Hi Guys,
Just got an Xperia S. I have an issue with the camera. The video is very choppy when taking a picture. Its like I'm shooting the picture in night mode(And I'm not). All settings are default.
Now when i record video its perfect.
Its kind of hard to explain so I've made a video of it which is attached.
Just like to mention that in the camera settings my "Focus mode" setting is greyed out when in the photo mode.(Don't know if this is significant.
My exposure is set to 0. If i bring it all the way down to -2 image isn't choppy anymore but it becomes way too dark.
Anyone else having this issue? Any idea if this is an issue or is the camera like this?
Would it be possible to delete the camera app and reinstall it?
Thanks in advance

Did you try changing the capturing mode to scene recognition if it exhibits the same?

Yeah tried that still same issue.
Update: When I'm in sunlight its fine. Its only when I'm indoors/low light that this happens even though the setting is set to manual and not automatic.
Can you post some pictures taken with the phone showing your problem?
Edit: nvm, I thought he meant photo quality since the thread title implies this, but he means video.
mines the same :S also when i press down the camera button during standby it'll take a pic, but when i do it with the home screen on, it doesnt take one...anyone got the same problem?

No i mean the photo quality. When I'm in the camera app its very choppy. Ive returned the phone and waiting on a new unit so i don't have any pictures i took indoors on me but heres 1 which were taken outside. Even in daylight theres a sort of haze.

Are you using a transparent casing? I have a transparent casing on mine and the flash reflects off it into the lens. Just remove the casing and it will be ok, or shoot without flash.

When it is dark, the phone automatically slows shutter speed to increase light to the sensor. This causes the choppiness. This is the disadvantage of a camera phone vs normal camera where you can control the shutter speed.
On the night mode taking shot is always slow. But the pics can be great.
But the above pic shows it may be a problem with the hardware.
I had the same problem but I solved it, by wiping it!! I just had some smoo on the lense is all make sure it's clean

Hi all.
Recently I've noticed that it takes about 5 (!) seconds from the minute I press the camera button till the shot is actually being taken.
Anyone noticed it?
Someone knows a solution?
Are there any better alternatives to the stock camera app?
Thanks!
Has to do with the focus. It needs to focus to get a nice and sharp picture.

But also when I set the focus to macro or face detection it takes a lot of time
Ive had this issue also. The shutter time is horrible. I have an app called tasker which allows me to change the amount of time it takes for the camera to take the picture once i press the button.
Thanks, Will try that
Unfortunately, tasker is like 6bucks, but well worth it. It does WAY more than just fix the shutter lag. As far as i know, there isnt an app to fix just the lag on the cam. I havent found one anyways..
Take your phone outside when it's bright. Take a shot. The focus and capture should be near instantaneous. If not, then it's a hardware fault and you should have your phone replaced.
If it works, then the reason your cam was slow is due to insufficient lighting. You can't expect any camera to focus and capture instantly in low-light environments. Maxing out the ISO setting will help with the shutter speed but you'll end up with disgusting noisy pictures.
How does Tasker fix the shutter lag???
I use fast burst camera app. It can take 5 pics in quick burst or just single shots. Photos are taken the instant you hit the button

5 pics burst, the image size is disgustingly small from what I hear. But the single pic shot, is that full resolution?
Hi all, I've recently become tha proud father of a wonderful little lady D) and that's a crucial info to understand the fllowing question:
is that only me experiencing camera shutter lag?
I mean, I cannot ask my son to freeze when taking picture of her and now I see that there's about 1 or maybe 1.5 second lag when hitting the shutter button before the picture is taken. This leads to many blurry pictures! Annoying indeed!!!
Having bought the phone a month before my son was born, I didn't notice this problem at the beginning.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I could find any post dealing with it!
Thanks in advance
That's not lag, that's due to focus taking time to adjust. You have to hold the camera button first to lock the focus, the view pointer will turn green, then you need to press it again to take photo.
And turn on Anti-Shake option under Settings.
BTW- Congratulations for becoming dad. Post a photo of your little angel if you can.
Regards.

Hi, thanks for your reply and even more for your congratulations!
MAybe I was not that clear, my fault, of course first of all I tap to focus and only when the box turns green I press the shutter button. Anyway, there's 1 second (sometimes a little more) before the picture is taken!
That is the lag I'm talking about.
Just to be crystal clear: I own an iPhone 4 and there's absolutely no lag when I press the shutter button, even if I don't get the focus first!
Now I get your point, but I think its normal. I think it also depends on the ISO settings, higher the ISO is faster the photo taking time and vice versa. Maybe when you have lag, you are shooting at night or low light conditions. Try to set the ISO at a higher level and see if the problem persists.
Regards.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Anyway, it would be better to have such a setting automatically, without having to set everytime the camera manually!
Don't you think so?

it is an automatic setting, but it is set up to take the best quality picture, not the quickest. i would suggest changing it to sports mode on the scene settings.
Hey guys, I haven't seen this question asked outside of the CM7 Thread.
I have UnNamed 1.1.0 Which to my knowledge is identical to stock when it comes to the camera aspect.
When I'm taking a picture it will look great on screen but when I go review it in the gallery it looks almost twice as dark. Almost like the shutterspeed is too quick and wont let enough light in. Outdoors the problem isnt too persistent. Just indoors. I'm going to try another gallery app and see if that help but doubt it will. Anybody else notice this?
I was actually playing with the camera last night and noticed this.
Tried adjusting the ISO and exposure and it helped a little. I noticed that after viewing the picture though, it still turns out a few shades darker than it does in the live view. Not sure what thats about.
I'm seeing this issue as well. Any resolution?
I noticed this too, not only that but there is a slight delay from when you hit the shutter.
Seems like any movement screws up the picture as well.
I think the brightness discrepancy has to do with the screen brightness settings.... try setting your brightness way up, then take a photo and see if your exposure "gets darker".... it should be the same as how it looked when you took the photo...
I think when you take a photo, the camera app automatically brightens the screen to the Max... then when you go to review the photo, your screen brightness settings take over... since most of us use the phone NOT at the highest setting, it makes the exposure look dark....
The same theory goes for anyone editing photos... I always brighten my screen when I edit the photos...that way I'm not adjusting a photos exposure if it doesn't really need it... this needs more practice though as I don't edit often and could be wrong ...
If you're having lag in the shot... try turning off the anti shake option... you might think anti shake can ONLY be good but I find that my photos are fine without it.... but I also know to not try to take photos in dungeons...
Thanks ill try it

I have the exact same problem, from both front and back cameras. Same in third party camera apps, exposure controls simply do not function as expected, no change at all. HDR picture mode seems to work fine though.
Not a serious enough problem for me to RMA, but it is a small dent in the glory of the S3 for sure..

I also had this issue and was deeply disappointed, because my optimus 2x made much better shots in low light because of the exposure compensation.
I found the solution today: I used the hidden camera menu *#34971539# and discovered that my camera was ZDFE02 and the phone firmware was ZDFE03. If your phone to cam button is greyed out, do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32721917
After copying the file to internal SD, restart, then update and restart. You get new cam firmware and now the exposure works.
can anyone help me, I have a problem with my sg3 camera when I go to take a picture the auto focus always red, never turns green!

Are you getting a clear picture on screen, does it look blurry or obscured. If the think you what to photograph is a dark object that can cause probs with auto focus as well. You might have dust under the lens cover that can also cause lock on problems.
