted

Currently on SuperClean v2.. Good Fascinate ROM??

I'm on the Super Clean Milestone 2 ROM that i like.. but it hasnt been updated in months. I'm looking for a similar ROM but less buggy. Any suggestions? Not looking for all those dark-themed ROMS i saw on development..
Thanks!

If you want a stock like experience then GeeWiz is probably what you want. If you want cutting edge then AOKP is probably the best non-Touchwiz Rom.

Hmmm, sound like somebody didn't follow instructions and flash Gapps
Make sure you're on CWM fixed for CM7
MAKE A NANDROID
wipe data/factory reset in recovery
flash ROM if you're on ICS, if not flash this THS build 2 first
flash Gapps
reboot

Last time I checked, Droidstyle's Guide had all the files you'd need, including Gapps. Perhaps give it another read.

You should try THS's ICS rom, it's very close to being brought on with full cm9 support and they are constantly updating it.

Good luck.

Look man, I understand this is your first ROM. Now, as you already know, we have CM9, the only changes you made are de-bloating the rom. But, we can all already do that using Titanium Backup, I'd say you gotta add something to this ROM to attract users. Don't get me wrong, you've done a great job. I mean, I can't even do what you did. But all the same, these people won't try out the ROM unless they find something new or better in it.
Looking forward to something better from you. I know you got the potential.
If it was a suggestion you wanted, if you make a CM10 ROM, I'll definitely try it!
Cheers.

android 4.2 rom problems

whenever i install a 4.2 rom the same problems occur, camera says no external storage available and so does gallery and playstore just force closes
I had this problem n solved it.
This is strange but trust me!
I guess your using a blade42 kernel for aokp etc?! Flash a cm10 kernel, wipe cache and dalvik. Wait for optimizing apps to finish n it will get stuck on starting android or something like that. After a min or two reboot into bootloader n flash the latest blade42, wipe cache and dalvik then reboot.
Done
I had this n no matter how many different blade42 kernels I tried they were all the same. I had a feeling there was a problem changing kernels, just a hunch, I assumed that forcing the phone to change wrongly to a cm10 kernel made the phone make a better job of changing back to the correct kernel.
If you get what I mean!
Anyway try the cm10 idea

I already had the 0 folder. I had been successfully using 4.2 ROMs for a little while. It wasn't until I updated my kernel that the problem started. Then eventually even the origional kernel (that worked) started to say no storage. The only way it got solved was the way I mentioned.

Advice needed to upgrade from GB 2.3.6 to a newer version

I have been happily plodding along on CheckROM RevoHD v6.0 (GB 2.3.6) ('member CheckROM? I 'member) with Dark Knight kernel v2.5.2 since around 2012 but several apps I use need updating and the newer versions won't work below v4. I've held out as long as possible. So, it's time to bite the bullet and get back into flashing.
I've had a bit of a browse here and I'm a bit confused. It looks like the version of CWM I have (not sure of exact version, whichever one was current in early 2012, I haven't booted into it for over 4 years) will not allow me to install a newer ROM from the last couple of Android releases. Is TWRP the newer recovery I need? I also see a lot of talk about flashing a PIT file to repartition the internal SD for a larger system partition. That seems like a grand idea. Tired of moving stuff around to get a new app installed!
In summary, I just need a few pointers and tips on what to do next to move my S2 from CheckROM RevoHD 6 to a newer ROM. I know you can't really ask "what's the best ROM?" here but what's the best ROM? Just kidding...but I would like something stable (no constant FCs/random reboots), easy-ish on the battery, no bloatware etc. If it looks purdy that's nice too. Drop a few names to check out.
I don't need to be hand-held step by step, maybe just link me threads to follow in the right order and I'll be off.
Thanks all.

Thanks all.

Hi
What i would do:
- make a backup
- update cwm to cwm 6.0.4.7
- clean flash of cm11 20161119 i9100.zip by @zjq985062714 + pico open gapps together with isorec recovery 3.0.2-1.zip by @the.gangster.
So you will have a good working rom and the latest isorec twrp recovery.
Then you can increase system and data Partitions by using lanchon repit tool.
This is a zip-file in which you can fill in your desired size. Choose 1.0GB for system and 4.0GB For data.
Flash then this zip-file in twrp recovery.
Now you are able to flash any cm12/cm13 and even cm14 (or stay on cm11 for a try)‘
I just want to mention that i always started from JB and not from GB but you have a custom recovery.
2 excellent noob friendly guides by @Saber:
- how to incease system partition .....
- want to update to cm13 ....

Thanks for your thorough and informative reply TriboDoP, I appreciate it.
I will source out the rest of the files later but for now I tracked down CWM 6.0.4.7 for the I9100 here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...wm-clockworkmod-recovery-kit-kat-4-4-t2628412 The OP links are dead but a later post had a mirror. Is that the right file?

I understand, and thanks for the caution. Of course, nandroid backup will always be #1 on the to do list.
I do think i will need to do some more reading here to make sure I can achieve what I want the way I want.
If anybody reading has been through this (GB -->JB, KK or higher...I will not be bothered with ICS) please feel free to chime in with your experience.
