Hi all, I'm Martin from Argentina, I write to ask and know if you can help me or guide me to find a solution.
I have a U20i that brought me outside.
When I received the phone had Android 1.6 and upgrade to 2.1.
I do not remember if the previous version had 3G, with almost no use.
My phone provider supports 850 and 1900 MHz bands.
In the configuration, network mode, I can see options:
- WCDMA
- GSM
- GSM / WCDMA (preferred)
When I search for available networks, I see only 2G networks.
Phone Details:
Mobile Network Type: EDGE
Firmware Version: 2.1-Update1
Kernel Version: 02/06/1929
Build Number: 2.1.1.A.0.6
Can you help me get a 3G signal?
PD: Sorry for my English
Thank you very much.
Greetings.
U20i does not support 3G on the 850/1900 bands. No one can help you get 3G signals with that phone.
Than you...
I confirm that I have an U20i

Here's the non-sensitive stuff. You're on your own with sim serial and the others. They would be different from our phones anyway...

Hi guys,
I'm currently an AT&T customer who's thinking to switch to Tmobile's
$30/month for Unlimited text&web plan
After googled some articles regarding AT&T X10a and the Tmobile(USA) 3G
I'm still not really clear about some key facts.
Please allow me to explain my situation now:
Origin: I bought it from AT&T store
Unlocked? YES
Model: X10a (I found this on the sticker located on the back of my phone)
********************************************************
But I flashed to different baseband and ROM
Info. I found in the "About Phone"
Model number: X10i
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: 2.1.71
Kerel version:2.6.29-00054-g5f01537
[email protected]#1
ROM: Wolf_Xperia_6.0.0s (Android 2.3)
I found a thread and somebody mentioned about:
"The AT&T XPERIA X10A supports the 850HMz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz, and 2100HMz bands. So since the phone doesn't support the needed 1700MHz band, the phone will be stuck with 2G speed on the T-Mobile network if you continue using the Sony Ericsson generic world 2.1 (for X10A) firmware."
Currently, I am using AT&T SIM card and data plan as well, and I have NO problem getting "H" at most of the time and sometimes "3G"
Q1: Is that means my phone is STILL X10a but not X10i which was shown
in the "About Phone"?
Q2: I will NOT get Tmobile HSPA/3G working on my phone, unless I get a X10i?
or I can flash it and/or de-brand it?
This question might be asked somewhere, but my case is a bit different,
since I am using different baseband and ROM from stock.
If anyone had same experience and/or you already knew the answer,
please help me out
Thanks in advance
James
X10a will remain x10a even though it shows x10i. For the 3g I am pretty sure T-Mobile is 1900Mhz for gsm? Correct me if I am wrong
Sent from my Xperia X10 using XDA App
Thanks, that helps a lot.
btw I knew that T-mobile uses 1700/2100 for its HSPA

Yes, like jailbroken iphones, an X10a will only receive at about 119kbps (edge) when connected to T-Mobile network.

Okay, so this is a long shot but I've got a friend out in Canada and I've sent them my old ST15i. Their provider is Rogers, so GSM works but nothing else does as HSPA requires 850/1900 which won't work with it currently at 900/2100. So I've done a bit of reading and found that theres an ST15a which uses 850/1900/2100 and I'm curious to know if the hardwares the same and the firmwares the only difference? I'm thinking that maybe if the baseband was changed to whatever the ST15a uses then it might work? That or if the 4.1.B.0.587 firmware (Generic Trade US version) was forced onto the ST15i?
This thread (link) at post #16 shows how to spoof the device to an ST15a. Apparently running SUS with the repair option will then install the complete firmware, which is also listed on wotanserver.com.
As I no longer have the device and it'll be hard to explain how to modify it to a friend, could someone please try to upload the ST15a Generic Trade US firmware v4.1.B.0.587. That or if you could tell me which baseband works best in the US and/or Canada then that'd be a huge help.
Heres some images I located online which may help:

My guess is the hardware radio is different, but I'd like to be sure.
Thanks.

i think ur right as u said its hardware related. also this editing build.prop isnt a great thing. u can try it, just change all strings with ''..st15i to ''st15a
and then hope sony pc updater will make it --> bcuz AFAIK there isnt any .587 fw with a build st15a....
so u can only test (or ur friend)
u can go to this tread where mostly all xperia fw are to download http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/35239?tstart=0 AND THERE ISNT ANY ''a'' build for xperia mini :`(....

Yep, that's the problem I'm facing, getting ahold of the firmware for ST15a. It should exist since it's on wotanserver at the bottom of their list.
http://www.wotanserver.com/en/sony-ericsson/xperia-mini-st15/4-1-b-0-587/language-download
My hope is that someone here has the phone and can upload the firmware or the baseband they're using from it, but like I've said, the radio is probably different but I can't be sure since it could just be software controlled.

i figured out the problem, after some research: the main problem is not the ROM its the baseband file, bcuz rom is mostly allways same from st15i to st15a... but baseband makes ur phone supporting other 'bands' like u need i found serveral forums also german one for ARC, were both were attached, (baseband files), i asked and they tell me sure its the baseband not ROM! the only thing is the rom files are factory images with rom, kernel, baseband, etc all in 1 file so it must be a ''st15a'' version of this; BUT WHAT U REALLY NEED IS A BASEBAND FROM A AMERICAN USER!! (or simply a baseband st15a which support needed bands!) - id didnt found any baseband ''a'', also u can use st17a basebands on it too, so if i see a US-user i ask him to push it from his phone - that all for now , no idea
sry, hope u find it anywhere!
peace
OK, so if it's only baseband problem AND Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro are nearly identical devices - is it possible to flash baseband from sk17a firmware? It's my question, cause I found Sk17a 4.1.B.0.431 Generic Trade US firmware. So if it will fit also a ST15 - I can upload it.
here it is: Baseband from sk17a

Yes afaik yes bcuz i using .86 baseband for st17i also all report from other baseband threads can confirm this
Yes hopefully the hw support is universal, but what can go wrong? If not he can flash back old baseband....
I was bit confused bcuz some user one one thread says he lives in mexico and still "i" version works?!? May he he also tries to reset apn settings??
Ican test. The baseband but i live in europe so i cant see if it works on american bands but it try and see result..
--------------------------------------------EDIT---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ok i tried to flash baseband on flashtool, but i didnt works. also get some strange output:
flashsystem.X10FlashException: ERR_SEVERITY="MAJOR";ERR_CLASS="SECURITY_CLASS";ERR_STATIC="IMAGE_ADDRESS_RANGE";ERR_DYNAMIC="SIN-block eraseblock mismatch"
simply i think baseband is not compatible in some way
- bcuz other baseband flash works.
- maybe its bcuz iam on 4.2.2 or it really checks device (& st15a HW is really bit diffrent)...:crying:
- but im sure that the problem isnt that it is for sk17a , like said bfore
sry but now i simply dunno..
I looked into it and it's a flashtool saftey feature. It stops you from flashing the wrong ROM data to your phone. It can often be bypassed by using an older version of flashtool, as seen in this thread where flashtool 0.6.7.0 did the trick. You just need to remember to wipe your data, so make sure you have a backup first.
I'd test it myself but as I no longer have the phone I wouldn't want to tell my less tech-savvy friend to do it as then it'll be a nightmare to put right.
I found a list of networks within the baseband and Rogers is there, but I don't know if it's GSM or not.

Thanks to both of you for the info so far
Now I'm a little bit confused. I've flashed baseband from SK17a, everything went fine. But after that I could connect to GSM. Sooooo I did some research - and every site told me (I checked also my phone box - it tells me exactly the same ), that SK17i and SK17a are multi-bands So they work in 850/900/1800/1900/UMTS/HSPA So I'm afraid it's not only the baseband
I checked also for Xperia Mini - it's the same situation
The only differences are propably with FM Radio app - since USA and EU use different frequencies
Anyway - maybe APNs are incorrect. So that's why only gsm works
The info isn't 100% correct.
ST15i:
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
HSDPA 900 / 2100
ST15a:
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100
The ST15i doesn't have access to the HSDPA frequencies found in the ST15a, but as both have the same GSM frequencies then of course that'll work. My friend needs access to the HSDPA frequencies from the ST15a for faster speeds since most networks in Canada don't use 900 / 2100 for the faster speeds.
The hardware could be identical and the baseband may control what frequencies it has access to, or it could be a totally different radio and changing the baseband won't have any effect. So the only way you'd know if changing the basebands worked is if you normally connect via HSDPA. Once you've flashed the SK17a baseband you'd then either fail to connect via HSDPA or you'd notice that it's got worse since it'll only have access to 2100 MHz.
When it comes to the APN info that's already something I preloaded onto the device. And it's due to the info online that I thought HSDPA would work, but they've simply forgot to mention that the HSDPA 850 / 1900 frequencies are for the American version only.
As you've successfully flashed the file I'll get my friend to try it too, but I have my doubts after finding this thread today that says the radio is physically different in the A and I versions.
Hi there, Could anyone tell me why my phone is configured as x10i bands? as the service menu says:
Working band/s:
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900
UMTS_BC1, UMTS_BC4, UMTS_BC8
Well, this happened after flashing my x10a from 2.1.update-1 to 2.3.3, I don't know how to reconfigure the bands but I think is something related to the Trim Area partition because I flashed several generic roms such as:
-x10a (2.1.update-1 - 2.3.3)
-x10i (1.6 - 2.1.update-1 - 2.3.3)
Then the results are the same x10a still configured as x10i's working bands for 3G.
