[Q] Is it worth flashing the new ics leak? - HTC Rezound

Is it worth the hassle of flashing the new ics leak and roms? ive been running clean rom 1.7 ics and its been fine does the new leak and roms based off of it have a performace boost worthy of the hassle of relocking and unlocking again?

I was very hesitant at first weather or not to do it. Now that I've done it and am running cleanrom 4.0 its performance is better and i, myself, am getting way better battery life. Go ahead and do it! Look for Scotts tut on how to do it. Follow it and its really easy.

Its def worth it and its rather easy if u just follow the directions.

Is there anyway to go back to GB after if you find it is not best for you?

yes very easily.
just load up GB kernel, and flash GB ROM..

Thanks Andy bones

It's got some nice things in it that I like, but I have to mention this -- my phone's running a lot hotter. And it doesn't seem like any of the usual tricks (airplane mode, CDMA, etc.) are taking any of the load off the battery. Power settings say the juice is all going to the display, but I seriously doubt that -- it's staying plenty hot even when I keep the screen off.
Also, I've never liked the fact that this phone discharges while on even when connected to a power source. They really need to keep consumption inside USB's ability to charge. If you leave it on all day even while plugged in to power you'll have a low batt after a few hours. That's ridiculous.

Did you change your CPU governor to conservative? That is one of the things on my check list to do when flashing. It really keeps it alot cooler.

Also know that if you flash back to a gb Rom you probably won't have access to external memory

How is this done? I never had to do this before on a previous build/device.

I use ROM Toolbox.
Its under the Performance tab, CPU controls. 1512 max 384 min governor set to conservative.

You should stop what you are doing and flash right now... If you follow the steps, you can be done in an hour. ICS is worth it.

Home Replacements and Battery Life

Alright, I searched and couldn't find any direct discussions about this - so I'm asking it here. Does using a home replacement app (i.e. Launcher Pro Plus) use a lot more battery life than just using the stock launcher? It means your phone is running an entire extra hungry app, so I assume it does. Does setting the replacement launcher as the default do anything in terms of what is running? Besides this, what can you do to minimize what extra battery drain there is?
From what I gather, a LOT of users are running some kind of home replacement, so I assume people have some good info. Thanks!
My battery life seems fine when I use ADW-EX or LPP. Customize your phone, use it like you want it then charge the hell out of it. Enjoy your phone...battery life disentangle last forever. Plus faux's kernel set on smartass is nice on any rom you use regardless if you use a home replacement launcher or not . I probably didn't answer your question...but just wanted to give some friendly advice.
Thanks for the tip! I'm actually about to finally root the phone. While I'd been using stock and happy with it, I never felt like I needed to, but now that I've found another home replacement that I love, I'm ready to jump in and start really setting her up. In just the 1 day I've been using LPP, it shows up pretty high in the battery usage, whereas that wasn't the case with the stock launcher, but it may be because I was fiddling with it all day to set it up. But I'm hoping setting CPU under/overclock will help optimize battery life. Between that and an extra battery I should be okay. I'll def check out the kernel, thx.
Do you recommend the Unlockr's method to root? Or the one in the resource thread in the development section?
The unlocker method worked super easy for me. And with your original question, set the home replacement app to default and restart your phone and use it for a few min then go to settings, undo the defaults set for it, and then click the stock launcher when you hit the home button. You'll have to wait a sec cuz it has to load up, which in my head makes it seem like it never really started running while your replacement launcher is always used/default.
Dunno if that helps, but I think it makes sense and is helpful, hence the sharing
Sent from my Orange Glacier MT4G using XDA App
That's a good point! I have noticed that, and it does make sense. When switching back to stock after using the replacement for a while, you DO have to wait for it to load. Hopefully that's an indication that it's not being active in the background.
And thanks for the advice on the Unlockr, that's where I went to root my MT3G, so I'll probably use them again for this one.

I'm not sure what method unlocker used but I recommend NOT using gfree just as a personal preference. Use the visionary method. It should be visionary r14 unless there's been an update.

Thanks, yeah I got Visionary and have temp-root, just have to finish it off now for perm-root.
This is a side-question - but now that I've got temp-root, I started fiddling around with setcpu, which I got when I had my rooted MT3G, and my max is 1024 MHz. Doesn't the MT4G go higher than that? Do you know how to enable the higher MHz?

You have to have a kernel that allows it to go higher, I'm like 95% sure about that, ha (brainfart). Try Faux123's kernels, I use them and love them, but dumfuq also has a really good one.

I can place another vote in favor of the unlocker method. Worked great and easy for me. The higher speeds do require a different kernel. Stock is only good for 1024Mhz... Faux kernels are great!
Sent from my Glacier running CM7
Using a different launcher shouldn't have any drastic impact on your battery life. Maybe if you're using something like SPD Shell 3D which has lots of graphical bells and whistles, but even then I don't think it'll be noticeably bad. (Me personally, I use Go Launcher EX and love it.)
The major sources of battery consumption are GPS and heavy screen use. Leaving WiFi or bluetooth on when not in use also wastes battery because your phone will be scanning for connections. If you're in an area with weak signal, your phone will spend more energy maintaining connectivity than it would in areas with strong signal. If after all those considerations you notice abnormal battery drain, you may have an app that's misbehaving.
If you're rooted and want even more battery savings, you can flash a new kernel that allows the processor to run at lower frequencies when the phone is idle. You can also flash an undervolted kernel, meaning it will perform the same functions but use less battery to do so (not all phones can tolerate this, but I've had no problems on mine). Faux123 has great kernels posted in development.

This needs some clarification. VISIONary is used to gain temproot and then to permroot once you've run a necessary script. In theunlockr's method, the script is the root.sh file; in the gfree method, gfree is the script. You use VISIONary for both methods (unless you have something else for the temproot and permroot). Gfree is widely considered the better of the two because it can do many more things than root.sh can.

[Q] Custom ROM

My wife has been having a bunch of problems with her phone going into sleep of death or freezing so I wanted to install a custom ROM for her but she likes the usability of Touchwiz, the default messenger, and the lock screen. Are there any good ROMs that keep these features but improve performance and reliability?
BTW she is currently using entropy's dailydriver kernel and she hates MIUI.

If she is running stock voltages (e.g. not undervolting) and encountering SoDs with my kernel, you may have a defective device - Try running 100% stock (stock kernel even) without using SetCPU at all. If you encounter SoDs, you have justification for a warranty exchange.
If you encounter SoDs only with my kernel and without any undervolting, I would be very interested to collect more details.

Test with stock kernel - see if it's the kernel or the device.
If the device still does it with the stock kernel, you should take it in for an exchange.

Agreed. I love UnNamed Rom and I am currently using Entropy's 1208 kernel and I see a HUGE difference in battery life, speed, and responsiveness (Quadrant score 2600 before and 3800 - 4000 after). Thank you to Entropy and gtg!! BTW, I for one did not like CM7, missing a bunch of features that Unnamed 1.3 has and much less hassle restoring my apps to my liking. Getting google apps back was a pain.
If I may ask a noob question: Anybody here tried UnNamed 2.0.0? How did it go so far? Is it worth going through re-configuring user settings again or better wait for ICS?
cheers to you all.

If you're talking about Menu>Settings? (volume, ringtone, haptic feedback etc etc) I don't think that's possible. You can restore apps with Titanium Backup, but that's the closes you could get to getting your "old settings"...
Thanks! No, I meant stuff like your email exchange server set up, juicedefender settings, tasker etc. Also, have to go back and set up your pages with apps to your liking all over again.

I upgraded several hours ago. I did *not* wipe, so I did not have to set anything up again. So far I have found no problems of any kind, no FC's, no apps or features that refuse to work, etc. Of course, I havn't tried everything so far, but gtg did say it would probably work, he just didn't recommend it in his thread because he hadn't tested.
Brilliant! I will try the same thing and report back. BTW, love how you guys support the newcomers!
Done that. Same here, back to how it was without any problems without factory reset/wipe. Question: I don't see a change, really. Is it because I did not wipe? For example swype looks just the same as before (version 3.25.91.30637.t180). Running Quadrant its now consistently at 3900, but otherwise I don't see a change. What am I missing?

This is still UnNamed. Now based on 2.3.6. Some new things noticable, like overscroll glow, and screen rotation animation from ICS. Some things not obvious such as take picture during a call. List of new additions in his thread in the OP. Modifications to touchwiz to optomize smoothness - I can't really tell the difference, except now the windows won't scroll continuously, which is a negative feature as far as I am concerned. gtg said it had to be disabled to improve the smoothness.

Just a quick follow up. Using it since yesterday without problems. Battery life (asked on some other threads) is excellent. I would guesstimate 2 - 3 %/hour batter drain on light usage (running JuiceDefender custom settings) which is pretty good. I am not sure what I should be seeing/be excited about when swiveling (sorry). All the apps that I regularly use are doing fine. Looks to me like another solid gtg product. BTW, quadrant hovers around 3600. I am not overclocking, defeats the purpuse of battery saving for me. cheers.
Seconded on Unnamed ROM. Though, the CRT off animation for me is flipped in 2.1.0 -_-

Back on GB Ruu & Still burning batteries

I'm S-Off and RUU'd back to GB because the new firmware/radios had me down about battery life. Before the leak, I used to get ~10hrs total battery time with normal usage on stock battery. Once I went to ICS Leak, that was down around 6 so I figured I'd go back. After a few days being back on GB, I've found I still can't get my battery to last. I'm running Ineff. 1.4 and Incredikernal 6 currently, and When my screen is on (brightness set at 20%) for 10min I'll drop 15%. Anyone have words of advice? I'm seeing people with ridiculous battery life and wondering if I should run the GB RUU again. Thoughts? Also battery still burning upwards of 118 when screen is on for a little bit.
The latest ICS kernel was the biggest issue with battery life...
What settings do you have on the kernel?
I'm just letting it run, no Set CPU settings or anything. Should I not let it govern itself?

The first thing I did with s-off was downgrade to the latest GB RUU from the ICS leak. Now I'm on eng hboot and CleanRom 4.3 Pro with the GB patch and stock kernel that's packaged with the ROM. This was all yesterday. Today I've got 41% battery left after 16 hours (extended bat.) and have used the phone considerably setting up the ROM and reloading all my apps, plus several phone calls, emails and texts. I don't have 4G in my area so that's turned off and I know that 4G is a significant drain but this is noticeably better than what I was getting. I'll have a better idea in a couple of days when everything settles in.
I definitely would run the stock kernel for your testing purposes with no CPU control. If you still have major issues I'd look towards an app or location service that's enabled.

im getting great battery life back on stock ruu gb with the new patched eng hboot 2.11.111 and set cpu (1020 high, 192 low on conservative) and i play MUSIC ALL DAY AT WORK 9 FULL HOURS OF DRE BEATS ON!. also my break and lunch im on facebook and on the phone with my gf. i get like 12 hours out of my regular battery. just my 2 cents. i had ics and its blow bigtime. i dont even want the ota really.
I've been working on my friend's rezound. He's been suffering wake lock issuses since applying the 2.01 OTA. Battery has gone from about 10hrs on full charge, to about 4hrs. I unlocked bootloader and tried updating to the ics firmware and trying an ics rom but still has the same issue. I performed the s-off wire trick and rolled everything back to stock firmware and rom and that didn't work. never messed with a custom kernel. Anyone have any ideas for a fix? Or are we just going to have to wait for an official update from verizon? I've read of people on the verizon forums complaining about wake lock as well.

Ive noticed worse battery life as well after going s-off. Thought i was going crazy.
There are definitely degrees of badness here.
GB on GB firmware/radios is the coolest.
GB on ICS firmware is warmer.
ICS on GB firmware is even warmer.
ICS on ICS firmware is the hottest I've seen.
I cannot run screen-on indefinitely on any ICS without overheating the battery.
I had the same problem it appear suddenly
Cell standby took near as half screen does
I did try many rom
Only full wipe helped including internal strong
Now I'm with inf1.4
Battery is the gr8est
On the wake lock issue, someone discovered the AOSP lockscreen was preventing the phone from sleeping correctly. I can't remember if it was a certain combination or just the lockscreen running a background process.
Since you've tried all kinds of stuff I don't know if that applies to you or not but if nothing else I was hoping it might spur a thought process or new ideas for research.

Better battery life on ViperRez 1.0.3

Hi,
I installed ViperRez 1.0.3 and I found this rom perfect for me, but the battery life was bad.
So I wanted to test another ROM. When I tested Nil's Business 2.3, I found the battery life was better.
Then I got an idea: Install ViperRom and flash the Nil's Business PH98IMG.zip.
Now, my battery life is doubled and I have no problems
thx will try
i used underclock to 600mhz
to get better battery [screen time] however idle is ok for me
just flashed, found that the kernel is the same.

Try cpu monitor widget by coconuts from the market and see how your cpu is working compared to what set cpu says...even using different governors.
check "enable profiles' within setcpu (don't need to set one up, just check the box) and your phone will get faster. For me it enables the 2nd core to be used more frequently, or all the time.
Just sayin...and there's been a ton of stuff written about setcpu, perflock...etc already so no need to rehash.

(note: this is my extended 3.7v battery and i removed my it at one point so theres actually three more hours added to the time on battery before it died adn this is light to med use all day) this really is honestly the best combination ive seen for battery life on the rezound.i cant say its doubled..at least personally. if anyone has any other suggestions im open to hear them..

i dont seem to see any kernel in rom manager for down load:/ a couple screen shots on where would be awesome if you have the time..
One major improvement for battery life is customizing Juice Defender. They way I set mine up is as follows:
Enable data for anything that requires data (i.e. browser, market, etc...)
Disable data for anything that doesn't require data (i.e. Launcher, Music, Messages, etc...)
Enable/Screen Off for anything you stream or tether (i.e. TuneIn, Grooveshark, DI, etc...)
What this does is only enable data for anything you actually need data for rather than right after unlocking the screen. Sure you may have to wait a second or two after launching the market before data is enabled, but by the time you're done typing in your search it should be ready to go anyways. Just a couple pennies for anyone trying to max out battery life...
Here is my screenshot.

This kernel is the exact same kernel in Viper 1.0.3. If you're getting better battery life it's probably from using the ROM for a few days and not from flashing.
Yea I was going to say but you beat me to it, they are the same kernels.
Let the ROM settle, and your battery life should increase over time, then hold steady.

Hi guys.. ive been flashing all kinds of rom and kernel. In the end i find stock Ics with stock kernel gives me both the performance and battery life i need after removing useless start up and freezing unwanted apps.
Had been using the default touchwiz and suprising theres no lag or redraw or whatever issues. Only set back is i cant customize my stock rom.
Battery life wise i can get up to 6 hrs screen time or maybe more. Will post screenshot after i drain my battery.
On jellybean, batt drain is more noticeable regardless using stock or any other jb roms / kernels. Personally i dont like OCing or undervolting so pls dont mention abt those here.
I am wondering who else here share the same experience with both ICS and JB. Would u still stay on ics or jb?
Would love to hear opinions

Says it all really
I've recently returned to stock rom and kernel after trying warnamlite, miui and a few others. Stock is deco the next for battery. I'm getting nowhere near 6 hours screen time though. How are you stopping apps from starting up? Is this by freezing or have you used another method?

You got 6 hours of screentime with data/wifi on with ICS?
Personally I've been getting better battery life with MIUI on Jellybean, but I've also been using Siyah since the first day I flashed my ROM so that might also have something to do with it. I've had experience with stock ICS and MIUI ICS as well, and the battery drain was essentially the same. I'm running a heavily customized JDUltimate though. If you don't want to undervolt or flash another ROM/kernel then JD is a great alternative. I was using stock GB on my S2 with nothing but Juice Defender and I got pretty decent battery stats, though I can't remember them right now.

What does that mean, I don't even know if it is good or bad?

Root the phone. Use ES task manager to remove useless startup. Freeze those apps u dont need with tit backup. Btw i never deleted any apps

Hi .. yes approx 6hrs screen time. With only 3g. But i setted my display to around 20% brightness as im indoor most of the time. I usually use the same setup to test among roms and phones as ive got 2x S3 to play with. One of it is my gfs phone. She plays lots of games so i also hear her feedback regarding the roms and kernels i flashed for her.
I find using auto brightness actually drains the battery more with continus use. I also make sure i got only essential tasks ans apps running in backgrd. Btw i have whatsapp in backgrd all the time.

Yeah I have my brightness at the lowest setting most of the time as well, as the only time that I'm going to be in bright daylight is when I'm walking around, and I'm not going to be looking at my phone while I'm crossing the street and whatnot I figured that all of those "auto" settings actually drain more battery because of their constant turning off and on and adjusting and etc...it seems like it would consume unnecessary CPU power.
How do you manage which apps run in the background?

1. Root the phone
2. Install all the apps / games
3. Use ES task manager to remove unwanted startup
4. Use tit backup to freeze unwanted apps.
System apps like mapservice, secphone, samsung pushservice etc that runs in the background are frozen with tit backup and startup removed by ES task manager.
Result : No useless bloat running in your phones background. Better batt life and performance. I can achieve 300mb ram after a fresh reboot. Stays aroumd 400 to 500 range of ram after a day. Will observe ram a day more as i just flashed stock 3days ago.
But so far so good. Quad benchmark scores are a minimum 5.4k too! Will post screenshots on weekend.

Here are my ram usage after a days use. Task manager screenshot is proof of what i had been doing with my phone without any restart.
Cant post batt life yet cos my phone is still at 75% lol.

I went back to ICS cos of battery life I need phone that is stable first! and then battery that can last 12 hrs min with 4-5 screen time, unfortunatly ICS from my experience is just fine.Shame I want JB as well but need to be at least stable as ICS

I do care if I can change system stuff in the rom but Stability FIRST I just hope SAMSUNG will do it right this time and will provide Stable 4.1 Sammy I belive if you could do ICS stable then 4.1 will be grater for battery as well.Hope the wait for Btu is worth waiting

An Aussie? Smutty humour? Never!
(I also had a juvenile chuckle earlier when someone said tit backup!)
So far my experience is in ICS's favour.
Ok. JB is latest. FIne.
BUT TELL ME SOMETHING WE CAN DO IN JB AND NOT IN ICS?
I didnt see even a single sort of such think except some added settings in settings app.
Even looks are same.
We can easily mod the ICS rom to make it look better.
For looks and functions of JB, we can use launchers ofcourse!
And personally, in JB, my ram normal usage was 500+MB.
In ICS, with same apps, its 200-300 MB. How and Why? Both stock kernels.
Also, i am used to playing games while charging. In JB, the battery only declined, even while charging when i played game. But in ics, there is charging instead of discharging even when i play games.
Therefore, jb is mess for me! So unstable with lesser battery....
"Like for ICS, comment for JB"

Yeah, I typed out several replies, not sure what would get me banned but I am sure a couple of them would've been close.
Users want update because its an update not because its better other wise noobs would not have flashed leaked test roms or Polish firmware .
