It looks like despite the fine work that the devs are doing lots of people are having lots of issues. I had mine last week and worked myself into a real mess. So now that I'm starting fresh with a BN-partitioned and -updated to 1.4.2 NT. I'm taking my time about touching stock rom this time around. Easy enough to do since I am successfully running CM7 off a 16gb sd card with the neatest dual boot system I've seen yet: cold boot=cm7; reboot=stock. Love it!
However, I would like to be able to use the NT for my apps and use the whole sd card just for media files. So I would like to root it and sideload apps. I haven't seen a report yet from anyone who has been able to successfully root an NT that was partitioned and updated by BN. If you have, please let us know how you did it and how it's working.

I haven't done it myself yet but there's a thread under the Nook Tablet General about a few people had B&N re-partition and don' seem to have any problems.
"Barnes & Noble Nook TabletNook Tablet GeneralB&N To Repartition Tablets"
(don't know how to add the hypertext link).

I had no problem rooting using Albert Wertz's newest SD card rom (4.6) on a B&N-repartitioned nook running 1.4.2. It went very smoothly (both the repartitioning and the re-rooting) and everything is working great. Absolutely no issues whatsoever. Hope this helps!

I just re-read the initial post and I see that you asked for details. Here's exactly what I did (please forgive the extreme detail--I just wanted to cover every step):
First I unrooted my tablet and returned it to stock factory condition (opened Nook Tab Recovery flasher, then pressed the button for "Flash Stock Recovery;" then I opened Nook Unroot app and ran that). When it was back to stock condition and running 1.4.0 (that's how it was when I bought it), I manually added the 1.4.2 update I downloaded from B&N's site to my SD card and restarted the nook. It loaded 1.4.2. Next, I removed my SD card and headed out to the local B&N. The first employee I met took my tablet and began the process by erasing and deregistering it from the settings menu. He didn't ask for a receipt or look for evidence of rooting or anything else--he just got to work! Once the nook was erased and deregistered, he powered off and placed the store SD card in my tablet, then rebooted by plugging the nook into a wall charger and letting that power the tablet on. Once the new software loaded, he rebooted the nook and I re-registered and checked the software version (1.4.2) and the partition sizes (all as promised) and that the tablet was working fine. No problems at all. Total time in store: about 10 minutes.
Once I got home, I went to my computer and downloaded Albert Wertz's newest SD root rom onto my desktop, inserted a reformatted 32 GB Micro SD card into my computer, and followed Albert's instructions via his youtube walk-through. It's all here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630
After I rooted and rebooted system, I checked the software version (still 1.4.2) and checked for partition size (still had all the new space from B&N repartition--yay!).
The whole re-root took far less time than it took me to type this reply, as did the B&N repartition. It all seemed pretty easy and painless and my nook is now running all my android market and amazon apps as well as a few I bought from B&N. Everything's working flawlessly so far. Again, i hope this helps someone!
The fact that is partitioned has nothing to do, as i have explained before the File System Name of the partitions are still the same and they keep having the same format (/media : fat32 ; /userdata : ext4). So that has nothing to do, as for the Firmware version 1.4.2 it can be rooted using the sdcard root >> development section BUT you will not be able to sideload (at list the easy way) so that for me is not a worthy update.
I recommend you to go back to 1.4.0 IF your Nook Tablet is the 16GB model.
~ Veronica
As I said above, I'm rooted using 1.4.2 on a 16GB tablet and I sideloaded half a dozen apks and hundreds of files yesterday alone. I sideloaded the DC Comics app, the Comixology app, NookHome, Marvel Comics app and others and they all work fine. I used them all last night. Not sure why other people are having problems...Is it just the 8GB nook that has sideloading disabled with 1.4.2?

Problem after preparing to boot from sd
Albert!
Thanks for posting so much info online.
Since I have no been following the process since the experimental phase, I'm sort of lost here.
I have used gparted, created the partition, unzipped and put the files from your link into my sd cards root directory. I followed along with your video.
Your post says this works with 1.4.0 and 1.4.1, so did I miss the part where it mentions that you need to revert to 1.4.0 from 1.4.1(which i am running). Or is this sd card with the boot images supposed to work regardless and one is to revert after rooting?
I reformatted my sd card a few times. I do not place it in the nook until it is powered down. Unfortunately once the card is in my nook will not power on.
Do i need to install drivers for the nook tablet, and if so which ones and then power on while connected?
Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
Denis
This process is so finicky that I need u to list every step u are doing for me to help u troubleshoot. One wrong step or wrong connection and u have to start over. Even after the card is created.
Did u set flags correct? Did u use alternative way of connecting SD card for format? Did u put in off tablet that is not connected by USB? Was tablet stock when u tried it?
So many different ways to screw this up...

Try remaking the card and using the USB cable to turn it on instead of the power button.

Another thing to try.
Remove SD card
Turn on
Turn off
Hold power and n button at same time until turns on and off
Let go power and n button
Now put in SD card
Turn on. See if cwm boot
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I've actually had to tinker with it a bit and I've found that if you hold pwr + n and let it try to boot into CWM it won't get past the black N.
Then you do the same thing and when the black N comes up just let go of the power button while still holding the N button and it should boot into CWM.
Hey sorry for the delay and thanks for the suggestions already.
I used a stock NT running 1.4.1.
Next i used my computers sdmicro reader to create the partition using gparted, boot and lba flags checked.
I did not have the NT on when the sd card was inserted.
So with NT off I inserted SD card with files in root directory from your finalized post.
From here the NT will not boot.
I will try the various suggestions and report back.
Do you think that the card is corrupted at this point even if the NT was not on and so far that is the only time it has been inserted? (NT off, hit power, no response, sd card removed.)
Thanks for your time, and a donation is coming your way and to everyone else involved with the files tomorrow, because its payday!

So I tried to hold both power and n button, no boot, in fact the n doesn't even appear.

Would Factory Resetting my NT work?
I just reformatted my sd card, retransferred files from your post, and factory reset my tablet.
Similar Booting Challenges
I'm having the same problem as drimbaut.
The SD Card will not boot for me. My NT might be the culpret. Originally I rooted the tab using Zergy from 14.0 then had an the OTA update wipe that out and force 14.1. Revered back to 14.0 re-zergy'd - showing 9.9.9, worked great for about a week then I powered off and market disappeared as well as any Google app.
9.9.9 stilled showed as the NT version, B&N was the only home screen.
After recovering to 14.0 - the Zergy process works until DeBloat and when I make a selection the NT reboots and leaves the NT in a kind of root limbo. Re-run Zergy at that point, it tells me I'm already rooted. I load apps, but upon powering off.. my Apps start disappearing, and my Home screen reverts back to B&N. My NT version still shows 14.0.
Am I just hosed? My hope was that the SD card would bypass all of this, but I've reverted back to 14.0, and the NT doesn't boot from the SD Card.

Sorry for the long post
Changed out files, Instructions and Video. Now Version 4. I swear Version 3 worked and I videotaped the hell out of it, but even I could not replicate it the next day. I guess the stars were aligned right or something. Very clear instructions, should have no problems with this. Works perfect, every time.
Thanks in advance!
I will follow your new vid/instructions and report back!

Great news!
The process was successful!
I reformatted my sd card using my computers card reader and gparted.
Added the new V4 files as instructed. Only difference between my method and yours was making the whole card a partition as in the previous vid.
Once I wrote the image with windisk something strange happened where my card said it had to be reformatted via computer.
Since the files had to be deleted I figured might as well forge ahead and see what happens.
I added the AWNTrootV4 files to the card and ejected.
Put the card in the nook running 1.4.1 and held power and n button and voila it booted CWM all the files were present and i installed both zips.
Strangely after the install in ES file explorer I had no access to the SD,
I popped the card out and in, and got a message saying my card needed to be formatted again by the nook, so i did it.
After this accessed the files with file explorer and noticed that just the BN file and lostdir file were present
so leaving the tablet on i popped out the card and recopied them over leaving the 1stindirect.zip and albertw.zip files off.
I popped the card back in and it read the sd card and all the apps installed fine.
Also i flashed cwm to the tab with nook tab recovery.
AS of right now I believe i have a successful root on my hands from 1.4.1 without a pc-usb boot.
One more question. OTA update blocker should be installed at this point correct, so that I can avoid auto updates?
Thanks a million, as soon as my girl gets home with the bank card I'll be donating for your help
I've managed to get totally lost.
I just want to get CWM on an SD card & do an img backup. Not looking to flash anymore than CWM at the moment.
There is so much going on in Indirect's thread my brain is locked up.
Could someone please get me pointed & unfrozen? Nook is OK, just my brain is frozen.
My post sorts all that crap out in one easy download and even a video to install from. I am lost on where you are lost
I'll search for your post & video.

I must have missed it..
I missed one item on your video - that being where, and at what step did you install the *.apk which shows the nook tablet hidden settings. Since the NT is not rooted I don't have those files on the NT from your Albert App update.zip.
Thanks,

Well I got CWM onto my SD card and successfully booted. Now to sort out how to create a Nook Tablet image backup & where to put it.
Maybe tomorrow.
Please help a noob out here. I know the answers are out there, but I am not sure which method is best to use. I am familiar with rooting on my android cellphone, but I am not so sure about the methods used to root the nook tablet. They seem a bit more complicated and I want to make sure I have the correct info well explained.
I would like to know the following:
Where can I find the thread concerning installation of CWM/Rooting and how to back up my tablet before I I do anything else? (I have learned this the hard way, once. Never again will I proceed before backing up so I can restore it when I screw it up)
What is the most stable ROM that has been developed for the tablet so far?
Where can I find the instructions on how to install this ROM so that even an idiot (aka, me) can install this?
Maybe I am just skittish, but I hope you understand.
Thanks in advance!!!
Are you looking to root and run your ROM from SD card? Or would you rather install things to internal?
Thanks for replying. If I rooted and ran ROM from SD card, would that leave the Nook with the ability to run as originally designed if I opted to do that? (by basically removing the SD card and letting the Nook boot normally?) I have never used that option on any of my rooted phones. If so, that is probably the way to go. What do you recommend? I know it is a risk either way, but it sounds like running the ROM from the SD card seems safer.

This thread might be a good place to get you started. Or at least start thinking about how you want to get set up.

Using this method by albertwertz allows you to put regular root, CWM, and CM7 (most stable CyanogenMod ROM so far) all on an SD card. He even includes step-by-step videos and does a good job explaining. His YouTube channel contains more videos of various ways to root, too.
If you want everything on your SD card and not have to worry about messing with internal, a method like this is probably your best bet.
Thanks. I tried following Alberts method step by step twice now, and everything seems to go right as far as making the SD card, but when I insert it into my 16GB Nook Tablet, running 1.4.2, and partitioned at BN, it will not reboot. The only way it will reboot is if I take the SD card that I made to root the tablet. It will reboot into normal operation mode. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I am really getting frustrated.

Try turning your nook off, insert sd card, then plug it in to charger or usb cord. Some model nooks have to plugged in to boot from sd card.
I finally got it to work. Everything went well. CM7 installed, looked great. When I installed Google Apps. It comes up to the registration screen, but when it tells me to touch the android, the tablet does not register my touch and I can't move past the screen
Finally got everything working. I don't know why I got all worried. Had to reinstall a couple of times and fix permissions. Just like always. I must say I really like CM7 compared to the Nook interface. Nice job Devs! Thanks for everyone's help pointing me in the right direction.

Deleted: decided to read a little more, formulate a question and start a new thread.
Hi guys,
So I was just browsing ebay and came across a brand new 16 gb nook tablet and was able to grab it for under 200, so I caved in and bought it.
This is my first tablet and I've done some minor homework to figure out what I want to get out of it.
Basically, I've deduced I'm definitely going to root it, the question being whether to go with the CM7 or CM9. Since I'm just going to be using it for general use, I think I'll go with CM7 since from what I've read that is the most stable system right now. I think I can find the resources on here to do that.
The next thing is, I am not interested in buying an SD card, so I was looking around for ways to unlock the full 16gb of memory and saw this thread about repartioning:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531120&highlight=use+16gb
So basically, I just want to confirm if my approach is correct. Since I want to root it for optimal use and get the full 16gb, the correct things to do are
1. Root with CM7 procedure
2. Follow that thread to repartition
Is that correct? Just want to make sure I have the proper procedure down
Thanks
Well if you're just using it for general use and you're not planning on running intensive games or watching HD YouTube vids, I'd go with cm9. Just for one reason, the layout in apps. Not so much market apps except for a select few they are really well designed but the Google apps: They're so much better laid out for a tablet, cm7 feels to me like you're using a big gingerbread phone and I hate it. Just compare the Gmail apps, just do it. If no hw accel doesn't bother you and you don't mind a little less battery life (its a minimal difference, using wake lock to stop SODs) then definately go with cm9! As for rooting I'd watch Alberctwertz's YouTube channel, great tutorials over there. I don't know about repartitioning, I haven't messed with mine and I have all 12 (well 11 really) gb of internal open to me. Just IMO.
Hope it helps

Thanks for the quick response. So if I understand correctly, simply rooting to CM9 will open up 11gb of space no problem?
Also, if I do this, will it be easy to upgrade once an improved version of CM9 comes out?

It looks good, except in between 1 and 2 you need to have flashed clockworkmod onto the internal storage. Indirect's clockworkmod flasher apk is somewhere in the forums.
And no, it won't free up 11 gigs. The problem is that the /data partition has a huge chunk of storage. That's where all your apps are stored. I mean you could always store things in /data if you really wanted.
Yes, upgrade will be easy. With clockworkmod it's simple, you just select to "apply update from zip", and wipe cache and you're good to go.
Just went ahead and ordered a 16 gb micro sd on amazon for 10 bucks to give myself the extra storage + easy rooting, so that should pretty much cover all the problems.
However I'm still confused about this 11 gb that is "locked" or whatever. After a root, is that data accessible for storage? I'm not really sure what people are talking about in reference to that

If I remember right, its available but not in the "My Nook" partition that mounts on your PC (this will show as .99gb). So you won't be able to transfer stuff directly from your computer to the nook internal. By re-partitioning, you make it so the mounted internal drive is all of the available internal storage.
As of right now, CM9 does not mount internal at all though. CM7 does as well as the stock B&N OS.
you can use CM9 or CM7 or you can just root it. but i recommend either root it or try CM7, CM9 seems like there are many issues.
it has 16 GB, but only 13 GB is available to use, and in that 13 GB: 12 GB is used for B&N content, you have only 1 GB to use.
if you follow that thread, you still don't have 16 GB (because only 13 GB is available to use)
and instead of doing it yourself, why don't you let B&N do it?
btw, you should use sd card, it's not that expensive and you'll need it to root or install CM7,... most programs store data in sd card, you can also use a sd card to backup,....
Before you do anything, i recommend that you boot into CWM from an sd card and make a full backup of the stock tablet. Also go into settings and record all the unique numbers like the serial and the MAC address in case you brick it at some point and have to fully scrub it to unbrick it.

First, take a look at this thread for creating a Root/ROM/Recovery SD card by Albert Wertz:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528625
Follow those steps, and you can install any ROM you want on your Nook, painlessly. I second the recommendation that you back up your unrooted Nook before you do anything else.
Saludos,
Steve
Thanks for all the input guys! Will definitely keep you posted once it gets here and I get to work.
I'm still a little confused about the 13 gb that is locked... so even after a root, that is still only available for B&N content...? That's what has me lost, I don't get how rooting wouldn't unlock that to be used for any type of content
yes, why is the 13 gb still un-usable ?
hmmm, if you boot up an 'os' ( cwm 7.2 or 9 ) on the external sd card, and then the internal structure has to stay the way it is... the internal 'has to be' un-modified in order for it to boot up into stock nook 'os'.
but when the dev gurus get all done with the replacement of the internal 'os' ( next month ? ) then we will be 'in charge' and get to use the memory the way we want.
still confused

In order to get the rest, you must repartition your NT so all of the space is usable.
Barnes and Noble's method will take you back to completely stock. You will have to reroot and reflash everything again. That's why it's recommended that you do it manually following the steps in the link I provided.
i just got my nt certified preowned from b&n. df -h shows 5.3G /data and 7.5g /mnt/media. has my system already been repartitioned??

Oh, then yes. It looks like your NT was already partitioned by Barnes and Noble. They changed your media partition from 1GB to 8GB (7.5GB usable).
ahhhhhh.... thanks so much, i thought i was losing my mind. what i was seeing didnt match up with the above discussion. thanks again
No problem. Glad to hear you aren't losing your mind!
So if I'd like to get mine repartitioned by B&N before rooting I can do that? Do I just go to their b&m store and request to see a technician?
so i want to take my nook tablet to B&N to ask for more space but i want to be sure there is no signs of root.
I used this method a few months ago, should i be good?

You should be fine, as long as you can do a factory reset. I had CM7 on my Nook, restored it to the original software via CWM, and didn't have any problems at B&N.
Actually, they do the update with a bootable micro-SD, so it might not even matter at all what OS version you're running at all in the first place...
As I understand it, the repartition card completely overwrites your drive, erasing root and whatnot, and also updating you to 1.4.2

I had B&N reformat the HD to give me the 8GB so unrooted using the Nook Unrooter and did a factory reset. Took the tablet in and five (maybe 10) had 8 more GB...took it home and rerooted....good as new!

Yes, you can do that.
Although it was my understanding that Barnes & Noble's repartition SD card reset all partitions to factory anyway so it wouldn't matter what you had installed to your device at all. Can someone confirm this?

can I do a nandroid backup, use the acclaim update (to remove root and cwm) and then let it update and take it in to barnes and noble for repartioning?

I don't know if the acclaim_update will remove CWM installed internally (if that is what you have); I did not have it installed back then. Maybe this would be a useless step, but I would use Indirect's recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650927 (props) to flash stock recovery, run acclaim (or 8 failed boots), update to 1.4.2, then bring it in to B&N for repartitioning.
I took mine in today and it was still rooted. She looked at the settings, asked me if it was rooted and I said yes. She booted from her SD card and it reverted me to unrooted 4.1.2. I did not have CWM internal so I can't say whether it would have survived. When I got home I just restored the backup I made before I took it in and I am now exactly as I was prior, except, I have 8 gb of internal storage.
Doesn't really matter as I mostly run CM7 from SD and play with CM9 on the internal.

This, to me, is likely a 'mileage may vary' sort of instance. I doubt all B&N employees would be this kind. As such, I would recommend to anyone trying to have B&N repartition to either have a backup B&N to go to after the first one rejects you or make a backup and restore to stock yourself prior to bringing it in.
My point is that it is not the end of the world if you can't get rid of root. You could always say "can you please get this back to stock for me, I bought it from a friend".
It is also no big deal to restore a previous CWM backup and you are right back in business.

I'm on an 8 gb 1.4.2 nook that has never been rooted before.
I'm attempting to follow the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488035
However both when using the files from that thread, and the previous thread by inderect, my nook refused to boot up once i put in the SD card, until it gave me the factory reset option, and then booted to the stock OS anyway.
I've tried having it plugged into the wall/computer before and after turning off the nook, as well as without it plugged in, and its made no difference
Does anyone have any ideas?

Consider yourself lucky that you can't boot from the sdcard. I believe the thread you are trying to use was prior to the 8gig tablet. If so you would probably create a frustrating period until you could once again use your nt.
Try this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644862. The lady who posted it is very knowledgeable and helpful. I don't have an 8gig and have not investigated the possibilities as this lady has.
Good Luck!
