I never liked opening my cover because it felt like it would get looser, so I saw this trick to get into bootloader mode (required to unlock or flash RUUs, etc) even on a total stock ROM (unrooted and locked).
1. make sure you have all the appropriate drivers and adb/fastboot files
2. turn on usb debug mode and connect usb cable to computer
3. then on the windows command prompt, type:
adb shell reboot bootloader
and there you go!

It is a lot easier to just use QuickBoot...
Push a button on the phone and you can Reboot, Boot to Recovery, Boot to bootloader, power off or hot boot. No battery pull, removing the cover or using a computer needed.
For a rooted phone of course. It is one of the first apps I load after rooting.
...I just hold power button and wait for the menu, then select Restart and then you can choose Recovery, Bootloader, Hot Restart, etc.

Almost every ROM I've used has it installed by default now apparently. Which is a good thing!
You don't even need to shell. Just adb reboot bootloader. I almost always do it that way because I push the boot.img in fastboot, so I'm plugged in anyway.
You don't need to take the back off. You don't need to hook it to a computer. You don't need to install a special app.
Simply power off, then hold Volume Down when powering back up.
Just make sure Settings/Power/Fast Boot is turned off before you do.

I like having fastboot on, so I use restart from the menu (it is always a full restart, not just shell) and then hold power and volume down when the button back lights go out. The lights off mean its starting to load the boot loader.
Works every time.

I tried to upgrade to the 2.2 operating system using a guide on android forums.
I originally had a rooted 2.1 OS, I don't know if I unplugged it before the process was complete or if I had to return to a stock OS prior to upgrading; however now I cannot get to download mode to use Odin again.
I have read through some threads and I have a different case, I am not stuck at the Vibrant screen, I get past it. Upon boot up I get the Galaxy S screen followed by an Android System Recovery <3e> screen with some other texts. If I hold the power button, I will get the "Power Reset or Unknown Upload Mode" screen. If I continue to hold the power button, the phone will cycle between those three modes, the Galaxy S screen, the Android System Recovery screen, and the unknown upload mode screen.
I have and am still trying different key combinations to get back to recovery mode in attempts to reload the stock OS and then continue with the 2.2 upgrade.
I have made a video that I will post when I get home later today; any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
What about pull battery plug in usb hold volume keys while placing battery back in DOWNLOAD MODE
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw
You will be ok. Learn ODIN and you will have your phone back in a hour or so.

I am no expert by any means but perhaps the following might be of help:
try selecting reinstall packages when the stock recovery screen comes up, this may allow you to access CWM Recovery.
also try-- set up odin on Pc and plug in usb cable to Pc ONLY. Then with power off and phone not connected to Pc hold down both volume up and volume down and plug the usb in FROM computer this should take you to Download mode.
Try to reboot your phone with adb.
To get into download mode do this:
remove battery
replace battery
Hold both volume keys.
plug in USB
at no time touch the power button.
Takes me into download mode every time!

if that doesn't work...
From here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848737
1. Get into Download Mode (WITH THE PHONE PLUGGED IN) by following the steps below
*Turn off the phone until you get to the charging battery screen (keep in mind, your phone is currently PLUGGED IN)
*Press volume up and down, and power all at once.
*As soon as the screen turns black, release your power button.
2. Unplug phone from USB
3. Open Odin (in Administrator if you're running W7 or Vista), try one of the ones I attached to this post, at least one of them is bound to work, some don't work for me, but works for others, some doesn't work for others, but works for me, whatever floats your boat
4. Load in the files into Odin that you have downloaded from above Just load in the files corresponding to the text field.
DO NOT CHECK REPARTITION.
5. Plug in your phone with the DL mode
6. Click start and wait for the magic
i can get into recovery mode but not dl mode, an my pc never recognized my phone via usb even when android worked

Code:
adb reboot download

If you follow the steps your phone will enter download mode, In order for your PC to recognize what kind of device is plugged into it you need the samsung drivers. Which are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929

yes, so is that fixable?
Yeah definitely fixable, You just need to install the Samsung drivers onto your PC. Use Odin to flash a stock ROM onto your device and things should be better for you. I would suggest doing some research here on XDAand getting familiar with flashing a phone. Ive recovered from where you are now(a long time ago) this phone is very resilient. I have a thread over in the Q&A section with links to a video tutorial that I made for flashing a phone from stock, rooting, then all the way up to nero. Do a search on it, Good luck!
i just need to get into need to get into download mode and get odin to recongnize my phone and i should be good, it's such a pain! ;(. But THANKS for your help! I wish theres just ONE way to get into download mode.
i just flashed simply honey 3.8 via odin, i did back to stock before via odin (came from cm7) but after flashed simply honey, my phone stucked at rainbow screen sayin partition partition stupid partition, so i read that to get rid that rainbow i should flash gb bootloader, then i flashed the bootloader via odin, yeah the rainbow has gone but my phone keeps bootloping in vibrant and bullet screen then sayin partition2 bla bla, i can't get to odin with 2 button combo, it's just go to charging wtf, i can't even get to cwm via 3 buttons combo, help me guys, thx in advance
Have you tried
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
Just checking, did you take out your battery, unplugged the usb, put the battery back in, then held vol up, vol down, and power and released all three as soon as you saw the Vibrant logo?
and if that doesnt work try all the steps above but minus one step! hold down both volume buttons except power and see if that works!

If you flashed the bootloaders then the mapping is different. Try power button and volume up without the usb plugged and with the battery in. That should get you in download mode.

You are not bricked. I just had the same thing happen flashing the light version with Rom Manager. Since you flashed the Bootloaders, the key combination has changed. Hold down the volume up and power key. Release when you see the vibrant logo-that should take you into red recovery. When there, go to voodoo, choose disable. It will tell you it is 'actually enable' and will be disabled next boot. So reboot and let it do its thing. When I did it the Android in space finally showed up.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure you don't need to go into download mode to reflash with odin, just disable the lagfix. If it doesn't boot into the Android, then volume down+power will take you into download and reflash after the lagfix is finished disabling.
EDIT 2: And with the Gingerbread bootloader, you can't go into download mode if plugged in anymore. It will not go past the charger like on the Froyo Bootloaders.
EDIT 3: Sorry got the key mapping backwards, lol here it is straight from the Bootloaders site.
Gingerbread Bootloaders - No Rainbow - Fully visible Recovery on all ROMs
Benefits - No more rainbows on Gingerbread 2.3 ROMs like Simply Honey GB, LiDroid, Asgard, etc.
Convenient Key Maps for entering Recovery and Download Modes. (I personally like these mappings over the Standard Vibrant Mapping as you can enter download mode directly without needing to turn off phone or remove battery etc...)
For Recovery - Lower Volume Key + Power Button
For Download - Upper Volume Key + Power Button

I'm impressed with your risk taking capabilities man... Dont know how old you are to Android, and I'm not commenting on that, but from what I see, you are just 15 posts old, and you managed to flash Bootloaders to your phone...
Do read the OP for possible solutions before you flash anything... That said, till you have a screen, its not a brick.
Flash the bootloaders, using the new key mapping, and then flash the ROM, you should be good to go !!!
maybe one of you guys can help me here
i have the rainbow screen and i cannot get computer to recognize phone. i have to get into download mode with a dongle and odin still does not recognize my phone. i cannot boot into recover as the screen is completely rainbowed out and I cannot see what I am doing.
Are there any suggestions on what to do from here?
Thank you
I just got the T-Mobile S5 with 5.1.1 and I want to:
1. Install TWRP.
2. Use TWRP to install the superuser zip file.
The bootloader is unlocked. I assume you need a custom recovery first before you can root the phone, right?
When I install TWRP with Odin it shows it was successful but booting into recovery shows just the stock recovery. There are tutorials that tell me how to deal with this issue but they all require the phone to already be rooted...
So... what do I do?
Uncheck auto reboot, flash, pull cord and battery, put battery back, go straight to recovery.
I actually was able to just run odin . Then while the phone is still plugged in to the computer I simultaneously held down menu and volume up. This made the phone go right into recovery. No battery or cable pull . No need to press the power button either. This worked twice for me.

2. Either use fastboot through command-line or use QuickIMG to boot a custom kernel with recovery.

Do the following exactly as outlined.
1- with the phone DISCONNECTED from your pc or charger, hold the power and up buttons until it vibrates and turns off.
2- open the flashtool and select an ftf to flash, and wait for the message that asks you to connect the phone in flash mode.
3- the phone must still be off. Hold the down button and connect the phone to the usb port in the pc. The flashing will start.
I tried that it goes back to the sony logo.

How did you try to unroot? It's weird if you don't have working fastboot or flashmode, and without those, you're pretty much screwed. Those two should work even if you screw up big-time, like flashing a wrong kernel, but you must have done something weird if they stopped working?
And let me get this straight, you are pressing and HOLDING the volume buttons when you plug it to your computer, right? Make sure that the device is completely off by pressing and holding POWER + VOL UP. It'll vibrate a couple of times. Note that you're not supposed to be connected to the computer, since it'll then just boot again.
Then press and HOLD VOL UP for fastboot (blue LED), OR VOL DOWN for flashmode (green LED flashing shortly)
You probably already know these steps, but we have to make it absolutely certain that it's a hardware issue, and not an issue with the thing you do

I was going to flash the stock rom using flashtool right but everytime i tried to put the phone into fastboot mode it would go to the battery icon. At this point the phone was working fine. But no fastboot mode at all. Then i factory erased the phone through twrp. After that it doesnt boot up. Just sony logo no led lights. Even if i do vol up or down. Straight to the sony logo. Vol up plus power button, vibrates couple of times. I redo the process and it goes back to the sony logo.

The thing is that the screen shouldn't power on when you enter fastboot. The only thing that should go on is the blue LED. I don't use TWRP, and I don't know how it wipes stuff and if it only deletes user data, or if it formats the system. If it does the latter, then it literally wipes the system partition, making it empty, so if you ever format the system, you should flash a new ROM ASAP. A little late for that now though, but I'm still not convinced that fastboot isn't working.
ONE LAST TIME
NOTE: The device should be disconnected from the computer.
1. Turn the device OFF by holding and pressing the POWER button and VOL UP. It should be disconnected from the computer by now. Got it? Nice.
2. Plug the USB-cable in the device first, since it's easier to plug it into the computer. Do not plug it into the computer yet. Only the Ultra.
3. Now HOLD VOL UP. Just hold it in.
4. Stick the USB cable, which is already inside your Ultra, to your computer WHILE still holding VOL UP.
5. The blue LED above the screen should light up now. The display should not power on or anything else. The blue LED is the only thing that should turn on.
Still nothing?

The thing is that the screen shouldn't power on when you enter fastboot. The only thing that should go on is the blue LED. I don't use TWRP, and I don't know how it wipes stuff and if it only deletes user data, or if it formats the system. If it does the latter, then it literally wipes the system partition, making it empty, so if you ever format the system, you should flash a new ROM ASAP. A little late for that now though, but I'm still not convinced that fastboot isn't working.
ONE LAST TIME
NOTE: The device should be disconnected from the computer.

Check whether the drivers have been properly installed in ur PC. If u can't get into flashmode try another system to flash the ftf. Procedure hold volume down while connecting the usb to plug. U will see a green led blink.

Oh! You probably haven't installed fastboot on your computer. Download and install, and try again.

Wooooohoooo phones alive jajaja. Thankssss. Though i got some more questions. First time i unlocked boatloader i was told to backup my TA files. what do i do with those now? I just flashed a stock c6806 unbranded rom. When i try to update the phone through settings it says it couldn't verify the update. i retried the process through sony companion app, and it says my phone is modded so it wont do anything.

The TA partition is where your DRM keys are. It's a good idea to backup those keys in case you want to revert to complete stock in the future, or when you need to send it in for repairs. Unlocking the bootloader will remove the keys, but since your device was - weirdly enough, already bootloader unlocked, I don't think you even had DRM keys to start with, which is again, very weird.
No biggie though. Gone is gone. The reason why PC Companion told you that it's been modified, is because you're rooted, and it knows it, so you'll have to unroot before you update. That's only if you're updating through official channels, but you have a second alternative; Flashtool. It allows you to flash stock Sony ROMs, or FTF-files.
But you're saying that you flashed a stock 6806 ROM now, and that's what? 5.0.2? Why don't you just download the .368-update (Android 5.1.1)? Then you'll be on the latest version.

I did unlock bootloader myself, TA file were backup. My phone is the 6806 model. The only ftf file i found on xda with a working link was for 4.2 jellybean. I just restored my TA files am going to reflash that stock rom and see what it says now.
