Hi,
When doing a long-press on the power button of my Galaxy SII, after a few seconds, it powers off. This happens whether it is locked or not, and without asking for confirmation on the screen.
I'm using a Sena leather case, which presses on the power button. Each time I put it in the case, it powers off, then it restarts, and stays on "enter SIM pin code" screen. I may have discovered a new way to switch to Airplane mode but I'd like to avoid that.
Moreover, there is a distinction between :
- long press (2 seconds) : brings the power menu (Airplane / Reboot / Switch OFF)
- very long press (approx. 8 seconds) : switches the phone OFF
Also, these two keys are active even when the phone is locked.
Here's what I would like to do : disable both the 2 seconds press and the 8-seconds press when the phone is locked
I found some threads about key remapping applications or direct edit of keymap files, but none of them were successful.
Could someone point me out an application / a way to achieve that ? Does someone know if it's ever possible ?
(For now, the only workaround I found is a hardware one : disassemble the phone and sand the power button to reduce its height, so that it stays inside the casing)
Thank you in advance. Kind regards
My old HTC Hero used to do that too, which leads me to believe it is something hard-coded into Android itself. I'd suggest there is nothing much you can do, but wait and see if a dev replies or something.

I don't know if it's possible but if it is it has to be something in the kernel.
The 8 second power off function works the same way as the on on your PC and is used if your phone stops responding so I don't see a way to disable it with an app because it's ment to turn the phone off even if an app freezes your whole phone.
Hi,
If the 8-seconds press is hard-coded, I think precautions should have been taken to avoid unwanted power off each time you put the phone into a leather pouch !
On iPhone f/ex, you have to press both power and home button during several seconds to trigger hard reboot, which makes unwanted action hard to happen unexpectedly.
It's always frustrating to encounter such a basic problems on a $600 phone using the latest state-of-the-art technology, which powers off each time you put it into your pocket ;-)
I hoped some developer has found a way to workaround this. I googled a lot, but I didn't find anything.
So, if the power button features are hard-coded, the only solution may be to hard-remove the entire power button
Problem solved.
I disassembled the phone, I removed the power button, I carefully grinded it to reduce its height, and I put it back into the phone.
(For those who may already owned an iThing, disassembling a Galaxy SII is very easy, it's a matter of seconds with a good old mini-screwdriver; proceed carefully when grinding, because if you reduce the height too much, the buttom may break)
Now my power button height is just below the casing. It's still possible to press on it with a finger, but it does not press by itself when putting the phone into my leather pouch.
Thank you for explaining it I had an issue with my S II and it went to service to solve it, they totally changed the board and was shocked when I found the short press on power button doesn't show the power menu I used to have and it switched off immediately!
I've got to return it to service and your post made me thinking it's a simple issue! It won't take time

Tried to turn on my XDA yesteday and the button fell into the device ! This caused not to be able to turn on the screen unless I got a call. I downloaded Vito SystemTools' button maping program which allowed me to make my calendar button (when held down) to turn the screen on and off. The problem is that turning the screen on and off is not doing the same thing as the power button did. I was under the impression that all the power button did was turn the screen on and off to save battery and prevent unintended input. However, now my battery dies in 6-8 hours of use compared to the normal 2 days. Obviously, there is somthing more that the power button does.
What I'd like to know from the developers is if there is a program called by the power button and how I should access it. The button mapper program allows me to map any program I want to (almost) any hardware button (not the volume button). If it's a DLL or somthin I can probably write a wrapper program for it with some pointers.
I'm also in the market for a dummy xda or just another power button if someone has one just to get it to look better. However I like the functionality of holding down the calendar button for 1 second to turn the device on/off and would like to keep that permanently.

The power button is probably hard-wired to some processor wake-up logic. So when you turn the processor off, it's going to be very hard to make it wake up by anything else. You could write something that makes it wake up very very momentarily, say every few seconds, to check for a button-press. But my guess is what you want is a new power button.
damn Well i'm waiting on a dummy phone auction unless anyone over here has one to sell me.
I got exactly the same problem, the only difference is that i managed to get it back and i putted some silicone glue in it. It works and don't ask me how ;-)
Anyway, why don't you just press on the call - hang-up , calendar, volume button to wake the phone up?
Than just change the settings in battery power to make it shut down after 5min or 10min. It should help you reduce your battery life time since the phone gets automaticly in sleep mode after that time.
good luck,
Yann
I have my phone set not to wake up without the power button being pressed. I can turn this off but then buttons get pressed in my pocket since I don't like belt clip holders.
Hi,
I've found no info regarding the subject above, actually i found but not answers
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943243&highlight=disable+power+button
Need to disable the power button options when long pressed in lock screen. Having it awaken is fine when pressed, but i have often found the phone on silent or flight mode (& once it was switched off ) when inside a jeans pocket (mostly).
Is there a modification, not to pop the power button options when in lock screen ?
Its annoying...
Im wonder too.

hmm...i never experienced this.
Solution is keep ur phone in upward direction in ur pocket..lol
Hello,
in one of two cases the phone reactivates when I try to deactivate it. If you touch the display or one of the buttons while (or directly after) pressing the power-button the phone activates itself... that drives me crazy, because it is nearly impossible to deactivate it with one hand without touching the display at this moment.
Does anyone know hoe to get rid of that?
thanks for your help
I've experience that I think - I hit the power button to shut off the screen and lock it, and it immediately switches back on to the lock screen. It's not the end of the world as it is locked and will switch the screen back off in a few seconds, but it is strange.
Think I've figured out what's causing this - due to the size of the handset, when I go to switch it off with one hand, I find that my palm can just catch one of the soft buttons at the bottom of the handset such as the back button, so I think the back button is pressed immediately after the power button, causing the screen to come back to life.
So it's not a bug as such, maybe a design flaw.
Any thoughts?
The ONLY area it seems to work is to power up the device.
I cannot do the following by pressing it or holding it...
1.) Wake device up
2.) Pull up the shutdown menu
3.) Hold down to power off device
...and most importantly...
4.) cannot select options in CWM (but if I hold volume and power it'll get me into CWM)
Any idea how to flash it back to stock? I have a jig if that helps. Thanks.
Currently the only way I can wake the phone is to plug into a charger.
This had happened to me like 3 times. What I did in order to get back to work, was opening the phone and blast some air with those cans of compressed air use for computers.

Most likely the power button is going bad. I get these a lot. I can solder a new power button on for $50 including return shipping. You can email me @ seivad17 [at] msn.com

"Go to youtube and search how to dissemble, there are couple of video that shows a step by step process of dissembly. Now the only problem is that there isnt a specific video locating the lock button and you will have to find that yourself. So after you dissemble your phone, locate the lock and use CRC QD Electronic Cleaner I read that is the most reliable and decent one out of all sprays and all you need to do is spray around the button area, and push the lock button 20-30 times and repeat the process a couple of times. After that you should let it dry for a couple of min and then put your phone back together and it should work fine!."
This worked for me. I found it in the captivate forums. Been going 1 month strong after the cleaning!

okay I'll check that out. How about the USB port? I need a solid connection to the computer. If that's the case I can jig it, place it in download mode, and re-install my ROM and get out of the boot loop I have the phone is in. The power button then is irrelevant because I'm sure I can set the phone to wake with the volume keys thus eliminating the need for the power button. That's the other issue (and more important issue). Otherwise, I have a paper weight.

If you fix the power button and you can get into CWM (like your first post says) then you should have no problem. The power button is probably shorted out (like mine was) and you cannot use it for selection.

no I can no longer get into CWM
Short story I tried returning phone to stock and went to flash a stock image file via ODIN and it's stuck on the bootup screen.
Hey guys, so basically when I am locking my phone with the power button it locks and the phone will then wake up like .5s after the screen turns off and is locked. I start with my phone unlocked and it does everything correct except it wakes the screen after it is locked. I am running stock standard MIUI Global, no root or anything special. I have tested this to no end to make sure I am not double tapping the button and I am not holding it down or anything. Any thoughts as to what it might be?
What version MIUI global rom you're using it..?, is it official or mod/ custom version..?
You can try flashing latest global fastboot rom..with MiFlash Tool (Clean All method)..then see if that issue still apear..
This does happen to me too once in a while. Same as you, stock, MIUI 8.0.5.0. i suspect that "Wake with volume keys" option does this. You have this option ON?
mine does this. The power button seems to be a bit loose. Press it a bit harder and see what happens.
This is hardware problem, it happened to me too. You probably (like i did) at some point pressed and held power button really hard. I fixed it by opening phone and realigning power button contact plate. Fortunately, i did not break it so it was quick & easy fix.
Just open your phone, disconnect battery and buttons flex cable, remove tape from power button and realign plate a little to one side. I noticed that my power button did not react if i pressed it at bottom side (i heard mechanical click but screen did not turn on/off), at middle (normal press) and at top it reacted but most times it was like as if i pressed it twice really fast so screen turned on/off fast. So thats why i pushed plate a little to bottom where button did not react, now it works perfectly no matter how i push button - just like it did on first day when i bought this phone.
