Been playing around with Kernel development and created an overclocked kernel for the 4.0.2.A.0 stock Rom.
There's nothing too speciall in it at the moment, but lets you overclock the Ray to 1.9Ghz using the source released by SE and the modified CPU steps that IF2 posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165355
There's no custom bootloader/Clockwork mod and no additional governers (at the moment) although I may add these in future as I learn more.
It seems to work well enough, and everything seems to be working as standard. I experience random lock-ups at 1.9 and occasionally 1.8Ghz, especially when it goes into/out of sleep when the screen turns off. Lower frequencies seem stable though.
This is released as-is, I'm using it myself but I can't be held responsible for any instabilities or failures you might experience. Just thought it might be of use to some people.
The new .img file can be downloaded from here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17615284/4.0.2.A.0-Overclock.img
To install just use fastboot in the usual way. To return to stock, extract kernel.sin from the official update image using WinZip/WinRar etc and flash using fastboot again.
Thanks a lot hartej !
Just flashed it, seems to work as described. I OC to 1.4 Ghz
Will report back if there is any issue.
Looking forward for additional CPU governors, insecure kernel, autoroot and clockwork recovery
Thanks again for your hard work

That's the plan eventually, but still just learing the ropes so don't expect all that by tomorrow Glad I could help.
Thanks for the efforts. I set up to 1.3 Ghz and so far so good.

Finally? Cheeky buggar!
Not really had any time unfortunately due to work, but if you've updated the defconfig for the Ray I might have a bash at your sources in the morning (still don't understand them!)
Thanks again though - if it wasn't for your help and the fact you stopped developing for the Ray I'd never had started playing about with kernels myself!

It could be a good idea to move this thread in the newly created subforum dedicated to the Ray: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1351
Can you also make a kernel for cm7 with some other governors like Doomkernel's one but for fxp043. Thanks in advance
I've created a new thread in the Ray forum as I don't think I can move this one without being a mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18829345

This is all pretty new to me, so don't expect too much too fast!
In future I may look at CM7 images but currently I'm on the stock firmware (at least until the flash in CM7 is fixed) and as I have to use the phone daily I'm not prepared to switch between firmwares to be developing for different sources at this time.
I've been using CM7 on my other devices (HTC Desire and ZTE Blade) so will most likely switch to it when some of the bugs have been worked out. When this happens I'll look at the CM7 Kernel.

To flash, use the following command:
Code:
fastboot flash boot play.img
^^ replace play.img with play-cdma.img if you are flashing CDMA kernel.
WiFi modules do not need to be flashed as I kept the kernel string the same as the stock kernel, meaning stock WiFi modules can be used
If you are coming from DooMKernel, you will need to flash STOCK WiFI Modules, DooM has provided them on his topic

Cool, but please sort out the front page articles, grammar is quite bad
E.g on the article HTC: ICS Update Announced
Every Android user bothered about his version of android should know what ICS is, if not, it is Google’s newest version of the Android OS (4.0) and has many improvements over Gingerbread, not mentioning a total UI redesign!
That should be "Not to mention"

just flashed it now keiran. flashed the darkforest rom last night and if the kernel's half as good as the rom i think you're onto a winner. very happy with the rom so far and i'll let you know how the kernel goes

Hi keiran,
Great work m8. Is there any chance we could have a 1.6ghz version its just that my Xperia Play wont boot with the 2ghz its the same with doom lords kernal aswell it just stays on the boot screen.
Thanks

It should still boot (I have the default CPU speed set at 1024MHz (1GHz) on the kernel) just don't overclock further than 1.6GHz.
I don't know how DooMLord made his 1.6GHz one because he has no source code for it.

I'm not sure either but i cant even get in to the rom unless i boot the 1.6ghz version on DoomLords kernal. It just stays on the Sony Ericsson screen. I'll send a pm to doomlord see if he replys .
Thanks

Still, try it just to see if it boots
Hi Keiran,
I did some searching on the forum and i think its because my Play cant handle 2ghz so it just hangs on boot screen. I tried your kernel and it did the same as the other 2ghz kernels. It must do some checks on the boot to see if the device can support it the different clocks.
Any chance you could make a kernel which can only clock up to 1.6ghz please.
Thanks
Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I was on DoomKernel. I flashed your Dark Forest Kernel to give it a whirl and everything works fine however now m Wifi does not work. It just says "error" next to it under settings. I flashed the stock kernel, then rebooted, then went back and reflashed the DarkForest Kernel and same thing. I do have a flashable zip for wifi modules I tried that and still the same, no wifi. Any ideas?

Can someone tell me how to overclock Samsung S advance?
SetCPU couldn't do it, neither android overclock...
Thanks!!!
For now, you cannot overclock SGSAdvance - O/C requires custom kernel, which hasn't been compiled yet. You can change your CPU's speed, but it won't let you set higher parameters than stock. So, wait for devs to compile an O/C kernel

The 1.3GHz always ate my battery way faster than the 1.0GHz one, so keep that in mind.
Cm7 kernel stock kernel is best for stability and battery life if your staying at 1ghz hands down.

MMontuori kernel was based on faux's one. I think MMontuori's provide better battery life with no laggy or bugs. Stay with Mmontuori after tried the both: faux and mm
Hello! This is my first thread, ever, on any forum so please don't bash me if I forget something .
I've decide to make a kernel for the SGP 5.0 for Gingerbread because I loved Entropy512's, but I was slightly jelous of the INTL users and all their new givernors and I/O schedulers. Soooo i used Entropy512's sources and borrowed rumirand's schedulers and governors and tossed in a 1.4 GHz OC and a few cherry picks from KOala888 and voila!
Current features:
O3 optimization
battery pooling - 60sec (KOala888)
touchscreen responsivness tweaked (KOala888)
Screen UV (KOala888)
2.6.35.7 source for GingerBread.
Unsecure mode.
Swap support.
Overclock to 1.4Ghz and undervolt capabilities (use SetCPU or another software for UV).
Added lazy (default), interactive, interactiveX, smartassv2, ondemandX governors.
Added BFQ, V(R) and SIO (default) schedulers.
Init.d support.
Added statically linked busybox 1.19.3 (/sbin)*.
Modified adbd (pointing shell to /sbin/sh), so you can use adbd even if you don't have any partition working.
ext4 support (ghetto lagfix).
ClockWorkMod. Nandroid backup - restore works, mount/umount, format (formats to ext4).
CIFS support.
jhash3.
SoD patch from netarchy/coolbho3k.
TinyRCU.
netarchy's conservative tuning patch.
Custom bootanimation support (/system/media/bootanimation.zip) from Entropy512's kernel.
Per-File fsync() disable
Charginghacks from Entropy512.
I may release a 1.2 GHz version if the community finds 1.4 too unstable.
If there is anything i forgot please tell me!

I've got Entropy's kernel on my player, and I keep having random freezes. For instance, I'll be typing or scrolling and thing go completely unresponsive for a second or two. I'm not sure if it's a governor thing or what (I've turned off overclocking to see if that helped, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference).
Do I just have a bad install of Entropy's, or is this something everyone has? Would flashing this kernel likely to fix those issues? Can I flash without re-installing my ROM (Gingerbread Based)? Are there any issues I should know about before applying this kernel?

I had the same problem, i could never diagnose the source, but so far i havent had it once with the 1.4GHz OC. if you do get that problem tell me and ill look into it further .
EDIT: Problem still exists, if anyone has an idea what it is please tell me. I believe Mevordel had a theory a while back it was due to facebook being a rogue app and causing it. Feedback on this theory will be greatly appreciated!
EDIT2: Facebook does not appear to be the culprit.

Well, I've flashed it now. Here's to hoping it's smooth sailing from here on out
I ran this kernel almost all day yesterday. Visually, things in the UI don't look much faster (probably because of the lack of GB hardware acceleration, and Project Butter), but a few 3D games run noticeably better. Those random pauses that occur, especially when typing on a keyboard, have seemed to also disappear. Thanks for making Gingerbread a bit better to use for those of us that can't let it go completely just yet!
I likewise ran all day, and didn't see any issues. I'm optimistic they're gone now. I never install Facebook, to further disprove that theory.

Of course But you may get compile errors when building with Linaro, in which case you will need to solve them. There are also a few other things to worry about with Linaro, else you may solve the errors and get the kernel to compile and it won't boot.
Thank you! I am a going to load this right now. Thanks for including smartassV2 in governors. The main reason I used INTL r14 over Entropy.
Edit: 8:50 pm.
Cannot load over clock module from Tegrak. When I try to load the module and change the OC to 1.152 (which I find most stable on my player) the player will reboot. 1.2 and 1.4 seem to be the only option for OC. Been running at 1.2 for now with no issues. 1.4 seemed to run too hot.

Same problem here with Tegrak, I'll try to get it sorted out in the next release.
EDIT: I got the module to load i think, but the device reboots directly after. It reboots after the Load Module button greys though so I'm fairly sure its loading
EDIT2: It loads if i set the max frequency to 1.2GHz from No Frills, but if i change it back to 1.4 after its loaded it reboots. Getting there .

The tegrak module and the kernel have version names in them and the module will only load when the version inside said module matches the version of the kernel. Basically, they need to have the same name. There's some nice info on this here: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/lkmpg/2.6/html/x380.html

It's not the version of the version but the localversion (normally it is 2.6.35.7-XXXXX) The X represents the local version. You can modify the module to actually make it work with the kernel or in your case modify the localversion specified in the defconfig.
Thank you so much for this Kernel!!!! I am loving the 1.4 Ghz. Smooth sailing so far. Once again thanks!
