[Q] Really weird kernel compile issue. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i couldn't think of any other place to ask this question but ive been at trying to solve this issue for 2 days now and its driving me crazy, im going to try my best to explain it.
so i compiled kernel #1 and it worked ish. had some expected issues.
compiled kernel #2, donest work, mess with it for a few days. no luck. go back to kernel #1
compile kernel #1. the file size is different then the original #1 compile, and when i install it it has graphics issues as in nothing is displayed correctly... its all kinds of messed up.
the issue here is i cannot replicate my original compile of kernel #1.
-what i have tried-
it is not the rom. proven.
nuked kernel dir
tried a different folder with a clean download
restarted the computer
tried different toolchains versions
tried a fresh .config
is there any other cache or something i can clear that will maybe fix this?

well i haven't had any issues at all until now :/ do you really think thats the only solution? i only ask because ubuntu is my primary os on my laptop and it would be a real pain to downgrade...

no luck.
tried on an ubuntu 10.04 box. didnt work, same results.
every time i compile each zimage is a few bytes different form the last.
the issues im seeing is horrible graphics artifacting all over the place... and im not sure why.

Ubuntu on A101

Ive managed to run Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the A101 in SDE.
By run i mean i see GDM, because the driver for the touchscreen seems not to be working.
What ive did was, i took an image from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/ports/releases/10.10/release/ and copied everything from the data partition to a new .img file. Also ive copied the modules from the angstrom rootfs.img.
Then just copied over my rootfs.img over the angstrom one and booted.
There seems to be lots of issues, mainly, i guess, because the init script in the initrd should do something, the one from angstrom doesnt.
Also the kernel-log says it cant read the /proc/ filesystem.
I uploaded my rootfs img to rapidshare for you to try for yourselfes, maybe someone can pick up from here and build a really working kernel+initramfs.

Yes, but as i could not login,i havent seen if the windowmanager works correctly.

Kudos! - You could just try to plug in a usb mouse/keyboard into the usb port - it's usb host (mouse and keyboard work in android)
I'd love to see some more action with this. A mouse+keyboard should at elast get you access to the desktop and thus, terminal. From there, enabling the touch screen should be within arms reach.
To experiment for myself, could you write together a fool proof (noob proof) guide to get to where you're at?

i tried that, but it did not work. But that might be because the only Device i have here to test is some wireless usb mouse, which might need some other drivers.
Im currently working on an image with the xserver-xorg-input-evtouch driver built-in. I hope that gets the touchscreen working in X11.
To get started:
Get some Ubuntu.
Install rootstock using: sudo apt-get install rootstock.
Run rootstock:
sudo rootstock --fqdn archos-ubuntu --login ubuntu --password ubuntu --keepimage --imagesize 2G --seed ubuntu-netbook
That one generates an .img file you can copy over your existing rootfs.img.

i had to ctrl+c, because i tas going no where for about an hour.

I had that problem too once.. Just trying again might work rootstock seems to be a bit buggy.
A little update: usb-mice work, when the modules are copied in /lib/modules in the image, but only when no computer is connected on the mini-usb port, that was the problem in the first place.
Wlan driver extracted from stock archos android can be loaded too, but i didnt manage to get the firmware to load yet.

Good God, how awesome it'd be to have a USEABLE distro of linux on the 101 or 70. I love using linux (i have linux mint installed on all 3 computers in my home) and it'd be excellent if i could install an embedded version on my tablet, but alas, i'm a plumber not a programmer! So if someone could post a few links or tutorials to get us started ( as i'm sure there are plenty of gen 8 owners who feel the same as me ) it'd be much appreciated.
Q. Does the 101 it have the same hardware components as the 5 it? The reason i ask is that i think there is a working version of ubuntu nbr for this device and im pretty sure it has the same processor as the gen 8 tablets ( cortex arm a8 ).
Q. Would an amature linux geek like me have any hope of porting it over to our device?
Q. Would it work natively or would we need to modify it?
If anyone else has an interest in having ubuntu on their tablet please post as we have to get this bumped up the list of to do's. BTW, thanks to all you guys in advance and best of luck.

that's only running via vnc - that means no drivers for display and touchscreen and unfortunately won't get us much further
yes it's just a chroot so you can imagine as a ubuntu running with the android kernel. you could try mux the drivers from the angström to the ubuntu kernel and compile the kernel for arm processors this could work, at least integrating ev-touch will help a lot. search for google for ubuntu4arm and you will find some howto.
the reason why i'm outta this is i have not much time at the moment and without a usable on-screen-keyboard (and at the moment there is none) ubuntu is worthless for me on the tablet.
Why o why have there been so few posts on this subject? Are we the only one's interested or is it just too much work to get another version of linux on the gen 8 devices? Really not trying to be rude to any of the developers on xda because i think you guys are awesome, really, but could someone please tell us if this is a worthwhile cause or a pure waste of time and effort.

Development Linux Distro

I was curious if any of the dev gurus had a nice Linux setup that they could make a Android Development distro from?
I keep running into repo issues when trying to set up my system. This led me to go.....'why isn't there a precompiled dev distro??'
If there is....please point me towards it, as I have been searching, but if it exist it's in a deep dark part of the internet I'm yet to discover.

I think the best Idea is to set up an Ubuntu based system at the moment.
With fedora based distros (fuduntu) I allways get some issues as well.
Some month ago I ran into a site that provided some Ubuntu based virtual box images with the Android SDK installed, but as it changes alot lately I don't think it's up to date, and I can't find it anymore anyway.
Maybe the guides aren't accurate anymore??
The distro I tried was the newest Ubuntu, but with everything I attempted to install I would get permission issues and sometimes the links to repo's weren't live any longer..
Perhaps what I should ask is 'Where can I find an accurate, reliable guide to setting up my linux distro for dev use?'

Ya, Ubuntu is kinda mandatory considering the way the kernel in AoS forked from it. Ubuntu is a common one, should be able to do what you need off the USB bootable even.
Really depends on your hardware setup. I've been playing around with a portable Puppy lately - something I can use at work and on my ancient semi-sandbox laptop. If you like I can put a vanilla package together for you.

[Q] To all Dev's who would help... Compiling Kernel error

i don't know, if someone other than me have had this error in the past. I searched on Google and on XDA, but I didn't found something compairing to my Error.
I'm new to kernel compiling, so I don't have some information...please don't hit me that I'm doind something like this as my first time ! I want to learn how a kernel is going to be compiled. And as extra kick, it would be great if i can make my custom kernel for just my needs on my SE 2010 X10 Mini Pro

I did all, setting up the Environment. Because of my slow Internet Connection, iI don't want to download the whole Android source, so I'm using this Toolchain https://sourcery.mentor.com/sgpp/lite/arm/portal/subscription3053. I'm doind all in a virtual Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32bit in Vmware player 3.1.4 build-385536.
I copied the standart config from /arch/arm/configs/semc_mimmi/defconfig to .config, like in the Turtorial. I also made "ARCH=arm make menuconfig", no Problem. I didn't change anythine, because I thought I could make a mistake in the config, i just wanted to build the original source, to see if I can get this to work for some Experiments.
The Problem is when I'm executing the compile-command itself. When I'm entering "ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=/home/android/kernel/arm-cc/bin/arm-none-eabi- make". After some lines....2-5 seconds or so.... i keep getting the error on the last few line in my attachment. I tried the cyanogenmod-kernel source, diffrent kernel source file from SE but i keep getting the same error, not on the same line, but always in linux/include/pagemap.h
I'm not so good in C, I'm some kind of BASIC junkie so i'm having quite a horror with C. But i thought, the Devs here, slade_87/doxian/D4rKn3sSyS/paul-xxx, don't have such simple errors, or they do know a way, how to get through this.
Could someone look at this ? Do you know a way of direction, where the error is coming ? I think, because it's always the same with different kernel source files, the errors on my side... but i can't think of any....

Are Tablet S ICS DVB-T Modules (.ko files) available ?

I'm trying to get together all the files I need to have a go at getting a DVB-T tuner working with the Tablet S - I have all the DVB-T modules, but for a lower kernel revision, and from what I've read they probably wont work with this kernel.
I'm really not looking forward to compiling these myself as I use Windows 7 and am aware that there are issues with compiling Linux on a Windows system and being new to Android/Linux cross compiling I could cause myself more problems than I solve.
So the question is, has anyone got info on a repository for these modules compiled for ICS at our kernel revision?

could you, please provide more information about those files you uploaded.
where did you get them from? what software is used with? do I insmod them the same way as other kernel modules?

Thanks, I'll fix that link. The files i uploaded are just more compiled kernel modules, you'll need to use the tar -xvzf flag to unzip them as it was a bigger tar file than xda would allow. They're compiled from the kernel sources available from Sony...I don't have the link to the sources at the moment, but if you search the forums you'll be able to find it. The modules are loaded with insmod, the same way as before, yes. I have no idea how one would go about putting these to use but it seems like in addition to the kernel module you'll need a driver and perhaps more kernel modules for an ARM architecture that will work with the 2.6.39.4 kernel version. Looking at the avermedia's website, the support they give is for an x86 architecture so you may be out of luck unless somebody can help you out over here:

I did make this tuner work with linux mint on x86. Actually my friend Google did it mostly, so I'm not sure what I did any more. It was a long time before and I'm not very familiar with linux.
This is what Avermedia site says for both x86 and x64 driver:

I'm not sure what kernel modules you'll need, but I would look at the #include files in the driver and/or ask the people over in the forum that you listed who work on these tuners specifically. Perhaps some people from the arm-based rasperry pi community might be working on this type of thing too.

I already solved problem "insmoding" them all at once by making a script for them all as you showed me in your kernel modules thread.
At first it seems not all of them are insmoded. "no such file or directory" error. But at second script run it seems they are insmoded. I guess they are dependent on each other and need to be insmoded at right order? I also guess "file exists" means it's already insmoded?
Some of them return "exec format error" which, Google suggests, mean they are not for ARM?
anyhow nothing happens when I plug in my tuner.
I'll have to do a research starting where you sugessted but I'm setting my expectations low.
Terminal transcript of running script 3 times is in attachment. (I'll upload it later, can't do it from xda app - DONE)

maybe we can get DVB-T-Sticks working on Tablet S. Some devs got the "WinTV Nova-T"-stick working on Odys Loox. Kernel modules they used were:
dib0070.ko
dib3000.ko
dib7000m.ko
dib7000p.ko
dib8000.ko
dibx000_common.ko
dvb-core.ko
dvb-usb.ko
dvb-usb-dib0700.ko
If abactor can provide us these files we're maybe able to get it working. But I don't know if other sticks are working, too.

some of them have dependencies and others may not be compatible with our hardware even if we can build them. all of the modules are built in the same way but there may be issues due to some modules being built-in to the kernel - I don't know how those sorts of conflicts are resolved. another way to go would be to build the whole kernel again.
I would keep loading the modules until the output from insmod stops changing as you've done...or look up the dependency tree and load them in order. your way is easier.

I finally managed to get the dvb-usb.ko built with some manual editing. I'm going to post them to the other thread with all the other kernel modules. The link is posted above. let me know if this does or does not work for you guys.
If you guys are having trouble loading the dvb-usb.ko module, it may be contained within the dvb-core.ko module it seems...

Hi Kulen,
I managed to get my dongle working in Ubuntu with the correct kernel revision after a lot of hair pulling - when i tried to cross compile the modules for ARM, the compiler crashed and trashed my Linux installation, after trying for days to restore my system, i had to resort to a re-install and have not attempted anything since.

I tried all modules you posted. since some of them are in both archives I tried first those from one archive, then from another. I extracted all and then I copied ones and other over them, and then the other way. I wanted to be sure they all are there. And then I used commands you taught me. I insmoded them 5-6 times to be sure, but some modules were not insmoded. some with that exec error and some with no file error.
and nothing happened in any case.
but here we come to another problem. I'm not sure how to check it. I use Droid TV app and it says:
" Sorry, no device found or device acces denied. This application NEEDS a working DVB device, plugged into your Android device and set up with drivers, firmware and correct permissions. Make sure that these prerequirements are met and try again."
I also get some massage from android system that connected USB device is unsupported or unreckognized or something like that.
any idea how could I see which modules are/are not activated when I plug DVB tuner?

I'm sorry to hear that didn't work. Though I had a feeling that would be the case as I also had issues trying to load those modules.
I have a feeling the modules need to be adapted somewhat before being compiled or a special driver written.
Otherwise run "dmesg" from the terminal after you plug in the device. Maybe this info would be useful to someone who knows about this stuff (unfortunately that's not me

[Q] Lubuntu from OPENAos and any ideea about ChromiumOS?

Hi everyone, I was searching for a good linux distribution for my A101IT and found the instructions here: http://dev.openaos.org/wiki/LubuntuGen8 but I have a problem, I can't build it because my PC got broken 1 month ago and still can't find the parts I need to repair it (motherboard, cpu, gpu, ram, all of them got fried at once in a chain reaction caused most probably by the motherboard) so my question is. Did anyone build it and is willing to upload the files needed and post a link for me and anyone else that needs it, please?
Also I have a second question: Could I somehow adapt one of the guides for building linux to build ChromiumOS, and what would be the differances, this ofc for when I finally fix my PC or can anyone give me a guide for chrooting into it (I personally have no experience on using chroot but talked with some frinds that have been using linux for as long as linux existed and one of them sayd I should be able to chroot into chromium from an other kind of linux and then mod that system to auto-chroot on startup and somehow kick most of the host linux away keeping only chromium working, again I have no ideea if it is true or even if that's what he was telling me, but I accept and will try any ideea?

Well at least thank you for the reply, if no one will post the lubuntu files I will as soon as I manage to get my PC working again.....and perhaps will try to adapt a guide to building an other linux to building ChromiumOS, but I expect that to be a total failure.....
Let me tell u something. I tried some kind of linux but dont remember if it was kubuntu or not on my A70S before. It was bad. It cant replace ur PC.

Yah, I know it wont be great, I tried all the linux builds, and some were greater than others, and I know it won't be able to replace your pc, but it is still great for what I use my tab for, well the parts unrelated to gaming, cause I didn't try that, but anyway I play games on android and never found any interesting (or touchscreen optimised for that matter) game for linux when I used it on my pc, but anyway I still need a better linux build, the debian one at openaos is good, but the screen doesen't turn off and bodhi has problems with the sound, and overall instability and many apps I use didn't want to install (chromium, pidgin, etc) and ubuntu was kinda good, bit unstable if I remember right, and bad on the battery, but allready lost the files for that, and kubuntu was kinda the worst of them as far as I remember, but the lubuntu build tut at openaos seems to me that it could give me the best linux build for this tab......
Pc working finally but no linux yet, can't use my old pata hdd where I had linuxand also old x86 linux not working cause I didn't do sysprep, so installed new x64 windows and no space left for linux, will probbly buy a new hdd to install linux and then I'l build linux for the tab....
