Kies connecting problem. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since Kies got updated (a week ago), i cannot connect my Galaxy S2, and therefore cannot update my firmware through it. Every time i connect my S2 it just says Connecting... and stays like that. The funny thing though is, if i have a lock on my phone, it will detect the phone and tell me to unlock it. After I unlock it, it does the same thing again.. Connecting...
Any help?

No personal experience but try to reinstall Kies
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

Tried, but it didnt work. Tried installing it on other PC, also doesn't work. Kies detects Galaxy S and S Plus, but cannot detect S2. Before the update though, it didnt have any trouble. I even tried with the older version, but that wont work too...

Do a factory reset, restart your Pc and launch Kies first then connect your mobile to ur pc .

This doesn't work either... Any other suggestions?

And yes USB debugging is turned off. I tried turning it on and off but it DOESNT make the phone connect to Kies.

Hmm. Ok, try entering *#7284# into the dialer. This will bring up a service menu. USB should have PDA selected. If it doesn't, select PDA. If it does, change it to Modem, then back to PDA. After that, try your USB connection again.

Does the port work at all? Will the phone charge?
If so, can you plug the phone into your computer via USB and start an ADB shell?

Yes yes the port is fully operational and i managed to connect the phone to Kies finally with just removing the SD card. Still not sure why it wouldnt connect with it...

Common Kies problem answers .
One use the SGS2 USB cable
Two connect only to a mainboard USB port .

[Q] Help needed with USB Mass Storage problem

Morning all.
As of yesterday, my S2 won't connect to any pc in mass storage mode.
At first it connected as it should, but after about 5 minutes - before I'd transferred anything - I got a message that windows couldn't recognise the device/driver installation unsuccessful.
Since then I get this message immediately, have tried 4 different pcs.
Would seem the USB drivers are FUBAR somehow, but MTP via Kies works, as does Odin.
I've tried a full factory reset/reinstall, previous backups - stock and custom - removed, reinstalled and updated Kies, cleaned the USB port on the phone - nothing doing. Have tried stock kernels, Siyah, Nimphetamine - nothing. Currently on XWKL1, custom ROM (krinyo's SlimROM) with Siyah 2.6.3+
Also tried uninstalling various USB ports on my home pc, but stopped when I discovered it was the same on all pcs.
It's not the end of the world - I have bluetooth and my microSD - but it's a PITA and I'm out of ideas.
Many thanks for any help/suggestions.

Yes, forgot to add that, sorry. Tried with and without, no difference.
Tried changing the usb cable?

Dear All
Following are my observations and possible steps to
1. When the phone is upgraded to Android 2.3.4 and above (mine is 2.3.6) Kies stops recognizing the phones and USB connection / Serial port connections etc get reset on the phone
2. Even if proper drivers are there on the laptop (mine is Windows 7 64bit) they are not recognized
3. Device Manager shows "unknown device"
4. Updating the driver also does not result in any help
5. solution lies in the phone
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect (thanks to napi1 @ androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/447145-sgs2-kies-not-syncing-os-2-3-5-a.html#post3484588)
6. The Laptop will start recognizing the required drivers and install them

Maybe this can help
Getting a Service Mode FC when I enter that code in the keypad.
Will try it with an older backup.
Edit - tried it with a backup of CheckROM , 2.3.6. No FC, PDA already selected. Tried 5c above, still no good - unknown device on pc..

No. Can't see that there's a problem there if Kies and Odin connect OK.

Bugger me, it was the cable....
Bought a new S2 yesterday - nice to have a backup, and the Nexus is meh - and tried the new cable on old S2, everything fine. Old cable on new S2, no good for USB but fine for Kies and Odin as mentioned before.
No idea why it should be like this, but sh*t happens. Easiest solution is often the best!
same problem happened to me too
I have the exact same problem, tried everything like OP, even new cable still same issue...any ideas?

Im running the following
S2 Root 1.5.1
Android Version 2.3.6

Make sure samsung drivers are installed, try different USB ports, check USB debugging in settings.
If it doesnt work again, try it with a different computer if possible.

That needs to be on, so the problem is elsewhere. Did you install samsung drivers, if you did, have you tried different USB ports?
I have downloaded the drivers and still not working
Still cant get it to work

Can't install drivers, Odin won't connect

Hi guys,
I have a problem that's fairly common but I can't get it right
I can't install new drivers for my SGS2, my pc/laptop don't recognize it anymore.
I have flashed an ICS rom before so I also tried the Nexus S drivers, no success.
I have tried to work with Android SDK manager but since my laptop can't find my phone, it won't find it as an adb device.
I managed to get back on 2.3.3 via CWM manager but my USB jig also doesn't work anymore.
I have tried everything regarding Kies and new drivers so I'm pretty much out of hope... Anyone with suggestions?
You could use mobile odin, also if you flash back to ics you can reset counter with triangleaway and then flash back to gb

Problem is that I can't flash back the old bootloader..
I think the logical step would be to try another PC, given you've tried everything else & nothing has worked.
You could also maybe try Heimdall (search for it on here).
Also, if you haven't tried different USB cables (in particular the one that came with the phone), give that a shot. Also make sure you're connecting the phone to a powered/mainboard USB port & not a hub port. Also, try toggling USB debugging in your phone settings.
That's about all I got. Try these things if you haven't already, but definitely try another PC.

I have tried different ports with different cables, different pc also won't install the drivers.
Usb debugging on/off doesn't work either.
Going to try heimdall today but it has something to do with my phone since I flashed so many files before with my pc and with my laptop.
Will post after I tried.
Yeah it sounds like a phone issue given you have been able to flash firmware with that PC previously. Good luck with Heimdall, fingers crossed for you.

Nope, heimdall can't recognize my phone either.
Running out of ideas here.
I guess there isn't an option to flash the old bootloader other than Odin huh?
Unfortunately Mobile Odin can't flash bootloaders yet, so Odin (and probably Heimdall) are your only options. Either way you're going to need USB.

My PC recently stopped working properly it connects but always fails flashing via Odin, I managed to set up Odin etc on GF laptop so at least I can use Odin if needed. Could you not try restoring your PC to earlier date and see if that works or uninstall everything to do with phone, kies, Odin adb etc and do a fresh install of everything

My phone doesn't connect at all.
I have tried uninstalling everything including drivers and such via USBDeview.
The problem lies with the phone itself I think, not my pc.
I think I have found the problem.
I think my USB port from my phone is broken.
I will try to reset my binary counter with Triangleaway, then flash back original firmware without root and then send it for repair to the Vodafone shop!
Hope this works

I have the same problem. I came from CM9 and now I cannot connect my phone to the PC. I am using CheckRom V6.
Do you think it has to do with the bootloader? Or might the usb port be broken as well?

Yeah I think that it has to do with the bootloader, but a broken usb port is also a common problem.
I still have warranty so I will just let Vodafone repair it.
If my pc still doesn't recognize it after that, then I'm screwed.

I have:
Reinstalled kies
Checked all settings on the phone
Tried diffrent cables
Tried connect without kies installed
Tried with kies installed but not turned on
Rebooted phone and computer
Tried to connect in all usb "holes"
Tried using diffrent usb adapters
AND SO ON...
I've tried all things i could find..
But when i look in device manager i cant find drivers for my GT-I9100 with ICS 4.03
I'm doing everything i can come up with, and still it wont istall any drivers for my phone?
So how do i get the drivers?, if thats the problem....
EDIT: Tried with 2 diffrent computers with diffrent os, still dosent work...

1. is your phone rooted? if yes, i believe kies cannot detect rooted phone
2. definitely not the problem of XP, i have no problem with my XP, one possibility could be your XP something corrupted, suggest you try on other pc.
Kies can detects rooted phones so that is not an issue.
You could put your phone in Download mode, and connect it to your pc and then run odin. If Odin detects it then it is not your drivers. If Odin cannot find a phone then obviously there is an issue with the drivers.(btw you dont have to do anything in odin for it to find it)

But as said the problem is that i dont have drivers at all on my computer for my phone, still i have latest update of kies..
Then do waht MistahBungle says. If your drivers arent installed kies is doing something wrong. Uninstall kies, delete the entire remaining Kies folder from program files, Clean up your registry and reboot your pc.
Once you have done that, Redownload Kies from the samsung website, make sure its the windows 32 bit(x86) version(as im guessing you are running that as XP) and install it.
Once it is installed. Reboot your computer. Turn your phone on and make sure USB debugging is completely turned off and then plug the phone in to your pc.
MistahBungle said:
Given you say you've tried *everything*, if it were me, I'd try a different PC. If it still doesn't work, user error; probably something really simply we're missing/you're not doing. Impossible to say what it is as we're not there with you looking over your shoulder.
Actually, I saw a thread on here last week, someone had tried everything like you & they fixed it by uninstalling Kies, removing Kies registry entries, rebooting, downloading/installing a fresh copy of Kies (for the drivers), running Windoze Update, rebooting. Fixed. Maybe try this before another PC.
You also must check Windoze Task Manager & kill Kies/any associated processes. You only want the drivers, not Kies/it's processes running when you use Odin.

Hi,
It happened with me too, and there is nothing wrong with the device, its fine.
My friend told me this,
update your Kies software to the latest version, then close the Kies. i mean the kies application should not be running.
Then connect the device and wait for sometime, till the message appears -- MTP connected.
Then open the Kies application, and let the Kies to identify the device.
If it says some error, like device not recognized, then there is an option to debug the connectivity.
Try that option too.
It'll connect surely, but you should be patient.
I think, its the problem with Kies software. I use it only to update the Android firmware. But now, I'm on Custom ROM, so this Kies is no more required for me.

Hereticnine.

Correct. Even without Samsung USB drivers installed your PC (I guess running Windows) should show a reaction. At least the PC should report an unknown device.
Maybe you should try installing the drivers manually? Not sure if it's gonna help but might as well try, right?
If that doesn't work either maybe you should try contacting the one you got the phone from. Maybe there's something wrong with the particular device.

OK, one last option. Can a Faulty ROM instillation cause the device not to connect to my PC?
Other than that I guess I should get a replacement for my device.
