So verizon got with htc and added the rezound to there htcdev unlock tool. which is def a win for us but from what a friend who used this with his evo3d on sprint just informed me. is that as soon as you use this tool your device esn is red flag by htc then sent to carrier and all insurance coverage is permanently voided. so if you used this tool and have insurance you might as well cancel it.
so now that this tool has hit for our devices. would it be safe to assume that some dev or devs will be working on a method that unlocks the device without flagging your esn or making the bootloader say relocked if you choose to go back to locked and will this make it easier to achieve S-off .
this is just some info i got from one person who has sprint and did this please correct if this is wrong.
Hopefully not.
Insurance can't be entirely voided. Besides, that is hearsay. Until you can show me that in writing, I don't believe it. I'm sure it voids mechanical problems or software issues but if my phone gets lost... I'm covered. Until you can prove it, everyone needs to just calm down and don't let speculation get out of control.
Sent from my newly unlocked Rezound.. Thank you HTC.
Htc/dev has already said when you use the unlocker you void your warranty and any support from htc. And when you use the unlocker You know that info goes to VZW .
Peter Chou said if you use the unlocker you lose your warranty.

You warranty is voided upon unlocking the bootloader. I really doubt they can just nullify the insurance in which you pay for a replacement.
you can think whatever you want im just relaying info from my friend who only found this out because he dropped his 3d and cracked the screen when he went to get it fixed thats what they told him after they said they couldnt fix it idk how it is on verizon i suppose u could ask them but ill bet its the same

he had to replace his 3d with best buys black tie also i found all this out because i called him to ask him how hard it was to do on his 3d and he told me not to do it
This is exactly why I've waited to unlock my device. Not like there's even anything to flash yet.

So just say you lost it. Problem solved.
Your friend was lied to by sprint, or he didn't really have insurance. I am on the 3d and have spoken with numerous sprint employees and know a couple people who unlocked with htc and used the insurance to fix their phone from dropping it and what not. It does void the warranty, but not the insurance. But s-off voids your warranty, always has, this isn't different. HTC states it just like it's been stated by devs over the years, you do this at your own risk.

I don't think there is any douchebaggery here. We void warranties. That's what we do. Buy insurance from an outside source that is willing to accept software modification. Dunno if squaretrade does, but probably.

Exactly. this needs to be locked/deleted ASAP before people start freaking out over nothing!
Just stop for a second and think about it, you can get your unlock key without actually unlocking your phone right? Right. So from that point you do whatever it is that you do with the key, throw it in a zip file, put it on a storage drive, delete it, whatever really...the only way Verizon or HTC could know that you actually did use the unlock key would be if you foolishly sent it back in a "unlocked" or "relocked" state. Besides would you really think a company would waste the resources or manpower to pass along a "red flag" to your carrier who would then in turn, go through every account associated and adjust coverage or call customers and ask if they used the key, get real. Furthermore "insurance" like Asurion covers for lost/stolen/damage, and has absolutely nothing to do with warranty. The only thing that happens when you use that tool is that you get a unlock .bin file, if you flash it then yes your hardware warranty is technically void(IF someone could prove it), that's it...period.

It doesn't even void your warranty. It just voids parts of it that could be caused by you being a dumb-ass.
If something breaks non related to something you could have done with an unlocked boot-loader, it cant be taken away. Even more so, Verizon can NOT cancel something and still keep taking money for it with zero notification. It's very, very illegal.

I don't know a lot about cell phone companies and warranties. If it is anything like car manufacturer warranties, and I have a feeling it is, then by law the company has to prove the "mod"(sorry car slang) caused the failure to deny warranty service. And this is by law.

I am considering buying a handset from a seller on ebay that is network blocked in Australia (my country).
Can this be undone by flashing a new ROM? Or is the block done on the hardware or at the nerwork level?
And what are you going to do with it pal.I'm not going to get abusive....,but surely your not that stupid.
Crachel/Mistahbungle its over to you..
Sent from my GT-I9100
You will need unlock code. Network lock is stored in EFS.
What's he saying that the seller got the phone network blocked (maybe didn't pay the bills or its stolen). The device is identified by the IMEI and that does not change regardless of what ROM you have on the device.
Changing of the IMEI is illegal.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
block is done on a network level by the provider.
I suggest you get the IMEI from the seller and phone your provider and find out the reason for the block.
If it is a simple thing, like non payment ofd bills, once you show that it is going on a new account, it maybe possible to unblock it.
If they consider the handset stolen, you will not be able to d anything.
Did you steal it? If you change the imei you will go to prison for a long time and the Americans will probably deport you to Guantanamo and soldiers will pee on you and stuff.
The reason I asked was because it was going cheap on eBay and I thought if I could unblock it it would be a cheap way to buy a phone.
And wow, some of the people who replied here make retarded look smart.

Do you mean its its network locked, ie to one network or do you mean its blocked from all networks?
If its network locked you can download an app from market to unlock it, its easy and takes few minutes, called galaxy_unlock or somthing, worked for me.
If its blocked to all networks then you cant unblock it (easily) for use in same country as you would need to change it IMEI which is very illegal in most countries. However if you're importing it then it wont really matter as the networks wont be blocking it in another country. You should be able to just stick a sim card in and off you go.
So do some of the retards who consider buying phones that are IMEI blocked
Check. Your move.

Not everyone is born with all of the knowledge that they are going to die with. Sometimes esoteric knowledge, such as the various details considering network blocking of communications devices, can be exchanged on internet forums where those who are well versed in those details can provide assistance to those who are not as familiar with them. Unfortunately, not everyone on the internet is polite to those who ask questions, or acknowledges that they may be experts in fields other than the one they are asking about. Lol,this q + a section isnt a patch on the development section.See what happens when you ask stupid questions in there,or dont search the thread for questions that have been asked dozens of times before.
The only thing that I can imagine is that because eBay allows them to be listed, then it must be legal somehow then you think theres no harm done and you can "sort" the phone>you get cheap working phone.
If you were considering buying a used phone or water damaged one, then you wouldnt have got such a rough ride.
If blacklisted phones were simple to modify then it would lead to more phones getting stolen.

My neighbor told me he saw this on the news. I checked on Taptu and sure enough there is an article on CNet saying that this Saturday it will become illegal to unlock any device without the carriers approval. I cant post the link cause i have fewer than 10 posts. Bummer.
Does anyone know anything more about this? How can they make an open source project like Android illegal. I understand the "Buy an unlocked device." idea, but but where I live there's simply no carrier that supports the use of an "unlocked" device.
I was just wondering what u devs thought about this. Will this effect any pure Google devices such as my GNex? What about my HTC phone which HTC provides the means of unlocking? Is that having the carrier's approval?

If the device is a Google branded device - coming straight from Google, not from any carriers like att or Verizon, then it shouldn't affect the device. So if you have a Verizon Gnex, yes. UNLESS Verizon decides to support it. This is why I always get my phone from Google itself as a device with no limitations except the hardware inside.

So will there be a "grandfather" clause that will allow me to keep my GNex unlocked or will they be able to somehow re-lock my LTE GNex?
As i stated, the only svc available where I live, aka. the sticks, is LTE. I am not aware of any unlocked device worth owning that uses the lte network. Suggestions??
And what about my HTC Rezound with unlocked bootloader? I mean, verizon had to allow HTC to sell its phone with the unlockable bootloader?? I would think that they allowed the GNex as well? I mean its only a select few devices that have this built in.

Is illegal in Bulgaria ago. And refuse warranty service if are changed ROM or device is ROOTed.
The only reason I like my android is because I can change the roms and root the phone. Allows so much customization and additional support when the manufacturer rather you go buy another phone every year.

Not sure what you are saying. Are you saying rooting will not be illegal but that loading a new ROM on a phone that makes the phone no longer carrier locked will be?
Most of these forums revolve around putting new, improved, unlocked ROMs on our phones. If that's going to be illegal on the 26th, then we've got problems because all these forums will be about illegal activities!
Have I missed something?

Sign the Petition
it is important to do something against that so sign this petition https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7 !!
not sure in your country
depends on your countrys laws and if you purchased the phone straight from google them selves
There are many petitions floating around, yet, I don't believe this will be around for very long. If you PURCHASE your phone it's fine. The problem lies in people upgrading, unlocking, then selling their phones. So second party (the people that buy the unlocked phones) may be held liable as the IMEI might not be registered at 'sale' or 'upgrade' even though those numbers are plainly posted on the sales package. It still pisses me off though. I upgrade and don't really use the phones I get directly, (I don't sell the phone until my service agreement eligible for another upgrade) and to think someone I sell a phone to may be held criminally liable pisses me off. Even the same when I buy a phone considering ignorance is not an excuse. How many noobs are here begging for information? Say some kid buys an unlocked ICrap to use on T-Mobile? Pops in the SIM Card and gets reported. Who wins?

Speeding in a school zone is illegal too but we all catch ourselves doing.
I suggest if you unlock your at&t phone you don't go calling them saying your going to T-Mobile. You wouldn't speed in front of that cop.
BTW this doesn't seem like a big deal. Hopefully it ends subsidized phones with two year plans so people can not have to wait 2 years to switch. If you paid 800 for it then you can unlock it, or what some people said where you make a backup of your stock and then do whatever.

I don't understand what is the problem of lawmakers, but one of them are simply f**ed up.
1. If i bought a phone from a carrier and i'm still paying the monthly fee, until my contract ends, what is the problem of the carrier if i unlock the device?!
2. If i unlock the device, root it or change the rom, i must be aware i will void my warranty.
Dear XDA fellows,
i requested a provider unlock code for my simlocked samsung s2
Unfortunately the code does not work at all.
Now i wonder why,
i have rooted the phone with the old ICS and used the galaxy s unlock app on it to use other providers cards.
A few months later (now) i updated Android to 4.12 and tried to use the provider unlock code on it but it did not work.
Rooted the phone again and tried various unlock apps, but none of them work.
Now i wonder why the phone has become so defiant to my attempts to unlock it, after all i treated it good for all the time that i used it.
Maybe someone has any suggestions on how to unlock the phone after all?
IMEI blocked
Hello Everyone,
I don't know if this is the right place to post my issue. Briefly.... After having a Samsung Galaxy s II, GT-I9100, with a contract in Italy (VODAFONE), having paid the phone in full, suddenly after two years, I decide to close contract,
The Vodafone bastards tell me that I must pay 380.00 € (threehundredeigthy) because of some invoices. This obviously according to them. I always paid everything. I refuse to pay this sum and open a controversy with them demonstrating with facts and papers at hand that it is not right I pay this amount. Anyway, after a week, they block my IMEI.
I think this is absurd. I PAID THE PHONE IN FULL!!! They want 380.00 € of telephone calls related to the SIM card. I don't want to pay this money. The phone is no brand.
I went to a lawyer, and he told me it's not worth the hassle to go to court for such sum.
What I want to know is:
Why should I have a phone that doesn't work after I have paid for it?
You need to contact a guy called "gaston" on here.
He works for vodafone italy in the customer service dept.

If they IMEI block the phone, you're boned. Nothing anyone here can do to help. If they block it, the phone is blocked at the carriers end & in many countries on all networks in that country.
And further talk about changing the IMEI will likely see the thread closed, given this is illegal in most countries & talk of same is against XDA rules. Go see a local mobile repair shop, some might be able to 'help'.

I think this site other than an educational point of view, can also offer expertise and technical assistence as it is a really important internet forum. I really don't understand your rude answer..honestly it has no sense or help to me.
Why should he care.....hes not getting paid. You are involved in a civil dispute with vodafone or whoever,so this isnt the carriers complaints dept.
Then you start talking about an illegal method to help you out which is against xda rules.
So dont pay then, sell the phone and use the money towards buying another phone.Make sure it isnt a vodafone one......lol

Go on Ebay and look for faulty phones. Basically ones with broken screens. Stay away from water damaged ones and ones with the same problem you are having. Once you get it, you could swap out the motherboards and sell yours on Ebay. Sell yours outside of the country as it might work. This would be the easy way. It might cost you about 50 bucks but you could sell your motherboard and make it back.
Remember Google is your friend for changing IMEI. I would choose the option above.

I'm really sorry if I caused any sort of trouble to any member of the forum. Honestly it was the last of my intents. I will obviously put a stop to my curiosity, thoughts & problems regarding the IMEI related issue to avoid any sort of problems. Sorry once again.
Regardless of the circumstances changing the IMEI, discussing how to change the IMEI, and I believe in the UK even possessing tools capable of doing so, is all illegal and can get the site in trouble. This is an issue you would need to take up with your local representative or vodaphone and should not be discussed in anyway here.
This is non-negotiable.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

I recently had my 4 month old LG 5 overheat and quit working. I returned it to the Cell phone provider (FreedomvMobile) who sent it to Futuretel in Ontario as the authorized repair centre in Canada.
They have informed me that I have rooted the phone and therefore it is not covered under warranty. I did not know what rooting was until I googled it. I have not rooted the phone. They are refusing to fix the phone. They say that the test of the phone is conclusive and that it was rooted. It was not. Does anyone have any idea if there are other causes that would make the technician at Futuretel think that it was rooted? I need some information before I go even further with this ridiculous response from Futuretel. Help!

Well, I and my wife upgraded to Galaxy S9s this spring due to a seriously unbeatable deal. Had the G5 supported the AWS bands used by the new carrier we switched to, she would still have been using it but alas, nope.
We still have her LG G5 and my son uses it as an ipod of sorts. I would love to root the thing just so newer OS' can be installed on it as it will never be a phone again so I don't need to worry about things like tap to pay and such. I guess it getting to Android 8 will have to do.
Yeah, I would love to root if possible too but I understand that our device is not popular enough just as H850 is or H830.

Ya, see, there is one general complaint that fits this... I hate that there are so many damned models of each of the main model names... As in there is never really JUST an LG G5 or JUST a Galaxy S9.
If you look HARD enough there is a way to ROOT a H831. You have to use Marshmallow 6.0 and follow a small tutorial that you will find if you look HARD. I am not sure if you can roll back to v6.0 so you can force root but hey all you have to do is LOOK!
